Greg interviews old friend of the podcast Rikker Dockum, Thai language expert extraordinaire about the Thai Royal Society, an organization dedicated to overseeing, promoting and regulating the Thai language. Rikker begins by explaining that he actually wrote his undergraduate thesis on the Society more than 20 years ago, so he's a longstanding follower of their work. He notes that it originally modeled itself after the French Academy, which, among other things, develops French words for English equivalents. For instance, Greg brings up the issue of the word 'computer,' which is typically spoken in Thai as 'com-pu-TER,' even though the Institute has specified a true Thai word for the computer. Rikker goes through the etymology of the word, but Greg asks whether the work of the Institute is even necessary if people don't adopt the words they come up with. Rikker defends the use of public funds for work codifying 'official' Thai, noting that were it left to the private marketplace, the work would never get done. The old friends continue their conversation about the Institute, emphasizing the need for such an organization for a language like Thai, which is vital to the history and culture of Thailand, but plays little role outside the country. Very few languages in the world are so popularly dominant that their continued preservation is assured, and unfortunately, Thai language is not one of them. In the next installment of our immigration mini series, we're rebroadcasting the episode, “Empowering disabled refugees,” with Mustafa Rfat from Season 6. Since coming into office, the Trump administration has suspended refugee resettlement, strangled the asylum process, set the lowest refugee admissions cap ever, issued travel bans for immigrants coming from dozens of countries, and eliminated vital services for refugees resettling in the United States. All of these actions have disproportionate impacts for refugees with disabilities, who, according to some estimates, constitute nearly a third of the global refugee population. Check out the original episode page for more about Mustafa Rfat and his research. Also be sure to read his latest article in the Lancet, which highlights the health harms that result from lack of communication access for asylum seekers in detention under the current administration's deportation policies, which blatantly disregard disability rights laws.--Let us know what you think with a comment or review!Visit our website for transcripts.Subscribe to Qudsiya's Substack, Getting Down To ItSupport the team behind the podcast with a donation

This week's Recast is from April 2020. Why This Episode Matters Now:In 2022, the war in Ukraine revealed something our partners had been experiencing but we hadn't fully articulated: the traditional model of intact, homogeneous teams wasn't sufficient for the emerging operational environment. Individuals with diverse expertise, geography, language, and allegiances needed to rapidly converge into what we call Tactical Swarms—heterogeneous cross-functional units that form, solve emergent problems, and disperse. Our recent white paper, The Fourth Generation of Military Special Operations Selection & Assessment, explores this evolution in depth. But six years ago, Preston laid the foundational concepts in this conversation with Coleman. What the Research Shows:Many operators who excelled at teamwork—performing with known, homogeneous teams—struggled with teaming: the ability to rapidly build cohesion within heterogeneous groups. This episode examines why routine versus critical communication and field observations across special operations, emergency medicine, and other high-stakes environments. In this episode, Preston and Coleman describe how tactical swarms and X teams differ from traditional team structures, and they distinguish between routine and critical communication and when teams must shift between them. A mere week into the New Year and we already have a new release that'll likely wind up being one of the best horror movies of 2026.Johnny Sequoyah leads Johannes Roberts' Primate as Lucy. While visiting her father (Troy Kotsur) and sister (Gia Hunter) back home in Hawaii, another family member of Lucy's takes a turn — their chimp, Ben. Ben is bitten by a rabid mongoose. While Lucy and her friends enjoy the family pool and dream-like views, Ben loses himself to the sickness and becomes, as Roberts put it, “the Freddy Krueger of chimps,” and brutally starts picking them off one by one. With Primate playing in theaters nationwide, Sequoyah swung by the Collider Ladies Night studio to dig into her journey, including highs like working with a legend like Alfonso Cuarón, and also the lows of being recast in a show. On top of that, Sequoyah offered up a behind-the-scenes look at the staggeringly impressive movie magic required to create her Primate scene partner, Ben the killer chimp. Hosted on Acast. If your team isn't performing at the level you want, the problem may not be skill, strategy, or effort... it may be vision. In this episode, Kelly breaks down one of the most underutilized but powerful leadership skills in business: vision casting. You'll learn why vision is not a "once-a-year" exercise, how it directly impacts performance and profitability, and how to balance clarity with innovation in a rapidly changing market. If you want a more aligned, motivated, high-performing team in 2026, this episode is your blueprint. One of the most underappreciated but powerful skills of an effective leader is the ability to cast vision. Many entrepreneurs struggle with team performance — but rarely stop to ask whether they've clearly and