In this post, I'm diving deep into strategies that can help you build a fantasy football team you're excited about. I've played fantasy for over 20 years, and I know the most unsatisfying thing you can do is pick players based on analysts' recommendations without considering your own preferences. If you're going to lose, at least do it with players you love.## Understanding the Fantasy Draft MindsetFantasy football is not just about collecting good players; it's about finding those who fit into a system that maximizes their potential. Many fantasy managers fall into the trap of picking players based on name recognition or last year's performance, ignoring critical factors like volume, coaching, and offensive line quality.### The Importance of Situational AwarenessWhen drafting, ask yourself: "What situation is this player in?" For example, a talented player in a struggling offensive system may not yield the points you expect. It's crucial to analyze not just the player's skill set but also their environment. Are they on a team that prioritizes their role? Will they have the volume needed to produce points?## The Cheat Code: Rushing QuarterbacksIn the 2026 draft doctrine, rushing quarterbacks are no longer a luxury; they are essential. They provide scoring through multiple avenues, making them significantly more valuable than traditional pocket passers. For instance, Josh Allen not only produces elite passing numbers but also adds rushing touchdowns, making him a vital asset in fantasy.### Why Rushing Yards MatterRushing quarterbacks can score points more efficiently. For example, they gain one point for every ten rushing yards compared to one point for every 25 passing yards. Additionally, rushing touchdowns score six points versus four for passing touchdowns. This efficiency means that a quarterback who can rush can accumulate fantasy points rapidly, even in subpar passing games.## The Impact of Coaching ChangesCoaching changes can significantly alter a player's fantasy value. However, it's essential to look beyond the surface. Just because a team has a new coach doesn't mean their players will automatically improve. Analyzing previous coaching success and how it translates to the new team is critical.### Evaluating Coaching MovesFor example, when Clint Kubiak left Seattle and joined the Las Vegas Raiders, he brought a successful offensive approach that could benefit players like Ashton Genty and Brock Bowers. By assessing the coach's past performance and the new roster's needs, you can identify potential breakout players who will thrive in their new environment.## Building a Draft Board that WorksCreating a solid draft board is crucial. You want to avoid getting swayed by viral clips from training camps or hype around players who may not deliver. Focus on data-driven insights and proven performance rather than just the latest social media buzz.### Key Steps to Consider1. **Research Player Situations**: Understand the context in which players will be performing. 2. **Monitor Coaching Changes**: Analyze how new coaches have historically utilized their players.3. **Prioritize Rushing Ability**: Don't overlook the significance of rushing production in quarterbacks and running backs.4. **Draft for Value**: Seek players who will provide maximum output relative to their draft position.
