Glenn Danzig named his punk band after one of the most cursed Hollywood films of all time. The Misfits was where actor Montgomery Clift, permanently disfigured from a car accident, tried in vain to restart his stalled career. The director, John Huston, lost the film's entire production budget at a craps table. The lead actor, Clark Gable, suffered a heart attack the day after shooting ended and died ten days later. But was there any truth to the rumor that Gable was driven to an early grave not because of a grueling shoot or poor health, but by his demanding co-star, Marilyn Monroe? Mel Gibson, Mutiny on the Bounty, and historical accuracy take center stage in this episode of Hugging the Cactus: A Mel Gibson Podcast. Join us as we dive into the 1984 film The Bounty, directed by Roger Donaldson, featuring an all-star cast including Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Day-Lewis, Liam Neeson, and Laurence Olivier. We explore the real-life mutiny that inspired this cinematic retelling, the troubled production history (including developmental hell, budget woes, and Mel Gibson's bar fights), and how it stacks up against earlier versions like the 1935 Clark Gable classic and the 1962 Marlon Brando film. From Robert Bolt's screenplay to Vangelis' soundtrack and Arthur Ibbetson's cinematography, we unpack why this historically accurate take didn't resonate with audiences or awards, despite its stunning visuals and epic scope. Was it the lack of a sequel, bad timing, or simply an unremakeable classic? Stick around for the full story of Fletcher Christian, Lieutenant Bligh, and a ship that changed naval history forever.

There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. Stretching across eight states, this iconic road has been the setting for countless ghost stories, eerie legends, and unexplained phenomena. Travelers venturing down Route 66 have reported ghostly hitchhikers, abandoned towns frozen in time, and roadside motels where spectral figures linger long after check-out. Could the highway itself be haunted? Some believe that the long, lonely stretches of road, once bustling with life, now carry the echoes of the past—spirits forever trapped along America's most famous highway.   Jennifer and Joe explore some of the most infamous haunted locations along Route 66, starting with the legendary Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, often dubbed "America's Most Haunted Hotel." Guests have reported apparitions, disembodied voices, and even ghostly hands touching them in the night. Moving westward, they delve into the eerie tales surrounding the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, New Mexico, a favorite stop for Hollywood stars in its heyday, now said to be haunted by restless spirits of guests who never left. Then, there's the Oatman Hotel in Arizona, where the ghost of Clark Gable's late wife, Carole Lombard, is said to roam the halls, and where phantom laughter is often heard in empty rooms.   But it's not just hotels—Route 66 is dotted with ghost towns, abandoned buildings, and spectral roadways where the past refuses to be forgotten. The abandoned town of Texola, Oklahoma, once a thriving community, now stands eerily quiet, save for reports of shadowy figures moving through the crumbling structures. In Missouri, the Tri-County Truck Stop has gained a reputation as a paranormal hotspot, with former employees and visitors claiming to see ghostly figures walking through the empty diner late at night. And in Illinois, the Cahokia Mounds, an ancient Native American site just off Route 66, carries an air of mystery and supernatural energy, with visitors experiencing strange whispers and unexplained lights.   As Jennifer and Joe uncover these chilling stories, they ask—could Route 66 be more than just a road? Could it be a supernatural highway, where spirits roam and the past refuses to fade? Tune in as they share spine-tingling encounters, discuss the history behind these haunted places, and invite listeners to share their own ghostly experiences from the road. If you dare to travel Route 66, be prepared—you might just bring back more than memories.   Welcome to the 222 Paranormal Podcast, your gateway to the captivating world of the supernatural. An episode that Anne'-swers all your questions! Here's what's in store for today's episode: * We kick off this episode by diving into autism misdiagnoses and the controversy surrounding Kanye West.* We explore how neurotypical stigmas surrounding autism contribute to misdiagnoses, leading to misunderstandings, overlooked diagnoses, and incorrect labels that impact autistic individuals' lives.* Autistic people are often the best at recognizing and diagnosing other autistic people—real recognize real.* We then dive into the heart of our episode—Anne of Green Gables—and explore how this beloved story is delightfully autistic in all the best ways.* Anne, our protagonist, is the quintessential outsider—she doesn't fit in and doesn't care to. Sound familiar?* Anne Shirley is constantly told she's 'too much'—too talkative, too dramatic, too imaginative, and always just a little outside the norm* The original Anne of Green Gables was written in 1908, during the Industrial Revolution—an era of chaotic transition for many, including autistic individuals, who were beginning to adjust to life in a rapidly changing capitalist society.