consistently articulated a compelling future for their people to move toward. In this episode, Kelly unpacks why: Top performers don't just want compensation; they want meaning. The best teams don't work for you, they work with you. In a rapidly changing economy, vision provides certainty when strategy must shift. Kelly shares how leaders can: Recast vision consistently — not just during annual planning. Create a sense of clarity and belonging for their team. Lead confidently even when the full path forward isn't clear. In today's fast-shifting business environment, where AI, buying behavior, platforms, margins, and market conditions are constantly evolving, the leaders who thrive will be the ones who can both hold the long-term vision and iterate the short-term strategy. As the Trump administration Continues to unleash Immigration officers into our communities from Los Angeles to Minneapolis, to murder and terrorize undocumented people and citizens alike, we wanted to highlight the specific dangers that disabled immigrants face, and the disabling impacts of ICE enforcement and detention in this very special mini series on the intersection of immigration and disability. We'll start by reprising our season 2 premiere, Law, policy, and disabled immigrants, Featuring immigration and disability experts Katherine Perez and Roxana Moussavian. This episode is an excellent primer on the history of racism and ableism in the American immigration system, and how the targeting and exclusion of disabled immigrants continues to manifest in modern immigration law and policy. This is an urgent listen to help us all understand how we arrived at our current moment. You can find more information and resources on the original episode page on our website. It takes courage to reimagine a classic. Xiaolu Guo was drawn to Herman Melville's “Moby-Dick,” from the first time she read it in her native Chinese. The writing was lyrical — hard to translate — and the descriptions of sailing were dense. But the symbolism of the great white whale and the sea-faring captain obsessed with revenge captivated her. Her new novel is a retelling of this classic with a young girl at its center. Protagonist Ishmaelle goes to sea, disguised as a boy, in a desperate grasp for freedom. She wants to leave poverty, gender norms and religious traditions behind. When she ends up on a whaling ship, captained by a free Black man named Seneca, she meets a swash-buckling crew of people who broaden her world — and ours. Guo joins host Kerri Miller this week to talk about her reimagined “Moby-Dick” which probes gender, race, humanity's connection to animals and the nature of belonging.Guest: Xiaolu Guo is the author of “Radical” and “Nine Continents.” Her new novel is “Call Me Ishmaelle.”Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.Subscribe to Big Books and Bold Ideas with Kerri Miller on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.

Another classic recast! One of the craziest stories from recent Thai history. Continuing our series on interesting episodes in Thai history, this episode focuses on the infamous Blue Diamond Affair, It all started when a Thai gardener named Kriangkrai Techamon, who was working in Saudi Arabia, decided to make off with $20 million worth of gems and jewelry belonging to a Saudi royal. Although the thief was caught shortly after his return to Thailand, he had already sold much of the loot, including the famed 50 karat 'Blue Diamond.' No problem - the gems were returned to Saudi Arabia and an apology issued. Case closed! BUT! Soon after the treasure was returned, Saudi authorities claimed that over half of the returned gems were fake, including the Blue Diamond. The Saudi authorities sent a special team of investigators to Bangkok to investigate...and what followed was a tale of murder, kidnapping, and black magic, with the ultimate result being a near-total diplomatic breakdown between the two countries that continues to this day (update - diplomatic relations were restored in 2022). It's a plot almost too twisty for Hollywood, but listen in for details on one of the strangest episodes in Thai history. As always, the podcast will continue to be 100% funded by listeners just like you who get some special swag from us. And we'll keep our Facebook, Twitter, and LINE accounts active so you can send us comments, questions, or whatever you want to share.Bangkok History Highlight: The Blue Diamond Affair

That darn data. It's so complicated and fragmented and gap-filled and noisy that no amount of time is ever enough to truly get to the bottom of all of its complexity. As a result, it's pretty easy to fill all of our time handling as much of that underlying data messiness as possible. At what cost, though? It's easy for the analyst's connection to the business to suffer as they get mired (too) deeply in the data and lose sight of the broader business needs. In this episode, the gang had a chat about business acumen—what it is, how to develop it, and why it's a must-have for any data or analytics role. This episode's Measurement Bite from show sponsor Recast is a brief explanation of identifiability—what it is and how to check for it using simulation—from Michael Kaminsky! This episode is brought to you by our Newborn Sleep Solutions Guide, because newborn sleep doesn't need fixing, it needs understanding. Newborn sleep can feel like one of those things everyone has opinions on… and somehow none of them actually help at 3am. In this episode of The Birth Lounge, HeHe breaks down what newborn sleep really looks like and why daytime sleep matters way more than most parents are ever told. This