Pastor argues that both the "Emerging Church" (laser lights/fog) and "Ancient-Future" movements (liturgical/incense) can fall into the same trap if the focus is on the experience rather than faithfulness to Scripture.• The Goal: To be faithful, not "traditional" or "contemporary."• The Authority: Sanctification comes through Truth (the Word), not tradition.Traditionalism Elevates Man Over GodBy prioritizing the "tradition of the elders" over the commandments of God, the Pharisees effectively claimed that man's word is more authoritative than God's. Pastor highlights the practice of "Corban" (Mark 7:11) as a manipulative use of religious tradition to avoid the biblical command to honor and support one's parents.Proper Engagement with TraditionTo benefit from traditions without becoming a traditionalist, Pastor proposes two filters:• Subservience to Scripture: If a tradition opposes the Word or becomes a heavy burden, it must be dropped. The Word of God is sufficient; tradition is optional.• Prioritize the Goal: Ask why a tradition exists. If the purpose is no longer relevant (illustrated by the "cutting the ends off the ham" anecdote), the energy should be redirected toward the mission of the Great Commission.ConclusionThe Pharisees missed the presence of the Eternal Creator because they were preoccupied with an argument over hand washing. Human traditions are often blinded to the clear teaching of Scripture. Traditionalism is a danger Christians must avoid because it is a prejudice they are all subject to. Perhaps no area of the Christian life is more prone to traditionalism than worship. Whether as an individual or entire denomination, one can easily read their prejudices back into Scripture. In this sermon on Romans 12:6–8 titled “Worship, the Old and the New,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones calls Bible-believing Christians to examine their traditions. He asks them to consider the general impression of the New Testament as they read about the early church engaging in worship. Seeking to counter the resurgence among evangelicals towards a liturgical form, Dr. Lloyd-Jones answers the liturgical arguments by drawing attention to passages such as Romans 12:6–8. While there is continuity between Old Testament worship – with its emphasis on prescribed forms – there is discontinuity as well. Of course, this difference is not one in kind but in degree. Moreover, as figures in church history have justified set prayers and liturgical services in order to prevent error from creeping into the church, this should only be a temporary expedience, says Dr. Lloyd-Jones. Nevertheless, Christ is able to gift all to pray, preach, and teach in a biblical manner avoiding doctrinal errors. The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Ep. 202 Underneath the Nazi Experiment lay a mythology. That mythology was called "the Myth of the Blood" by Hitler's chief ideologist Alfred Rosenberg. Rosenberg recorded this mythology in a very peculiar book called The Myth of the Twentieth Century, originally published in 1930. In it, Rosenberg lays out a complete treatise of what Nazis were supposed to believe about the world and their own roles in it, answering fundamental questions like how the world is organized, what is its history, what is the meaning of that history, who are we in the world, and what are we called to do; that is, fundamentally religious questions. In Volume 13 of his Nazi Experiment podcast series on the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay introduced the text of The Myth of the Twentieth Century by reading from the first chapter, "Race and Race-Soul," where he suggested the book deserved greater treatment in its own series. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, Lindsay inaugurates that series with a further exploration from the first chapter of Rosenberg's Myth. In this episode I am once again joined by Dr Francisco José Luis, scholar of Indo-Iranian Studies and Comparative Religion trained at the Sorbonne, Paris and SOAS, London. Francisco shares his research into the links between Indian and Tibetan tantric practices and the mystical teachings of Shi'ite Islam, reveals the prevalence of lucid dreaming techniques in antiquity, and emphasises the importance of the Silk Road in transmitting esoteric knowledge between civilisations.
