Most executives think a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is a lifeline. It's actually a tombstone. They believe if they just work harder, hit the impossible metrics, and play nice, they can turn the ship around. But here's the cold reality: A PIP isn't designed for your improvement. It's a paper trail designed for your termination. It's a paid interview period—and the clock is ticking. Why this matters There is a dangerous gap between what corporate policy says (HR is here to help) and how the game is actually played (HR protects the company). When you are being managed out, your natural instinct is to defend your performance or seek mediation. That instinct is wrong. By the time you spot the signs—nitpicking, the "cold shoulder," or a sudden shift in responsibilities—the decision has likely already been made. If you treat a PIP as a genuine coaching moment, you lose your leverage. If you don't know how to document the "buckets of wrongdoing" and build a counter-narrative, you walk away with damaged confidence and the bare minimum severance. But if you know the playbook, you can turn a forced exit into a negotiated victory. In this episode, we unpack: Why the "Performance Improvement Plan" is almost never about performance. The exact signs that you are being managed out (and why a new manager is the #1 red flag). Why HR is not your friend—and why going to them too early destroys your leverage. The "Buckets of Wrongdoing" framework: How to document toxic behavior to build your case. The "At-Will" employment trap: Why it's a one-way street that benefits the employer. How to negotiate a severance package even when they try to offer you nothing. The mental toll of gaslighting and why validation is the first step to recovery. A real transformation A professional facing a "Me Too" situation involving a CEO, dating back 20 years. She was wrongly terminated and then gaslit for seven months. Her family and friends told her she was crazy, urged her to drop it, and warned she was damaging her reputation. She felt isolated and powerless. She partnered with Dan Goodman to stop playing the victim and start building a case. They refused to accept the silence. They documented the timeline, identified the inconsistencies, and presented a "scathing, reputationally damaging" narrative back to the employer. After months of being ignored, she received a $50,000 offer out of the blue. But more importantly, the gaslighting stopped. The employer acknowledged the liability through their wallet. She moved from feeling "crazy" to being fully vindicated—and the negotiation is still ongoing. Timestamps (0:00) — Intro (2:16) — Why you should never go to HR expecting a solution (5:20) — The PIP reality: It's a paid interview period (8:35) — How to spot when you are being managed out (The "New Leader" Red Flag) (10:24) — The financial motivation behind making you quit (14:40) — How to leverage "Buckets of Wrongdoing" for severance (19:00) — Preparing for the worst: What documents you need to gather now (24:00) — Using HR vs. Being played by HR (29:40) — The "At-Will" employment scam and why it's one-sided (36:30) — The mental health cost of carrying workplace trauma The takeaway Blind loyalty is a career liability. If you are put on a PIP, the company has already broken up with you; they just haven't moved their stuff out yet. Don't internalize the gaslighting. Document the dysfunction. Turn their desire to get rid of you into your capital to walk away paid. This week's episode is a Recast as we review a fundamental conversation between Preston and Coleman Ruiz (MCTI's co-founder and former Director of Performance) on the concept of "Residue"—the psychological and emotional substance left behind after immersion in high-stakes environments. As we approach the end of the year, we are revisiting this episode to help our listeners navigate the transition from one year to the next and to continue or begin a ritual of reflection. Coleman and Preston explore how the "residue" of our experiences is neither good nor bad, but rather a byproduct that must be processed. Without intentional routines, this residue can "harden," inhibiting our ability to move into a new year with clarity. The conversation covers various aspects of professional and personal life, including the impact of extreme experiences, the importance of intentionality and self-compassion, and the value of a 'third thing' to help balance life. This thought-provoking discussion is essential for anyone involved in mission critical fields, as it emphasizes the need for better tools and self-awareness to manage the residue of intense experiences. Whether you are coming off a high-intensity deployment or simply looking to reset after a demanding year, this episode offers a framework to help you leverage your past to build a more resilient self.Find the featured paper on