//The Wire//2300Z September 4, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: SECOND MAJOR EARTHQUAKE STRIKES AFGHANISTAN. DUNDEE HATCHET GIRL VINDICATED AS BULGARIAN COUPLE ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Afghanistan: This afternoon the USGS reported the detection of a 5.6M earthquake in the vicinity of Asadabad (a city in the eastern regions recently struck by the earlier earthquakes). Analyst Comment. This marks the third significant earthquake to strike the nation in a week. The recovery from the first major earthquake has continued as the fatality count tops 2,200x (and thousands more missing) over the past few days. No word yet on casualties caused by this most recent earthquake.United Kingdom: The two individuals who were at the center of the recent Dundee "hatchet girl" scandal have been arrested. Two weeks ago, a 14-year-old Scottish girl was arrested on weapons charges following a viral video circulating, which showed the girl brandishing a knife and a hatchet to ward off a migrant who was following her. After two weeks, the migrant (who was threatening and harassing the girls) and another unidentified woman were arrested.-HomeFront-Washington D.C. - Several developments have taken place regarding the Epstein Scandal over the past few days. Roughly 33,000 documents were released by the House Oversight Committee yesterday on a Google Drive account. Most of the files appear to once again be files that were already released, or present significant challenges to comb through.Analyst Comment: More time will be needed to determine exactly what was released in the latest round of Epstein documents. The choice to host these files on a regular consumer-grade Google Drive account instead of a legitimate governmental website is also an interesting decision, since Google Drive (and the backup provided, Dropbox) is not the best platform for sharing tens of thousands of files with millions of people. In short, for anyone interested in the files, what was hosted on Google Drive takes many hours to zip and download, whereas if it were hosted on a government website it would be easily downloadable in just a few minutes.More broadly, this is really just a continuation of the current trend; various agencies and branches of government will continue to re-release the same files over and over again, in hopes that the American people will get exasperated and forget the whole thing. Or perhaps even more to-the-point, to encourage everyone to "not see the forest, for the trees". Enough documentation has *already been* released, and enough rhetoric from the highest office in the land has already been uttered, for the average American to make a decision as to what happened in this case, and what it means for the future of the nation.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The Dundee case is a good reminder of how the benefit of the doubt often applies only one way. The knee jerk reaction of the police was to believe the Bulgarian man, who was very likely trying to traffic the children...and not the victim's testimony. When it comes to Scottish authorities, a tie goes to the unidentified migrant, so to speak. This will be a point worthy of consideration moving forward and these types of events continue. As a reminder, the effort by all mainstream media sources to paint this girl as the aggressor was significant. Considering how serious the situation is, it is very likely that the girls' initial description of events paints a very dark picture, which is probably what led to the arrests of the adults in this case. Despite the initial details of this case largely being speculative, the wider context of these details is worthy of note for reasons that many people may not be aware of. The girls initially said that the Bulgarian man tried to solicit one of the three girls in the initial group. A

Maria Popova is a Bulgarian-born writer, curator, and critic best known as the creator of The Marginalian (formerly Brain Pickings), a long-running online publication exploring art, science, philosophy, and the human condition. Doch was ist dran? Was bringt Training auf instabilen Unterlagen? Wann macht es Sinn und wann nicht? In dieser Folge gehen wir dem Thema auf den Grund!Infos und Anmeldung zu den Seminaren:https://myomechanics.de/seminare/Quellen:Kiers, H., Brumagne, S., Van Dieen, J., van der Wees, P., & Vanhees, L. In this episode, host Eva welcomes back guest Mimi to reflect on a powerful everyday moment: sitting down to colour with her daughter. What started as a simple playtime activity unexpectedly opened the door for her daughter to begin speaking more Bulgarian than ever before—naturally, spontaneously, and without prompts or corrections.Through this story, Eva and Mimi explore the deeper truth that language development isn't just about more exposure—it's about more connection. Children speak the languages that feel safe, meaningful, and emotionally engaging. And play, as Mimi describes, creates that ideal environment.Together, they discuss:Why play is the “native language of childhood” and a natural gateway to speechHow following your child's lead invites authentic language useWhy connection before correction fosters confidence and trustHow play creates rich opportunities for repetition and practice without pressureWhy this matters especially for multilingual children and familiesYou'll also hear practical tips, like a play-connection checklist for parents who want to nurture language growth at home—without turning play into a lesson. This episode is a reminder that small, everyday interactions can unlock big breakthroughs. When we show up in our children's world with curiosity and presence, language follows.
