Nicole Johnson has a lot of Motorsports experience and she's got an excellent YouTube channel called Nicole Johnson's detour. You probably have seen one of the videos her most popular is a 500 horse powered Subaru sleeper Bug. That video, her first one has over 10 million views. Since then she's built a Youtube channel where she seeks out unique cars to feature on her show, her motto is "I wanna drive everything". Last week (if you subscribed her channel parentheses which you should), you would've seen Zorba the Ghia featured on Nicole Johnson's Detour. My 1964 type 34 Karmann Ghia. This week we talked to Nicole and get all of her history. She actually raced 1600cc cars at one time. We talk about the process it takes to film the videos the way she looks for cars and trying to build a unique channel on YouTube. Lots of cool talk and if you're interested automotive shows this is a great one to listen to. Nicole also is known for her racing monster trucks for monster jam. She was a driver for the Scooby Doo monster truck. With a long history and rock, crawling, and offloading how she got selected to do that was pretty awesome. Go subscribe to her YouTube channel today it's worth it. A Maryland woman will likely spend decades behind bars for the brutal deaths of her 7-year-old niece and 5-year-old nephew, whose decomposing bodies were discovered in the trunk of her car during a 2021 traffic stop. On Monday, a Baltimore County judge ordered 36-year-old Nicole M. Johnson to serve a life sentence in a state correctional facility, with all but 50 years suspended, after her conviction on two counts of child abuse resulting in death of a child under 13. The victims, identified as 7-year-old Joshlyn Johnson and 5-year-old Larry O'Neal, were found during a late-night traffic stop on July 28, 2021. Baltimore County Police officers with the Essex precinct pulled over Johnson's vehicle near Eastern Boulevard and Wagners Lane in the Back River area. According to court records, Johnson's car was uninsured, unregistered, and equipped with a fake license plate, prompting officers to tow the vehicle. Before the car could be removed, Johnson's alarming statements—“It don't matter, I won't be here in five days” and “ya'll going to see me on the news making my big debut”—led police to investigate further. Officers noticed the smell of decomposition as Johnson removed belongings from her trunk. When they asked to see inside a suitcase Johnson attempted to conceal, they found the body of Joshlyn. They then discovered Larry's remains in a separate plastic tote. Authorities said both children were severely underweight, with Joshlyn weighing only 18 pounds and Larry weighing 21 pounds at the time of their deaths. During her interview with police, Johnson admitted to striking Joshlyn in May 2020 at a motel after she suspected the child had been stealing. She said the child collapsed and remained unresponsive, prompting her to place Joshlyn's body in a suitcase and store it in the trunk for several months. Johnson claimed that Larry died in his sleep about two months before her arrest. The children's mother, Dachelle Johnson, wrote online that she had been trying to regain custody of her children from her sister when Johnson “just disappeared.” She explained that she initially allowed Johnson to watch Joshlyn and Larry because she was unable to care for them at the time. A prearranged exchange never took place; Dachelle only learned of the children's fate after police contacted her about their deaths. “It was supposed to just be a family helping family situation,” Dachelle wrote on a since-deleted fundraising page. “I trusted her… I'll never get to see my kids because of a mistake I made in trusting my sister. I wish I could take it back, but I can't.” Per the court's orders, should Nicole Johnson ever be released, she will be required to serve five years of supervised probation, complete mental health treatment, and have no contact with anyone under the age of 18. Content warning: This episode contains conversations on self-harm. In this episode of the Vets First Podcast, Levi Sowers is joined by guest-turned-cohost, Louis Kolling. If you're interested in learning more about Louis Kolling's story, listen to Season 4: Episode 2 to hear about his journey from army veteran to molecular biophysicist. Now join the two as they speak with Jennifer Van Tiem and Nicole Johnson who dive into their qualitative research on how to discuss suicide with veterans. Nicole is a senior quantitative research specialist at the VA with the Office of Rural Health with a PhD in health communication from Indiana University. Jen Van Tiem is a PhD in applied anthropology from Columbia University and a principal investigator on a project aimed at providing practitioners with better tools for communicating with veterans.Together, the pair explain how tools like theirs are designed to bridge the gap in communicating with veterans and specifically in regards to approaching the conversation of suicide. While no one tool can have all of the answers or say the perfect thing, their “conversation tool” guides practitioners towards desirable outcomes during difficult conversations. There is also a focus on the rise of qualitative research and how it is used in a research setting to add context to the statistics of quantitative research. Despite the differences in their research practices, every one agrees that each form of research can be used to provide background, inform, and further the other. Finally Louis speaks to his experiences speaking with other veterans about mental health and the difficulty in broaching that subject with health care providers out of fear. Louis focuses on a veteran's fear of being labeled and forced into an unknown processes that may further strip them of their rights. The focus shifts to how dispelling the myths and stigma around mental health hospitalization could improve outcomes in these conversations.

Plus, we drop a tantalizing teaser about an upcoming episode with Nicole Johnson, a former monster truck driver and YouTube sensation - keep following the show for updates. Our guest today, James, is one of those people we admire as he turned a hobby into a full time career that he loves and is able to bring joy to others as a result of his passion. But first, James takes us down memory lane with stories of his first few cars including a two-tone blue 1977 Caprice Classic gifted from his grandfather, a vehicle full of character and quirks. You'll hear about its uncanny resemblance to an undercover police car which benefitted James more than once, the persistent stalling issues, and the adventure of installing a Pioneer stereo system. Passing the 1977 Caprice to his brother enabled James to purchase his next car, a "new to him" gold with vinyl top 1985 Oldsmobile Toronado Caliente, considered quite the luxury car in its day. His next car was near and dear to his heart, a "John Deere green" 1976 Triumph Spitfire, enabling him to be part of a car club and relying more on his mechanical skills - likely an early catalyst for his current line of work.Today, James splits his daily driving between a white 1999 Porsche 911 cabriolet and a 2017 white Honda CRV to ferry him to/from his auto restoration shop where he shares his passion as he delves deep into some of the intricacies of classic car restoration. His shop, McCrea Enterprises LLC in Easton, Maryland, where he performs extensive work involved in a complete restoration of a vintage gems like a 1953 MGTD he is restoring for a repeat customer to give to his wife as a surprise. What does it mean to evaluate or reconsider one's identity? For some, the concept has never been in question. For others, what identity means can be more complex. On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman chats with Nicole Johnson, educator at Doane Academy in New Jersey. Nicole details her experience of growing up in a biracial family and why she identifies as a Black woman. Nicole shares how she grew up in the 80s and 90s in a Black neighborhood, attending predominately white schools, and how she never had a Black teacher throughout her early education. She explores instances of codeswitching with family and friends while trying to find herself. Nicole then shares her experience as a high school student touring a Historically Black University, what went into her decision to not attend one and her reflections on that choice years later as an adult. The episode concludes with Nicole discussing how, as a teacher, she is preparing students for their next level of education and a future that looks quite different from the one she faced at their age. Dimensions of Diversity is a podcast created by Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, highlighting diversity in the workplace.
