Sarah Spradlin knew she wanted to serve her nation in uniform, and to her the only option was the U.S. Marine Corps. She was commissioned as an officer after completing ROTC training at Virginia Tech in May 2001. Within months, the U.S. was at war following the 9/11 attacks. But Spradlin was not deployed to a war zone. After an assignment in Okinawa, she returned to the U.S. to oversee the training of female Marine recruits at Parris Island and focusing on ways to improve manpower. After that, she found herself at Marine Forces Special Operation Command, or MARSOC. It was in that position that Spradlin began researching emotional intelligence in special operators, and especially female special operators. In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Spradlin takes us with her to Okinawa, Parris Island, and MARSOC. And she explains how she got this new science off the ground, what she's learned about female special operators, how they interact with their male counterparts, and how her research has helped the effectiveness of our special operators.

In April of 1956, a platoon of Marine Recruits were being put through the paces at Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island. On a fateful Sunday, some of the recruits were trying the patience of their Drill Instructor, which was ill advised. Diciplinary corrections were doled out, but unfortunately the discipline resulted in mutiple fatalities.
Michael Brumbaugh, a native of Harborcreek, Pennsylvania, exemplifies a life of service, leadership, and unwavering faith. Growing up, Michael spent 14 years playing competitive ice hockey, culminating in reaching the elite AAA level with the Erie Travel Hockey League. After graduating from high school in 2000, he briefly pursued a degree in criminal justice at Mercyhurst College Northeast. However, he soon felt a greater calling and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 2001, marking the start of an exceptional military service. Michael completed bootcamp at Parris Island, South Carolina, and the Infantry Training Battalion in North Carolina before joining Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines at Camp Pendleton, California. His military service included a deployment with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (SOC) in 2002 and two combat deployments to Iraq in 2003 and Al Fallujah in 2004, where he served as an operations specialist. Following his honorable discharge in 2005, Michael pursued higher education, earning an Associate's Degree in Business Marketing and Management from Tri-State Business Institute. In late 2005, Michael experienced a spiritual transformation, accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a Weekend to Remember event by FamilyLife. He publicly affirmed his faith through baptism in 2006 at Erie First Assembly of God in Erie, Pennsylvania. That same year, on May 27, 2006, Michael married Liz (Sabulsky), committing to build a Christ-centered family. The couple welcomed their first child, Caleb, in Pennsylvania. In January 2009, the Brumbaugh family relocated to Colorado, where Michael began working for the Colorado State Department of Corrections. In October 2010, he transitioned to the U.S. Department of Justice and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Behavioral Science, graduating summa cum laude from Colorado State University. During this time, the family welcomed their second child, Paige, further enriching their lives. Michael now serves with the Department of Homeland Security, where he has made a significant impact through his dedication and expertise. In 2021, Michael and his family became active members of Brave Church in Colorado. His passion for serving God and others flourished as he stepped into roles such as Corps Director, a member of the Emergency Response Team, and currently as a Shepherding Elder. He also leads a weekly men's Bible study at his home, affectionately called "Tun Tavern 2," where he mentors and disciples other men in their spiritual journeys. Guided by the principles of serving his family, loving his wife as Christ loved the church, and raising his children in faith, Michael exemplifies a life of purpose and integrity. His unwavering commitment is anchored in the words of Joshua 24:15 (NASB): “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” This verse encapsulates his devotion to living a life that honors God in all aspects. Uncommon Disciple helps everyday men build an eternal legacy. We believe God created men to be leaders of honor, integrity, strength and grace. The probelm is that while many men desire to become all God has called them to be, they burn out along the way. Fathers desire to be godly examples to their children but carry the guilt and shame of their failures. Young singles may be full of vision, but they lack the wisdom and endurance to stay on course to fulfillment. These all-to-common stories are the reason we believe God is calling us to build uncommon disciples. Much more than resources, conferences, and community groups, Uncommon Disciple is a movement of men seeking sustainable life change. Make sure you subscribe and stay tuned to everything we are doing. Robert Day joined the U.S. Marine Corps just a few months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Soon he was being transformed into a Marine at Parris Island, and, less than three years later, he would be part of some of the most intense combat of the Iraq War during the Second Battle of Fallujah in November and December 2004. He served as a machine gunner with the 1st Battlion/8th Marines. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Sgt. Day takes on a quiet first deployment to Iraq, into the much more intense training for the second tour in Iraq, and into the gritty details of the urban combat in Fallujah when his platoon returned to the war.Day explains the tactical approach in Fallujah, what it was like firing at the enemy while being fired upon, his role during the house-to-house combat throughout Fallujah, the mindset needed for a relentlessly intense battle that raged for weeks, and how his platoon dealt with the loss of one of its most beloved members. It's a fascinating, detailed, and candid account of some of the toughest fighting of the Iraq War.

