Lisa Brandt's career in radio and voiceover is a testament to the power of versatility, resilience, and a willingness to embrace change. From her early days in small-town radio to her time at some of Toronto's most iconic stations, Brandt's story is one of navigating the evolving landscape of the industry with determination. One of the most striking aspects of Lisa's journey is her ability to keep it young. Whether it was cueing records and producing commercials in the analog era, or pivoting to voice work when her radio career took an unexpected turn, Brandt has consistently demonstrated a knack for reinventing herself. Her openness to trying new things, from blogging to painting, has allowed her to maintain a creative spark and avoid the stagnation that can sometimes plague long-term media professionals.Lisa's emphasis on the importance of community and support is also noteworthy. Her experiences working with talented programmers and personalities like Marty Forbes, Pat Holiday, and Erin Davis have underscored the value of surrounding oneself with like-minded individuals who can provide guidance, encouragement, and a sounding board. Perhaps most significantly, her approach to managing the constant influx of news and information is a lesson in self-care of her mental health. She is selective in her news consumption and to prioritize her own well-being over obsessing over current events is a refreshing perspective in an era where anxiety and burnout are all too common.Lisa has an excellent podcast with Erin Davis (who was on our show earlier this year), called Gracefully and Frankly. Today, we cross a name off every radio aficionado's interview bucket list: Erin Davis. Erin hosted radio in Toronto for more than 30 years, from the 80's all the way to 2016. Most of that time was spent at the venerable CHFI. There's a lot to talk about when it comes to Erin's career, and she's happy to share. Stories of personal and career growth, and how she developed her hosting skills. The mistakes she made along the way. The co-hosts she had the best and worst chemistry with, what she found so special about radio, the decline she's seen since the turn of the century, and of course, the devastating change that prompted her to leave radio behind.Since 2016, Erin has expanded her resume in a number of ways. Most notable, though, are her book Mourning Has Broken, and her two podcasts- Drift with Erin Davis and the G and F Podcast. G and F is co-hosted by Erin and her longtime friend and fellow voice talent, Lisa Brandt. Drift, on the other hand, is a show meant to help you drift off peacefully to sleep. To get in touch with Erin, learn more about her, or read her weekly blog posts, check out her website here.We also spoke extensively about Valerie Geller's book Beyond Powerful Radio which you can find here. in paper format and on Audible. My next guest is a Canadian music and broadcast industry Hall of Famer, an author, a podcaster, and someone who woke up Toronto for THIRTY years of her life on the CHFI Morning show. Erin. Friggin. Davis. The beautiful thing about Erin Davis is her name floats through so many generations, broadcasting and otherwise. My Mom and Dad know her name. My colleagues know her name. Future broadcasters know her name. When Erin Davis was faced with mourning the loss of her daughter Lauren in 2015 in a very public way, Toronto mourned with her. Broadcasting colleagues across the country mourned with her. She bravely shared what her family was going through on and off the air. At a certain point, broadcasting took a back seat and it was time to move across the country and find peace. Erin now resides near Victoria, BC with her long-suffering husband Rob (or so she jokes). It's from there that she hosts the podcast Real Time for the Canadian Real Estate Association, a second podcast for and about seniors called Elder Wisdom: Stories from the Green Bench, and her (literal) dream project: Drift with Erin Davis, sleep stories gently told that currently rank in the top 1.5% of podcast downloads worldwide. You'll hear her speak about all of these projects during this episode. Erin loves to write and shoot weekly video blogs at erindavis.com, keeps an annoyingly active social media presence, does freelance voice work and – most rewardingly – enjoys emceeing as well as sharing her keynote message of hope after tragedy based on her Globe & Mail bestselling memoir Mourning Has Broken: Love, Loss and Reclaiming Joy, published by HarperCollins Canada. She sleeps a lot more now, and highly recommends it...wait, are these wise words? Although I never had a conversation with her before this recording (it was actually recorded before she was a guest on the Jann Arden podcast I've been co-hosting earlier this fall), I found her SO easy to speak to and so very inspiring. She also happens to be best friends with Lisa Brandt who is another FANTASTIC guest I've had the pleasure to speak with and if you get them in a room or even e-mail thread together, you won't be able to stop laughing. Lisa Brandt is a former broadcaster-turned-voiceover artist with thirty-five years of experience. While you will hear us talk about her career in Toronto and London studios, the good times and bad, the ‘playtime' on the mic and her days in management, we had to talk about the storied career of another broadcaster who was recently ousted from her position anchoring a national newscast…someone only a year younger than her. The recent news surrounding Lisa LaFlamme