When Bell Media announced a little more than one year ago that it was divesting 45 of its radio properties, some people were uncomfortable positioning the move as a positive shift for the industry, but family-owned and operated Whiteoaks Communications Group - which is acquiring four of the stations - is already presenting strong evidence that is the case.Whiteoaks, which is acquiring CKLH-FM Hamilton and CHRE-FM, CHTZ-FM and CKTB St. Catharines, is on a major hiring push in advance of the take over.On this episode of Broadcast Dialogue - The Podcast, we speak with Whiteoaks President Matt Caine, a third generation broadcaster, Station Manager Hollie Taylor, and Bell Media Regional PD Lisa Vinc, who will join Whiteoaks as part of the transition, to talk about the handover, radio's much maligned viability, the future of the AM band, and more.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In case there was any doubt that Sunday's Super Bowl LIX will be a really big deal among the betting populace, a Responsible Gambling Council-commissioned survey shows more Ontarians will place a wager on the Eagles-Chiefs tilt than last year's NFL championship game. Also this week, the American Gaming Association announced an estimated $1.39 billion in wagers will be taken by legal sportsbooks across the U.S. of A. on the game. Those wagers will be a blend of moneylines, over-unders, player props and those novelty wagers around the coin toss, national anthem, Kendrick Lamar's halftime gala, Taylor-Travis and more. Among the operators preparing the smorgasbord of betting options is Ontario licensee FanDuel, so we welcomed back to the Gaming News Canada Show presented by GBG the operator's Director of Content Activation and Brand, Alannah Della Vedova, and Vice President of Marketing Tom Burdakin. Host Steve McAllister asked Della Vedova and Burdakin not only about the Super Bowl – including its latest Kick of Destiny campaign featuring the brothers Manning, and its plans around its Bell Media partnership for Sunday's game – but some other topics including: - The continued appetite by Ontario customers for online casino and other games in the province's regulated gambling marketplace, and FanDuel's response; - FanDuel's investment in women's sports, including the partnership it announced in December with the Professional Women's Hockey League; - The recent announcement by ESPN that the Worldwide Leader was launching a responsible gambling campaign featuring anchor Elle Duncan, and the potential for TSN and Sportsnet to follow suit;- FanDuel's efforts around responsible gambling, including the launch of its My Spend customer dashboard at the end of last year. Dan Dunleavy, is currently the play by play voice for the Buffalo Sabres on MSG Western New York and WGR 550 radio in Buffalo. From 2016 until 2022, Dunleavy rotated with Hall of Fame announcer Rick Jeanneret, who was to retire after the 2016–17 season. Rick changed his mind about retiring despite the agreement he and the Sabres signed with Dunleavy, leaving Dunleavy to work on a year by year time table with the hope of eventually taking over as was offered by the NHL franchise. To partially compensate, Dunleavy's role was also expanded to include filling in as studio host for Brian Duff when not substituting for Jeanneret. Dan was about to call his third season of Toronto Maple Leaf radio play by play on The FAN590 and TSN1050 in the 2013-14 NHL season, when Buffalo approached him about taking over for Jeanneret. Dunleavy accepted, mainly because of his concerns about being split between the two Toronto stations, each owned by two of Canada's biggest multimedia conglomerates (Bell Media and Rogers Communications), both of whom also held ownership stakes in the Leafs.] The Sabres signed Dunleavy to a five-year contract that expires in 2018; Dunleavy has turned down other offers during his time with Buffalo and remains in negotiations for a contract extension. On May 9, 2021, unsure of whether or not he would return to the Sabres, he posted a potential farewell message in the event that he did not renew his contract. The Sabres publicly stated that they were interested in renewing Dunleavy's agreement. Since the last update, Dan has renewed once again as the voice of the Buffalo Sabres indefinitely. From December 2004 through January 2011, Dan called the World Junior Hockey Championships on The FAN Radio Network, alongside Jack Miller. That run included five straight gold medal wins for Canada, two gold medal wins for the United States and one gold medal win for Russia. In 2008, Dunleavy called the World Hockey Championships on the Fan Radio Network, working alongside former NHL'er Mark Osborne. The tournament was held between Halifax and Quebec City. Russia won gold, while Canada was the runner up. In 2010, Dunleavy called his first NHL game for the Buffalo Sabres who were playing in Anaheim, substituting for the vacationing Rick Jeanneret; Dunleavy called his first NHL TV game for The Sabres on MSG TV in Ottawa in January 2011 and becoming a permanent rotating announcer in 2013. In 2010, Dunleavy called his first Olympic hockey games, including the men's bronze medal game