our website: https://missioncti.com/resources/If you value this discussion, the best way to support our work and stay up to date on future episodes is to subscribe and leave us a quick rating or review. Do you believe that to be a badass, you also have to be the "B-word"—that you cannot be effective and liked at the same time? Many leaders chase power, thinking it comes from controlling resources—like holding the "car keys" to get what they want. But power and status are not the same thing; power is what you control, but status is how much you are respected. And in the long run, resources follow respect. Why this matters If your audience doesn't value or respect you, it is nearly impossible to be influential, regardless of your title. Most professionals treat influence as a transaction, only focusing on their network when they need a job or a favor. But human judgments are not random; people instantly categorize you as "friend or foe" based on your warmth and competence. If you aren't intentionally building your "status bank" when you don't need anything, you won't have the leverage when the stakes are high. In this episode, we unpack: The Power vs. Status Split: Why power controls valued resources, while status is respected and valued by others. The "Car Keys" Trap: How holding resources (like budgets or authority) creates temporary influence but fails to build lasting respect. The Podium Coaching Gap: Why women consistently ask different questions about negotiation and promotion than their male counterparts. The Friend or Foe Radar: The two distinct dimensions—Warmth (intent) and Competence (ability)—that our brains use to judge every leader. The "Latte" Rule: Why the absolute best time to build your network is when you are content and simply ordering a coffee. Navigating Hotspots: How to execute tough decisions, like layoffs, with both assertiveness and warmth to protect your professional reputation. Authenticity vs. Strategy: Why being "likable" isn't about faking a personality—it's about strategically demonstrating that you care about others' outcomes. It's the most…won…derful…tiiiiime…of the year! And by that, we mean it's the time of the year when we sit back, look at each other, and ask, "Where did all the time go?!" Forget preparing better answers. The fastest way to stand out in interviews, networking, and executive conversations isn't what you say — it's what you ask. Most professionals rely on generic questions. And then wonder why they're forgettable. In this episode, Brenden Kumarasamy — founder of MasterTalk — breaks down the 100, 200, and 300-level question framework and explains why the quality of your questions is one of the clearest predictors of how you'll perform before you're ever hired. This isn't about sounding impressive. It's about signaling judgment, preparation, and future value. Why this matters Every interview ends the same way: “What questions do you have for me?” Most candidates waste that moment. And that moment is often the only part of the conversation that actually differentiates you. Weak questions don't just stall momentum — they quietly tell decision-makers how you think. In this episode, we unpack: Why 100-level questions instantly put you in the “everyone else” category How 200-level questions create rarity and make people lean in What makes a 300-level question so powerful it changes how you're evaluated Why hiring decisions are made on future contribution, not past experience How great questions act as a proxy for judgment, preparation, and leadership The moment Brenden realized time mattered more than money — and how that shifted his career How to build leverage whether you stay corporate or move into entrepreneurship Timestamps (0:00) – Intro (2:43) — How competitive case competitions became a communication business (6:08) – Why the quality of your questions shapes your career (10:29) – 100-level vs 200-level questions and why most people blend in (13:07) – 300-level questions and how they change how you're evaluated (19:27) – Why questions predict performance better than résumés (21:25) – The moment time became more valuable than money (26:30) – Building leverage whether you stay corporate or leave The real takeaway Your résumé explains where you've been. Your questions forecast who you'll be inside the company. And executives know exactly how to read the difference. Send us a textBefore we close things down for the holidays, I decided to bring back one of my favorite interviews from the vault. In 2021 during one of our Bookkeeping Biz Workshop rounds, I brought Katie on to chat about a program she had just created—which is still going strong today—in fact, has been revamped and redesiged since she created it, and I want to make sure you all know about it. But more so than that, I wanted to bring this conversation back to you in case you're planning for the new