Finding God in Our Pain
The Dating Manifesto: Author, Lisa Anderson offers hope for dating after 40

Finding God in Our Pain

SUMMARY: -Dating is harder today due to digital misrepresentation and added life complexities after 40 (widowhood, divorce, family-of-origin issues); real-life community is essential for discernment and support. -Prioritize meeting and observing potential partners in Christian community and everyday life to see a 360-degree picture (church involvement, service, friendships, parenting). -Four non-negotiables for compatibility: 1) a disciple of Jesus (vibrant, fruit-bearing faith), 2) adult readiness for marriage (responsibility, job, ownership), 3) humility and teachability, 4) generally aligned direction/calling. -Avoid “project” dating and rescuer roles; don't ignore red flags—marry a whole person as you bring your whole self, with ownership and healing underway. -Therapy can be valuable, but vet carefully; seek biblically grounded counseling and community oversight (e.g., Focus on the Family's vetted counselor network). -Lisa's book, The Dating Manifesto, urges intentional, biblically honoring dating, debunks rom-com myths, and equips singles to live with purpose and hope while navigating grief and unmet expectations. -Churches often center on families; singles can be part of the solution by serving, leading, and creating community rather than criticizing from the sidelines. -Treat early dates as exploratory conversations (not instant marital auditions); ask your own questions, keep emotional perspective, and ensure you can remain in community, in a healthy way, if it doesn't work out. -Discuss difficult topics (past relationships, addictions, pornography) as the relationship progresses; look for transparency, accountability, and community verification—humble, teachable responses are key. -Identity in Christ anchors dating and marriage; sexual integrity matters (avoid premarital sex and cohabitation), trust God's timing, and “wait well” by abiding in Christ, engaging community, and pursuing purpose with open hands.   PODCAST INTRO: Dating today can feel like defusing a minefield—especially after 40, when life experience, grief, divorce, or long seasons of singleness shape how we show up. So my guest today, Lisa Anderson is an author, she is the director of Boundless at Focus on the Family, and hosts The Boundless Show podcast. Our conversation is based on a biblical viewpoint of dating. I know many think it too strict but if we're honest, God's ways always bring life, peace, joy, protection and that's a pretty good return on your investment. Lisa lays out some clear boundaries on dating and even sharing how to reflect on our own personal wholeness (meaning in what mental/emotional condition are we showing up, which can also help us know if we're even ready to be dating). She talks about how to find a mate who is healthy themselves and what does healthy even mean. Her point being, if you're dating after 40 then there's been a lot of life that has happened. That's a reality that we must fold into the process and so how can we discern between healthy, a hot mess, a fixer upper? I don't know about you but at my age the thought of a fixer upper is not appealing but Lisa takes the reality of how life takes it toll on us and she breaks down on exactly how to tell if this is someone who has taken responsibility and is moving forward, vs stagnate or a straight up red flag. Oh and then there's the challenges of digital dating. That seems to raise the bar on deception but in all fairness I've had friends who have used digital dating and they had good experiences. So don't be dismayed, Lisa says there's some good news. You don't need perfect conditions to move forward, you need community, clarity, and courage. And that's what Lisa delivers in this conversation. Real quick, Here are 2 of her dating suggestions that I think are solid: Start with real community One of the safer places is to meet someone in an environment where you spend time. Do you have a hobby, do you volunteer, where do you go to church & do you participate/serve at church? Ideally, you're looking for like minded people and they're going to be in the same places you are. Lisa says Community is the safest place to meet people and the wisest place to test new relationships. I thought that smart because you have an environment where people know the both of you. Date with purpose—but keep it simple I personally feel that dating is for marriage so I think that would put a lof of pressure….so Lisa was saying Think “exploratory conversation,” not instant compatibility quiz. It's just coffee. Ask good questions. Just relax and Lisa reminds us… Until there's a ring, you're a brother and sister in Christ—treat each other that way. I'll wrap up after this quick list. Here's 4 non-negotiables to begin with. In our conversation Lisa breaks these down even more with great insight, examples and wisdom. A disciple of Jesus: Not just church