Auckland FC is one match away from making history, having made it to the A-League Grand Finals in their second-ever season. They're facing Syndey FC tonight at a sold out Mt Smart Stadium. Now a hugely respected football analyst, Erik Paartalu won two A-League championships and a premiership as part of the Brisbane Roar. He told Piney that Auckland FC is really feared around the League. “I think when you talk to other teams about playing Auckland, coming here was very difficult last year. This season, not so much, but tonight they've got to go back to the old Auckland.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Tonight is a night for the history books, as Auckland FC looks to claim the A-League title in their second ever season. They're going up against Sydney FC at a sold-out Mt Smart Stadium – the first time New Zealand has hosted a Grand Final. And watching from the sidelines is Oli Sail, a goalie for the team who was knocked out of the season in February with a knee injury. He told Piney that while it's important to enjoy the energy and excitement around a home Grand Final, it's also important to separate yourself from that and work under the notion that it's just another game. But Sail says the way the city and the media have gotten behind the team is amazing. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's the biggest day in Auckland FC's short history. Just two years into their existence, the team is facing Sydney FC in the A-League Grand Final tonight at a sold-out Mt Smart Stadium. CEO Nick Becker told Piney it's definitely a bit of a pinch me moment. He says they wanted to be competitive, wanted to win silverware, and it's an incredible feeling to be able to right, today's the big dance, this is what we've worked so hard for. It's a massive night tonight for footy fans, with Auckland FC facing off against Sydney FC in the A-League Grand Final at Go Media Stadium. CEO Nick Becker speaks about the club's explosive rise in just two seasons as momentum builds to the main event.
Auckland FC has used its underdog tag as motivation to pound Adelaide United 3-nil and make the A-League grand final. The tie was deadlocked heading into the return leg across the Tasman, but Black Knights coach Steve Corica says his team was fired up by critics saying they couldn't win. Auckland FC won the two-leg tie 4-1 on aggregate and will now meet the Newcastle Jets or Sydney FC in the grand final – a first-ever for a New Zealand men's club. Striker Sam Cosgrove found the back of the net with a penalty, and told Piney in terms of a satisfying performance, it was right up there. Auckland FC have reached the grand final in their second A-League season. The Black Knights picked a great time to record their first-ever win in Adelaide, downing United 3-nil to win the tie 4-1 overall. Former All White Fred de Jong joined D'Arcy to unpack the team's victory. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Auckland FC are through to the A-League semifinals are one of the most dramatic nights in the club's short history. Last weekend's elimination final against Melbourne FC went right through to penalties before goalkeeper Michael Woud's decisive save and a spot-kick from Dan Hall ticked the Black Knights over into a 7-6 win. The focus is now shifting to a two-legged semifinal against Adelaide United – the first leg kicking off tonight at Mt Smart. Woud told Piney that ultimately it comes down to luck a little bit, but there is still an element of strategy. “And, y'know, lucky enough, we got it right once, which was enough on the weekend to win the game.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This year's finals series in men's A-League football could be one for the history books. Auckland FC has made it through to the semifinals after a dramatic penalty shootout with Melbourne FC saw them clinch the win. They're now set to face off against Adelaide United in a two leg clash – the first of which is taking place tonight at Mt Smart. Adelaide United legend and former Socceroo Bruce Djite told Piney the intensity will be high, and players will be conscious about not making mistakes since it's only two legs. “You're better off finishing nil-all and going into the second leg.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Auckland FC's unlikely journey toward A-League supremacy continues this evening as the plucky lads out of Penrose look to roll Adelaide in the first leg of their semi final series. Fingers crossed that the faithful turn up to scream and shout and spit and drink and cheer and chant AKLFC to a victory, to set up next week's return leg. The faithful will turn up I'm sure, the faithful being the Port, the gang of supporters that have been a constant since the team's inception. As for the rest, we'll know early this evening. Plainly, the A-League's tone-deaf pricing of last week's thrilling knock out fixture versus Melbourne City was injurious to the spectating body count, the warm prop attendance was a depressing 11,000ish. There were mitigating factors, such as the clash with local football and the unexpected nature of the game. AKLFC fluffed their lines against Sydney the previous week and instead of having a week off, they were thrown into an elimination match. The most telling issue though was the insane ticket pricing that cut the casual fanbase off at the knees. AKLFC had words with the league and this evening's match hasn't been cash coshed by the governing body, so hopes are high that the stands are heaving come 6pm. But could the reduction in crowd numbers from last year's phenomenal count be as simple as second year syndrome? Auckland casual sports fans are notorious for their flaky attendance record and the team, although flirting all season with top spot, hardly provided consistent top results. The hardcore fans turned up, but the casual fan is where the growth will always be and this area I'd suggest has been lacking. Like a cute new puppy at Christmas that everyone wants to cuddle, a year down the track, after some chewed slippers and a couple of accidents on the carpet, the interest wanes somewhat. Not hessian sack style, but close.... See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A bad memory is fuelling Auckland FC in their bid for a maiden A-League football final. They host Adelaide United at Mt Smart in the first leg of their semifinal tonight – the stage where they stumbled last campaign. It's kicking off at 6pm, and Auckland's right back Callan Elliot joined D'Arcy to preview the clash. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Auckland FC are into the A-League semi-finals for the second season in a row and want to learn from the disappointment of last May. This Saturday Auckland host the first leg of the home and away series against Adelaide United and are determined to make it to the Grand Final for the first time. Sports reporter Felicity Reid spoke to Melissa Chan-Green.
Knock-out football has arrived. Auckland FC is going head-to-head with Melbourne City tonight in a must-win match – the winner moving on to the A-League semi-finals. There's weight on the shoulders of Guillermo May, Auckland FC's all-time leading goal scorer, with Sam Cosgrove and Jesse Randall's involvement questionable, as they're both suffering from injuries. May told Piney since it's an elimination final, they have to be a lot braver in their play. “Melbourne City's been in the last, maybe ten games, they've been in a really, really food run, so we have to be on our best to win the game.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It was a rough run home for Auckland FC as they ended the regular A-League season with a five-game winless streak. As a result, Adelaide United jumped them to land in second place, relegating the Black Knights to an elimination final against reigning champions, Melbourne City. Auckland FC midfielder and club MVP Louis Verstraete joined D'Arcy to preview this must-win match. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Auckland FC's playoff fate has been sealed. The side is looking to avoid second-season syndrome after a record-breaking entry into the A-League. It comes down to a do-or-die elimination final against reigning champions Melbourne City, kicking off Saturday at Mt Smart Stadium. CEO Nick Becker told Mike Hosking they have good form against the Australian team, but he doesn't want to jinx anything. He says it's been a tougher season than the last, but these sorts of things build resilience within a side, and the players are in the right mindset. A bitter disappointment for Auckland FC, as their performance against the Central Coast Mariners last weekend ruled them out of the Premiers Plate race. But the Plate isn't the be all end all, and a victory in tomorrow night's game would lock them into second place and let them skip straight to the semifinals. Dan Hall, defender for Auckland FC, joined D'Arcy to discuss. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A milestone moment for Auckland FC as they host Macarthur this afternoon, bringing up their 50th match in football's A-League. Defender Francis de Vries has been there every for game since the team's entry to the competition at the start of last season. He says it's a privilege to be part of the Black Knights squad. De Vris told Piney the team's consistency can be attributed to the way they break things down week by week and look at what each person needs to do individually and what the team needs to do as a whole. “If you can consistently do that and then have quality as we do within the squad, then it's a great recipe for success.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
