Somewhere between the inception of magazines being the only bit of Australian bowhunting content and the creation of myspace, there was a time when online forums reigned supreme. And the guest on today's episode Mr Luke Griffin, is the man behind the wildly popular forum: The Bowhunters Group Of Australia. Luke shares som incredible yarns from while he was running the forum and explains some of the great journey's it took him on. And while the forums are back up and running (once again because of Luke) despite being switched off for a few years… They're not his main focus in the hunting realm anymore. In this week's episode, I spoke to Tomi Bolton Schmid, who has experienced the deaths of her brother Jason Bolton and her son Luke Griffin. In 1991, while walking home from a party, it's been reported that Jason was accidentally struck by a vehicle and died from his injuries. Jason's family believes he was murdered. Twenty five years after Jason's questionable death, Tomi's son Luke was found dead on his property. It's been ruled he committed suicide. Tomi, however, is on the fence about her son's death being ruled a suicide. She believes there could be something more sinister about Luke's death. Before he died, he had received threats. Do you know what happened to Jason or Luke? As the summer comes to an end across the city, it’s the start of a new season here at Bushwick Podcast. That means we have the continued privilege of sharing more of the remarkable stories happening in the community, and the renewed duty to help break down the biggest issues facing the neighborhood today. We have some exciting episodes planned this Fall, and we’re thrilled to begin the season with a story of resilience, hope, and the power of partnership. This week, we sat down with some of the leaders behind the Bushwick Food Co-op, which, if you haven’t listened to our previous episode, “The Everyone Store,” is the neighborhood’s democratically owned and operated grocer. Earlier this summer, the Coop’s storefront was devastated by fire damage, but today, they’re recovering by embracing the unique strengths of their community. AFTER THE EPISODE We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Chris, Laurel, Kat, Ali, and Fran for taking time out of their recovery efforts to share some of the lessons of their experience. If you’re interested in learning more about the Co-op and how you can help out with their fire recovery efforts, you can visit their website (https://bushwickfoodcoop.org), follow them on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/bushwickfood/), or visit their GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/f/rebuild-bushwick-food-cooperative) to support them directly. We’d of course, also like to thank you so much for joining us this week. We’ll be back with another story you won’t want to miss, but in the meantime, we’d love to know what you’re interested in hearing, and how we can do better. Get in touch by emailing us at hello@hearbushwick.com, or by DM’ing us on our instagram (https://www.instagram.com/bushwickfood/). We can’t wait to hear from you, and we’ll see you soon. We’re hard at work getting the new season of Bushwick Podcast ready to be the best one yet, and we can’t wait for you to hear what we’ve got in store. In the meantime, we wanted to share an update on one of our most popular stories from earlier this year: “The Everyone Store.” AFTER THE EPISODE: Our sincere thanks again to our friends at the Bushwick Food Co-op for sitting down earlier this year for the original “The Everyone Store” episode. "It’s our season finale, and we’re thrilled to close out a summer of Bushwick stories by partnering with our friends at the new community media project, This Bushwick Life. Together, we sat down with an artist whose work captured Bushwick at one of its most defining moments: the early 80s. In that time, she lived many lives, from disco club kid to Bushwick public school teacher, but through it all, she was one thing more than any other: a photographer. This week, we’re stepping into Bushwick’s Past with an intimate conversation with one of the community’s longtime chroniclers: Meryl Meisler. AFTER THE EPISODE: We’d like to extend our gratitude to Meryl, who was incredibly gracious and generous with her time, for joining us in the studio to share her memories, and her work, from Disco Era Bushwick. You can find out more at her website (http://www.merylmeisler.com) and her Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/merylmeisler/). We’d also like to thank our friends at the new community media project, This Bushwick Life, for making this episode possible. This Bushwick Life was created in July of 2018 to promote the Bushwick residents, local businesses, and community organizations that make the neighborhood a better place to live, work, and visit. Their mission is to create awareness, make introductions, and strengthen ties between people in the community. No story is too small, and nobody is too cool. If you want to learn more, or you’ve got something to share, you can visit them at their website (https://www.thisbushwicklife.com), check out their Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/thisbushwicklife/), or get in touch directly at info@thisbushwicklifelife.com. We’d of course, also like to thank you so much for joining us this week, and throughout this season. None of this would be possible without your support. We’ll be taking a brief break before returning this Fall, with more of Bushwick’s incredible stories. But in the meantime, we’d love to know what you’re