Spaniards had been in South Carolina off and on since perhaps 1514, and certainly by 1521. Even in the 1660s Spaniards occasionally came up the coast to trade and visit Santa Helena on Parris Island, which had largely been abandoned to Indians. As late as 1663, however, the English had not explored even the coast of the future Palmetto State. That would change after the granting of the Carolina Proprietary in March 1663. In 1663 and 1666, two expeditions from Barbados, then perhaps the wealthiest corner of the nascent English empire, would explore coastal South Carolina, and set the stage for the first surviving English settlement on that coast, the town of Charleston in 1670. This is the story of those two expeditions, the first by William Hilton, after whom Hilton Head was quickly named, and the second by Robert Sandford, who named the Ashley River. Disbarred South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh has been officially removed from a wrongful death lawsuit following a $500,000 settlement with the family of Mallory Beach, who died in a tragic boat crash in February 2019. This development, confirmed by court documents, brings a partial close to the legal aftermath of the fatal accident, which also involved Murdaugh's son Paul, who was accused of driving the boat under the influence at the time of the crash. Mallory Beach, a 19-year-old student at the University of South Carolina, was on board the boat with Paul Murdaugh and friends when it crashed into the Archers Creek Bridge near Parris Island. The collision threw Beach overboard, and after an extensive search, her body was discovered in a nearby river eight days later. Beach's death sparked a lengthy legal battle as her family sought accountability for the crash. According to law enforcement officials, Paul Murdaugh, who was also 19, was allegedly operating the boat while intoxicated. Witnesses and authorities indicated that the group had been drinking on the evening of the accident, and Paul had been observed purchasing alcohol at a Parker's Kitchen convenience store in Ridgeland earlier that night. In 2019, Paul was charged with three felony counts, including boating under the influence causing death. However, he never stood trial due to his death in June 2021, when he and his mother, Maggie, were killed at the family's Colleton County hunting estate. Alex Murdaugh, now serving a life sentence, was later convicted for the murders of his wife and son. In October 2023, a court filing detailed that Murdaugh's insurance provider, Progressive, agreed to pay $500,000 as part of a settlement with the Beach family. However, the payment was contingent upon Murdaugh's removal from the wrongful death lawsuit. The filing stated, “Progressive will only proceed with this payout on the condition that Alex Murdaugh is released from the litigation.” This $500,000 payout was the latest in a series of legal resolutions linked to the case. The financial settlement from Progressive adds to a prior settlement agreement reached with Parker's Corporation. In July 2023, the Beach family settled with Parker's for $15 million. The convenience store chain was implicated in the lawsuit because Paul Murdaugh, who was underage, allegedly purchased alcohol there before the crash. A judge approved this settlement after a prolonged period of negotiation. The legal proceedings surrounding the wrongful death lawsuit have drawn significant attention, particularly given Alex Murdaugh's high-profile criminal cases. Murdaugh, once a prominent Lowcountry attorney, was disbarred following allegations of extensive financial misconduct. Prosecutors argued that financial strains and the looming Beach lawsuit motivated Murdaugh to kill his wife and son, fearing that his theft of millions from clients would soon be exposed. In March 2023, a jury convicted him on two counts of murder for the deaths of Paul and Maggie, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. In addition to the murder charges, Murdaugh faced further legal consequences for his financial misdeeds. In May 2023, he pleaded guilty to 22 financial-related charges, with the court ordering him to pay $8.7 million in restitution to his victims. He received an additional 40-year sentence for these offenses, intensifying the overall penalties for the crimes he committed. Despite Murdaugh's criminal convictions and ongoing life sentence, the civil litigation involving Mallory Beach's tragic death had lingered until this month's settlement. Following Progressive's $500,000 payout, the court closed the Beach family's wrongful death lawsuit, bringing an end to the legal proceedings related to the fatal boat crash. The Beach family's attorney commented, “This resolution provides a measure of closure to the family, who has endured unimaginable loss and prolonged litigation. Our hope is that the Beach family can now begin the process of healing.” This settlement marks the final chapter in the legal cases connected to the fatal boat crash that took Mallory Beach's life, a tragedy that ultimately set off a chain of events