attendance—active pursuit of Christ, fruit of the Spirit, repentance, and engaged Christian community. In a position to marry: someone who has done or is doing their homework on their personal healing journey, shows responsibility, forgiveness, financial steadiness, follow-through. Humble and teachable: Open to counsel, not playing the blame game, and receptive to wise instruction. Generally headed in the same direction: Lisa looks at personal callings on their life and rhythms that can realistically unite for a stronger bond. The Kewanee Public Library has officially welcomed new director David Eckert, who brings three decades of library experience, including a start as a children's librarian. Library staff are encouraging community participation in several upcoming programs. Due to Baker & Taylor's closure, the library's Boundless app for ebooks will be replaced by The Palace Project soon, while Hoopla remains unaffected. Residents are invited to donate extra seeds for the library's growing seed exchange and contribute nonperishable food and hygiene items for the local food pantry—the collection runs through December 22nd. Santa visits the library on December 13th, complete with photo ops and activity kits for kids. David, the new library director, brings three decades of library experience—including a stint as a children's librarian—and even has a background in music, having played double bass professionally before joining the library world. David and his family are settling into the area, buying a house in Toulon, and are excited about the bigger yard for their two large dogs. He's looking forward to the region's Amtrak station for easy trips to Chicago and exploring local towns like the Quad Cities, Peoria, and Princeton. David hopes his innovative ideas from past roles will benefit the library community, even if he may have to start making homemade pizza.

What happens when a Protestant Christian delves into the philosophy of Russia's most controversial thinker? Jay Rogers, a heart transplant survivor and longtime student of Russian culture, takes us on a fascinating journey through his engagement with Alexander Dugan's Fourth Political Theory.Having traveled extensively throughout Russia and Ukraine during the pivotal post-Soviet years, Rogers brings unique firsthand experience to this conversation. He explains how his observations of Christianity's revival among the Russian intelligentsia and his disillusionment with mainstream Western media narratives led him to explore alternative political perspectives.Rogers artfully unpacks the connections between Dugan, Samuel Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations," and Alexander Solzhenitsyn's prophetic warnings about Western liberalism. He argues that these thinkers anticipated our current global shift from nation-states to civilization-states—a transformation reshaping international relations before our eyes.At the heart of this discussion lies a profound critique of liberalism's impact on Christianity. Rogers suggests that the liberal emphasis on individual autonomy fundamentally contradicts the community-centered teachings of scripture. This realization helped him understand why traditional values are making a comeback across political lines, creating unexpected alliances between previously opposed groups.Perhaps most compelling is Rogers' nuanced view of cultural diversity. Drawing from his experiences as a teacher in Florida, he rejects both xenophobia and liberal multiculturalism, instead advocating for a world where distinct civilizations can coexist and learn from each other while maintaining their unique identities.Whether you're politically conservative, progressive, or somewhere in between, this conversation challenges conventional categories and offers fresh perspectives on our rapidly changing world. Discover why engaging with challenging thinkers like Dugan might be essential for anyone seeking to understand—and shape—our collective future.Send us a text Musis by Bitterlake, Used with Permission, all rights to BitterlakeSupport the showCrew:Host: C. Henry brings his unique journey from CIO to design thinking expert, whilst Vala shares insights from his decade as Salesforce's chief evangelist. We examine Salesforce's V2MOM framework—a radical transparency tool that aligns 80,000 employees—and discuss why the best implementations often mean resisting customisation. The conversation tackles uncomfortable truths about autonomous vehicles, digital labour, and the erosion of human agency, whilst exploring how companies can eliminate waste through agentic AI. Henry and Vala challenge the notion that relationships will diminish in an AI-driven world, arguing instead that they'll become more critical. We discuss enterprise fitness, the importance of identifying organisational blockages, and why trust—defined as competence plus character—remains the foundation for transformation in an age where we're the last generation managing only people.