has not only struck a chord with broadcasters and women in media but Canadians everywhere. Viewers. The audience. Before you listen to this episode, please know and understand that there's an ongoing investigation, and I don't know any more detail than you do…On Linked In, Bell Media President and CEO Mirko Bibic shared the following statement: Since Bell Media's decision to end her contract, there has been heavy criticism. The narrative has been that Lisa's age, gender or grey hair played into the decision. I am satisfied that this is not the case and wanted to make sure you heard it from me. While I would like to say more on the Bell Media decision, we are bound by a mutual separation agreement negotiated with Lisa, which we will continue to honour. To address concerns raised regarding the working environment in the newsroom, we have begun an independent review involving confidential interviews with all newsroom employees who choose to participate. Any necessary changes that become evident will be implemented swiftly to ensure a respectful, unified workplace. I also want to address the situation of our Vice President of National News, Michael Melling, who has been the subject of various allegations. Michael is on leave effective immediately, pending the outcome of the workplace review that is proceeding. I couldn't think of a better person to sort of unpack all of this with than someone who's got 35 years of broadcasting experience, contemplated going grey in the spotlight, and a woman who is only a year older than Lisa LaFlamme. You can click HERE to read more. Lisa's radio highlights include co-anchoring the 680 News Toronto morning show and being part of the launch of two rock stations. Along the way, she interviewed the very famous, and the not-so-famous and wrote a book about the inner workings of media and how to get on the air. Make The Media Want You is one of her 5 books, so far. Lisa is now a full-time voice-over artist, content creator, and works from home where she's supervised by a senior cat named Cuddles. I looked all over her website for a photo of the boss and was disappointed to see Cuddles stays behind the scenes. Find more about Lisa and her work here: https://www.voiceoflisabrandt.com/ Lisa mentions the late Christine Crosbie in this episode and we wanted to leave a little more information here for you in her memory. She passed away in 2019 after losing a battle with cancer; you can read more about HERE. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It's been seven months since Poland introduced a near total ban on abortions, including cases where there are severe foetal defects. The procedure is now only allowed in cases of rape, incest or when the pregnancy threatens the mother's life. Al Jazeera checks in with women whom are struggling with the emotional toll of the ban. Lisa Brandt is the bestselling author of five books (soon to be six!), former morning show co-anchor at Toronto’s 680 News Radio, and versatile voice artist. She is also a Sepsis survivor and is a recent spokesperson for The Global Sepsis Alliance. Lisa shares why she chose to leave 680 News at the peak of her radio career, why she left the concrete jungle for country living, and how she beat sepsis.
Can you step out of your own story long enough to see yourself from an outside perspective? Are you able to honestly and objectively consider yourself and your activities from someone else’s viewpoint, and then ask and answer the question: Why would they care? This week, we’re joined by Lisa Brandt, who describes herself on her website as "An experienced author, reliable writer-for-hire, long-time broadcaster and versatile voice-artist." At the time of this recording, she has just released her latest book, “Make the Media Want You.” It's her fifth turn as an author, with some of her other more recent books including “My Sepsis Story” and “The Naked Truth.” Lisa is presently the morning show co-anchor at News Talks 1290 CJBK radio in London, Ontario, the most recent stop in a distinguished broadcasting and journalism career (she tells much more of the story of her background when she joined me a couple of years ago, in Episode 6: "Balancing Multiple Creative Passions”). I've read “Make the Media Want You” and I loved it. Its principles truly speak to the challenges that come up in the work I do with small businesses, non-profit organizations and community groups, particularly as it relates to marketing and communication. While this episode is very much a conversation, Lisa's part of it is loaded with valuable insight on what to do, and what not to do,if you are looking to reach out to members of the media in hopes of securing more exposure for whatever it is that you're working on. Just a sample of some of the areas where Brandt suggests people often misstep include: Making it easy for the person you're asking to help you. The basic courtesy of getting names correct. Being aware of your own "industry jargon." Thinking things through from the listener, viewer or reader's perspective. Having an interesting story to share as opposed to just more "dates and locations" to toss on the pile. If you're looking to connect with members of the media or just do a better job of effectively communicating in general, there are all kinds of key tidbits and takeaways in this discussion that will help you!
eCareDiary will speak to Lisa Brandt. author of "My Sepsis Story" about how sepsis differs from the flu and her journey from misdiagnosis to healing.
