Wait, wasn't this show about introducing friends to new things in comics? Luckily Chris has never read this one! Will the longtime GL fan pull it? Or will he ring-sling it into the drop pile? Charge your power rings, say a cheesy oath, and strap in for this fun episode! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/noneofmyfriendslikecomics/support
A clear pattern is emerging... You know what I see when I look at who is hiring service design professionals these days? It's product driven tech companies! When you take a closer look it's not that surprising that these companies are looking into service design. They are realizing that they need to take responsibility for a larger part of the user experience. A part which includes many non-digital aspects. Just think of how AirBnB deals with properties, Uber with cars and Amazon with physical goods. But it's not just these tech giants. Examples are all around us. You could say that these tech companies are going through their own analoge transformation. Coming in as a service designer into such an environment is... well, quite an interesting experience with it's own set of challenges. For instance you'll find that your work potentially overlaps a lot with product managers. Next to that you're often not tied to operation so it's hard to show tangible impact on customers. And as you start out embedded in the digital part of the company it means you can influence the entire journey. So considering all this it's fair to say that the odds of you being successful are not stacked in your favor. But there's hope. Our guest this week Chris Risdon has made a sport out of establish service design within tech driven companies. And over the past years he learned through trail and error what works and what doesn't. As often is the case the most important lessons boil down to a few simple things... things which are unfortunately easy to forget. Luckily Chris does a great job of reminding us of them. Even if you're currently not in a product driven tech company I'm confident that these lessons will help you be more impactful. I am really excited that my guest today, Major Chris Davis, agreed to be a part of a discussion on Theodore Roosevelt. By day Chris is a Marine Corps officer & lawyer. In his free time though he's an avid reader, which is what connected us. A former president, rancher, Rough Rider, outdoorsman and winner of a Nobel Peace Prize. He even survived being shot while giving a speech. He is almost a myth, almost. Luckily Chris is helping explain how Roosevelt did more than just inherit his manhood.
Things are heating up in Your Neck of the Woods, time is running out in the municipal election campaign and traditionally these campaigns include a debate. The pandemic means this isn't exactly the easiest time to hold such an event though. Luckily Chris from the cross-border interview podcast was able to put on a debate for each of the awards including in Ward 1. Out of what turned out to be nine candidates eight of us participated, in this episode, I sit down and summarize my debate answers without the constraint of a 90 second time limit. We covered topics ranging from economic opportunity, to affordable housing, to green spaces, and road safety. I'll take you through all of these, connect them to previous episodes of the show and discuss the overarching theme of restoring hope to the city we call home. These of been tough times in our neck of the woods and I want to be part of the solution. With the election campaign winding down, win or lose have started thinking about the future of the show and what I would like it to be once the election is over. What I can tell you is more than likely the shows that have characterized this election year will be the first of hopefully many seasons. In the next few episodes, election day will come and go but there will always be more people, events, and issues to discuss in Your Neck of the Woods.
Bill throws a wrench into everything by having the recording done aa day early. Luckily Chris was able to watch the films and Scott pulled together a segment. No joe though and honestly the dude needed a break anyway. Films reviewed this week are Death Smiles on a Murderer and Punk Rock Vacation.
Matt & Chris dish out the nerdy news and geeky gossip. No news is good news, unless you produce a pop culture podcast every week. Chris Gethard is a comedian based out of Queens, NY, with proud roots in West Orange, NJ. He can be seen performing all over the world. In NYC you can often catch him at The Comedy Cellar. He’s the host of the podcast Beautiful/Anonymous, the author of the book Lose Well, and the figurehead of a television show that’s actually more like a religious cult. In hipster cities, he is most often recognized for playing Ilana’s boss on Broad City. In regular America, he more often gets “Aren’t you the guy who tried to hit Oscar with the pipe on The Office?” Back in the late 90s, bands started getting websites. On these websites were forums where people could chat about music, the scene, hot topic, white belts, chain necklaces, etc. It was a place for the scene to exist outside of shows. At that time, a random character names SOMEKID popped up and started talking shit to everyone. I believe this person was my first introduction to trolling. They started shit so much that people in the scene wanted to basically kill this person but no one ever knew who it was. Until today. Luckily Chris remembered this and reached out to me to talk about this. Now, he presented this to me as he had “a story” and you’ll hear my confusion in the very beginning. It takes us a minute to get into why he reached out but holy fuck is it worth it. Usually, I’ll break down what we talk about but it’s a few stories about the scene and then he goes into the story so you need to just hold tight.
