“He that eats my capon, shall know me better.” — All's Well That Ends Well (Act II, Scene 2) Roasted to perfection and served at noble feasts, the capon—a castrated rooster prized for its tenderness and rich flavor—was one of the most luxurious poultry options available in Shakespeare's England. While today the word may be unfamiliar to many, in the 16th and 17th centuries, the capon was a delicacy, frequently mentioned in early modern literature, including a dozen times across Shakespeare's plays. But what did it mean culturally and culinarily to serve a capon in the Elizabethan era? How were they raised, what status did they hold in society, and what does their appearance in Shakespeare's works reveal about daily life and dining customs of the time? To help us explore the fascinating world of capons, roosters, and poultry practices in Renaissance England, our guest this week is food historian and prolific author Ken Albala. Hosted on Acast. Chuck Rocha returns from the mangroves of Mexico, roosters and all, just in time for a deep dive into the "Big, Beautiful Budget Bill" that's anything but beautiful—especially for Latinos. Joined by Senior Washington Correspondent for The Independent Eric Garcia and co-host Mike Madrid, the trio breaks down what really went down on Capitol Hill, from backroom Senate deals to ICE's ballooning budget, and why Latinos—particularly Latinas—might be the sleeping giant of 2024. They tackle Medicaid cuts, Trump's tax tricks (including the tip bait), and the rise of a potential paramilitary ICE force bigger than the U.S. Marine Corps. Does Naden come back in? Or does Taylan May get a shot?On the recruitment front, the boys state their position on signing a veteran wrecking ball prop from Canberra. We also take a look at 'Richo's meter' - are the Tigers slowly moving up to average??Oh, and Steve has a rant about the price of food at the football! It's great to be able to bring you all a happier edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast. The countdown is on until the official return of the Warriors women. After five years in the wilderness, the Wah-hines are finally back in the NRLW and will mark their return against the Roosters this weekend. Sports reporter Jonty Dine joined Lisa Owen
It's the midweek edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast with Eddie, Steve, and Declan. After a promising start to the year, we weary Wests Tigers fans are trying to pick ourselves off the floor, and the podcast boys are no different. There is a preview of our sides clash with the Roosters, a game that potentially has all the hallmarks of a Wests Tigers flogging. But, with the Roosters also missing several star players, are they ripe for a loss in this one? The boys also dig into some of Shane Richardson's quotes on departed hooker, Tallyn De Silva. Was the boss right to let the talented rake walk now? Or is the club continuing to just be the NRL walkovers? Also up for discussion on this edition of the pod is the future of coach Benji Marshall, with the question being - can he withstand this firestorm? Is he too tight with certain players? Should he be joining in at training? And, is he safe beyond 2025? Plus, Eddie, Steve, and Declan rip into a few journalists and ex-players looking for clicks! And Yioti's quiz brings up a player who had big shoes to fill! Don't forget, win, lose, or draw, to leave your 'One Word' submission on the Roosters game in the live match thread on the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum. And feel free to join in the discussion on any Wests Tigers topic as well! Let's hope that the boys can jag a rare Roosters win this weekend, and we'll see you for the post-match edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast on Monday morning.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Another mishnah placed on the previous daf: Commercial prohibitions when attempting business with idolaters - but specifically all year long, and not just at the time of their festivals. Among the prohibited items to sell to these non-Jews is a white rooster - though if sold among other roosters, and with a clipped toe (so not perfect for sacrifice), then they may be sold. Plus, the question of selling a damaged white rooster to one who asks for it. Does that mean the non-Jews don't want to make this offering, or are they putting one over on the seller? Also, a much longer, more detailed tractate of Avodah Zarah in Abraham's time (Note: of the 400 chapters mentioned - "400" is generally understood in the Gemara as being the language of exaggeration).
