What happens when your deep longing to love and be loved gets tangled up with your need to be needed? In this week's episode of Typology, Anthony and I sit down with the wonderful Emily Zeller—a licensed marriage and family therapist, certified Enneagram practitioner, and a one-to-one Enneagram Two. Emily brings such honesty and heart as we talk about desire, boundaries, and the tender places in all of us that crave connection. As we explore the unique energy of the Enneagram Two and unpack the three subtypes—self-preservation, social, and one-to-one—we ask questions we can all sit with: When have you confused being loved with being needed in your own relationships? What would it look like to offer love without trying to earn it in return? If you've ever wrestled with seeking validation, struggled to set boundaries, or simply wanted to understand yourself or a loved one better, you're going to feel right at home in this conversation. This episode isn't just for Twos—it's for anyone longing to grow in self-awareness and bring more compassion and balance to their relationships.

On today's Midrats, we have returning guest Craig Whiteside and his co-author Ian C. Rice joining us to discuss one of the nightmares we all have in the new book coming out this month. He co-authored it with Ian Rice, Non-state Special Operations: Capabilities and Effects. From the abstract:Building on previous research on Islamic State special operations, the book develops a theoretical framework surrounding a typology of VNSA (militants, proxies, criminal/cults, and mercenaries) to explore variations of non-state special operations, with multiple cases for each category of actor. Understanding when and why VNSA use special operations provides insights into the inner workings of such groups and how they campaign, and also has implications for the proliferation of special operation forces around the globe and its influence on non-state behaviour. This volume contributes to research on the recent trend of non-state actors surprising, and in some cases humiliating, their state opponents.Craig is Professor of National Security Affairs at the US Naval War College resident program at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. He is the co-author of The ISIS Reader: Milestone Texts of the Islamic State Movement (2020). He has a PhD in Political Science from Washington State University and is a former U.S. Army infantry officer. His coauthor Ian is an adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Defense Analysis, Naval Postgraduate School, adjunct faculty member with the College of Distance Education, USMC University, and a guest lecturer with the Royal Danish Defence College. Margaret opened up about facing surgery just before her book launch, navigating the exhaustion that comes with being “on” all the time, and how her joy had to be redefined in the midst of cancer. We also explored how ADHD traits can show up in Enneagram Sevens, what it's like being married to a Type 5, and how learning to rest isn't easy when you live in a world that never slows down. Margaret also offered a fresh perspective on the Holy Spirit—not just in the New Testament, but throughout Scripture. It's a conversation about joy that makes room for sorrow, faith that's been through the fire, and a Spirit who meets us in the mess. As you listen, take a moment to consider: What does true rest look like for you? Has your understanding of the Holy Spirit grown or shifted over time? Can you recall a time when joy and suffering existed side by side in your story?

Melvyn Bragg and guests explore typology, a method of biblical interpretation that aims to meaningfully link people, places, and events in the Hebrew Bible, what Christians call the Old Testament, with the coming of Christ in the New Testament. Old Testament figures like Moses, Jonah, and King David were regarded by Christians as being ‘types' or symbols of Jesus. This way of thinking became hugely popular in medieval Europe, Renaissance England and Victorian Britain, as Christians sought to make sense of their Jewish inheritance - sometimes rejecting that inheritance with antisemitic fervour. It was a way of seeing human history as part of a divine plan, with ancient events prefiguring more modern ones, and it influenced debates about the relationship between metaphor and reality in the bible, in literature, and in art. It also influenced attitudes towards reality, time and history. Does the New Testament fulfill the Old? Typological patterns in Scripture are featured as real phenomena involving persons and events that correspond and anticipate future fulfillment in similar, yet different persons and events. Typology describes a certain approach to reading the Bible based on a doctrine of theological types employing the study of, analysis, or classification based on categories. A Typologist studies how the New Testament foreshadows the Old, holding that things in Christian belief and Gospels are prefigured or symbolized by things in the Old Testament, in a sense, created to serve as prefigured shapes of what Christ would do. What if the Bible's story didn't start in Genesis, but in eternity past? Discover the eternal covenant between Father and Son that shapes all of Scripture and salvation history. In this episode of Remnant Radio, Joshua Lewis sits down with Dr. Ryan McGraw, professor of systematic theology at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, to unpack the powerful doctrine of Covenant Theology. But this isn't just about ancient agreements—it's about the eternal plan of salvation crafted before time began. Dr. McGraw lays out the “covenant of redemption,” the intra-Trinitarian agreement between the Father and the Son to redeem a people through the perfect obedience and atoning death of Christ. This covenant provides the foundation for everything that unfolds in redemptive history—from Adam's failure under the covenant of works, to the unfolding covenant of grace that culminates in Christ and continues through the Church.Together, they trace the storyline of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation, showing how the theme of covenant brings coherence and clarity to God's dealings with His people. You'll hear how the law reveals not just commands, but the very character of God; how the gospel is embedded even in the earliest pages of the Old Testament; and how the biblical distinction between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent runs throughout all redemptive history. Whether you're new to covenant theology or looking to deepen your theological roots, this episode will help you see that the Bible is not a disjointed anthology—but a breathtaking, unified narrative of God's eternal purpose in Christ. ABOUT THE GUEST:

