Most of us inherited a God no kinder than we were—a deity whose major role seemed meting out tough penalties for willful or impetuous mistakes. Like primitive believers everywhere, we read His displeasure in thunderstorms, bruised knees, and lost puppies—for was there anything for which we weren't somehow to blame? So it is that finding grace is the great unlearning of our past, the sweet and joyful discovery that in Jesus, our sins aren't being counted against us. What we sang in innocence was actually, fundamentally true: “Jesus loves me”—genuinely loves me. He can't imagine a greater happiness than enjoying my trust and affection. How glorious to have been wrong about it all—to celebrate the truth that undermines our youthful foolishness and fear. His perfect love still casts out fear, and makes us wise unto salvation. By grace, our thinking—and our living—is renewed. So stay in grace. -Bill KNott

Inside Bipolar

Do you feel trapped in a therapy or psychiatry relationship that feels stagnant, unsettling, or just plain wrong? This episode pulls no punches as hosts Gabe Howard — who lives with bipolar disorder — and Dr. Nicole Washington — a board certified psychiatrist — tackle the uncomfortable question most people think about but rarely voice: “How, and when, is it time to part ways with your mental health professional?" This direct and practical conversation cuts through the guilt, the logistics, and the myths about “ghosting” therapists, psychiatrists, and counselors. Dr. Nicole explains when walking away is OK, when to be careful (especially with meds), and why honest communication can actually be beneficial to you as the patient. Gabe brings the patient perspective — what it feels like to doubt care, to fear being “difficult,” and some tips to tell if the problem is the professional, your stage in recovery, or just a bad fit. Takeaways You don't have to explain, but honest conversation is usually the healthier choice. Plan transitions first: “Ghosting” can create dangerous gaps in your care. Ask for records and time your switch to minimize treatment disruption. If you've ever wondered whether you owe the professional an explanation, how to keep medication continuity, or what to ask on day one to avoid a mismatch later — this episode is for you. Expect blunt truth and step-by-step strategies to move on responsibly so your recovery doesn't skip a beat. Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning podcast host, author, and sought-after suicide prevention and mental health speaker, but he wouldn't be any of those things today if he hadn't been committed to a psychiatric hospital in 2003.Gabe also hosts Healthline's Inside Mental Health podcast has appeared in numerous publications, including Bipolar magazine, WebMD, Newsweek, and the Stanford Online Medical Journal. He has appeared on all four major TV networks, ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX. Among his many awards, he is the recipient of Mental Health America's Norman Guitry Award, received two Webby Honoree acknowledgements, and received an official resolution from the Governor of Ohio naming him an “Everyday Hero.” Gabe wrote the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are available directly from the author with free swag included! To learn more about Gabe, or to book him for your next event, please visit his website, gabehoward.com. Our host, Dr. Nicole Washington, is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she attended Southern University and A&M College. After receiving her BS degree, she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to enroll in the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a residency in psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa. Since completing her residency training, Dr. Nicole has spent most of her career caring for and being an advocate for those who are not typically consumers of mental health services, namely underserved communities, those with severe mental health conditions, and high performing professionals. Through her private practice, podcast, speaking, and writing, she seeks to provide education to decrease the stigma associated with psychiatric conditions. Find out more at DrNicolePsych.com. After some wholesome IRL bonding time in the studio and NYC, Jordana and Dr. Naomi are back in their natural habitat — the virtual recording setup — and they're breaking down every last chaotic detail of the recent family vacay. The Overshare comes from a Betch spiraling about all the different group chats in her phone, and the hosts discuss the ever increasing communication trend. A write in seeks a Betchicist on how to handle a co-workers seemingly innocuous lie that left her feeling gaslit. Dr. Naomi gets real and emotional with an intention for a listener dealing with the devastating loss of her dog and the duo gets deep about the soul-crushing grief (and soul-healing love) that comes with losing a furry BFF. Jordana rates a triggered scenario that left an employee footing the tax bill after her company “gifted” her some premium swag, uhm what? And Dr. Naomi drops some serious validation for a Betch whose sister asked if she could name her baby… after her very recent ex-boyfriend. We wish we were kidding. “A teacher can never put in a method what he does not have in himself.” -Emerson White This is part 2 of this pair of talks from Jonas Sauder on orienting teachers to their work. Jonas speaks from a deep and passionate vision for education that has sustained and guided him over the past decades. It's inspiring to hear him cast vision for teaching from a place of fullness and freshness. In the first episode, Jonas laid out some basic concepts for teachers in forming healthy expectations for their work and their place in the community. In this episode, he delves into the need for and fundamentals of classroom management. Jonas is keen to emphasize that you don't manage a classroom primarily by how you plan but through who you are. Especially for new teachers, that may feel daunting. Maybe even like a bit of a dead end. I hope you'll find some language for how to communicate about both the more concrete and abstract components of effective classroom management. Infused in this talk is a core understanding of children as persons, not pawns. Classroom management is about creating an orderly, nourishing environment for little humans not designing and maintaining some kind of machine. Jonas closes with a few cautionary ideas on how to lose control of your classroom. As you press into this new school year, may God give you grace to lead your team with clarity and joy.     Links This recording was first published on The Dock as "Teacher Orientation: Managing the Classroom:" https://thedockforlearning.org/lecture/teacher-orientation-managing-the-classroom-jonas-sauder/  More recordings from Teacher's Week 2008: https://thedockforlearning.org/series/teachers-week-2008/  The First Days of School (book): https://christianlearning.org/product/first-days-school/