conversation focuses on biology, not bootcamp sleep rules. HeHe explains how supporting daytime rest sets the stage for better nights, what wake windows actually mean for a brand-new baby, and how simple tools like swaddling, white noise, and a full belly can make a big difference. No rigid schedules. No “cry it out.” Just realistic, nervous-system-friendly support for brand-new humans and the parents learning alongside them. You'll also hear HeHe's go-to tips for creating a sleep environment that works with your baby's circadian rhythm (hello, darkness and sound), plus gear recommendations that are actually useful, not just trendy. She wraps it all up with resources like the Newborn Sleep Solutions Guide for parents who want clarity without overwhelm. If you're wondering whether your baby's sleep is normal, or you just want a calmer, more intuitive way to approach those early weeks, this episode is your exhale. In Episode 188, we are re-casting our conversation with Wells Thompson, Former MLS midfielder and 1st Round Draft Pick, Co-Founder of Soccer Resilience, husband, and father. This was our most downloaded episode of 2025 and Top 2 for both Paul and me. In this episode, he talked with Paul and Phil about his journey from childhood adversity to the MLS, his struggles with identity and mental health, his faith journey and his personal why relating to that journey, his difficulties transitioning to life after soccer, why left Soccer Resilience after founding and leading it for a few years, and a lot of wisdom regarding true leadership. They also discuss how soccer and other sports are incredible classrooms, and how he is learning deep life lessons every single day as a stay-at-home dad, husband, and father of athletes. The interview is full of vulnerable moments, personal stories, and practical advice. Specifically, they discuss: · How Wells developed his passion for soccer, leadership, faith in God, and how he went from rolling with the wrong crowd, getting into drugs, and not being recruited to college to playing for Wake Forest and getting drafted 5th in the MLS Draft (7:30) · Lessons he learned in his pro career (17:10) · His transition to life after soccer (20:51) · His personal why, vulnerability as a superpower, and how he is living out his life purpose (27:58) · The revelation that caused him to leave Soccer Resilience (32:44) · How Soccer Resilience got started, some of the great things coming out of it, and how starting/running a business is like working to be a pro soccer player (and a couple great quotes from Nelson Mandela and Billy Graham) (36:39) · How he went from not making ODP to playing professional soccer, how that is relevant to the parenting of his kids while they are playing sports, and what we can learn from his journey (43:39) · Balancing pushing our kids to be the best they can be and learning life lessons from sports without getting too involved (especially at the wrong time or place) and/or forcing them to play sports they don't want to play (52:11) · What actually goes into being a pro athlete (55:30) · What he didn't learn as a pro athlete (hint: it is very relevant to this podcast) (57:25) · Leadership from the bench (1:02:26) · Lessons that he has learned from the game that he uses in his marriage and parenting (1:04:31) · What he has watched, read, or listened to that has impacted his thinking on how soccer explains life and leadership (1:07:58) Resources and Links from this Episode · Uncut Video of the Episode · HSEL Facebook Group · Warrior Way Soccer · Coaching the Bigger Game Program · Phil's email for DISC Training · Wrestling with Angels: A True Story of Addiction, Resurrection, Hope, Fashion, Training Celebrities, and Man's Oldest Sport, John Hanrahan · Main Street Millionaire: How to Make Extraordinary Wealth Buying Ordinary Businesses, Codie Sanchez

If there's one thing that we absolutely knew would be coming along with the increased interest and use of AI, it would be… more acronyms! And, along with the acronyms, we pretty much could predict that we see a lot of online flexing through casual dropping of said acronyms as though they're deeply understood by everyone who's anyone. We tackled one such acronym on this episode: MCP! That's "model context protocol" for those who like their acronyms written out, and Sam Redfern joined us to help us wrap our heads around the topic. You see, MCP is kinda' like some other more familiar acronyms like API and XML. But, it's also like… fingers? Sam's enthusiasm and explanation certainly had us ready to dive in! This episode's Measurement Bite from show sponsor Recast is an explanation of model robustness from Michael Kaminsky! Most executives think a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is a lifeline. It's actually a tombstone. They believe if they just work harder, hit the impossible metrics, and play nice, they can turn the ship around. But here's the cold reality: A PIP isn't designed for your improvement. It's a paper trail designed for your termination. It's a paid interview period—and the clock is ticking. Why this matters There is a dangerous gap between what corporate policy says (HR is here to help) and how the game is actually played (HR protects the company). When you are being managed out, your natural instinct is to defend your performance or seek mediation. That instinct is wrong. By the time you spot the signs—nitpicking, the "cold shoulder," or a sudden shift in responsibilities—the decision has likely already been made. If you treat a PIP as a genuine coaching moment, you lose your leverage. If you don't know how to document the "buckets of wrongdoing" and build a