We're flipping tables AND roles over here for this one! That's right, Mogab's telling the story this time! For this episode, Mogab tells Kristin about the murder of Marion Miley in 1941. 27 year old Marion was an amateur golfer, busy winning championships and awards as a woman in a very male dominated sport (and time period) when she and her mother, Elsa, were brutally murdered at the country club they lived in in Lexington, Kentucky. This whodunnit had Kristin on the edge of her seat! Originally released as a mini creep on our Patreon, we thought this episode deserved its day in the spotlight. Learn more about your ad choices. In the 1930's and 1940's, when women's amateur golf was the premiere women's golf circuit, some players became stars. One was Marion Miley, who won just about every major amateur event available to her. But her career came to a tragic end in the middle of the night in the Lexington Country Club apartments where she lived with her mother. In the decades that followed, Marion's story has been forgotten. Keely Levins dives into Marion's story and how author Beverly Bell set out to ensure Marion's story would be remembered forever.
Beverly Bell is the author of “The Murder of Marion Miley.” In 2020 the book was a finalist for the USGA Herbert Warren Wind book award. The story itself was lost in history, as Miley's murder was washed from the front pages when Pearl Harbor was attacked and World War II stole everyone's attention. Miley was an exceptional amateur golfer. From 1931 to the murder in 1941, she won 20 amateur events including the Kentucky Amateur seven times in eight years. Women's amateur golf in the 1930s filled a void left by Bobby Jones. Players like Patty Berg and Babe Didrikson battled Miley for supremacy on the course and they garnered attention and headlines for their play and style. Miley's fame put her into the stratosphere of Bing Crosby, who it is believed put up an award for capturing the men who killed Marion and her mother on that fateful night in September 1941.During our discussion. Beverly Bell and I speak about how she found the story, the research that went into writing the book, anecdotes and stories that she had to leave out, and we even do a little Hollywood casting in case this incredible story ever makes it to the big screen. This discussion with Bell feels quite timely given the Augusta National Women's Amateur is being held this week. A celebration of women's amateur golf, something that Marion Miley brought to the forefront during a dominant decade competition both in the United States and abroad in Great Britain.___________AMATEUR GOLF LINKSAmateurgolf.comAmateur Golf on IGAmateur Golf on Twitter____________BEVERLY BELL LINKSPurchase: Murder of Marion MileyInstagramTwitter

March 22, 2021 - If you don't know the name Marion Miley, then prepare to meet someone you'll never forget. The young golfer had it all: brains, power, beauty, and a winning personality. It seemed only a matter of time before this 27-year-old phenom earned immortality on the links with a national championship. But fate had other plans. Three burglars cut Marion's life short in a botched robbery, just weeks before Pearl Harbor plunged the nation into war. With a war to fight and millions being killed, the death of even a beloved athlete quickly fell from the world's thoughts. Beverly Bell returns Marion Miley to her rightful spot as an inspiration in her meticulously researched novel about the forgotten tragedy, The Murder of Marion Miley -- a finalist for the 2020 U.S. Golf Association Herbert Warren Wind Book Award, the highest literary honor given by the USGA. It describes in vivid detail the young athlete who enchanted fans in Lexington, Kentucky, and the world over, who desperately needed some good news amid the troubles of the Great Depression. The book explores not just Marion's death, but the manhunt and trial to bring her killers to justice. Beverly Bell is an award-winning magazine and crime writer. Visit her at BeverlyKBell.com.

Mariam and Beverly discuss Beverly’s recent book, The Murder of Marion Miley.
Hour 2: Dick and Billy speak with Dale Wellman, one of the best D III coaches in the US, and author Beverly Bell about her new book "The Murder of Marion Miley."
Who doesn’t love a good true crime novel? Especially one about a notorious murder case here in Lexington? Golfer Marion Miley was on top of the world in the late 1930’s, winning nearly every prestigious tournament and becoming the darling of the sports world and the celebrity set. That all ended abruptly on the night of September 28, 1941 with her brutal murder at the Lexington Country Club. Author Beverly Bell explores the life and times of the female sports star and shines new light on her untimely death…still one of the most vexing cases in our city’s history. She talks with WUKY's Alan Lytle about her journey writing “ The Murder of Marion Miley ” published by the University Press of Kentucky.
While in her 20's, Marion Miley was already a golf legend. Between 1931 and 1938, she won six Kentucky Women’s Amateur events. She also won many of the nations premier amateur events for women. Among her wins were two Trans Championships, two Women’s Southerns, two Women’s Weston Amateurs, two Western Derby titles and the Augusta Invitational. She also had made two of the prestigious Curtis Cup teams. While women’s amateur golf was in its glory days, as the Ladies Professional Golf Association had not yet evolved, golf offered little financially when it came to the future for women.Marion Miley, however, was making it in spite of the country being bogged down in Depression. Often described as photogenic, she made for good interviews and as a result she was seen in newspapers and movie theater newsreels. Standard Oil of Kentucky took advantage of her celebrity and hired her to travel about and inspect their service stations. She had only started to parlay her talents that exceeded her golf. She was in the company of Bob Hope, Clark Gable and Bing Crosby, playing in more than 100 charity events, and her distance off the tee made her even more popular. She could hit the ball further than Hall of Famer Patty Berg, and during a driving contest at one of the tournaments outdistanced 1932 Olympic champion Babe Didrickson. Marion Milet was murdered in a botched robbery attempt at the Lexington Country Club in Lexington Kentucky. Our guest this week is Beverley Bell who has just published the definitive work on The Murder Of Marion Miley.
