In this episode of Raising Boys and Girls, it features Sissy Goff and David Thomas in an in-person conversation with author and Duke professor Kate Bowler about her newest book, Joyful Anyway. Kate unpacks the difference between happiness (built from luck and circumstance) and joy (a surprising, embodied experience that can coexist with grief and hardship), drawing on her own journey through stage four cancer. She talks about letting go of the "professional happiness manager" role in parenting, how to be honest with kids about grief without burdening them, and how relinquishing control can open people up to deeper love and connection. Grief can look very different in children than it does in adults. In this episode, Sissy Goff and David Thomas share five important ways kids process loss: in small doses, in the middle of everyday life, through emotions connected to secondary losses, through play, and in new ways as they grow and develop. They encourage parents to follow their child's lead, offer language when grief unexpectedly surfaces, and remember that there is no “right” timetable or expression of grief. Rather than trying to make children grieve like adults, caregivers can remain close, make room for remembering, and reassure kids that they never have to walk through loss alone. After 10 years of motherhood, I'm really glad I did some things in those first few weeks, and plenty I'd do completely differently.Nothing can quite prepare you for becoming a mother. Those early weeks can be full of love and joy while also feeling exhausting, overwhelming and completely identity-shifting. I certainly wasn't prepared for the emotional whiplash of holding all of those feelings at once.In this special episode, created in partnership with Tesco Fred & Flo, I'm looking back at my first experience of new motherhood and sharing what I got right, what I learnt the hard way and what I wish I'd known before having a baby.We talk about setting boundaries with visitors (including my one rule that I still think was genius!), why new mothers need care rather than being expected to host, and the huge identity shift of matrescence that I knew absolutely nothing about when I had my first daughter.I also share how the mental load began creeping into my relationship almost without us noticing, and the practical change my husband, Guy, and I made to create a more equal division of parenting and household responsibilities. Plus, I share the newborn essentials I genuinely found useful, what I spent time and money on that I probably wouldn't again, and some very practical tips for making those sleep-deprived early weeks a little easier.Because when you're adjusting to life with a new baby, recovering from birth and trying to work out who you are now, the last thing you need is more pressure.
Ginny Yurich, founder of 1000 Hours Outside, joins Sissy and David to explore how outdoor play, movement, and hands-on experiences prepare children to learn and grow. She shares how homeschooling has shaped her understanding of education, emphasizing that children learn constantly through their interests, relationships, everyday responsibilities, and time in nature. Ginny also explains how outdoor play builds problem-solving skills, agency, confidence, and the ability to assess healthy risks. In a rapidly changing, technology-driven world, she encourages parents to focus less on performance and more on developing distinctly human strengths such as creativity, empathy, communication, practical skills, and meaningful relationships. Parent-teacher conferences can feel stressful for parents, but Sissy Goff and David Thomas encourage families to approach them as opportunities to build a supportive team around their child. They share practical ways to create a spirit of partnership with teachers, receive honest feedback without becoming defensive, and look beyond grades to understand how a child is growing academically, emotionally, and socially. They also remind parents to focus on a few meaningful next steps, involve children in solving problems, and recognize where stepping back may allow kids to develop greater independence, responsibility, and confidence. Suggested parent-teacher conference questions: How can I support what you're doing at school from home? Is there anything you see at school that we might not be seeing at home? Where do you see capability in my child that they might not see yet? Where could we give our child more responsibility? What are two things we could work on at home right now? . . . . . . For nearly a decade, Sandra endured a relentless cycle of abuse, control, and stalking. Every time she tried to leave, the behavior escalated—relentless calls and messages, unexpected appearances, online harassment, and the terrifying feeling that somehow, he always knew where she was and what she was doing. Even after she turned to police and the courts for protection, the stalking continued, leaving Sandra fighting to escape a cycle that seemed impossible to end. On today's solo episode, I'm sharing my positive birth story and taking you through my journey. I dive into how I prepared for labor, why I chose to keep an open mind rather than create a strict birth plan, and the role my doula, midwife, and birth team played throughout the process. I also share what labor actually felt like, how quickly everything progressed, what helped me get through the most intense moments, and the moment I finally met my baby girl, Reign. We also talk about the mindset shift that helped me approach pregnancy and birth with more confidence, why surrounding yourself with positive stories can make such a difference, and the lessons I learned about trusting your body, letting go of control, and expecting good things. If you're pregnant, preparing for birth, or simply curious about what my experience was like, this episode is for you. As kids head back to school, Sissy Goff and David Thomas share five practical ways parents can help them navigate the big emotions that often come with transition. They encourage parents to expect heightened feelings, lend kids their confidence, let feelings “ride but not drive,” protect margin for rest, and help kids collect evidence of their own capability. With simple scripts and questions parents can use at home, Sissy and David remind us that the