year. This will give you some things to consider, especially if you're balancing motherhood with building your business, or dreaming of starting your business in 2026.In this episode you'll hear:Katie's background: CPA → corporate → motherhood → bookkeeping business (and how she was “paid to quit” at the perfect time)The emotional reality of leaving corporate—even when it's the right moveWhy the early seasons of motherhood are intense, and how that shapes business decisionsHow Katie's bookkeeping business grew: referrals, small beginnings, pricing lessons, and early client expansionThe mindset shift: bookkeeping as a stable, scalable foundation (especially once you hire a team)Hiring earlier than feels comfortable: babysitters, cleaners, and bookkeepers as “buying back time”Why working at home with kids around can be harder than being fully out of the houseOffice space + opportunity cost: how one monthly client can fund the setup that changes everythingTraining a team the right way: slow client-by-client handoff, upfront time investment, long-term payoffClient continuity + freedom: not being the only person clients rely onKatie's Become a Bookkeeper (BABS) course overview: Learn → Shadow → Apply (practicum)Resources mentioned in this episode:Become A BookkeeperConnect with Katie: : instagram.com/orderlyaccountingbykatieListen to Katie's Podcast: Profits & ProseccoSign up for Become A BookkeeperThanks for listening. Russ Ewell says, "Fortune smiled on me the day I became a father of a family with disabilities. Human limits became real as I watched my sons fight to overcome Autism and Down Syndrome. Their inspired efforts increased the intensity of purpose shared by my wife and me. We learned to live differently."A significant number of people fear being different. Disability has served to help my family and me overcome this fear. It has clarified what's important and freed us from convention. The struggle has consistently opened our eyes to the discovery necessary to overcome our family's human limits. This has been my personal journey. As a minister, I've applied what I've learned from my family's experience to my spiritual life and process, constantly looking for ways to grow and refusing to settle for tradition or convention. This type of transformative thinking is something I believe a relationship with God should do for everybody.Russ joins Dale on today's podcast to help us understand how to think differently in our leadership when it comes to reaching the next generations. Semantic layers are having something of a moment, but they're not actually new as a concept. Ever since the first database table was designed with cryptic field names that no business user could possibly understand, there's been a need for some form of mapping and translation. Should every company be considering employing a semantic layer? Is the idea of a single, comprehensive semantic layer within an organization a monolithic concept that is doomed to fail? These questions and more get bandied about on this episode, where we were joined by industry legend Cindi Howson, Chief Data & AI Strategy Officer at Thoughtspot. The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
On this episode - a classic ReCast from season 3! - Greg interviews Khun Saba, a disabled rights activist in Bangkok. It's a topic near and dear to the Bangkok Podcast, because we want everyone to enjoy Bangkok, which is very hard to do if you don't have full mobility. Khun Saba explains that he became aware of the difficulty of moving around Thai cities, especially Bangkok, after he became disabled, and notes that while physical and structural issues are important, the key issue is really awareness. Simply put, if people blindly accept all the problems with transportation in Bangkok, then of course they will never be solved. Greg asks Khun Saba about a notorious incident in which he broke a pane of glass when he couldn't use the elevator at Asoke BTS Station. The circumstances were unusual and need to be fully listened to to be understood, but the incident highlights the daily frustration of disabled people in Bangkok. Khun Saba also makes clear that his organization fights for the rights of all Bangkokians to safe and convenient access to transportation in the city and not just the rights of people who are actually physically disabled. He describes his dream of making Bangkok a city of truly international standards where all citizens are equal in terms of their access to the city. We urge you to like the page of Accessibility is Freedom - you'll get some great insight into Bangkok from a whole different point of view. As always, the podcast will continue to be 100% funded by listeners just like you who get some special swag from us. And we'll keep our Facebook, Twitter, and LINE accounts active so you can send us comments, questions, or whatever you want to share.