and the women's gold medal game at Canada Hockey Place (GM Place) in Vancouver. Dunleavy was the host for every Team Canada game on the FAN radio Network. Dan has also called Canadian Hockey League, American Hockey League, and National Lacrosse League games on Rogers Sportsnet. Dunleavy was the radio play by play voice for the Toronto Rock from 2000 to 2008. In 2009 Dan also served as their public address announcer during their home games. #dandunleavy #buffalosabres #playbyplayannouncer #chrispomay #livewithcdp #barrycullenchevrolet #wellingtonbrewery https://beacons.ai/chrisdpomay https://www.cameo.com/chrispomay Want to create live streams like this? What does it take to produce three feature documentaries, a feature comedy, and have two more in the works? Producer Leslie Bland shares the “special sauce” that's made his production companies Orca Cove Media and Less Bland Productions so successful. There's plenty to learn as he tells host Joyce Kline why filmmaking pulled him away from a successful career in live professional theatre, how he made cross-cultural connections through his collaboration with Cowichan filmmaker Harold Joe, and how, in a competitive world, sticking with original IP can lead to success.LESLIE BLAND's film and TV work has been featured on Bell Media, Discovery Networks, Amazon, Super Channel, Knowledge Network, FNX, Télé Quebec, Hollywood Suite, APTN, and streamers and broadcasters in New Zealand, France, China, Australia and around the world. His award-winning, feature length documentary Gone South: How Canada Invented Hollywood featured interviews with celebrities Howie Mandel, Neve Campbell, David Foster, David Shore, Shannon Tweed and the late Alex Trebek. Bio: Actor and storyteller Husein Madhavji, has taken on diverse roles throughout his career most notably playing Dr. Shahir Hamza for 5 seasons in the hospital drama Saving Hope, on stage starring in the Soulpepper production of Yasmina Reza's 'Art' in Toronto, and the world premiere of Tarragon Theatre's acclaimed play “Behind The Moon”. He was also in the Emmy award winning seasons of Schitt's Creek and Daniel Tiger. He can be currently be seen in the Netflix film Donkeyhead, the Disney+ animated series Mira, Royal Detective and on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on Paramount+, and on Bell Media's lighthearted drama “The Spencer Sisters”. As a writer his short film “The Time Traveller” that he developed with director RT, won best short film at the Canadian Film Fest and a received a best foreign film nomination at the San Francisco Black Film Festival. And Husein's pilots “Desi Family” and “Huse Right” both placed at the Launchpad Screenwriting Competition in the US. Prior to his acting career, Husein was a TV presenter where he hosted a daily national entertainment show in Canada, interviewing some of the most famous and celebrated faces in the world.
Things do not look good for journalism right now. This year, Bell Media, VICE, and the CBC all announced significant layoffs. In the US, there were cuts at the Washington Post, the LA Times, Vox and NPR – to name just a few. A recent study from Northwestern University found that an average of two and a half American newspapers closed down every single week in 2023 (up from two a week the year before). One of the central reasons for this is that the advertising model that has supported journalism for more than a century has collapsed. Simply put, Google and Meta have built a better advertising machine, and they've crippled journalism's business model in the process. It wasn't always obvious this was going to happen. Fifteen or twenty years ago, a lot of publishers were actually making deals with social media companies, thinking they were going to lead to bigger audiences and more clicks. But these turned out to be faustian bargains. The journalism industry took a nosedive, while Google and Meta became two of the most profitable companies in the world. And now we might be doing it all over again with a new wave of tech companies like OpenAI. Over the past several years, OpenAI, operating in a kind of legal grey area, has trained its models on news content it hasn't paid for. While some news outlets, like the New York Times, have chosen to sue OpenAI for copyright infringement, many publishers (including The Atlantic, the Financial Times, and NewsCorp) have elected to sign deals with OpenAI instead.Julia Angwin has been worried about the thorny relationship between big tech and journalism for years. She's written a book about MySpace, documented the rise of big tech, and won a Pulitzer for her tech reporting with the Wall Street Journal. She was also one of the few people warning publishers the first time around that making deals with social media companies maybe wasn't the best idea. Now, she's ringing the alarm again, this time as a New York Times contributing opinion writer and the CEO of a journalism startup called Proof News that is preoccupied with the question of how to get people reliable information in the age of AI.Mentions:“Stealing MySpace: The Battle to Control the Most Popular Website in America,” by Julia Angwin“What They Know” WSJ series by Julia