In the summer of 2015 tens of thousands of people left their homes in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq in the hope of finding a safe haven in Europe. The journeys they took were often hazardous and not everyone reached their destination. In one of the most notorious cases, 71 migrants were found dead in the back of a refrigerated truck on a motorway in Austria. They had all suffocated. Could this tragedy have been prevented? For Assignment, Nick Thorpe speaks to two of the people smugglers who are now serving life sentences in a Bulgarian prison. This week, I am joined by Ben Bruno—a Los Angeles–based trainer whose client roster ranges from professional athletes to musicians, actors and models. Known for his no-nonsense approach, Ben believes that while every person is different, the principles of good training remain the same: simple, consistent, and effective work tailored to the individual. In this conversation, Ben cuts through the noise of social media fitness trends and breaks down what really works for building strength, staying mobile, and aging well. With nearly two decades of experience, he's trained stars like Jessica Biel and Chelsea Handler, yet his message applies to anyone with a goal, a positive attitude, and the willingness to work hard. In this episode, Ben Bruno shares why consistency and the basics always outperform flashy trends, and how real-world training differs from what we see online. He breaks down the three pillars of longevity—strength, mobility, and conditioning—explains why full-body workouts often work best, and highlights the key exercises everyone should master. Ben also dives into how women can stay strong and confident into midlife, the dangers of comparison culture, and why sustainable, smart training beats gimmicks every time. *** Subscribe to The Neuro Experience for more conversations at the intersection of brain science and performance. There's a powerful story behind the creamy, tangy yogurt that originated in the mountains of Bulgaria. In this episode, I'll share the fascinating legend of how Bulgarian yogurt healed a king, the science that won a Nobel Prize, and the probiotic strains—like Lactobacillus bulgaricus—that make this yogurt one of the most healing fermented foods you can eat. I'll also explain how you can make it at home with my favorite starters, and why it's become a daily staple in my kitchen (and heart). When Konstantin Dzhengozov turned down a corporate development role in the U.S., he wasn't walking away from opportunity—he was running toward a different kind of growth. Having helped lead the FP&A function at a fast-scaling Bulgarian tech firm through its acquisition by a U.S. public company, Dzhengozov knew what came next if he stayed the course. But “the unknown… just felt right,” he tells us. So he stayed close to Bulgaria's booming startup scene—and co-founded Payhawk. In the early days of Payhawk, Dzhengozov was a one-man finance team, juggling everything from chart of accounts and payroll to fundraising and compliance. “You kind of become a bottleneck at some point,” he tells us. “The sooner you realize that, the better.” His approach: build ahead of need. His first finance hire brought Big Four audit expertise. Next came senior hires in FP&A and tax as the company expanded across Europe and the U.S.Rather than compete as another card issuer, Payhawk positioned itself as a software company from the start, charging a subscription to solve real pain points Dzhengozov had faced firsthand: poor data visibility, lack of control, and disjointed processes. The company's dual-revenue model and international-first mindset helped it raise $240 million and become Bulgaria's first unicorn, he tells us.Today, Dzhengozov envisions AI helping CFOs compress decision cycles and model complex scenarios instantly. Still, he remains grounded in principle: “Finance should be enabling the business to grow,” not just reporting on it.