In this episode, Mark talks with Cynthia Passmore, who is a professor of science education at the University of California, Davis. They talk about the differences between the approach to modeling developed at ASU and UC Davis, which seem to be more and more similar as time goes by. They talk about how all of our understanding in scientific study is based on models, even if we do not specifically hold those up as "models" per se. We use mental models to explain the world around us and to better understand how and why certain interactions happen the way they do. They talk about modeling instruction and the Next Generation Science Standards and how modeling really gets students to do the thinking as scientists and make the connections between what we see and the explanations for what we see. They talk about Cynthia's new book, even get to talk about some of Cynthia's recent research on effective teaching using modeling methods in the high school biology classroom. Guest Cynthia Passmore Cynthia Passmore is currently a Professor specializing in science education in the University of California, Davis School of Education. She did her doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and prior to that she was a high school science teacher. Her research focuses on the role of models and modeling in student learning, curriculum design and teacher professional development. She investigates model-based reasoning in a range of contexts and is particularly interested in understanding how the design of learning environments interacts with students' reasoning practices. She has been the principal investigator of several large grants and is the lead on a collaborative curriculum design project that has created a full-year high school biology course. A key practitioner publication is the edited volume: Helping Students Make Sense of the World Using Next Generation Science and Engineering Practices from NSTA Press. Highlights [2:44] Cynthia "I think the inclusion of modeling as a practice in the next generation Science standards has also brought a lot more people to the work of modeling than used to be the case." [3:25] Cynthia "Models are the functional unit of scientific thought." [7:51] Cynthia "The depiction is important. I'm not trying to say it's not, but if all we're doing is asking kids to reproduce representations and depictions of things, then we're losing the modeling practice, in my view." Before you listen to this episode, can you quantify how useful you expect it to be? That's a prior! And "priors" is a word that gets used a lot in this discussion with Michael Kaminsky as we try to demystify the world of Bayesian statistics. Luckily, you can just listen to the episode once and then update your expectation—no need to simulate listening to the show a few thousand times or crunch any numbers whatsoever. The most important takeaway is that you'll know you've achieved Bayesian clarity when you come to realize that human beings are naturally Bayesian, and the underlying principles behind Bayesian statistics are inherently intuitive. This episode's Measurement Bite from show sponsor Recast is a brief explanation of statistical significance (and why shorthanding it is problematic…and why confidence intervals are generally more practically useful in business than p-values) from Michael Kaminsky! After Alice's passing late last week, we wanted to reshare Qudsiya's conversation with her. Alice Wong was a disabled activist, author and podcaster behind “Disability Visibility,” and the first person Qudsiya reached out to for advice on podcasting. In their conversation, Alice tells Qudsiya what she's learned about the visibility of the disabled experience in media and culture, and her desire to contribute to those narratives by telling her own story. They also discuss the need for more financial support for disabled creatives, as well as better representation in journalism and other media.Visit our website for transcripts.-- Subscribe to Qudsiya's Substack, Getting Down To It Support the team behind the podcast with a donationLet us know what you think with a comment or review onApple podcasts.

This week, we're revisiting a conversation between Preston and Dr. Art Finch, a veteran psychologist from the US Special Operations Command. This episode (previously published in 2020) covers the unique psychological profiles of mission critical teams. Channel a beginner's mind and re-explore why some individuals choose the extraordinary path of high-risk, immersive environments while others opt for more conventional lives. Listen to Art share his experiences and insights from working with special operations units, highlighting the exceptional intelligence, low anxiety, and emotional compartmentalization abilities of operators. Consider the impact of these traits on personal relationships and daily functioning, offering valuable perspectives for both operators and their families, foundational knowledge for the recent Teamcast and accompanying workbook “On Coming Home”. The episode also touches on the challenges of transitioning back to civilian life and the importance of understanding and leveraging one's unique cognitive