As the Japanese police prepare for a raid on the Aum Shinrikyo compound, cult leader Shoko Asahara launches a desperate chemical weapons attack in downtown Tokyo. During the height of Monday morning rush hour, Aum terrorists target five commuter trains with sarin gas, killing 13 people and scarring the psyche of an entire nation. Self-doubt shows up quietly, like a persistent undercurrent, and if we're not careful it will chip away at our confidence while feeling logical. How do we reshape our response to self-doubt? Cindy discusses how a subtle but powerful mindset shift can lead to the kind of career growth we didn't let ourselves believe was possible. Believing in ourselves is choosing to build the version of our career that we really want to experience.    When self-doubt takes hold of us, it appears as a slippery, sneaky voice that whispers we're not ready or not qualified, and left unchecked, that limits our career growth. It convinces us to stay in our lane and keep quiet. There are systemic inequities at play and performance pressure that contributes to this doubt. But we sometimes can't identify that it's happening. So Cindy points out the five most common red flags that self-doubt may be showing up: 1. Waiting to be picked, 2. Discounting praise or deflecting credit, 3. Over-apologizing or hedging our ideas, 4. Passing on opportunities, and 5. Mentally beating ourselves up for not being perfect.Cindy immediately counters these red flags with five effective strategies for combatting self-doubt: 1. Reframe failure as growth, 2. Get out of our head and into motion, 3. Focus on one brave action at a time, 4. Shape our mindset to be more encouraging, and 5. Practice a little positivity. Cynicism often feels safer because it protects us from disappointment, but Cindy urges us to believe in ourselves instead. After all, what do we have to lose? In this episode of “Financial Crime Matters,” Kieran talks live from the ACAMS Assembly Canada with Inspector Nick Souccar, who is Officer in Charge of Federal Policing Criminal Operations, Serious and Organized Crime, and the Canadian Integrated Response to Organized Crime for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Nick and Kieran discuss law enforcement's efforts to secure Canada's borders against the importation of ‘traditional' plant-based drugs like cocaine and the flood of precursor chemicals for producing fentanyl in makeshift labs throughout the country. With 21 fentanyl-related deaths in Canada per day, efforts to fight drug trafficking and manufacturing throughout has required a massive effort, recently energized by Prime Minister Mark Carney's office of Canada's Fentanyl Czar Kevin Brosseau and the creation of the Joint Operational Intelligence Cell. In combating dangerous illicit drugs, Nick details some of the ways drug traffickers launder money and the kinds of invaluable information the financial community can provide to law enforcement. With criminal organizations regularly creating new dangerous synthetic drugs, many of them not opioids whose overdoses can be countered by Naloxone, Nick points out the need for information sharing via public and private partnerships.

I will be a member of a roundtable discussion on equine dentistry in December, along with a dozen or so other equine dentists. The goal, according to the manager of this discussion, is to table everyone's ideas and to hear everyone's opinion. We have all been asked not to denigrate contributors because equine dentists are siloed into their beliefs and are contentious in defending their beliefs as fact. Facts, however, are facts, and with them, theories can be proven. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia) famously said this: "I never guess. It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly, one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts." Unfortunately, scientists, veterinarians, and equine dentists have twisted facts to fit theories. Therefore, theories are defended with passion because there are no facts to support them, and all that is left is the emotion of being important. Countering unproven theories are data collected over 84,000 horses that I have floated. With large numbers, patterns develop. This kind of accumulation of observations is called an observational study. They are not anecdotal, which means they are not based on fact. Rather, observational studies are conducted over time with large numbers to identify patterns. They may also be called wisdom or experience and can be supported by evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). On March 20th, 1995, the Tokyo subway system was flooded with sarin nerve gas in a coordinated terrorist attack by the religious cult Aum Shinrikyō. Led by the charismatic new-age guru, Shoko Asahara, the well-funded and technologically ambitious Aum organization manufactured and deployed chemical weapons in an attempt to bring about the end of the world. They explain how learning an outcome makes jurors believe it was predictable all along, leading to exaggerated foreseeability and unrealistic expectations of what defendants “should have known.” Steve and Linda discuss how hindsight bias appears across different case types from trucking and transportation to incidents involving police officers to decades-old sexual assault and molestation cases where jurors often apply modern norms and knowledge to past events. They also highlight how technology, especially video evidence, further expands hindsight bias by giving jurors clarity and insight that defendants never had in real time. Steve and Linda also cover counterfactual thinking (i.e., “If only they had done X”) and how plaintiffs use it to oversimplify causation. Lastly, they outline how defense counsel can confront hindsight bias during voir dire by using relatable examples and consistently reframing what was knowable in the moment rather than after the fact.