ending with multiple convictions and financial penalties for Alex Murdaugh. #AlexMurdaugh #MalloryBeach #WrongfulDeath #BoatCrash #Parker'sKitchen #ProgressiveInsurance #SouthCarolinaJustice Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Our hope is that the Beach family can now begin the process of healing.” This settlement marks the final chapter in the legal cases connected to the fatal boat crash that took Mallory Beach's life, a tragedy that ultimately set off a chain of events ending with multiple convictions and financial penalties for Alex Murdaugh. #AlexMurdaugh #MalloryBeach #WrongfulDeath #BoatCrash #Parker'sKitchen #ProgressiveInsurance #SouthCarolinaJustice Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In this episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, explore the life of Anthony Glenn II, a Marine Corps veteran whose story is a testament to the power of resilience, transformation, and the fighting spirit of a Marine. Anthony's early life was marked by adversity. His youth was a struggle for attention and direction, leading him into frequent run-ins with the law. Yet, it was this very fight for survival and identity that forged his path to the Marine Corps. Anthony's transition from a troubled youth to a disciplined Marine is not just a story of personal achievement; it's a narrative that resonates with the core values of the military community. His journey into the Marine Corps, driven by a quest for structure and a refusal to return to a life that offered no future, is a powerful reflection of the transformative impact of military service. Despite initial reservations, including a stark warning from his father, a retired Army Colonel, Anthony's determination saw him through the rigorous challenges of boot camp at Parris Island, where he quickly learned the true meaning of discipline and camaraderie. His military career, however, was not without its trials. Anthony's early inclination towards confrontation followed him into service, leading to multiple altercations. Yet, it was the Marine Corps' structured environment and the mentorship he received that eventually helped him channel his aggression into a more constructive outlet, showcasing the Marine Corps' ability to mold individuals into their best selves. Beyond the uniform, Anthony's story is one of continuous growth and contribution. His post-military life, marked by a successful foray into real estate, demonstrates the seamless transition of military skills into civilian success. His work in real estate, particularly with veteran first-time home buyers, is a testament to his commitment to serving others, reflecting the enduring values of honor, courage, and commitment instilled in him by the Marine Corps. In 2017, Anthony founded the non-profit Veteran Homeowner's Club, to provide assistance and education programs to transitioning service members Anthony's willingness to help other military veterans navigate the complexities of civilian life, especially in securing homeownership, is a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration. His journey embodies the essence of the military spirit – fighting, overcoming adversity, and never ceasing to strive for excellence. As I continue to reflect upon our service in C1/6 2nd platoon, I am joined by two of my closest buddies from back in the day. Pudge, Rumpler and I were among a tight crew of individuals who shipped down to Parris Island in June of 1993, remained together throughout our schooling and the entirety of our time in Charlie Company 1/6, 2nd Platoon. Stripped of our civilian lives, we reflexively formed a surrogate family and leaned on one another to make it through times, both good and bad. These men are my brothers and it was an honor to have a conversation with them, 31 years after the fact. Topics discussed: - Motivation for joining the Corps - Boot camp memories - Notable experiences and Devildogs - Amtrak life - Remember when

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Royal Earle, Jr. and a buddy were on their way to join the the U.S. Marine Corps to take the fight to Japan. But his friend got snagged by the U.S. Navy instead. Unfazed, Earle endured Parris Island and Camp Pendleton and received training as a switchboard operator and wireman in preparation for service in the Pacific. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Mr. Earle walks us through his biggest challenge in boot camp and a big mystery during his time at Camp Pendleton. Then he describes operations in the Marshall Islands before the landing and combat on Saipan, which Earle says involved the most terrifying moments of his wartime experience.Earle goes on to tell us about landing on Iwo Jima, navigating the black sand beaches, and the toll the Japanese inflicted on the Marines, including switchboard personnel. He also shares the most harrowing moment on Iwo Jima that brought a much happier ending than he first feared. Finally, Mr. Earle explains the pride and honor her feels to have served in the Marines and how that feeling welled up in him many decades later.
