What makes Eels fans the way they are? Superstitious, never thinking their team are home in a big game and still somewhat optimistic? The 1998 preliminary final against Canterbury could be the answer. Up 18-2 in the 70th minute and they lose the game. I am joined by Mary from Ladies Who League to discuss what was her first Eels heartbreak and we posit what it would be like to be an Eels fan if they hadn't lost this game. Everyone who wins gets a Paul Cariage Award which would likely not mean the same thing in our HyperTheticRL universe.
Our women's rugby league calls have been extremely popular so far in 2021, and we can't resist popular demand, so Splinters this week is our highlights of the past weekend's fixture, featuring a super special guest from one of the great podcasts, Ladies Who League. So kick back and enjoy what was a top game of football with a sensational call team!
It is a brave new world for Sixties and Forty20 as they bring you this episode of The Tip Sheet on location at the home of the Eels - right from the green on Eels' Lane! Just a precautionary word, brave new worlds come with plenty of gremlins in the system, so please excuse us for some issues with reverb this week. This week features a packed ticket as the boys open up the show with a lengthy chat to Joey Grima as the club insider breaks down the triple homestand against the Steelers on the weekend. With a win in the Matts, a loss in the Tarsha Gale and a draw in the SG Ball there is plenty to discuss as Joey brings his footy acumen and nous to the table. The fellas blitz through the results from the weekend before they are joined by another special guest in Mary Konstantopoulos. The founder of Ladies Who League and a dyed-in-the-wool Parra supporter drops by to chat with the boys. They talk about the rise and rise of LWL and just how reaching Mary's impact has been across women's sport. Mary's interest in barracking for the underdog players is revealed and the trio discuss where that all stemmed from before they finish the discussion by assessing Parra's prospects in 2021. The show closes with various pieces of housekeeping, from a rumoured Mitchell Moses extension to an actual upgrade and extension to young centre Will Penisini. The Leagues Club elections are still running so be sure to vote before 5PM on March 10th and lastly - check out the new documentary by Adam Hawse and the NRL that just dropped on the Eels' 1986 triumph!

Mary Konstantopoulos may be a lawyer by day, but she has made it her mission to support, grow and enable women in sports across Australia. Having launched Ladies who League, Mary now runs more passion projects that have become far more than just a passion, including Ladies who Legspin, Ladies Who Lineout and Ladies who Leap! In this episode, Mary chats to us about how women's sport has changed in Australia, what needs to be done for it to grow further and how she is doing her [BIG] part in making all of this happen!
One of the main themes that run through many of my conversations on Sparta Chicks Radio is around the concept that “you can’t be what you can’t see”. This week’s guest is on a mission to change what you can see - and by extension, be. Mary Konstantopoulos is a lawyer who, in her “spare time”, is the force behind the “Ladies Who” media company - or dare I say growing empire - that advocates for, and shares stories of, women in sport here in Australia. She hosts two podcasts on the ABC Grandstand radio network; Ladies Who League (about rugby league) and Ladies Who Legspin (about cricket). Mary’s passion for sport developed as a result of her desire to spend more time with her Dad who was (and remains) a passionate Parramatta Eels supporter in the National Rugby League (NRL) competition. Yet she describes in this conversation a sense of shame she sometimes feels because it never occurred to her to ask if women also played the sport. In this conversation, we discuss: - how her life has revolved around sport since she was a young child growing up with her two brothers, - why she was motivated to throw herself into all sports as a kid (despite not being very good at any of them), - what prompted her to launch the ‘Ladies Who League’ blog (which at the time was about the men’s competition), - the evolution of the ‘Ladies Who’ media company, - her experience with the Imposter Complex, - why it’s important to give yourself credit for your hard work and success, rather than attributing it to luck, and - how she deals with online trolling and public criticism. The last episode of season 2018 is here, and for the first time in a long time we're a whole Mitch short! In his stead we're joined by Mary K from Ladies Who League to discuss the inaugural NRLW Grand Final and this year's Reserve Grade Super Bowl, as well as reviewing The Biggest Dance Of All: the NRL Grand Final. We'll also touch on the Koori Knockout, a bit of news, and answer your questions as always. Apologies for the audio this week - a cable got lost in the move so it's not the best quality, but did what we could to put out as good a show as usual. Once again, a big thank you to everyone who's supported us through the year: you're the main reason we do the show, and we look forward to sharing a couple of hours a week with you again next season!