and emotional strengths. If you find value in this discussion, the best way to support our work and stay up-to-date with future episodes is to subscribe and leave us a quick rating or review. This week we're taking it back to where it all began. While the crew is busy, we're dipping into the archives and replaying the very first episode of HappyCast — the one that sparked the Happy Endings Trail Crew and everything that's grown from it.In this throwback, you'll hear the full origin story: how a chaotic weekend at Rocky Raccoon brought three underprepared runners together, the debut of the infamous beaver costume, the birth of the “weed wobble,” and the moment we realized this community was something special. The audio may be rough around the edges, and honestly… so were we — but the heart of what makes Happy Endings what it is today was already there.Whether you're newer to the podcast or you've been with us since day one, enjoy this trip back to the beginning. We'll be back with a new episode soon — but for now, here's the throwback that started it all.Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. As the world turns, a couple of things happen: 1) we grow and learn, and 2) the world changes. On this episode, inspired by a job interview question, the hosts walked through a range of thoughts and beliefs they had at one time that they no longer have today. Analytics intake forms are good…or bad? Analytics centers of excellence are the sign of a mature organization…or they're just one of many potential options? Privacy concerns are something no one really cares about…or they are something everyone cares deeply about? Voices were raised. Light profanity was employed. Laughter ensued. This episode's Measurement Bite from show sponsor Recast is a brief explanation of statistical significance (and why shorthanding it is problematic…and why confidence intervals are often more practically useful in business than p-values) from Michael Kaminsky. This week, we're sharing the first part of a recast of Chris Thomson's powerful conversation on Paper Napkin Wisdom with host Govindh Jayaraman. In this deeply personal episode, Chris opens up about his cancer journey, from the moment he was told he had a large mass on his liver and bile ducts, through the confusion of a terrifying working diagnosis, to the mindset and gratitude practices that helped him stay grounded. It's an intimate look at courage, leadership, and the choice to live with purpose no matter what life brings. Far more than a medical story, this conversation is about resilience, mindset, and reframing fear into purpose. Chris shares practical lessons on advocacy, communication, receiving support, and choosing the story you tell yourself when life turns upside down.Timestamped Highlights[00:00:00] – Govindh introduces Chris Thomson and their 30-year friendship[00:01:35] – Chris explains why he's sharing his cancer journey and overcoming fear of others' opinions[00:03:40] – “Who am I to tell this story?” — Chris on realizing the importance of sharing hope[00:06:30] – The day everything changed: learning about a grapefruit-sized mass near his liver[00:08:10] – Turning to his network — how relationships became a lifeline[00:09:40] – Hearing the words “cholangiocarcinoma” — a supposed 12-to-18-month death sentence[00:10:10] – The importance of not buying the “working diagnosis” until confirmed by biopsy[00:13:00] – Why doctors give worst-case estimates and what patients should really hear[00:16:00] – Choosing perspective: getting affairs in order and communicating with his team[00:18:20] – “You can tell people you don't know.” — transparent leadership during crisis[00:21:50] – The power of reframing: asking “Why is this happening for me?” instead of to me[00:23:03] – Lessons from Seneca: “We suffer more often in imagination than in reality.”[00:25:35] – A conversation with his son, living the same mindset he teaches others[00:27:34] – Meeting another survivor and finding hope in community[00:30:00] – How giving first in relationships came back as support when he needed it most[00:33:00] – The art of receiving help with gratitude and grace[00:36:00] – “Bring good energy.” — why kindness helps healing[00:37:25] – Mindfulness, meditation, and radical self-care during crisis[00:41:00] – “My job was to be as healthy as possible for the fight of my life.”[00:42:00] – The plot thickens: ongoing uncertainty and inconclusive biopsies[00:44:09] – Closing part 1 — the unknown ahead