John DeGennero was just 15 years old and playing at a park on the Sunday the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After turning 17 in 1943, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, determined to help win the war. Over the next two years, that teenager perfected a skill that would be crucial to winning the Battle of Iwo Jima. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Mr. DeGennaro tells us about boot camp at Parris Island and then specializing in the science of sound ranging. From there he describes arriving at Iwo Jima and barely surviving his first night on the beach, watching the flag raising atop Mt. Suribachi, and the sounding ranging work he did to pinpoint and eliminate Japanese artillery positions on the island - and for which his unit was honored with a presidential citation. Finally, DeGennaro shares what the plan for his unit would have been if an invasion of Japan had been necessary - a plan he says that would likely have wiped out his entire division.
Louis Bourgault was 16 years old when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor - too young to formally join the military. After his father rejected a teenage plot to go join the Canadian forces, Bourgault enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps when he turned 17. After grueling basic training at Parris Island, Bourgault was tapped as a message runner. He was soon off to San Diego and then shipped to New Zealand. After spending time loading and unloading ships at Guadalcanal, it was soon time to enter the fighting. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Bourgault gives an unvarnished look at basic training and how it prepared new Marines for war. He also describes a Japanese torpedo attack at Guadalcanal. From there, he takes into the combat on Bougainville, where Bourgault and many others fought both the Japanese and tropical ailments.Bourgault then shares his vivid memories of the difficulties in getting onto the beach at Iwo Jima, what he saw there, and being medicially evacuated a short time later. He also remembers seeing the U.S. flag atop Mt. Suribachi and what it was like to hear the war had ended several months later.Lastly, Mr. Bourgault shares how much it means to him that so many Americans make a point of thanking him for his service.

The production of "Full Metal Jacket" (1987), directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, was a painstakingly detailed and immersive experience that exemplified the director's penchant for perfectionism. Kubrick's approach to creating the gritty world of the Vietnam War was nothing short of meticulous. One of the standout aspects of the production was the casting and training of the actors. Kubrick sought out actors who could fully embody their roles, and this included intense auditions and physical transformations. Vincent D'Onofrio, who portrayed the troubled Private Pyle, famously gained a significant amount of weight for his character, while the entire cast underwent boot camp-style military training to convincingly portray soldiers. This immersive preparation allowed the actors to inhabit their roles with an authenticity that shines through in the film. Another hallmark of the production was Kubrick's dedication to creating authentic settings. The film was shot in real-world locations, including England and London's former Beckton Gas Works, which were transformed into war-torn Vietnamese landscapes. The attention to detail was remarkable, from the realistic military equipment and uniforms to the hand-painted "Born to Kill" helmet worn by Private Joker, played by Matthew Modine. Kubrick's insistence on practical effects and his willingness to take the time necessary to achieve his vision contributed to the film's raw and uncompromising portrayal of the Vietnam War. The result was a cinematic masterpiece that continues to be celebrated for its realism and artistry. The first part unfolds in a U.S. Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. Here, the audience is introduced to a group of young recruits undergoing brutal training under the iron fist of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey). The recruits, including the cynical and quick-witted Private Joker (Matthew Modine) and the struggling and mentally unstable Private Pyle (Vincent D'Onofrio), endure physical and psychological torment as they are molded into efficient killing machines. This part of the film delves deep into the dehumanizing effects of military training, emphasizing the loss of individuality and the emergence of a collective soldier identity. The second part of the film takes place in the heart of the Vietnam War itself. Joker, now a war correspondent, and his fellow Marines are thrust into the brutal and chaotic urban warfare of the Tet Offensive. They navigate the horrors of battle, facing a relentless enemy and witnessing the profound psychological toll the war takes on both their comrades and themselves. Joker's journey culminates in a chilling confrontation with a deadly sniper, a moment that forces him to confront the moral complexities of war and the duality of human nature. "Full Metal Jacket" is a searing exploration of the dehumanization and psychological trauma inflicted by war, as well as an examination of the blurred lines between humanity and inhumanity in the crucible of combat. Kubrick's meticulous direction and the outstanding performances of the cast make it a haunting and enduring portrayal of the Vietnam War experience. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