counter-narrative, you walk away with damaged confidence and the bare minimum severance. But if you know the playbook, you can turn a forced exit into a negotiated victory. In this episode, we unpack: Why the "Performance Improvement Plan" is almost never about performance. The exact signs that you are being managed out (and why a new manager is the #1 red flag). Why HR is not your friend—and why going to them too early destroys your leverage. The "Buckets of Wrongdoing" framework: How to document toxic behavior to build your case. The "At-Will" employment trap: Why it's a one-way street that benefits the employer. How to negotiate a severance package even when they try to offer you nothing. The mental toll of gaslighting and why validation is the first step to recovery. A real transformation A professional facing a "Me Too" situation involving a CEO, dating back 20 years. She was wrongly terminated and then gaslit for seven months. Her family and friends told her she was crazy, urged her to drop it, and warned she was damaging her reputation. She felt isolated and powerless. She partnered with Dan Goodman to stop playing the victim and start building a case. They refused to accept the silence. They documented the timeline, identified the inconsistencies, and presented a "scathing, reputationally damaging" narrative back to the employer. After months of being ignored, she received a $50,000 offer out of the blue. But more importantly, the gaslighting stopped. The employer acknowledged the liability through their wallet. She moved from feeling "crazy" to being fully vindicated—and the negotiation is still ongoing. Timestamps (0:00) — Intro (2:16) — Why you should never go to HR expecting a solution (5:20) — The PIP reality: It's a paid interview period (8:35) — How to spot when you are being managed out (The "New Leader" Red Flag) (10:24) — The financial motivation behind making you quit (14:40) — How to leverage "Buckets of Wrongdoing" for severance (19:00) — Preparing for the worst: What documents you need to gather now (24:00) — Using HR vs. Being played by HR (29:40) — The "At-Will" employment scam and why it's one-sided (36:30) — The mental health cost of carrying workplace trauma The takeaway Blind loyalty is a career liability. If you are put on a PIP, the company has already broken up with you; they just haven't moved their stuff out yet. Don't internalize the gaslighting. Document the dysfunction. Turn their desire to get rid of you into your capital to walk away paid. This week's episode is a Recast as we review a fundamental conversation between Preston and Coleman Ruiz (MCTI's co-founder and former Director of Performance) on the concept of "Residue"—the psychological and emotional substance left behind after immersion in high-stakes environments. As we approach the end of the year, we are revisiting this episode to help our listeners navigate the transition from one year to the next and to continue or begin a ritual of reflection. Coleman and Preston explore how the "residue" of our experiences is neither good nor bad, but rather a byproduct that must be processed. Without intentional routines, this residue can "harden," inhibiting our ability to move into a new year with clarity. The conversation covers various aspects of professional and personal life, including the impact of extreme experiences, the importance of intentionality and self-compassion, and the value of a 'third thing' to help balance life. This thought-provoking discussion is essential for anyone involved in mission critical fields, as it emphasizes the need for better tools and self-awareness to manage the residue of intense experiences. Whether you are coming off a high-intensity deployment or simply looking to reset after a demanding year, this episode offers a framework to help you leverage your past to build a more resilient self.Find the featured paper on our website: https://missioncti.com/resources/If you value this discussion, the best way to support our work and stay up to date on future episodes is to subscribe and leave us a quick rating or review. Do you believe that to be a badass, you also have to be the "B-word"—that you cannot be effective and liked at the same time? Many leaders chase power, thinking it comes from controlling resources—like holding the "car keys" to get what they want. But power and status are not the same thing; power is what you control, but status is how much you are respected. And in the long run, resources follow respect. Why this matters If your audience doesn't value or respect you, it is nearly impossible to be influential, regardless of your title. Most professionals treat influence as a transaction, only focusing on their network when they need a job or a favor. But human judgments are not random; people instantly categorize you as "friend or foe" based on your warmth and competence. If you aren't intentionally building your "status bank" when you don't need anything, you won't have the leverage when the stakes are high. In this episode, we unpack: The Power vs. Status Split: Why power controls valued resources, while status is respected and valued by others. The "Car Keys" Trap: How holding resources (like budgets or authority) creates temporary influence but fails to build lasting respect. The Podium Coaching Gap: Why women consistently ask different questions about negotiation and promotion than their male counterparts. The Friend or Foe Radar: The two distinct dimensions—Warmth (intent) and Competence (ability)—that our brains use to judge every leader. The "Latte" Rule: Why the absolute best time to build your network is when you are content and simply ordering