It took a national scandal over a Facebook group called Marines United to force a true reckoning within the Marine Corps about its cultural problems with sexual harassment and misogyny. Four years later, how far has the service -- and the military at large -- come in putting an end to this toxic behavior and creating a safer and more equal place for all troops to serve? Scott Jensen, a former leader of the Marines' Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program, joins Left of Boom to give the military a report card on its progress.

I conducted this interview in 2017 but today in 2020, it's still so relevant. Now that the old podcast is down, I'm publishing again so that the great work being done is not forgotten.Former U.S. Marine Erin Kirk-Cuomo is fully aware of what her sisters in the Marine Corps are going through as they battle Marines United; a group of 30,000+ men who stored and shared thousands of photos of female Marines on Google Drive and Facebook. Some of the photos were taken without permission, some were nude photos shared without permission. In many cases, male Marines encouraged each other to find these women and rape them, even posting their duty stations, full names, addresses and phone numbers.Erin knows because it happened to her. As co-founder of Not in My Marine Corps, she's helping to lobby for federal laws that will make non-consensual photosharing illegal on a federal level, and providing support for victims. But like many before her, she's sometimes fighting an uphill battle not everyone is sure she can win.Listen on iTunesShow Notes:Links: https://www.facebook.com/NotInMyMarineCorps/https://www.notinmymarinecorps.org/Biography: Erin Kirk-Cuomo is a former United States Marine, business owner, activist, co-founder of Not In My Marine Corps, Coast Guard wife, and mother. Iconic civil rights attorney Gloria Allred joins Joanna and Prachi to discuss the shocking Marines United nude photo scandal, in which male military members shared nonconsensual photos of current and former female colleagues online. The initial incident, tied with the persistent reports of sexual assault in the military, has shed new light on a larger culture of sexual harassment in the military that has gone unaddressed for years. They also speak with Miranda Petersen, executive director of military advocacy group Protect Our Defenders.

Join Cheri Roberts TUES. March 21 @ 6pPST/9pEST with Frederick Lane, a leading cybercrime computer forensics expert, to discuss so-called "revenge p0rn" and the reality of "ëlectronic sexual assault." Is it just a Marines United or military phenomenon? No. this is a new culture of crazy and illegality as the country wrestles with legislation and enforcing fledgling laws while countless new victims are assaulted every day. Revenge p0rn image numbers are on the rise, just like the proliferation of child p0rn, online forums, groups and even sites like Dropbox and Google Drive play a major role in this cyber exploitation. We will include a conversation on the Servicemembers Intimate Privacy Protection Act (SIPPA) and social media's role versus our expectations in dealing with this issue.