Title: Fixing the Broken Pieces with Ian Morgan Cron  Description: Everyone is an addict. Mr. Rogers…The Dali Lama… Michelle Obama! Mull that idea over for a minute and when you're done being outraged like we were, join us for this enthralling conversation with one of our favorite repeat guests on For the Love – author, psychotherapist, and Episcopal priest, Ian Morgan Cron. Today, we're talking to him about his new book, The Fix: How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down-and-Out, and Everyone In Between. People pleasing, the need to be right, being a compulsive helper, workaholism, being a knowledge junkie, perfectionism, holding on to our past suffering – these are all forms of addiction. The simple truth is, we each resort to our own methods of dealing with the harder aspects of life. For some, that solution means turning to a substance to numb our pain, which is how we traditionally think of addiction. For others, there are behaviors we employ to manipulate what we are feeling. And that's where the rest of us fall into the sticky trap. Ian, who also hosts the wildly popular Typology podcast exploring the mystery of the human personality, teaches us how the Twelve Steps are a trusted tool for anyone seeking to move beyond self-help to a more profound sense of awakening.  And, in a new segment called “To My Younger Self”, Jen and Amy share some deeply personal experiences that, for Amy, helped change her relationships and, for Jen, helped change how she viewed herself.   Thought-provoking Quotes: “People don't have one addiction; people are poly-addicted. They're seething cauldrons of addiction.” – Ian Morgan Cron “All human beings have a natural and innate hunger for union with the divine. The problem is when we go in search of counterfeit experiences of the divine that lead to disappointment, disillusionment and disaster.” – Ian Morgan Cron “Most Twelve Steps meetings happen in church or synagogue basements, after hours. And I wondered, does anyone upstairs know about the miracles that are going on downstairs? And why can't we release what's happening down here so that people up there can take advantage of it?” – Ian Morgan Cron “When you can admit powerlessness, it's a relief that it's not on you anymore.” – Ian Morgan Cron “When you frame an addiction as a solution to a problem, albeit an inadequate one, what follows is compassion, not judgment or condemnation.” – Ian Morgan Cron Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Five Calls app – https://5calls.org/ I Poop on Fascists Sticker - https://bit.ly/4gWiFHx The Fix: How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down-and-Out, and Everyone In Between by Ian Morgan Cron - https://amzn.to/3Xgx6PK The Fix Workbook: How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down-and-Out, and Everyone in Between by Ian Morgan Cron - https://amzn.to/3DiTReV How to Mitigate Stress Based on Your Personality – FREE DOWNLOAD - https://typologyinstitute.com/stress  The Typology Institute Enneagram Assessment by Ian Morgan Cron - https://typologyinstitute.com/assessment Typology Podcast - https://www.typologypodcast.com/ The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery by Ian Morgan Cron - https://amzn.to/3QCG1qI Guest's Links: Ian's website - https://ianmorgancron.com/ Ian's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ianmorgancron Ian's Twitter - https://x.com/ianmorgancron Ian's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/IanMorganCron/ Ian's Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@imcron Ian's Podcast - https://www.typologypodcast.com/ Connect with Jen!