* A lot of autistic people are drawn to turn-of-the-century fiction, like Anne of Green Gables or Little House on the Prairie, because it evokes a time when life felt less complex and the world seemed more predictable.* Anne Shirley is an orphan, and many autistic people can relate to that feeling of being an outsider or disconnected, much like the concept of Wrong Planet Syndrome that Angela discusses—where autistic individuals feel as though they're from a different world entirely.* The book experienced massive critical and commercial success over the years, spawning sequels, a Disney movie, an anime adaptation, and more.* Anne of Green Gables holds a huge cultural impact and status in Japan, a country that embodies many facets of autistic culture, from its deep appreciation for routine and order to its rich traditions of storytelling and introspection.* We discuss Anne's author, Lucy Maud Montgomery, and how she based the character of Anne on her own life, highlighting the autistic-coded traits that are reflected in Anne's personality and experiences.* In addition, we also analyze some of Anne's inherently autistic traits, like her use of echolalia, infodumping, and her intense "spins"—those passionate, often over-the-top moments where she loses herself in her thoughts and imagination.* Matt and Angela dive into the concept of internalized ableism, exploring how it often takes significantly more effort and output for autistic people to achieve success, as they navigate societal expectations that aren't built for neurodivergent minds.* We discuss how unschooling often gets bad PR, while also examining how factory schools were created during the Industrial Revolution to train students to work for 8 hours a day in factories, shaping the education system we know today.* Next, we explore the neurodivergent friendship dynamics in the series, such as the unique bond between Anne and Gilbert, which is built on an intellectual connection with little to no small talk, showcasing other neurodivergent tendencies like deep, focused conversation and mutual understanding.* Additionally, talk about the importance of echolalia and neurodivergent-coded language processing in Anne's character and how it shapes her communication style.* Autistic people have a different structure of language; we use the same words but approach concepts in unique ways. When we communicate with other autistic people, there's a shared understanding that transcends typical language norms.* We talk about Anne's physical stimming and how people in her town of Avonlea were not pleased with it, often misunderstanding or criticizing her behavior.* Anne has sensory issues aplenty, including ones that influence her choice of dress and what she wears, highlighting her sensitivity to certain fabrics and styles.* Finally, we touch on how Anne struggles with masking and is constantly pressured to fit in, highlighting the challenges of trying to conform to societal expectations while staying true to herself.“This is the thing - the people who are good at diagnosing autism might not be as neurotypical as they think they are. The neurotypicals tend to be very bad at diagnosing autism.” - Matt“When I picture Anne of Green Gables, I picture her surrounded by Kermit the Frog dressed as Clark Gable.” - Matt“It's all very well to read about sorrows and imagine yourself living through them heroically - but it's not so nice when you really come to have them, is it?” - Anne Shirley“There's such a lot of different ands in me. I sometimes think that is why I'm such a troublesome person.” - Anne Shirley“I have always lived in a world of imagination; I kept it shut up within myself for fear of ridicule.” - Lucy Maud Montgomery“This is why we get thrown into ‘social skills groups' and ‘social skills training' - because neurotypicals want us to be like them instead of acknowledging that we are different and accepting our differences because it's colonization b******t.” - MattDid you enjoy this episode? We dive into the neurodivergent themes in Anne of Green Gables, exploring Anne's traits, sensory issues, and the challenges she faces in Avonlea. Bridgeport's walking and hiking trails offer scenic views and convenient access across the city. The city's trail systems are widely used by locals, according to Joe Shuttleworth, director of Bridgeport Parks and Recreation. Shuttleworth highlighted the appeal of the trails at Deegan and Hinkle Lakes Park, noting their scenic beauty and shaded paths, which provide comfort during the summer months. The campus of The Bridge Sports Complex also features a fully off-road trail. Development plans include additional trails once two new fields at the complex are completed. Plans are underway to enhance the city's trail systems, Shuttleworth added. Facing shortages during the war, Congress passed an act to aid the construction of three new gunpowder plants. Looking for places that had a favorable climate, raw materials, easy access to transportation and was safe from coastal attacks, engineers with the DuPont Company selected the area that would become Nitro. Hercules Powder initiated the groundbreaking for the Nitro chemical