Have you ever had someone say, “I'm definitely going to hire you... I just need help with one more thing first”? You help them. You offer your expertise. And then... silence. In this episode of The Sales Maven Show, Nikki Rausch breaks down how to spot the difference between a legitimate lead and a time-wasting distraction, and how to handle those people who always have just one more thing they want from you (for free). Nikki opens up about her own experiences with repeat freebie seekers, people who continually reach out under the guise of becoming paying clients, only to ghost after getting what they need. She explains why it's not only okay but necessary to protect your time and expertise, even when the ask seems small or comes from someone you know. These moments can feel manipulative, and Nikki reminds listeners that being kind doesn't mean being a doormat. This episode is full of practical advice and ready-to-use phrases for when someone says, “Can I just pick your brain real quick?” or “As soon as I get through this thing, I'll be ready to move forward. Can you help me in the meantime?” Instead of giving away your time in hopes of a future sale, Nikki encourages you to confidently respond with options like: ➡️ “I'd love to support you. Would you like to book a paid session?” ➡️ “That's exactly the kind of thing we cover in my strategy sessions. Would you like the link to book?” She also explores the internal tug-of-war many entrepreneurs face: the desire to be generous and helpful vs. the reality of running a business. Nikki makes it clear that when people pay for your services, they're not just investing in you. They're investing in themselves. And that shift in mindset is often what creates real transformation. Whether you've dealt with this once or a dozen times, this episode will give you permission to stop overgiving, honor your boundaries, and stay focused on serving your paying clients at the highest level. You'll walk away with the confidence to recognize when “just one more thing” is a red flag and how to respond without guilt or hesitation. Need help crafting language that sets firm but kind boundaries? Nikki offers one-on-one support to help you navigate these tricky conversations. In this episode, I'm talking to the ladies about how to move gracefully as a woman. This ain't a metaphor we're talking real, physical movement and presence, just like we did for the men in the masculine movement episode. A man's movement sends a message, and so does a woman's. So today, we're getting into how women can embody that same kind of grace and power in their own way. Let's talk about how you carry yourself and what it says without you even speaking. "Saint Olga, renowned for her wisdom and sobriety, in her youth became the wife of Igor, Great Prince of Kiev, who ruled during the tenth century. After her husband's death, she herself ruled capably, and was finally moved to accept the Faith of Christ. She travelled to Constantinople to receive Holy Baptism. The Emperor, seeing her outward beauty and inward greatness, asked her to marry him. She said she could not do this before she was baptized; she furthermore asked him to be her Godfather at the font, which he agreed to do. After she was baptized (receiving the name of Helen), the Emperor repeated his proposal of marriage. She answered that now he was her father, through Holy Baptism, and that not even among the heathen was it heard of a man marrying his daughter. Gracefully accepting to be outwitted by her, he sent her back to her land with priests and sacred texts and holy icons. Although her son Svyatoslav remained a pagan, she planted the seed of faith in her grandson Vladimir (see July 15). She reposed in peace in 969." (Great Horologion)

Liz Cobo says that nothing has deepened her faith and changed her walk with Jesus like studying the Bible. Studying God's Word literally changed her life. Things that were once important priorities aren't anymore. Things that were once afterthoughts are now at the top of her list.  Scripture is God's self-revelation and is available to anyone willing to take the time and make the effort to read and study. Liz understands that now. God promises in his Word that he will give us greater understanding of His Word when we read it.  Liz always believed in God, but didn't always know Jesus and lived a lot of her life not knowing what the Bible says and doesn't say. Maybe you've experienced (or are experiencing) the same thing? We know what it means to be an unbeliever or to be unchurched. But what about believers who don't know God's word? She describes them as soldiers who take no weapons or no armor into war.  Liz wants women to become educated believers and shares practical ways to learn. Her passion is to help them understand, study and apply the word of God in their daily lives. And to share God's truth with grace to unbelievers and the unBibled. We talk about all of this and more in this episode. Here's Liz' story...
