A philosophical guide to facing life's inevitable hardships. There is no cure for the human condition: life is hard. But Kieran Setiya believes philosophy can help. He offers us a map for navigating rough terrain, from personal trauma to the injustice and absurdity of the world. In this profound and personal book, Setiya shows how the tools of philosophy can help us find our way. Drawing on ancient and modern philosophy as well as fiction, history, memoir, film, comedy, social science, and stories from Setiya's own experience, Life Is Hard is a book for this moment—a work of solace and compassion.Warm, accessible, and good-humored, this book is about making the best of a bad lot. It offers guidance for coping with pain and making new friends, for grieving the lost and failing with grace, for confronting injustice and searching for meaning in life. Countering pop psychologists and online influencers who admonish us to “find our bliss” and “live our best lives,” Setiya acknowledges that the best is often out of reach. Instead, he asks how we can weather life's adversities, finding hope and living well when life is hard.Get the book here:https://wellingtonsquarebooks.indiecommerce.com/book/9780593538210

Equity Strategy: Is Europe really only offering downside vs global? Countering the widespread bearishness on the region

All into Account

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 20, 2022 3:01

Speaker: Mislav Matejka, Head of Global Equity Strategy. Over past weeks, we have fielded numerous calls by global/US investors, who are bearish on Europe, with one of the key questions being: why is Europe not lagging much more relative to the US? Reports of much more significant size of short positions in Europe than in other regions are frequent in the media, as well as of the biggest UW on the region ever, vs global benchmark. In light of all of this, it is interesting to note that in local FX SXXP ytd is down 16%, vs SPX down 18%. So, is Europe a clear short? Our base case is for a Eurozone recession, but we do not think that Europe offers only downside, as: 1) Our view remains that natural gas prices will move lower, given the good progress on refilling of storages, new LNG coming in, as well as already reduced consumption, and therefore that forced shutdowns are unlikely. 2) Eurozone is historically high beta on the way down, partly as Banks and periphery would act as a weak link. This time around, Eurozone Banks are well capitalized, and peripheral spreads are not expected to have a disorderly widening, courtesy of the ECB backstop. 3) Earnings could be acting better than typically, and a potential recession might be shallow, given resilient house prices and an EU labour market that has never been this strong. 4) Fiscal impulse is expected to be bigger in Europe than elsewhere. 5) ECB is expected to be less aggressive than the Fed. 6) P/E discount of Eurozone to the US has never been as large as it is currently, with very light positioning. From the broad market perspective, last week's CPI print was disappointing, but we don't think the call of inflation peaking, and consequently of the Fed likely becoming more balanced post the September hike, is off. PPIs are down, and compared to what is currently priced in futures, the Fed is unlikely to get more hawkish.   This podcast was recorded on 20 September 2022. Dr. Nathan Connolly and Dr. Shani Mott teach at Johns Hopkins University. Nathan Connolly is an Associate Professor of History who studies, among other things, redlining and race. He's the Director of the Program in Racism, Immigration, and Citizenship at Hopkins, and the author of book called A World More Concrete: Real Estate and the Remaking of Jim Crow South Florida.  Shani Mott is a lecturer in the Africana Studies Department. She studies the use of racial language in fiction and non-fiction in American popular culture. They live with their three children in Homeland, an affluent neighborhood in northeast Baltimore. They are African American. And what happened when they attempted to re-finance the mortgage on their home is the subject of a lawsuit that alleges discrimination in the appraisal process.  They join Tom in Studio A. We had a little technical difficulty with our latest episode so we took the opportunity to address some comments we heard recently that are part of a larger narrative. There can be a lot of fear mongering in parenting, and in particular when it comes to children's learning and development. Today we listen to some comments made during a couple local City Council meetings and talk you through why we find them harmful and scary for parents and why they aren't necessarily what they seem. Also, my birds make several appearances screming in the background. It was too hot to put them outside while we recorded like we normally do. Russia's war in Ukraine highlighted the transnational impact of kleptocracy in financing and empowering autocratic regimes. Russian oligarchs living abroad were sanctioned and stepped down from the boards of influential Western institutions, and other measures were taken to choke off this transnational, supercharged form of corruption. In this episode of the Power 3.0 podcast, featured guest Jason Sharman discusses democracies' remarkably unified early response, and asks what comes next: how kleptocrats might continue to evade sanctions and otherwise adapt, and the challenges of moving from “freezing” to “seizing” assets as an effective counter-kleptocracy measure. Join America's Roundtable Radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy in a recent conversation with Arizona's State Treasurer Kimberly Yee focusing on her leadership role in countering the dangerous anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Sanctions, and Divestment) movement. The conversation highlights the rise of anti-Semitism and how principled leaders across America are calling for principled actions against the BDS movement—a hateful campaign designed to delegitimize Israel and Jewish communities in America and around the world. Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee put investment firm Morningstar on notice and stated that it violated the state's anti-BDS law. The Jewish Insider | Morningstar ESG rating system violates Arizona anti-BDS law, treasurer says (https://jewishinsider.com/2022/08/arizona-kimberly-lee-morningstar-esg-sustainalytics/) “As Treasurer, it is my duty to ensure that Arizona does not do business with companies that are attempting to undermine Israel's economy and violate Arizona's anti-BDS law,” said Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee. “Morningstar's ESG rating subsidiary, Sustainalytics, appears to violate Arizona law by negatively impacting ratings of companies doing business in Israel. I continue to strongly oppose the use of woke ESG ratings in order to keep politics out of Arizonan's livelihoods and retirement accounts.” In Treasurer Yee's letter to Kunal Kapoor, CEO of Morningstar Inc., she informed Kapoor that the company had 30 days within receipt of her letter sent on August 18, 2022, to provide written certification explaining how Morningstar's usage of ESG ratings does not violate Arizona's anti-BDS law. Further, Treasurer Yee required that Morningstar must provide a written averment that they will not engage in any future boycott activities against Israel. “As Arizona's Chief Banking and Investment Officer, I stand with Israel, and I will not allow taxpayer dollars to become victim to the woke political gamesmanship of ESG ratings. ESG ratings are a political scorecard, not a financial scorecard,” said Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee. “I will not allow companies to promote policies that are antisemitic and discriminatory efforts against Israel, which is America's longtime friend and ally, and a significant trade partner with Arizona.” Treasurer Kimberly and Arizona's state government have stood in support of Israel's sovereignty and thwarted efforts of American companies working to boycott Israel. Last year in September 2021, Treasurer Yee withdrew $143 million of Arizona's public funds from Unilever, the parent company of Ben and Jerry's over the ice cream firm's decision to cease sales in Judea and Samaria also known as the West Bank, and east Jerusalem. A published report stated (https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/arizonas-state-treasurer-divests-funds-ben-jerrys-anti-semitic-boycott-israel) — "Arizona will not do business with companies that are attempting to undermine Israel's economy and blatantly disregarding Arizona's law," said Treasurer Kimberly Yee. She is Arizona's chief banking and investment officer and oversees the cash management of Arizona's $53 billion state budget and payments to agencies, local governments and schools. The Arizona Permanent Land Endowment Trust Fund has also hit historic record highs increasing by $1.9 billion in value under Treasurer Yee's administration as of June 30, 2022. Voluntary deposits into the Local Government Investment Pool have also increased by 75.4 percent under Treasurer Yee's leadership, reaching a balance of $5.54 billion in total assets as of June 30, 2022. Treasurer Yee led the effort to pass a state law requiring students to have financial education in high school before graduation, and was the first State Treasurer to have visited all 15 counties in Arizona during the first year of her administration. Earlier this week Turkey announced that its newest drill ship would set sail August 9th for a drilling operation “in the Mediterranean,” setting the stage for an escalation of tensions should the ship deploy to an area that falls within Greece or Cyprus's EEZs. The announcement comes as Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu also upped the ante with Athens again this week, issuing a barrage of heated rhetoric against Greece. Despite the harsh and provocative rhetoric coming out of Ankara and the threat of tensions in the Mediterranean next month, Greece and Cyprus are working to keep tensions low. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards. First, Dom Giordano welcomes in multiple guests into the 1210WPHT studios to discuss the launch of a new program to counter bullying in the city of Philadelphia. Councilman David Oh, MMA Fighter Sam Oropeza, and 13-year old Maria Klara worked together to launch a program in the city that will teach martial arts and self-defense for free to children throughout the city of Philadelphia. The guests explain the program in-depth to Dom, telling of the incredible positives that come with self-defense training. Giordano asks whether this program could be extended to other at-risk individuals in Philadelphia such as the elderly, and asks why there has been pushback in instituting a similar program for Philadelphia police officers. Then, Megan Brock, organizer with Parents Have The Right To Know, rejoins the Dom Giordano Program to discuss why she's now being sued by the Bucks County School District.

He's also a member of the House Select Committee currently investigating the January 6 attack, now set to hold publicly televised hearings next month. His latest attempt at revamping America's leadership role came during the so called I2U2 summit, which brought together the leaders of Israel, the UAE and India. Also dubbed the west Asian Quad, in reference to another regional alliance Biden forged last year, the four countries are expected to cooperate in defence, trade, and technology. But which country is this new Quad directed at? The alignment comes amid soaring energy prices, and food insecurity all brought on by the conflict in Ukraine. As the world looks to tackle record rates of inflation and a business climate still reeling from the global pandemic, the four countries said they will work to coordinate their trade and security policies. But analysts say the group's main goal will be to counter Iran and China's growing influence in the region.