Good morning, afternoon, and evening, everyone! The news is buzzing with President Trump's 50-year mortgage idea for housing affordability. While the media churns drama, on The Note Closers Show, we stick to numbers. And the numbers, ladies and gentlemen, never lie.We dug into this mortgage innovation with calculators (and a little AI!). Is a 50-year mortgage a brilliant strategy for real estate investors and first-time homebuyers, or an endless interest trap? Forget media drama; let's talk facts about interest rates, equity growth, and smart real estate investment in today's housing market, especially for Texas real estate. Here's what we uncovered in this episode:50-Year Mortgage: Lower Payments, Broader Access. We dissect payment differences across 15, 30, 40, & 50-year terms. Saving over $266/month on a $386K mortgage (at 6.25%) significantly boosts your debt-to-income ratio, opening homeownership doors to more.Flexibility is King: Strategic Wealth Building. The longer term offers financial flexibility. Use monthly savings (not just for takeout!) to aggressively tackle high-interest debt, invest for higher returns, or build emergency funds. This gives you control, empowering strategic real estate investment choices.Equity Growth: Appreciation Outpaces Interest. Debunking the "too much interest" myth: real estate appreciation is the true wealth builder. A $400K home, appreciating at 4% annually, can hit $526K in 7 years. Your equity grows faster than extra interest, proving property values are key, not fear-mongering.Renting vs. Owning: Build Wealth or "Not Own Sh!t." The rent-vs-buy debate continues. Renting seems cheaper, but 20 years of rent means missing massive home equity and wealth accumulation. Your home is your investment office; don't delay entry while property values soar.Strategic Homeownership: Get In, Grow, Recast. Your first home isn't forever. The strategy: enter an affordable property with a longer mortgage (e.g., in Austin, Texas). As income/market grow, refinance or recast. This leverages average 7-8 year homeowner moves, maximizing market advantage & avoiding mortgage debt pitfalls. This isn't endless payment; it's about getting in the game, building real estate wealth, and navigating life's curveballs. For real estate investors, homeowners, and anyone wanting informed decisions (math, not melodrama!), this episode is for you. Take action, buddy! Presented by Maxxis and Outhouse Coffee Co The 2025/26 FIM World Supercross Championship kicked off last weekend in Buenos Aires City, Argentina, and while we tuned in on the Recast broadcast, our friend Kristen Beat was there working as part of the broadcast team and got to see the action, first-hand. That said, we had Kristen join us on the show this morning to give us her insight and input about all things WSX, then we shifted our attention to last week's Red Bull KTM team launch, and more! Enjoy!

Does size matter? When it comes to datasets, the conventional wisdom seems to be a resounding, "Yes!" But what about small datasets? Small- and mid-sized businesses and nonprofits, especially, often have limited web traffic, small email lists, CRM systems that can comfortably operate under the free tier, and lead and order counts that don't lend themselves to "big data" descriptors. Even large enterprises have scenarios where some datasets easily fit into Google Sheets with limited scrolling required. Should this data be dismissed out of hand, or should it be treated as what it is: potentially useful? Joe Domaleski from Country Fried Creative works with a lot of businesses that are operating in the small data world, and he was so intrigued by the potential of putting data to use on behalf of his clients that he's mid-way through getting a Master's degree in Analytics from Georgia Tech! He wrote a really useful article about the ins and outs of small data, so we brought him on for a discussion on the topic! This episode's Measurement Bite from show sponsor Recast is an explanation of synthetic controls and how they can be used as counterfactuals from Michael Kaminsky! The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
As Thailand starts got back to bid-ness after COVID, there were a whole lot of n00bs coming in to tour, work and live. Most who have been here for a while already remember what an overwhelming experience Bangkok was in the early days, and how helpful it was to make a network of friends that you could turn to for advice. Of course, not all advice is great, especially when you're talking with random people about how your new foreign home works. We think it's fair to say that most advice you get is subjective and can probably be taken with a grain of salt, but some advice…some advice is gold, and should be locked away for further investigation. Greg and Ed take a look back at their early days in the Kingdom and each come up with 2 bits of advice that they got that they did not lock away for further investigation, and now - in their wise old age - regret. From dating to geography, sometimes it pays to listen to old-timers to make the most of your new situation. Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. And we'll keep our Facebook, Twitter, and LINE accounts active so you can send us comments, questions, or whatever you want to share.
Horror movies love sequels and reboots. So, a recast is always around the corner. The Scariest Things is going to do what everybody fears: recasting movies that really shouldn't be rebooted. BUT WE'RE DOING IT ANYWAYS! Redoing A Nightmare on Elm Street with blockbuster casts. Check! A reboot of Jaws with women in the lead? Done! Extending the It story to 27 years, for a Chapter 3 using a senior citizen cast. You betcha! And Hereditary, but swapping out for an all black cast? We can do that! Sacrilege? Absolutely, but you know you want to know who we picked!