In a world where justice and accountability are often considered two sides of the same coin, a bewildering case from South Carolina challenges our shared sense of what these terms mean. The matter in question involves the tragic February 2019 boat crash, allegedly caused by Alex Murdaugh's son Paul, that led to the death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach and injured several others. In an unexpected twist, the $15 million settlement reportedly reached in the lawsuits that arose from this horrific event now poses questions about who is truly bearing the cost of these legal settlements. Alex Murdaugh, the infamous South Carolina attorney, found himself at the center of a tangled web of litigation following the boat accident near Parris Island. As per local news reports, most of the settlement sum is intended for Beach's family, whose lives have been irrevocably altered by this tragedy. Remarkably, others on the boat at the time of the crash, all passengers who survived the calamity, joined forces with Beach's relatives to launch their lawsuits. What's peculiar is that the legal action was not solely directed at Murdaugh because he owned the boat. Parker's, a store where Paul Murdaugh, underage at the time, allegedly purchased alcohol using a fake ID before the crash, was also targeted in the lawsuits. This highlights the extent of accountability that retailers are expected to bear when minors manage to acquire their products unlawfully. Mark Tinsley, the attorney representing the Beach family, provided a statement in which he underlined this responsibility. He argued that this settlement should serve as a stern warning to all retailers who may contemplate or unwittingly facilitate the illegal sale of alcohol to a minor. The stakes are high, and they will be held accountable for any resulting misconduct. As the dust begins to settle, an unsettling detail emerges. The legal teams for Parker's suggested that the insurers opt for settlement instead of a trial. It was feared that Alex Murdaugh's notoriety, following his conviction for the June 2021 murders of his wife, Margaret, and son Paul, might lead to a more considerable award if the case proceeded to trial. A chilling realization of how a case as convoluted as this one can be influenced by external factors, such as the public perception of a central figure like Murdaugh. For context, Paul Murdaugh was seen in a store security video buying alcohol the night of the accident. He was only 19 and not legally allowed to purchase alcohol, leading investigators to believe he used his older brother's ID for the transaction. That fateful night, he reportedly drank with his friends, including Mallory Beach, before taking them on a fatal ride in his father's boat, ultimately leading to the tragic accident. In the aftermath of the boat crash, Paul Murdaugh faced legal proceedings for Beach's death, during which he was out on bail. However, his life and his mother's were abruptly cut short in a shocking murder incident at their family home. In a twist of events that seems lifted from the pages of a gripping crime novel, Alex Murdaugh was convicted of the murders of his wife and son in March. Prosecutors argued that he orchestrated the killings as a diversionary tactic after being caught stealing millions from his law firm. This intricate plot is now the subject of documentaries on HBO and Netflix. In this case, the absurdity of who will bear the settlement costs underscores the convoluted nature of accountability in our legal system. A system that, in its quest for justice, sometimes raises more questions than it answers. . Want to listen to ALL our Podcasts AD-FREE? USMC Veteran Lucas Gage discusses joining the marines after 9/11 and then becoming disillusioned with the GWOT, Military-Industrial-Complex, and American Empire. U.S. Empire or neoliberal globalism has basically taken over the planet with cultural, financial, and military conquest, but it's stretching itself thin and the world's getting sick of it. The U.S. has put Ukraine on a suicide mission and doesn't' give a damn about the country. The American political elite are keeping the nation divided (e.g. race, vaxxed, gender) as they pillage the country. American under Biden looks weak and WW3 is not impossible. He gives some tips on activism and planting seeds of peace and truth. After I saw the 9/11 attacks live on television, I signed up for the Marine Corps. Four days after my high school graduation, I went straight to boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. I endured three months of hell, but graduated as a United States Marine. During my service, I was deployed twice to Iraq: Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, and Operation Enduring Freedom in 2004. I was honorably discharged as a corporal after four years of service. But my return to civilian life would prove to be difficult. Within months of being home, I began to experience symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This affected my personal relationships and several other facets of my life. Trying to find out how to fix what was wrong with me, I stumbled upon neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). I found the subject interesting and decided to become an NLP practitioner. After two years of study, I graduated from the Center for Positive Change and Hypnosis in New York. NLP helped me greatly with my personal challenges, and so I wanted to help others with theirs. I started a life-coaching business, and helped a few clients, but it didn't last long, thanks to my PTSD. I was very angry and resentful at this time. I really hated how corrupt the system was, and it drove me into politics. Becoming an anti-war activist, I spent many years exposing the warmongers and corrupt traitors in our government. But after years of activism, I only made a small dent in the narrative, and the stress and anxiety trying to “wake” everyone up, only made my PTSD worse. Still trying to heal myself, I stumbled upon the works of Marcus Aurelius, Alan Watts, and Lao Tzu. Their teachings led me down a spiritual path that changed my life. The combination of NLP, reading their work, and practicing meditation, led me to have a spiritual epiphany. This caused me to abandon my belief system and transcend identity politics completely. I decided to quit politics and get back what I originally wanted to do: writing, philosophy, and life coaching. *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra Viols": http://musicke-mirth.
