Feeling alone in your microschool journey? Whether you're just starting or several years in, building a microschool community can feel overwhelming—but it doesn't have to stay that way. In this episode of the Teacher Let Your Light Shine Podcast, I'm sharing how I went from homeschooling a few students in my living room to leading a thriving microschool with a fully engaged Parent Advisory Council and a strong waitlist. You'll learn: How to involve parents even when you're small What to do in Year 1 to plant seeds of connection How to grow word-of-mouth marketing organically The difference between asking for help and building advocates How to structure sustainable community systems (without burnout) Whether you're dreaming, launching, or expanding, you'll walk away with clear action steps, encouragement, and a reminder: you don't have to build your school alone.
You didn't start your microschool to become a marketing expert… But without students, your vision can't grow.
Can you really start a microschool in a rural town, homeschool your own kids, and grow an online business—all at the same time? Let me introduce you to Becky McNichols, a former public school teacher from a small town in rural Kansas. After stepping away from the traditional classroom to homeschool her two children, Becky didn't stop there. She transformed her basement into a learning hub—what would become the start of her thriving microschool. Today, Becky not only runs a growing homeschool hybrid, but she also operates a successful Teachers Pay Teachers store, combining her love of teaching with entrepreneurship. In this inspiring episode, Becky opens up about: Leaving the public school system and embracing homeschool life Teaching from her home in a rural Kansas community Starting her microschool in her basement with no blueprint Finding confidence and clarity through the Microschool Marketing Blueprint Growing her student base, creating curriculum, and balancing it all with family life Becky is proof that you don't need a big city, a big budget, or a big building to start. You just need the courage to begin, the willingness to learn, and the heart to serve. If you're feeling stuck in a small town… if you're unsure where the students will come from… or if you're balancing homeschooling and dreaming of more—this episode is your sign to keep going.

If you've ever thought: “I know I'm called to this work… but why aren't families enrolling?”—you are not alone. In today's powerful episode, I'm introducing you to Lori Rubel, a former teacher and now the successful founder of Bloom Beautiful Academy, a growing microschool and homeschool hybrid in Florida. Lori didn't start with a marketing degree. She started with a calling—and her living room. Like so many of us, Lori left the traditional classroom with a dream to build a safe, joyful, and personalized space for students—but struggled with one major hurdle: How do I find families? She joined our Microschool Marketing Blueprint course during those uncertain early days, and today, she shares what happened next: how the course helped her build clarity, consistency, and confidence—and how she grew Bloom Beautiful into a place where students and parents feel seen, supported, and empowered.

You'll learn why waiting for clarity delays your growth, and what you can do today to begin building your microschool's visibility—even if you feel overwhelmed, underprepared, or unsure. Let's take the next step together.

Are you a teacher, homeschool hybrid leader, or microschool founder who feels overwhelmed by marketing your school? You're not alone—and you don't need to become a full-time marketer to attract the right families. In this episode, we're diving deep into the real, raw struggles of building a microschool from the ground up—juggling curriculum, enrollment, communication, and finances—while trying to find students who actually belong in your program. Makenzie shares the exact struggles she faced in Years 1–3 of launching her microschool—from having no enrollment system, no marketing consistency, and no follow-up strategy—to finally unlocking the systems that grew her school from 6 to 12, then 18 students in her living room… to 50… and now over 100 projected. If you've ever thought: “I'm not a salesperson.” “Marketing feels awkward.” “I just want to help kids and make a difference.” Then the Microschool Marketing Blueprint was made for you. This step-by-step course is packed with the foundational systems every microschool or homeschool hybrid needs to enroll students with confidence—and implement real growth strategies in as little as 3–6 weeks. Whether you're in Year 1 or stabilizing in Year 3, this is the marketing mentorship you've been praying for.