After a major 8.8 earthquake struck eastern Russia earlier this week, sending warnings of a tsunami from Japan to Hawaii, it appears that Ryo Tatsuki, author of the Manga “The Future I Saw,” was accurate in predicting a mega-quake for the month of July in the eastern part of the world. But it is also easy to predict such things in areas prone to earthquakes. Alaska just had 7.3 quake in mid-July. Known as the Baba Vanga of Japan, she gets this title from the Bulgarian mystic who died in 1996 after predicting pages of future events. One of her 2025 predictions, though there seems to be no verification of it, involved a breakthrough in the search for alien life. Reading her confirmed predictions may be a disappointment though because they say that 2288 will be the year “aliens and humans make contact.” The hype over the first supposed prediction has been inflated with a new sensational story about a hostile alien object approaching earth. That story is given credibility by a Harvard University report which concluded that their theorizing on the possibly of an interstellar object called 3I/ATLAS being an “alien spacecraft” was “largely a pedagogical exercise.” *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. What if everything you've believed about soreness is wrong? How surprised would you be if the best strength training left you feeling energized, not exhausted? In this episode, I shed light on muscle soreness. Most people think a workout is only good if you're sore afterwards. Not true! You'll learn why soreness isn't a sign of success but actually a big problem, especially if you have an autoimmune condition, and which exercises contribute more to soreness.Muscle soreness is one of three things. First, soreness could be from doing a new exercise, not being used to specific movements, or doing too much. Two, too much time under tension in the eccentric loading phase of exercises. You're either doing too many reps or too many eccentric dominant moves in general. Or third, improper nutrition around workouts. When looking at impressive workouts on social media, for example, it's important to remember that the impressive workouts aren't what those people did to get there. They worked toward that goal. Some workouts make you more sore than others. There is a significant link between muscle soreness, systemic inflammation, and the power of exercise selection. Less is more! Your workout doesn't need to make you incredibly sore to have been a great one.DOMS, or delayed onset muscle soreness, is actually related to inflammation. Muscle soreness is “damage,” but remember, not all inflammation and damage is bad. It's when there is too much inflammation that it becomes a problem. Women who struggle with autoimmune issues want to avoid workouts that cause excessive soreness, because they're already susceptible to being sore, and they're already managing the inflammation related to their condition.Taking all of this into consideration, wanting a program for myself not to over-fatigue my body, I created Strength Without Stress. It's a collection of exercises that are concentric-based, where maximal load is when the muscle is in a shortened position, allowing you to lift more without soreness. Working smarter, and not harder, is the key to striking the right balance in your workouts. Emphasis is determined by the time spent under tension, and if the targeted muscle is in a lengthened, stretched, or shortened position. Once I started masterminding my workouts so that I didn't do too many eccentric exercises, where the muscle is in a lengthened position at maximal load and force, everything changed. A concentric contraction is when a muscle shortens as it produces force. It shortens to overcome the weight load to cause movement. A great example of this is a bicep curl. In general, concentric contractions don't cause soreness. An eccentric contraction is the opposite. It's when the muscle is lengthening as it produces force, and these are the special exercises that cause soreness. A great example here is a squat where you're lowering down to the ground and you're resisting the load that you're holding, and then you're returning to a standing position. So the exercises that are eccentric, dominant, and therefore more taxing to the muscle, and therefore tend to cause soreness, are barbell back squats, lunges of any kind, Bulgarian split squats, Romanian deadlift, good mornings, bench press or a bicep chest press, chest fly, overhead tricep extension, supine hamstring curl, and push ups. My Strength Without Stress program combines all of my favorite concentric exercises with just the bare minimum eccentric exercises. Remember, soreness isn't the goal. Finding the perfect collection of exercises where you can actually increase your weight loads consistently over time, so that you experience intense moments during a set is. Strength training should make you feel great the next day, not knock you down!If you want access to my 4-week Strength Without Stress program for...