plant, called Explosives Plant C, at the site of present day Nitro City Park on December 23, 1917. The facility itself would be capable of producing around 700,000 pounds of gunpowder. Around 110,000 people were on the payroll during the plant's eleven month construction period. Those working on the project included future movie star Clark Gable and future baseball star Pie Traynor. Esperanza and Irwin have a story to tell. As scandalous ancestors go, Col. Henry Huddleston Rogers II would have been enough for most families. But then he had a daughter. The colonel's namesake father, a partner in Standard Oil and noted “robber baron” of the Gilded Age, was one of the wealthiest men of his day. Amassing an estimated $100 million fortune, Rogers senior also acquired the nickname“Hell Hound” for his rapacious ways. It was meant as a compliment. Alas, young Harry was spoiled by his father's money. As he aged into adulthood, after receiving his inheritance in 1910, various sources describe him as ruthless, or a bully, or a ruthless bully. In 1914 he used some of the money to build Black Point, the family's summer estate inSouthampton, also known as the “Beach House,” adding a hunting lodge in nearby North Sea in the 1920s. The colonel commissioned John Russell Pope*, the architect responsible for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., to design his shooting box overlooking Scallop Pond. The Sag Harbor Express reported that, at the time, it “encompassed 2,000 acres on both sides of the pond and was the largest privately-owned estate on Long Island.” By all accounts, the Port of Missing Men (as it was dubbed) offered the proverbial good time that was had by all. One rumor is that he had duck blinds installed on the water that were wired directly to Wall Street. The colonel's guests were able to remain unreachable to their wives but connected to the trading floor. Meanwhile, during Prohibition, there was a major liquor drop-off point conveniently close by, at the end of North Sea Road. Later, the drop-off point would become a notorious cathouse. The colonel and his wife, the former Mary Benjamin, had a daughter in 1902: Mary Millicent Abigail Rogers. The artistically inclined Millicent would go on to run through three husbands, plus Clark Gable. In 2011, her rich life became the subject of a biography, Searching for Beauty: The Life of Millicent Rogers, the American Heiress Who Taught the World About Style, by Cherie Burns. While we work on some brand-new episodes of Even the Royals, we're bringing back one of our first - and one of our favorite - Royals. Grace Kelly was a Hollywood icon in the 1950s. She worked with legends like Clark Gable and Alfred Hitchcock and only left when it was time to marry a real-life prince. She seemed to live the ultimately fairy tale life, but it came at a price – she fit herself into the box of perfection only to find herself trapped there. In part one of this two-part series Grace is a young girl in an unloving family who dreams of being a star. But Tinseltown demands the best, so if Grace wants leading roles – and an Oscar – she'll have to turn herself into a flawless leading lady. Frank Capra's It Happened One Night.  This film is one of only three films to home the Big 5 on Oscar night (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay).  So many great scenes, great lines, wonderful direction, and incredible performances by Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert make this movie a true gem of cinema.  After 90 years, does this film still stand the test of time?  In hindsight, should it still be regarded as the best of 1934?Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on it as he analyzes everything about It Happened One Night, as well as many other films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 1934.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching  Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHear RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, BlueSkyShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating.  It helps our podcast continue to reach many people and make it available to share more episodes with everyone.Send us a text

In the finale episode of our series on Marilyn Monroe, we take a look at her final years, her final movies, and what led up to her untimely death. Like most of her life, her final years weren't easy, and though she did get the chance to co-star with her childhood hero, Clark Gable, in her final completed movie, she was highly distraught when she learned that the press was falsely implying that she was somehow partly to blame for his death. Addiction to prescription pills and thoughts of taking her own life would increase over time, eventually landing her in a mental institution, then being placed in the care of new therapist whose experimental methods did nothing to aid in her depression. Join us for the conclusion episode on the life of Marilyn Monroe as we say goodbye to one of the most icon humans to ever live. (Ep. 045)