a coffee. Navigating Hotspots: How to execute tough decisions, like layoffs, with both assertiveness and warmth to protect your professional reputation. Authenticity vs. Strategy: Why being "likable" isn't about faking a personality—it's about strategically demonstrating that you care about others' outcomes. It's the most…won…derful…tiiiiime…of the year! And by that, we mean it's the time of the year when we sit back, look at each other, and ask, "Where did all the time go?!" Forget preparing better answers. The fastest way to stand out in interviews, networking, and executive conversations isn't what you say — it's what you ask. Most professionals rely on generic questions. And then wonder why they're forgettable. In this episode, Brenden Kumarasamy — founder of MasterTalk — breaks down the 100, 200, and 300-level question framework and explains why the quality of your questions is one of the clearest predictors of how you'll perform before you're ever hired. This isn't about sounding impressive. It's about signaling judgment, preparation, and future value. Why this matters Every interview ends the same way: “What questions do you have for me?” Most candidates waste that moment. And that moment is often the only part of the conversation that actually differentiates you. Weak questions don't just stall momentum — they quietly tell decision-makers how you think. In this episode, we unpack: Why 100-level questions instantly put you in the “everyone else” category How 200-level questions create rarity and make people lean in What makes a 300-level question so powerful it changes how you're evaluated Why hiring decisions are made on future contribution, not past experience How great questions act as a proxy for judgment, preparation, and leadership The moment Brenden realized time mattered more than money — and how that shifted his career How to build leverage whether you stay corporate or move into entrepreneurship Timestamps (0:00) – Intro (2:43) — How competitive case competitions became a communication business (6:08) – Why the quality of your questions shapes your career (10:29) – 100-level vs 200-level questions and why most people blend in (13:07) – 300-level questions and how they change how you're evaluated (19:27) – Why questions predict performance better than résumés (21:25) – The moment time became more valuable than money (26:30) – Building leverage whether you stay corporate or leave The real takeaway Your résumé explains where you've been. Your questions forecast who you'll be inside the company. And executives know exactly how to read the difference. Send us a textBefore we close things down for the holidays, I decided to bring back one of my favorite interviews from the vault. In 2021 during one of our Bookkeeping Biz Workshop rounds, I brought Katie on to chat about a program she had just created—which is still going strong today—in fact, has been revamped and redesiged since she created it, and I want to make sure you all know about it. But more so than that, I wanted to bring this conversation back to you in case you're planning for the new year. This will give you some things to consider, especially if you're balancing motherhood with building your business, or dreaming of starting your business in 2026.In this episode you'll hear:Katie's background: CPA → corporate → motherhood → bookkeeping business (and how she was “paid to quit” at the perfect time)The emotional reality of leaving corporate—even when it's the right moveWhy the early seasons of motherhood are intense, and how that shapes business decisionsHow Katie's bookkeeping business grew: referrals, small beginnings, pricing lessons, and early client expansionThe mindset shift: bookkeeping as a stable, scalable foundation (especially once you hire a team)Hiring earlier than feels comfortable: babysitters, cleaners, and bookkeepers as “buying back time”Why working at home with kids around can be harder than being fully out of the houseOffice space + opportunity cost: how one monthly client can fund the setup that changes everythingTraining a team the right way: slow client-by-client handoff, upfront time investment, long-term payoffClient continuity + freedom: not being the only person clients rely onKatie's Become a Bookkeeper (BABS) course overview: Learn → Shadow → Apply (practicum)Resources mentioned in this episode:Become A BookkeeperConnect with Katie: : instagram.com/orderlyaccountingbykatieListen to Katie's Podcast: Profits & ProseccoSign up for Become A BookkeeperThanks for listening. Russ Ewell says, "Fortune smiled on me the day I became a father of a family with disabilities. Human limits became real as I watched my sons fight to overcome Autism and Down Syndrome. Their inspired efforts increased the intensity of purpose shared by my wife and me. We learned to live differently."A significant number of people fear being different. Disability has served to help my family and me overcome this fear. It has clarified what's important and freed us from convention. The struggle has consistently opened our eyes to the discovery necessary to overcome our family's human limits. This has been my personal journey. As a minister, I've applied what I've learned from my family's experience to my spiritual life and process, constantly looking for ways to grow and refusing to settle for tradition or convention. This type of transformative thinking is something I believe a relationship with God should do for everybody.Russ joins Dale on today's podcast to help us understand how to think differently in our leadership when it comes to reaching the next generations. Semantic layers are having something of a moment, but they're not actually new as a concept. Ever since the first database table was designed with cryptic field names that no business user could possibly understand, there's been a need for some form of mapping and translation. Should every company be considering employing a semantic layer? Is the idea of a single, comprehensive semantic layer within an organization a monolithic concept that is doomed to fail? These questions and more get bandied about on this episode, where we were joined by industry legend Cindi Howson, Chief Data & AI Strategy Officer at Thoughtspot. The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