Top Stories for October 18th Publish Date: October 18th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, October 18th and Happy Birthday to Chuck Berry I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Sugar Rush takes over Sugar Hill this weekend Glow 5K set for Nov. 9 at Lanier Islands Resort Duluth wins national award for downtown selfie stations All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: KIA MOG STORY 1: Sugar Rush takes over Sugar Hill this weekend Sugar Hill’s biggest bash is back this weekend, and it’s got a little something for everyone—art, music, family chaos (the good kind), and that small-town community vibe you can’t fake. Saturday? Start with the 5K Color Run at 8 a.m. (registration’s at 7, if you’re ambitious). Then, from 10 to 6, downtown transforms into an art-lover’s dream: 100+ vendors, a pumpkin patch, live art demos, and even a biergarten for the grown-ups. Sunday keeps the fun rolling at noon with gold mining, aerial silks, animal shows, and—yes—a mascot dance-off. Because why not? STORY 2: Glow 5K set for Nov. 9 at Lanier Islands Resort Lanier Islands’ Magical Night of Lights is kicking off the holiday season with a festive twist—the Dashing Through the Glow 5K on Sunday, Nov. 9. Picture this: running (or walking, no judgment) through a wonderland of Christmas lights at dusk. Toy soldiers, candy canes, even pickleball-playing elves—it’s all there. The race starts at 5:45 p.m. and is capped at 1,500 participants, so don’t wait. Registration includes a cozy crewneck (or hoodie, if you upgrade), a finisher medal, and Santa bobblehead trophies for top runners. Proceeds? They go to the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. Holiday vibes for a good cause. STORY 3: Duluth wins national award for downtown selfie stations Duluth just snagged some national bragging rights, winning a Silver Circle Award for Graphic Design at the 2025 Savvy Awards. The ceremony? Held Sept. 4 at Planet Hollywood in Vegas—because where else would you celebrate creativity? The city’s Downtown Selfie Stations project stole the spotlight. These colorful, interactive signs scattered around downtown Duluth aren’t just for decoration—they’re an invitation. Snap a pic, share it online, and show off the city’s charm. Judges called it “fun, intuitive, and memorable.” Mayor Greg Whitlock summed it up: “This award reflects our commitment to connecting with the community in fresh, creative ways.” We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets STORY 4: A legacy of healing — Documentary tells ReCAST Lawrenceville’s journey through residents’ stories Four years ago, Lawrenceville landed a $5 million federal grant to launch ReCAST, a program aimed at building resilience and supporting mental health in the community. Since then? It’s been a lifeline for so many. To celebrate its impact, ReCAST just released a 17-minute documentary featuring three residents—Josiah Hardy, Success Bonds, and Nadia Hill—whose lives were changed by the program. Jobs, housing, counseling—it’s all there. Program manager Marcus Thorne says the work isn’t done. With the grant set to expire next year, the focus is on sustainability. STORY 5: Delta CEO: Employees who 'glorified' murder 'lost the right to serve our customers' Delta CEO Ed Bastian took the stage at the Gas South District in Duluth on Wednesday to talk leadership, but the conversation veered into controversy—specifically, the firing of a Delta flight attendant who celebrated Charlie Kirk’s murder on social media. The employee’s Facebook post, which read “good riddance,” sparked outrage. Two weeks later, they were fired. Bastian didn’t mince words: “When someone glorifies violence like that, they’ve lost the privilege of being a Delta employee. We serve everyone, no matter their views.” He also revealed Delta’s next big move: direct flights to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, through a new partnership with Riyadh Air. “It’s coming soon,” he teased. STORY 6: Lawrenceville to host Atlanta Christkindl Market The Atlanta Christkindl Market is packing up its twinkling lights and bratwurst and heading to Lawrenceville this December. After years in Buckhead, it’s found a new home at the Lawrenceville Lawn—bigger, better, and ready for more holiday magic. Think mulled wine, handmade ornaments, and that cozy, old-world German charm, all with a dash of Atlanta’s energy. Since 2016, this market has been a holiday favorite, drawing crowds from all over Georgia (and beyond). Opening