goal isn't for kids to become fearless—it's for them to learn that they can feel nervous, overwhelmed, or uncertain and still move forward. Welcome back to Dadville! Today, we're sitting down with our incredibly learned friend, Ian Morgan Cron. We usually try to keep things light and funny, but Ian brought some serious "strings on the bridge" energy to this one. As an author, psychotherapist, former priest, and Dove Award-winning songwriter, he's basically a vocational tossed salad. We dive deep into his complicated childhood with an alcoholic father, how we all inevitably screw up our kids, and why we need to let everyone—and ourselves—out of the penalty box. Jon got to geek out over being a fellow Enneagram Four, and Dave sat up a little straighter to show off his youthful "vigor". Truly, Ian reminded us that we're just growing up alongside our kids, and that at the end of the day, we're in good hands. Enjoy this episode with the lovely man of permission himself! Three people disappeared under circumstances no one has ever explained. A man runs out of a Bulgarian airport and vanishes into a field of sunflowers, leaving his passport and phone behind. A young woman survives a car crash on a dark New Hampshire road, then disappears in the nineteen minutes it takes police to arrive. A fourteen-year-old boy plans a trip to London down to the smallest detail, then walks out of a train station and is never seen again. These cases span three countries and three decades, but they share the same unsettling gap: a clear trail right up until the moment each person disappeared, and nothing after. We lay out exactly what happened, minute by minute, and the questions that still don't add up. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Sissy Goff and David Thomas sit down with Lysa TerKeurst for a meaningful conversation about making peace with what we can't control—especially as parents. Lysa shares what she's learned through raising five children, walking through divorce, and now becoming a grandmother, including the importance of keeping kids talking, releasing the need to control outcomes, and allowing children to experience consequences and build resilience. She reminds parents that their children's mistakes don't define their parenting and encourages families to create a strong sense of belonging, pursue their own growth, and trust God with what they ultimately cannot control. Mike emailed asking about typical exclusions or pre-existing concerns with LTC insurance. LTC insurance is governed by Internal revenue Code (IRC) 7702(b). To be able to offer insurance, companies must adhere to this rule. American Association for LTC insurance (AALTCi) has many resources available on this https://www.aaltci.org/long-term-care-insurance/ You can view both current and projected costs of care where you live at https://www.carescout.com/cost-of-care I strongly suggest using a 4 or 5% cost of living factor when checking future costs. I think we'd be lying to ourselves if we believe the costs of care will be lower than that in the future. Baby Boomers are starting to turn 80 this year. Stassi and Taylor start off strong by diving deep into some reality TV criticism! First up: Taylor addresses the diabolical rumor that she forced her wife's name change for the show. Stassi makes peace with being fundamentally misunderstood on TV. The duo unpack modern parenting dynamics and the unfair double standards moms face.An astrological storm is brewin'—including a total solar eclipse, a six-planet alignment, and the tail end of the Lion's Gate portal. Stassi and Taylor review their past manifestation journals to see what actually came true (shoutout to sleep-trained babies and 12-episode seasons!). Lastly, Stassi plans her end of summer Europe trip to emerge just in time for spooky season, while Taylor prepares for a first-time trip away from the baby to live it up at a Backstreet Boys concert in Vegas. As kids head back to school, friendships can bring just as much anxiety as academics. In this episode, Sissy Goff and David Thomas share five practical ways parents can help kids build social confidence: practice the first few minutes of the day, teach kids to notice others, give them simple conversation starters, allow friendships time to grow, and celebrate courage instead of popularity. They remind parents that friendship is a skill that develops through practice, small risks, repeated interactions, and plenty of imperfect moments along the way. We've officially lost control of the microphones. Welcome to a special episode of Dadville—or as our daughters Zanna and Liv have rebranded it, Kidville. We thought we were the consummate podcasters, but the girls immediately put us in the hot seat to expose our deepest, most embarrassing secrets. We're talking about Dave pre-unwrapping a pocketful of Jolly Ranchers during church hymns so they don't crackle, and our classic grocery store panic calls because we can't find the basil. Nothing was safe—from Ringo Starr's lack of outfit "curb appeal" to the time Ireland's Starbucks cold foam tasted exactly like cardboard. They even recap Liv's legendary Shake Shack sprint in Chicago and grill us on our favorite child. Please listen to this chaotic takeover, buy their upcoming merchandise, and cast Zanna in a movie because she's officially "nice and famous"! We've recently shared the stories of Jennifer and Johanna, two nannies who described being stalked and harassed by the same woman after crossing paths with a nanny agency. They believed they were isolated cases, until they found each other. Today we're speaking with Jeny, another nanny who says she became a target of the same woman — except Jeny never worked with the agency or even met her stalker. She simply asked around about the agency, heard concerning information, and decided not to pursue it. But somehow, that was enough. What followed was the same disturbing pattern of relentless messages, accusations, intimidation, and attempts to damage her reputation. Melanie Shankle and Sophie Hudson join David and Sissy for a funny, honest conversation about raising capable kids without giving in to pressure, perfectionism, or the urge to rescue them from every hard moment. Drawing from their friendship and experiences parenting young adults, they discuss the importance