Who/what is God? I have had people say to me, I believe in God’s existance but I don’t need to study the Bible to know Him! But belief in His existence is not enough! Even satan and his demons believe in God’s existence! It is only through the Bible we can study God and His relationship with the universe. All we can know about God is not contained in the Bible, but the Bible contains all we can know about God during our earthly life! That is because God is infinite and beyond our limitations of space and time! Yet the God we as Christian disciples follow and worship, is knowable through the Bible. This means that God is a personal God and not a remote being. That is a key to studying Him! He wants to be known and has given us the Bible in order for us to do so. How can we know about God? In the Bible, what we know of God are the fundamental qualities or powers of His being. The Bible elucidates statements about God, by God, through which we try and understand God, using our finite minds. The Bible reveals God to us! God is spirit, yet a personal and infinite being (John 4:24). He is one in substance, nature and being and incapable of division (Deuteronomy 6v4). Yet He is three coequal people, or the Trinity! It is through the Bible we discover what pleases, angers, offends, or gives joy Him! The words revealed in the Bible describe His attributes! The fact we are able to take hold and understand this about an infinite God is evidence that God desires to be known by humans! So what are some of the attributes of God? There are two different kinds of attributes: natural and moral. 1. Natural Attributes a. Transcendent - God's self-existence apart from and independent of creation. This reflects God’s majesty and greatness. Romans 11:33; 1Chronicles 29:11; 1Kings 8:27 b. Immanent/Omnipresent - God is wholly present everywhere. God fills the universe in all it's parts without division Psalm 139:7-12; Jerermiah 23:23-24 c. Omnipotent - God has power to do all things that are the object of power. With God all things are possible Luke 1:37. He is El Shaddai or God Almighty. Jerermiah 32:17-18 Nothing is too hard for you. d. Omniscient - God has perfect knowledge of all things - actual, past, present, future and possible. 1 John 3:20 God knows all things; Psalm 47:5 Infinite understanding. e. Infinite - God has no limits. He has an internal and a qualitative absence of limitation. Boundless activity - Romans 11:33; 1Timothy1:16; Psalm 147:5 f. Immutable - God is unchangeable. Malachi 3:6 - I AM God and I change not; Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. g. Eternal - God is without beginning or end. He is the alpha and omega. God is outside of time - time is in God, and He is free from the succession of time. God lives in the eternal present - past, present and future, are NOW for God - He is the I AM YAHWEH Exodus 3:14. From everlasting to everlasting you are God. 1 Timothy1:17; Psalm 102:7 h. Spirit God is a free personal Spirit · God is not material. He is invisible and indestructible. John 4:24; 1Timothy1:17; 1Timothy6:15-16 · God is Life Jn 14:6. Energy & activity! · God has Personality. Self-consciousness & communicative! 2. Moral Attributes a. Goodness - absolute perfection. Seeking creations' welfare. Love - God is love 1 John 4:8-10. God communicates and gives of Himself. Grace - God gives us what we do not deserve. God's riches at Christ’s expense Ephesians 2:7; The unmerited goodness of God John 1:16. Mercy - God does not give us what we deserve. The goodness of God to those in distress - tenderness & compassion (Ephesians 2:3-5) Long-suffering - God is slow to anger. God longs to forgive (Exodus 34:6-7) Truth - John 14:6 The revelation source and foundation of all truth is God/Jesus b. Holiness - moral excellence and perfection of God. Separation from sin. What God is!! Heb 7:26 "Be holy, for I am Holy". c. Righteousness - Holiness in action. God's actions conform to His Holiness. Justice deals with the absence of righteousness. Sin must be dealt with – (Genesis 18:25 & Psalm 89:14) Why do we study this God? There are at least 4 reasons! a) Avoids confusion! As we study God, we come to know truths about Him and are able to discern what are true and false facts about Him! "Truth combats error" Satan distorts scripture to put people off the truth. b) Truth develops character 2 Peter 1:3-9 - The strongest Christian disciples are those with a good growing knowledge of biblical truth. Since study increases our knowledge of God, it increases the possibilities of love, growth and service of the Christian disciple. We study it to put it into practice! What we believe about God, affects our behaviour! James 1:22 says "We must be