Angwin“The Bad News About the News” by Robert G. One of the first questions I ask people when they make a decision to leave their radio job under the guise of retirements is: "Were you pushed or did you jump?" Unlike the Terry Dimonte "retirement" where he was clearly pushed, Ken Connors is leaving his weekend morning job at CJAD 800am on his own terms. In this episode, you will hear all about Ken's career which started at McGill Radio, continued throughout Ontario, to Ottawa and back to Montreal. Ken spent most of the 90's at CHOM and then he shifted to Standard Broadcasting's CJFM where he remained for 6 years before moving to 940 News, Q92 and then it was back to CJAD where he has been since 2016. A fairly remarkalbe career in North America's most unique radio market. Ken and I spent a little bit of time reminiscing about those days at CHOM, and some of things we learned about the broadcast business. Ken is well liked, a nice guy and was fun to work with on and off the air.A transcript and video of the show is available here. Last week a listener emailed us: "To add fuel to the fire with the Bell layoffs, us Bell MTS employees don't know what will be happening to us." "When Bell bought out MTS, they said they will “invest in the community” but as you'll hear in Episode 18, "the future seems bleak to say the least." Click to donate today- Winnipeg's Public Affairs Watchdog – Funded by You! Part 1- A letter from Unifor's Director for telecom members was sent the day after Bell Media dumped radio and TV employees. There's more layoffs planned across Canada, but in Manitoba, the idea "faces obstacles in targeting specific positions" and Marty Gold tells listeners why. But that's not all... 12:26 Part 2- Once, MTS was a coveted employer and source of pride for Manitobans. But insider details about the downward spiral under Bell's ownership tell a sad tale: - "I like my job, the pay, benefits and pension but things have gotten toxic and rotten to the core after Bell took over." - A 66% decrease in staffing levels, as two flagship sites are half or less full. - "The error rate with the Nordia representatives are so high" that management approaches experienced Bell MTS reps for their own customer service needs directly at work "instead of calling in like a customer." - Buyouts, people quitting "due to the high stress levels/toxic work environment and outsourcing of our jobs" to low-pay companies such as Nordia and Sitel, which is "why you get inferior customer service." - "Moral at work is at all time low, cutting hours for casual part time and regular part time employees to the point where they have to get a second job or quit." - A layoff clause that's the "obstacle" the union mentioned that makes mass buyouts prohibitive, so "if they can't get rid of us, they will make life miserable where we quit." To send in story tips, sponsor podcasts, and contribute support for our expenses by Interac: martygoldlive@gmail.com Our source also took aim at the hypocrisy of Bell BCE's avowed commitment to the community- and their annual PR campaign. "Don't be fooled if this company Bell says “yes we have 1000 Manitoba employees. Ask them this, are then directly employed by Bell or are contractors? I bet they avoid the question." "They wonder what causes mental issues? It's bullshit like this and I find it so ironic that they have this Bell Let's Talk Day. So Bell, let's talk about the bullshit you clowns are doing that is causing mental issues. " The Union local is Unifor Local 7 (https://uniforlocal7.ca/) and has a General Membership meeting set for March 27. TGCTS will continue to report on the situation. 30:42 Part 3- Marty Gold explains that tips like these come to ActionLine.ca and not corporate media for a reason- we can be trusted to stand up for the truth and to get information you need on the record. While the Prime Minister attacks social media platforms that hold him and his subsidized media accountable, we continue to represent the community. Welcome to episode #894 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #894. When you live in a city like Montreal, you often get introduced to people who have both "done the work" and are eager to stay connected. A long while back, I had the pleasure of meeting Professor Karl Moore. And, over the years, we have become friends who often run into one another on the streets of Montreal. With a distinguished position at McGill University's Desautels Faculty of Management and over 25 years as a Fellow at the University of Oxford, Dr. Karl Moore is no stranger to the leadership pulse of today's world. His interaction with CEOs and the new-gen leaders, the millennials and Gen Zs, is not just cursory — it's insightful. Karl's exploration into the world of CEOs started with his Ph.D., leading him to study leadership dynamics and strategic evolution. His McGill MBA course, CEO Insights, has become a unique conduit for 31 CEOs to share wisdom each fall, morphing over eight years into the highly-acclaimed The CEO Series on Bell Media's CJAD radio station. These engaging one-on-one interviews with prominent CEOs find their way into Forbes and Les Affaires, magnifying his reach and insight.
