Nina Blom's early years were plagued by mysterious, serious illnesses. Growing up in the Netherlands in the 1970s and 80s, Nina seemed at first to be a typical child, playing with dolls and enjoying singing and dancing. But soon, her mother became convinced that Nina was gravely ill. She kept sending Nina to hospitals for tests and treatments again and again - 16 times in just a few years. And she seemed to enjoy Nina's sickness and pain. Eventually, Nina was made to use a wheelchair and was told by her mother that she had an unstoppable muscle disease. Please be aware that there are descriptions of medical child abuse in this programme.Many medical professionals saw Nina but they could not work out what was wrong with her. It took one keen-eyed doctor to put the puzzling pieces of Nina's life together and figure out the true, dark reason for her illness. Paediatric Condition Falsification is also known by other names, such as 'Fabricated or Induced Illness' or 'Munchausen-by-Proxy'. It is a form of child abuse in which the carer - usually a parent - exaggerates or deliberately causes an illness of a child. The reasons why Paediatric Condition Falsification happens are not fully understood. Nina published her experiences in a book called You are a Horrible Child. Pineapple consistently delivered some of the biggest performances on The Masked Singer South Africa, leaving the Super Detectives guessing about the identity behind the mask. While J’Something, Somizi and Sithelo Shozi all mentioned Brenden Praise’s name at different points, it was Sithelo who ultimately got it right. After performing songs across pop, R&B, EDM and amapiano, Pineapple found himself in the Danger Zone alongside Chopsticks and Gogga. Gogga was saved by the judges, leaving Pineapple and Chopsticks to battle for a place in the semi-final. Pineapple ultimately received the fewest votes and was unmasked. The clues pointed towards Brenden’s music career, faith, upbringing and even his time on Idols South Africa. Other clues included golden trophies, coffee, travelling, a cross and a football boot. The football clue revealed one of the more surprising parts of Brenden’s story: at 13, he attended trials with Kaizer Chiefs but was overlooked after failing to produce his birth certificate. In the end, Sithelo correctly identified the soulful singer, former Idols South Africa runner-up, Grammy nominee, producer and entrepreneur as the man behind the Pineapple mask. THE LEOPARD HAS BEEN UNMASKED! The latest celebrity to be revealed on The Masked Singer South Africa is none other than SAFTA-winning actor Tumisho Masha! The detectives were all over the place, with guesses ranging from Sjava and S’dumo Mtshali to Sizwe Dhlomo and DJ Sabby. The roughly 2,640-kilometre line drawn in 1893 by Mortimer Durand and Amir Abdur Rahman Khan, which today divides Pashtun communities between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Sahak's central argument is that the historical purpose of the Durand Line has never been settled: was it a temporary sphere-of-influence arrangement, a frontier meant to manage dissent, or a genuine international border? The book contends that answering this question by using long-neglected Afghan-language sources alongside the familiar British colonial record. Anchored chronologically in the period from Abdur Rahman Khan's rise to Afghan independence in 1919, with earlier and later chapters extending the frame back to 1761 and forward to 1947, the book draws on original correspondence between the Afghan Amir and British viceroys, the writings of Afghan historians such as Ghubar, Kakar, and Habibi, the accounts of colonial officials like Holdich and Caroe, and a set of original interviews with contemporary Afghan and Pakistani scholars and politicians. What distinguishes the book is its explicit reframing of the dispute as a matter of missing perspective. Sahak argues that decades of scholarship on the Durand Line have been built almost entirely on British and Pakistani positions, leaving the Afghan and Pashtun view including the lived experience of communities split by the line is largely absent from the international debate. Writing partly from personal history as someone who grew up in Kabul during the Soviet occupation and civil war, Sahak situates the technical and diplomatic history of the boundary within its human cost. The author treats the line not only as a nineteenth-century colonial artefact but as an unresolved question still shaping Afghanistan-Pakistan relations, Pashtun identity, and regional security today. Qaseem Ahmadzai holds a master's degree in intellectual history from Södertörn University, Sweden. Anchored chronologically in the period from Abdur Rahman Khan's rise to Afghan independence in 1919, with earlier and later chapters extending the frame back to 1761 and forward to 1947, the book draws on original correspondence between the Afghan Amir and British viceroys, the writings of Afghan historians such as Ghubar, Kakar, and Habibi, the accounts of colonial officials like Holdich and Caroe, and a set of original interviews with contemporary Afghan and Pakistani scholars and politicians. What distinguishes the book is its explicit reframing of the dispute as a matter of missing perspective. Sahak argues that decades of scholarship on the Durand Line have been built almost entirely on British and Pakistani positions, leaving the Afghan and Pashtun view including the lived experience of communities split by the line is largely absent from the international debate. Writing partly from personal history as someone who grew up in Kabul during the Soviet occupation and civil war, Sahak situates the technical and diplomatic history of the boundary within its human cost. The author treats the line not only as a nineteenth-century colonial artefact but as an unresolved question still shaping Afghanistan-Pakistan relations, Pashtun identity, and regional security today. His research focuses on postcolonial theory, historiography, and non-Western intellectual traditions, with particular attention to Afghanistan and the broader Pashto-Persephone worlds. In 2020, Emily Mendenhall drove from Washington, DC to Okoboji, Iowa, a town of 800 that swells to 200,000 every summer, and walked into a pandemic that looked nothing like the one dominating national headlines. Inside gas stations and bars, masks marked you as an outsider. In one stop, a man told her family they would not be served if they kept theirs on. Her 6 year old daughter cried, confused. Mendenhall, a medical anthropologist at Georgetown University, did what she always does. She started asking questions. Over months, she interviewed neighbors, former classmates, and local officials, including her own brother in law who helped lead the local COVID response. The result became Unmasked, a case study in how community identity, economics, and politics shaped public health decisions in real time. That work led directly into her latest book, Invisible Illness: A History, from Hysteria to Long COVID, where she tracks a much older problem. Patients with chronic illness, especially women, often fail to meet medicine's demand for proof. Without a clear diagnosis, they lose access to care, insurance coverage, and legitimacy. Mendenhall argues that long COVID did not create this failure. It exposed it.This conversation centers on how healthcare systems reward certainty and punish complexity. Long COVID clinics send patients to 17 specialists without resolution. Insurance structures require diagnoses that many conditions cannot provide. Medical training still struggles to integrate trauma, mental health, and chronic disease into a coherent model of care.Mendenhall brings lived experience into the conversation. After COVID, she dealt with months of fatigue and escalating anxiety that altered her baseline health. She does not claim the label of long COVID, but she understands how quickly the system becomes harder to navigate once symptoms stop fitting clean categories. The stakes are not theoretical. In the United States, access to healthcare, disability benefits, and treatment still depends on whether a condition can be measured, coded, and reimbursed.