(Dear Mr. Gable) *** There is a rumor that Jacques Cousteau dove to the bottom of Lake Tahoe and filmed a creature but did not release the film saying that “The world was not yet ready for what's down there”. What is at the bottom of Lake Tahoe? (The Lake Tahoe Monster) *** There is a type of mass murder that draws true-crime connoisseurs like no other… familicide, more often called family annihilation. It is a crime that has invoked horror and fascination in equal measures.  (The Psychology of Family Annihilators) CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = Disclaimer and Cold Open00:04:07.196 = Show Intro00:06:22.567 = The Psychology of Family Annihilators00:31:32.535 = Dear Mr. Gable00:45:22.688 = Romanian Poltergeist Girl01:01:31.721 = Lake Tahoe Monster01:14:30.776 = Show Close01:16:40.636 = BloopersSOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“The Psychology of Family Annihilators” and “Family Annihilators Case Studies” by Fiona Guy for Crime Traveler:https://tinyurl.com/y3av5wxn, and Jody Allen for Stay At Home Mum: https://tinyurl.com/y2fuwnhh“Dear Mr. Gable” is from Deranged LA Crimes: https://tinyurl.com/yyqletev, https://tinyurl.com/y4bou5s2“The Romanian Poltergeist Girl” from Euro Paranormal: https://tinyurl.com/y59b7ojt“The Lake Tahoe Monster” by Richard Freeman for Fortean Zoology: https://tinyurl.com/y4fxsdueWeird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library. = = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. EPISODE 60 - "THELMA RITTER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 11/04/2024 There's a scene in the classic 1950 film All About Eve where Eve Harrington (ANNE BAXTER), a star-struck fan who has infiltrated the life of Broadway star Margo Channing (BETTE DAVIS), is telling the tragic story of her past to Margo and her friends. While Margo and company are drawn into the sad circumstances of Eve's life, Margo's acerbic dresser Birdie, played to perfection by the great THELMA RITTER, is not buying her sob story. After Eve finishes, Birdie mutters, "What a story! Everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end." This is probably the moment I fell in love with Ritter. With her heavy New York accent, diminutive size, working-class charm, and sarcastic zingers, she made a career of stealing scenes from big stars and making the most of her time on screen. She played characters wiser than most, and her characters certainly didn't suffer fools gladly. She is a cinematic treasure, and we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. Opposites attract with magnetic force in this romantic road-trip delight from Frank Capra, about a spoiled runaway socialite (Claudette Colbert) and a roguish man-of-the-people reporter (Clark Gable) who is determined to get the scoop on her scandalous disappearance. The first film to accomplish the very rare feat of sweeping all five major Oscar categories (best picture, best actor, best actress, best director, and best screenplay), IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT is among the most gracefully constructed and edited films of the early sound era, packed with clever situations and gags that have entered the Hollywood comedy pantheon and featuring two actors at the top of their game, sparking with a chemistry that has never been bettered.

This week the docs take a brief jaunt OUT of Los Angeles to the sunny and gorgeous sands of Hollywood's Desert Playground - aka  Palm Springs. Although a year round destination for relaxation and glamour, there are dark aspects among the glittering sapphire pools of the Oasis of the Desert's past. After all, a place with golden age ties to Hollywood is bound to have some sordid stories to tell - case in point: the tumultuous life of Tom Neal, a promising Hollywood actor in the late 1930s, groomed to be the next Clark Gable. Neal's career, however, was overshadowed by scandalous affairs and headline-grabbing incidents that eventually derailed his success. Despite a brief resurgence as a leading man in the 1940s, his off-screen behavior, including a notorious altercation with actor Franchot Tone, led to his downfall. By the 1950s, Neal struggled to find work, relegated to minor roles on local soap operas, where he continued to clash with colleagues. Despite several attempts to reinvent himself over the years, his desperation and addiction led to business failures, scandal and a brutal murder.CrimeCon UK September 2024: Tickets Berkshire Podcast Festival October 2024: Tickets Join our Patreon family! You can find all of our resources on our website: https://www.la-not-so-confidential.com/  L.A. Maybe the production values aren't the best, and maybe the story is grittier than most, but these little gems have provided hours of viewing pleasure to so many. These films also had great leading men in them. Studly, sturdy, reliable actors who might not be GARY COOPER or CARY GRANT or CLARK GABLE, but were handsome and talented and knew how to beat up the bad guys and win over the lovely leading lady. Beautiful, talented, and a skilled singer and dancer, she lights up any scene she's in. Despite appearing in over 100 films, she rarely received screen credit and most often played a maid, waitress, or other types of domestic servant. Her parts were small, but her charisma and presence on screen were enormous! As a black woman in the early days of Hollywood, she was limited in the roles she could perform by the restrictive Hayes Code of 1934 and the horrible Jim Crow laws of the South.