Let's talk about money—but not in a scary or overwhelming way. In this episode of the Teacher Let Your Light Shine podcast, I'm taking you behind the scenes of how I went from financially winging it (and praying the numbers would work) to building a microschool with clear, sustainable financial systems. If you're a microschool founder, homeschool hybrid leader, or teacher dreaming of starting your own school—this episode is your financial reset. This is Part 2 of our Summer of Clarity series, and we're diving deep into: What my financial systems used to look like in Years 1–2 (hint: disorganized, reactive, and stressful) The exact tools and habits that changed everything—like weekly finance check-ins, monthly forecasting, tuition dashboards, and hiring a bookkeeper How creating financial clarity gave me the freedom to grow, hire, rest, and lead with confidence What I'm focusing on this summer (and what you should be looking at too): compensation structure, tuition tiering, forecasting for a second location, and more
Shine your light has nothing to do with robbing others of their own glow! Never dim your light to make others comfortable!

If you're in the early stages of starting a microschool or homeschool hybrid, thinking about leaving the classroom, or just trying to breathe through the overwhelm of leading something meaningful… this message is for you. Inside this episode, I share: Why your first steps—however messy—are the most sacred What to do when fear, comparison, or uncertainty shows up The power of God's faithfulness when your own strength feels like it's running out Practical encouragement if you're just getting started or feeling stuck How to recognize small wins and let them build your belief You'll walk away with: Permission to slow down and reflect A simple action—write a letter to your past or future self Ideas to start your “faith and favor” folder (something that changed my mindset) And most importantly… a reminder that you are not behind. How to Build Trust and Connection with Parents and Students Are you welcoming new families into your microschool… but not sure what to say after they enroll?
If You're you a teacher, homeschooler, or microschool founder trying to wrap your head around the financial side of running a school? You're not alone—and you don't have to stay stuck or overwhelmed. In this episode of the Teacher Let Your Light Shine podcast, host Makenzie Oliver breaks down the financial must-knows for educators building or growing a microschool. Whether you're just launching or scaling your learning community, Makenzie walks you through:
Be Bold & Let Your Light Shine!2 Timothy 1:5-6 “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”I was listening to some praise and worship songs this morning and I was looking for one song in particular because I just love it. I couldn't remember the name but I remembered which playlist it was on, so I searched through and found it. It is called Start a Fire, and it is by Unspoken. I love this song so much because I feel like it speaks to my soul. I feel it expresses how I feel so deeply. I love many praise and worship songs for this reason. I find the artist's ability to capture how I feel about God and put it into words is remarkable. This is why I love listening to Christian music so much. I will hear a song and find myself nodding my head and saying, yes, that is exactly it. Sometimes, I didn't even know that was how I felt; I just couldn't put words to it, but as soon as I heard them, I knew it was true. I want to share the words of this song with you:This world can be cold and bitterFeels like we're in the dead of winterWaiting on something betterBut am I really gonna hide forever?Over and over againI hear Your voice in my headLet Your light shine; let Your light shine for all to seeStart a fire in my soulFan the flame and make it growSo there's no doubt or denyingLet it burn so brightlyThat everyone around can seeThat it's You, that it's You that we needStart a fire in meYou only need a spark to start a whole blazeIt only takes a little faithLet it start right here in this citySo these old walls will never be the sameOver and over againI hear Your voice in my headThey need to knowI need to goSpirit won't You fall on my heart nowYou are the fire; You are the flameYou are the light on the darkest dayWe have the hope; we bear Your nameWe carry the news that You have come to saveOnly You can save There are so many things I love about this song. I love the part where it says over and over again I hear your voice in my head, let your light shine, let your light shine for all to see. I feel God is telling all of this. He wants us to let our light shine. It even says in the Bible, don't hide your light under a bushel. Put it on the table for all to see. I love the part where it says, am I really going to hide forever? As if we can hide from God. He sees us, He sees all of us, and guess what? He loves us just as we are. I love the part where it says, “Start a fire in my soul. Fan the flames and make it grow, so there's no doubt or denying. Let it burn so brightly that everyone around you can see that it's you, that it's you that we need.” This is what God wants from us. He wants His light to shine so brightly in us that everyone can see it. He