doers of the Word not just hearers of this is to be effective." c) We are commanded to grow in our knowledge of God - 2 Timothy 4:2-4 d) This God is to be worshipped and part of our service and submission to this God, is that worship is given to Him alone (Deuteronomy 5v6-9). As humans we are created in His image, and as Christian disciples we were bought at a price when Jesus died on the cross and we accepted Him as our Lord and saviour. He is due our worship and reverence! It is on worship that I hope to discuss next time! One of the best books regarding getting to know God is the appropriately titled “Knowing God” by JI Packer - it’s a thoroughly modern and readable classic! For more to think about, please do read for yourself 2 Peter 1:3-9. Ask yourself the following questions, writing them down if you can, and see how you respond or react to them. Then why not share your answers with your spouse or a close friend, so that you can pray over any issues together. Q1. From my knowledge of God, what do I find comforting? Q2. From my knowledge of God, what do I find disturbing? Q3. How has my knowledge of God grown and affected my behaviour since I became a Christian disciple? For the Paris-born, New York–based artist Camille Henrot, time practically never stands still. Across her work in film, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation—and soon, live performance—Henrot has developed ways of stretching and distorting time, seamlessly shifting from moments of potent, rapid-fire intensity to quiet reflection. While her work carries a theory-driven ferocity and intelligence, it's also incredibly playful. Hers is serious art that manages—often with a knowing, subtle wink—to not take itself too seriously. On this episode of Time Sensitive, Henrot considers the subjectivity of speed and slowness; previews her upcoming first-ever performance-art piece, slated to premiere in 2026 and a collaboration with the nonprofit Performa; and reflects on why, for her, a work is technically never finished. She also shares her fraught fascination with animals, childhood, and the climate crisis—the intersection of which she examines in-depth in her soon-to-debut film “In the Veins.”Special thanks to our Season 12 presenting sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:Camille Henrot[4:30] RoseLee Goldberg[4:30] Performa Biennial[6:37] Buster Keaton[6:37] Tex Avery[7:03] Estelle Hoy[7:19] Adam Charlap Hyman of Charlap Hyman & Herrero[16:10] “In the Veins” (2026)[17:45] "Grosse Fatigue"[17:45] Massimiliano Gioni[38:51] Roland Barthes[45:36] Pierre Huyghe[47:51] Ikebana Sogetsu[51:46] Okwui Enwezor[55:03] Hypernormalisation by Adam Curtis (2016)[59:51] Jacob Bromberg[59:51] Akwetey Orraca-Tetteh[1:08:50] Adrienne Rich[1:08:50] Ursula K. Recent headlines suggested a link between acetaminophen during pregnancy and autism or ADHD, sparking fear and second-guessing. We dig into what the studies actually say, why association is not causation, and how large sibling-based analyses change the picture. Boundless Medical Director Dr. Cynthia Ripsin and State Director of Behavioral Health and Education Services Kendra Hill join host, Scott Light, to talk plainly about fever risk in pregnancy, the role of safe treatment, and how sensational messaging and media coverage can backfire when it pushes parents away from evidence-based care. Our conversation walks through how we answer one of if not the hardest question we hear as of late: Did Tylenol cause my child's autism? The short answer is no. The fuller answer starts with listening. We trace how people heard the news, clarify the language used in studies, and rebuild trust by explaining methods and what robust population data can and cannot prove. Along the way, we confront confirmation bias, the pull of social media, and the lasting shadow of long debunked vaccine-autism claim. This episode also explores identity and support: why some people embrace difference over disability, why others face real disability from co-occurring intellectual or language challenges.  Plus, how to respect both realities. Then we examine new treatment chatter around folinic acid, separating legitimate uses from overhyped generalizations. Our goal is practical and compassionate: help families make safer choices, understand study quality, and navigate care without shame or blame. If clear, steady guidance is what you need amid the noise, you're in the right place with Boundless. Rebranding a nonprofit isn't about swapping logos or picking trendier colors— it's about removing friction between people and the help they need. We sit down with three dynamic marketing leaders who have guided large behavioral health and human services organizations through bold transformations, unifying dozens of legacy brands, clarifying their promise, and building trust where it counts: at the front door to care. Your team can learn so much from this team of experts:  Renee Stein, VP of Marketing and Communications at Boundless, Jana Greig, EVP of Administration at Brightli, and Whitney McChane, Chief Marketing Officer at Clarvida.  