On this episode - a classic ReCast from season 3! - Greg interviews Khun Saba, a disabled rights activist in Bangkok. It's a topic near and dear to the Bangkok Podcast, because we want everyone to enjoy Bangkok, which is very hard to do if you don't have full mobility. Khun Saba explains that he became aware of the difficulty of moving around Thai cities, especially Bangkok, after he became disabled, and notes that while physical and structural issues are important, the key issue is really awareness. Simply put, if people blindly accept all the problems with transportation in Bangkok, then of course they will never be solved. Greg asks Khun Saba about a notorious incident in which he broke a pane of glass when he couldn't use the elevator at Asoke BTS Station. The circumstances were unusual and need to be fully listened to to be understood, but the incident highlights the daily frustration of disabled people in Bangkok. Khun Saba also makes clear that his organization fights for the rights of all Bangkokians to safe and convenient access to transportation in the city and not just the rights of people who are actually physically disabled. He describes his dream of making Bangkok a city of truly international standards where all citizens are equal in terms of their access to the city. We urge you to like the page of Accessibility is Freedom - you'll get some great insight into Bangkok from a whole different point of view. As always, the podcast will continue to be 100% funded by listeners just like you who get some special swag from us. And we'll keep our Facebook, Twitter, and LINE accounts active so you can send us comments, questions, or whatever you want to share.

In this episode, Mark talks with Cynthia Passmore, who is a professor of science education at the University of California, Davis. They talk about the differences between the approach to modeling developed at ASU and UC Davis, which seem to be more and more similar as time goes by. They talk about how all of our understanding in scientific study is based on models, even if we do not specifically hold those up as "models" per se. We use mental models to explain the world around us and to better understand how and why certain interactions happen the way they do. They talk about modeling instruction and the Next Generation Science Standards and how modeling really gets students to do the thinking as scientists and make the connections between what we see and the explanations for what we see. They talk about Cynthia's new book, even get to talk about some of Cynthia's recent research on effective teaching using modeling methods in the high school biology classroom. Guest Cynthia Passmore Cynthia Passmore is currently a Professor specializing in science education in the University of California, Davis School of Education. She did her doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and prior to that she was a high school science teacher. Her research focuses on the role of models and modeling in student learning, curriculum design and teacher professional development. She investigates model-based reasoning in a range of contexts and is particularly interested in understanding how the design of learning environments interacts with students' reasoning practices. She has been the principal investigator of several large grants and is the lead on a collaborative curriculum design project that has created a full-year high school biology course. A key practitioner publication is the edited volume: Helping Students Make Sense of the World Using Next Generation Science and Engineering Practices from NSTA Press. Highlights [2:44] Cynthia "I think the inclusion of modeling as a practice in the next generation Science standards has also brought a lot more people to the work of modeling than used to be the case." [3:25] Cynthia "Models are the functional unit of scientific thought." [7:51] Cynthia "The depiction is important. I'm not trying to say it's not, but if all we're doing is asking kids to reproduce representations and depictions of things, then we're losing the modeling practice, in my view." Before you listen to this episode, can you quantify how useful you expect it to be? That's a prior! And "priors" is a word that gets used a lot in this discussion with Michael Kaminsky as we try to demystify the world of Bayesian statistics. Luckily, you can just listen to the episode once and then update your expectation—no need to simulate listening to the show a few thousand times or crunch any numbers whatsoever. The most important takeaway is that you'll know you've achieved Bayesian clarity when you come to realize that human beings are naturally Bayesian, and the underlying principles behind Bayesian statistics are inherently intuitive. This episode's Measurement Bite from show sponsor Recast is a brief explanation of statistical significance (and why shorthanding it is problematic…and why confidence intervals are generally more practically useful in business than p-values) from Michael Kaminsky!