wants us to be a reflection of Him and to pass His light on to others. This is my prayer for each one of you listening. I pray God starts a fire in your soul. Actually, I pray He fans the flames on the fire He has already started. You would not be listening to this podcast if there wasn't already a fire in your soul. I also love the part that says, “You are the fire, You are the flame, You are the light on the darkest day.” This is so true. I hope you know that. I hope you know that God is that fire you feel inside, He is the flame. God is the light on the darkest day. Your darkest day, that one where you felt alone, that one where you feel sad, mad, angry, or depressed. God is there, and He is your light. He will light a way where you didn't think there was one. The verse above starts by saying, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.” I met with some of the ladies in my prayer group yesterday to review what we had learned at a recently attended conference. During the conversation, we started talking about the faith that was passed down to us from our parents, who received it from their parents. Your faith came from somewhere, and I think we underestimate how important it is that our parents passed our faith down to us. Maybe some of you listening didn't have that. Maybe you found your faith on your own. Well, maybe God led you to your faith in another way. That is great if you were able to find your faith despite the lack of faith in your childhood. For those of you who grew up going to church, I would like you to take a minute to appreciate how great that is. Maybe you didn't appreciate it at the time because, let's be honest, most kids don't enjoy the fact that their parents made them go to church. However, if you look back now, can you see what a gift that was? Can you see how your parents were giving you a firm foundation on which you can rely for the rest of your lives? I really don't know if I would have made it through I made it through if I didn't have my faith, if I didn't have God right there with me. I don't know if I would have had the strength to keep fighting, to keep searching for answers, to keep trying. Our family of origin, the family we grew up with, has a large impact on who we become. Sometimes we can get caught up in seeing all the negative things that came from our family. Maybe today, we could take a moment to think about all the good things that came from our family. Maybe we can think about what a gift it is that our parents passed down the faith to us. We can think back to how many other generations have kept the faith alive in our family so that we could have the foundation we have today. If you didn't have that firm foundation, if you had to find it on your own, maybe think about how important it is to pass that along to the next generation so that they aren't lost, and so they don't have to find God on their own. What a gift that would be. The verse above ends with, "For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.” It reminds us that God is a Gift. Not everyone knows God, not everyone has received this gift. This verse is telling us to fan the flame of that gift. Fan the flame of the fire inside of us. As the song says, “Fan the flame and make it grow, so there's no doubt or denying. Let it burn so brightly that everyone around can see that it's You, that it's You that we need.” What if your love for God burned so brightly that there was no way to deny it? What if it burned so brightly that it spread like wildfire to all those you meet? Have you ever been with someone who had an infectious laugh? They are filled with so much joy, and when you are around them, you can't help but laugh too. What if we were like that with the Holy Spirit? We were so filled with the Holy Spirit that when others were around us, they couldn't help but be filled with the Holy Spirit too. What if we made that our goal? What if our goal was to fan the flame of our faith so that it grew so brightly that all could see it? This is my goal, will you join me?Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, we love you, and we want to fan the flame. Will you help us? We want to be so full of your love and goodness that it spills out on all those we meet. We want the fire inside of us to be like a wildfire that spreads to each and every person we come in contact with. We don't want anyone to have to go another day without knowing your love, your mercy, your glory, and your grace. You are so amazing, Lord. We are so grateful for those who came before us and passed on your faith to their loved ones. Please help us to pass on our faith to our loved ones as well. Give us the strength and the willpower we need to do this, Lord. We love you, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name. Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Remember, Jesus loves you, and so do I! Matthew 4:23–25 (CSB) 23 Now Jesus began to go all over Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24 Then the news about him spread throughout Syria. So they brought to him all those who were afflicted, those suffering from various diseases and intense pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralytics. And he healed them. 25 Large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.