These vastly accomplished executives explore the practical “fourth leg” of brand beyond positioning, identity, and message: consistency. You'll hear how disciplined, research‑driven choices led one team to retire 27 names in favor of a single, bilingual brand designed to feel warm, human, and memorable in a sea of clinical lookalikes. Another guest shares the path to becoming the nation's largest nonprofit behavioral health provider under one name, and why internal alignment—across leaders, clinicians, and support staff—made the difference between a clever concept and a living, breathing brand.Storytelling sits at the center of the work. We dig into employee‑generated content that outperforms polished videos, including the tools and prompts that make it scalable. We highlight a traveling portrait exhibit that invites people to tell their own mental health stories, reducing stigma and sparking action. Along the way, we connect data to human impact, reframing marketing as part of the continuum of care: informed campaigns raise awareness, lower barriers, and turn curiosity into contact.Plus, don't miss our 'Mission Moment' on inclusive outreach roles that unlock new revenue and representation in the community. If this conversation gave you a useful idea or two, follow the show, share it with a colleague, and leave a quick review to help more nonprofit leaders find it.Send us a text

Recorded during A Boundless Evening at HUME Los Angeles, this fireside chat brings together curiosity, science, and honest reflections on health, performance, and purpose. We start with the rhythms of daily life—how I approach mornings, training, and eating while traveling—and why balance beats perfection. You’ll hear how my cyclical keto approach helps me stay sharp and grounded while still enjoying the moments that matter. From movement habits and fasted training to the little environmental tweaks that keep me active throughout the day, we explore how health can be both sustainable and joyful. We dive into the evolving world of biohacking—cold plunges, nootropics, and stress adaptation—through both skepticism and lived experience. The conversation goes deeper than supplements or science. We reflect on the connection between discipline and creativity, the balance between ambition and family, and why my personal philosophy centers on healthspan, not just lifespan.Full show notes: https://bengreenfieldlife.com/firesidechatla/ Episode Sponsors: Pique: Pique Teas are where plants and science intersect to produce teas and supplements of unrivaled efficacy, purity, and convenience. Today, on Karl and Crew, we kicked off our weekly theme of “abundance out of scarcity “ with a discussion about how God provides when it seems that there is nothing. We turned to the phone lines to ask listeners the question, “How did God bring abundance out of your scarcity?” We then had Rachel Faulkner Brown join us to share her faith journey after losing two husbands before she was 31 years old, and the journey of widowhood since then. Rachel is the founder of Never Alone Widows, the largest Christian widow’s ministry in the country. She also hosts the podcast, There is More Podcast, and co-wrote Father’s House, an eight-week video-driven Bible study. She has also written the book, “Widow’s Might: 365 Days of Strength for Grief and Loss- Find Comfort, Hope, and Healing. We also had Lisa Anderson join us to discuss the importance of healthy relationships for singles and how to cultivate and find them. Lisa is the director of Boundless and Young Adults at Focus on the Family. She also hosts The Boundless Show, a national radio program and podcast. She is also the author of “The Dating Manifesto: A Drama-Free Plan for Pursuing Marriage with Purpose.” If you're looking to hear a particular segment from the show, look at the following time stamps: Caller Segment (How did God bring abundance out of your scarcity) [10:31] Rachel Faulkner Brown Interview (Walking with God through Widowhood ) [15:49 ] Lisa Anderson Interview (Healthy Singleness 101) [31:18 ]Donate to Moody Radio: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/morningshowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this message from John 4, Pastor Philip Miller shows us four surprises: a surprising rebuke, faith, healing, and Healer.