Nov. 28 and running through Christmas Eve, it’s free to attend. So grab your scarf, your appetite, and maybe a little extra room in your heart for holiday cheer. STORY 7: Greater Atlanta Christian Grad Malcolm Brogdon Retires After 9 NBA Seasons Malcolm Brogdon, a Greater Atlanta Christian alum, shocked the basketball world Wednesday, announcing his retirement from the NBA after nine seasons. The timing? Just a month after signing a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Knicks. “Today, I officially begin my transition out of basketball,” Brogdon shared with ESPN. “This game has demanded so much—mind, body, spirit—but it’s given me even more. I’m grateful to step away on my own terms, surrounded by family and friends.” The Knicks wished him well on social media: “Congrats on your retirement, Malcolm! Best of luck in your next chapter.” Brogdon’s career was nothing short of remarkable. A second-round pick in 2016, he defied expectations, earning Rookie of the Year with Milwaukee and Sixth Man of the Year with Boston. Injuries slowed him in recent years, but his impact never wavered. Before the NBA, he was a star at Virginia—ACC Player of the Year, two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and a first-team All-American. And let’s not forget his high school days: back-to-back state titles at GAC, Mr. Georgia Basketball, and two-time Daily Post Player of the Year. A legacy? Absolutely. Data does not just magically spring into existence. Someone, somewhere, has to decide what data gets created and the rules for its creation. We would claim that this often starts as a pretty simple exercise, and then, over time, that simplicity balloons to be pretty complex! What if, for instance, you decided to listen to every #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 going back to its inception in 1958? You may start by just capturing the song name, the artist, and the week(s) it was the #1 song. But, before you know it, you may find that you're adding in artist details…and songwriter details…and producer details…and genre details…and instrumentation details, and your dataset has 105 columns! But, oh, the questions that dataset could answer! And that's exactly the dataset that our guest for this episode, Chris Dalla Riva, created. He uses it (with a range of supplemental datasets) for his pieces in his Substack, Can't Get Much Higher, as well as the underlying raw material for his upcoming book, Uncharted Territory: What Numbers Tell Us about the Biggest Hit Songs and Ourselves. While the underlying material was music, the parallels to more staid business data were many when it comes to the underlying processes and challenges for doing that work! This episode's Measurement Bite from show sponsor Recast is an explanation of the miracle of randomization when it comes to addressing unobserved confounders from Michael Kaminsky! RHONJ is recast without Teresa. This narrative keeps arising week after week, day after day. We break down the origins of this narrative, share info on the rumored newbies, discuss the likelihood Dolo, Marge and Mel will return and what this really all means for the future of the once beloved franchise. Speaking of RHONJ, RHOC has gone as dark as RHONJ on air with lie detectors, lies and allegations of criminal activity and off air with accusations of racism, more lies and cast show downs that leave many calling for an all cast change, RHONJ style pause or, at the very least, several main cast members' termination. The RHOP trailer has come and gone, Karen Huger has been released from jail and Bravo's cameras are back up to capture The Grand Dame's first words, wig and all. Denise Richards' daughter makes headlines and Denise is caught in the fire along with ex Charlie Sheen. Last, but not least, Kyle Richards suffers new heartache that no one saw coming. @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: RELIEFBAND - reliefband.com (Use Code VELVET For 20% Off Plus Free Shipping on the Original Anti-Nausea Wristband) MOOD - www.mood.com/velvet (20% Off With Code Velvet on Federally Legal THC Shipped Right To Your Door) BALANCE OF NATURE - balanceofnature.com (Use Code Velvet To Get 35% Off Plus a Free Bottle of Fiber & Spice Of The Best Fruit, Veggie & Fiber Supplements) FLETCHY - Fletchy.lnk.to/TCA (STream “The Colossal Apostle” From Fletchy To Hear What All The Hype Is About) ADVERTISING INQUIRIES - Please contact David@advertising-execs.com MERCH Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices.