of allowing kids to fail, advocate for themselves, handle responsibilities, and develop confidence in their own decision-making. They also share how laughter creates perspective and strengthens family relationships, making room for both lighthearted moments and harder conversations. Melanie and Sophie encourage parents to know their individual child, model an authentic faith, apologize when they get things wrong, and remember that struggles are often what help kids develop resilience and make their faith their own. Fresh off their House of Stassi press tour in NYC, Stassi and Taylor are back to recap the diabolical schedule and the intense realities of success. They break down why they are actively avoiding the comment section and Stassi shares a vulnerable voice memo she sent to the group chat. Stassi also has a bone to pick with JetBlue's questionable new menu options involving trout tartine and zucchini fritattas. They get fully fired up over SUR goat cheese balls, clear up internet rumors about Taylor's parenting timeline, and debate the color palette of the calendar year (apologies to the month of March). They wrap up with a kids' card game that quickly turns into a breakdown of their sophisticated death row meals, travel fantasies, and then get completely honest about the separation anxiety of traveling without their kids. Thanks for supporting our sponsors:Amazon Music: Your one app for music, podcasts, and audiobooks — Amazon Music Unlimited subscription now includes access to audiobooksBoll and Branch: For a limited time, get 15% off sitewide at BollAndBranch.com/stassi with code Stassi. As the new school year approaches, Sissy Goff and David Thomas help parents understand why transitions can bring big feelings, physical symptoms, and anxious thoughts for both kids and adults. They share an easy-to-remember “A+ Anxiety Plan”: anticipate anxiety, create an action plan, avoid avoidance, act it out through practice, and affirm courage. With practical scripts and strategies for navigating school drop-off, social situations, and after-school conversations, Sissy and David encourage parents to help kids take small, brave steps and collect evidence that they are capable of handling hard things. In this episode, the fellas welcome financial expert Rachel Cruze to discuss the intersection of money, mindset, and family. As the daughter of Dave Ramsey, Cruze shares insights on growing up with a "money guy" and how she has carved her own path through best-selling books and speaking. Rachel talks about how money is less about math and more about behaviour, focusing on intentional parenting through "commissions" rather than allowances and the "half-car rule". The trio delves into the struggle of navigating social media pressure and defining a family's financial "baseline" in a world of "infinity pools". Cruze also provides tactical advice for marriages, urging couples to align on shared goals and use budgeting to find permission to spend. This deep dive offers a roadmap for families to build a legacy of contentment and financial peace. Dr. Dale Atkins joins David and Sissy to explore how speed, chronic stress, digital distraction, and intensive parenting are reshaping family relationships and contributing to a crisis of capability in kids. She shares practical wisdom for building stronger connections across generations, including listening without becoming defensive, respecting adult children as independent people, offering guidance without taking over, and staying curious when experiences or memories differ. The conversation also highlights the importance of unstructured family time, emotional safety, intergenerational relationships, and modeling kindness through small, everyday actions. Friendships are where kids practice being human, but social anxiety, screens, group dynamics, and “rollercoaster” relationships are making connection harder than ever. Sissy and David offer practical ways parents can help kids recognize healthy friendships, develop realistic expectations, practice conversation and initiation, understand reciprocity, set kind boundaries, and navigate awkward moments. Rather than managing every relationship, parents can coach kids to find good friends, have a “good picker,” and become the kind of friend they hope to have. In this episode, the fellas sit down with Charlie Worsham, the CMA's reigning Musician of the Year and a true "multihyphenate" talent. Charlie shares his incredible trajectory, from winning national banjo titles at age 12 to playing in the bands of legends like Vince Gill. He dives deep into his "13-year-old self rule," a mental practice that helps him maintain gratitude for his career, even on the hardest days. The trio then chats about the "hard shift" of returning home from the road and the intentional ways he is showing up for his children through heartfelt journaling and obsessive financial planning. Whether discussing his new independent record, Once Upon a Second Time Around, or the sociology of corporate gigs, Charlie offers a masterclass in humility, resilience, and the pursuit of a meaningful musical community. On a recent episode of Strictly Stalking, we shared Jennifer's story—a nanny who became the target of stalking and harassment connected to a nanny agency. Since then, more women have come forward, describing eerily similar experiences involving the same person. Today, we're speaking with Johanna, another nanny who says she became caught in the same disturbing pattern of harassment and stalking. Taylor is diet posting from the Hamptons while Stassi admires (from a distance) the Wine Bar at her local Gelson's grocery store. It's a battle for who deserves the Loser Crown, from Taylor's fillet comment to Danny DeVito at a steakhouse, to Stassi's cringe-worthy DM to director Jon M. Chu. They also share their most interesting experiences with other Hollywood actors, and debate whether they could drink Taylor Swift under the table. Finally, Stassi asks Taylor for advice on a current dilemma. Her 20th high school reunion is around the corner. Should Stassi show up fully glammed to inspire the youths, or is walking down those halls just asking for trouble? Thanks for supporting our sponsors:Boll and Branch: For a limited time, get 15% off sitewide at BollAndBranch.com/stassi with code Stassi.