interested in hearing, and how we can do better. Get in touch by emailing us at hello@hearbushwick.com, or by DM’ing us on our instagram (https://www.instagram.com/bushwickpodcast/). We can’t wait to hear from you, and we’ll see you soon." We’ve heard in previous episodes about how Bushwick has become one of Brooklyn’s most dynamic communities for everything from food to art. Take a walk around the neighborhood, and you’re sure to notice another scene that’s thriving here: thrift stores and vintage shops. But that’s not without some complicated feelings, as some people see the increasingly hip secondhand industry as a herald of gentrification. This week, we sit down with one of the owners behind Bushwick’s newest vintage shop to discuss: What makes a secondhand store tick, and what role can it play in Bushwick’s future? AFTER THE EPISODE: We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Cat and her partners in MCM for taking us behind the scenes of the vintage world, and sharing more about their early work here in the community. To learn more, follow Brooklyn Vintage Company on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/brooklynvintagecompany/), or visit them for yourself at 194 Irving Ave. Of course, we’d also like to thank you for tuning in. We’ll be back next week with our final episode of the season, an exciting collaboration with our friends at the new Bushwick blog, This Bushwick Life (https://www.thisbushwicklife.com). You won’t want to miss it. In the meantime, did you know Bushwick Podcast is made by people like you? We'd love your feedback, and your help. This week, we finish our two-part run on Vietnamese restaurants in the neighborhood by sitting down with Falansai’s Henry Trieu, one of Bushwick’s most thoughtful business owners, to better understand: As the neighborhood and its culinary scene change in unpredictable ways, what’s top of mind for a restaurateur here? AFTER THE EPISODE: We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Henry and the team at Falansai for taking us behind the scenes of the restaurant, and for sharing such a candid perspective on the future of business in Bushwick. To learn more, follow Falansai on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/falansai/), check out their website (https://www.falansai.com), or visit them for yourself at 112 Harrison Pl. As we’ve heard in previous episodes, Bushwick is one of Brooklyn’s rising culinary epicenters. One of the things that makes the scene here so dynamic is that Bushwick’s restaurants don’t just serve good food—they reflect the culinary and artistic identities of visionary chefs with roots that range from right here in the city, to communities around the world. This week, we’re kicking off a two-part run about Vietnamese restaurants in Bushwick by sitting down with the chef behind one of the neighborhood’s most fiercely original restaurants: Bunker. AFTER THE EPISODE: We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Jimmy and the Bunker team for taking some time out of a hectic prep schedule to take us behind the scenes of the restaurant. To learn more, follow Bunker on Instagram, check out their website, or visit them for yourself at 99 Scott Ave. Of course, we’d also like to thank you for tuning in (and for bearing with Luke as he fumbled everything from Vietnamese to French this episode). "Spend enough time around Bushwick’s artists, activists, and entrepreneurs, and you’ll start to hear the same name over and over again: Mayday Space. This week, we visit Mayday, Bushwick’s home for social movements, to learn more about one of the neighborhood’s most vital resources for everyone from local elected officials, to activist groups, to amateur wrestlers. Earlier this month, Bushwick hosted one of the neighborhood’s largest annual events: a daylong celebration of street art, food, and music called the Bushwick Block Party. Of the thousands of visitors that attended this year, most were there simply to enjoy the sights, bites, and sounds. But some were there to send a message. This week, we meet Mi Casa No Es Su Casa, a guerilla art project that turned this year’s Block Party into the stage of one of their biggest demonstrations yet. AFTER THE EPISODE: Our thanks to Mi Casa No Es Su Casa for sharing more about their activism in the community. June is Pride Month, which means that people around the world are gathering to honor the LGBTQ community with parades, parties, and celebrations of all kinds. Bushwick is home to one of New York’s most dynamic LGBTQ scenes and this month has some surprises in store, like the latest showcase from the neighborhood's very own queer, feminist theater company, Sacred Circle Theatre. This week, we’re going behind the scenes of Sacred Circle to learn more about how they’re reimagining theater to build a space where everyone belongs. We’re back! To start our fourth season, we're celebrating HRN’s 10th birthday with a very special episode about HRN's home, Brooklyn. Not only is it the birthplace of food radio, but it's also home to some buzzy neighborhood pollinators and the urban farmers who care for them. We have an interview with Eric Adams, Brooklyn's Borough President, who shares his transformative health journey. Our neighborhood of Bushwick has changed a lot over the past decade, from its culinary renaissance to the complicated implications of gentrification, and we take a look at how businesses have shaped – and continue to shape – our community. Finally, we have a look towards 2020, as we consider how challenging, yet crucial, the census count will be in Bushwick.
