Time to Restump Podcast Saturday evening's walk in the Optus Stadium park.Imagine being a west coast supporter and thinking you're an improved outfit. 12 scoring shots for the game, just 5 in the second half for 1 goal 4. Quite simply, they were putrid. If Fremantle did anything wrong, it was gravely underestimating the sufficient level of complacency required to win. We could have implemented a player management strategy with a performance output made up of equal parts apathy and lethargy!Pretty much other than the minor premiership securing 4 points, there was almost nothing to take out of that game. I mean it was a good win, and a win by 10 goals, but let's be fair, we were up against a team of Richmond rejects, mid-season recruits and a guy who cries ‘free kick' if someone goes within 6 feet of him! Harley Reid has implemented his own social distancing policy. He rings his own free kick hot line when anyone breaches his self-designated safe space and lodges a complaint!The reality is the game was never out of our control and by quarter time, despite us being the narrowest of margins behind, it went from a procession to a formality, before we let down to a ‘going through the motions' routine.Yes, Murphy Reid continued bedazzling us, Matty Johnson had arguably his career best game and Jye Amiss, with another 5 goals, showed he has well and truly arrived. But let's ironically sing the praises of the unsung heroes.Disco Nathan had a ripper of a game. Is it right to suggest he hasn't the best right foot? But, on his left foot, unlike what left his right foot, a lot left right out of the middle. So, he did a lot right with his left, he left nothing in the tank and right now he's in no danger of being left right out! (I can't be the only one who is now bamboozled to a point of not knowing my left from my right?) Anyway, 2 goals, 7 score involvements, 11 possessions and a goal 3rd quarter, and plenty of defensive work from his 19 total touches from the wing was a pretty important contribution. And the ultimate team man Paddy Voss! His selflessness was on display yet again with his all-round game having a greater impact than it suggests on paper. Add in his goal, his 7 score involvements, his 6 inside fifties and his shepherding of Shai Bolton's goal and it puts substantial meat on those 11 disposal bones.The good news just kept coming off the field with Murphy Reid signing on until 2032 and Hugh Davies dedicating his future to Freo by putting pen to paper. We cannot overstate how big an achievement securing the extension for Murphy Reid is. The system Fremantle has put in place, the culture they have built, the recruiting and list management they have conducted, the ignoring of the outside noise and backing in Justin Longmuir and the resulting ridiculously successful year we have so far put together, are all encompassing elements that enticed and landed Murphy Reid for longer. He didn't initially want to come to Fremantle and now he doesn't want to leave. That is a monumental feather in the Freo cap. Well, Saturday night was fun but unfortunately the derbies have just lost their shine. Sadly, like they did to state of origin football in its former format, the West Coast Eagles have killed them off.However, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of purple to prattle on about on the pod! Sometimes they're derbies, sometimes they're simply leg stretching, workload management periods. Time to Restump Podcast what was arguably the most mundane Western Derby in history. Inevitability is the thief of suspense. Has there been less excitement to the build up to a Western Derby? Unsurprisingly the lack of hype and interest for the game met expectations. There was no pulse, not a moment of angst as it all felt a bit soulless. No Optus Stadium fire hydrants need replacing because there wasn't a single spot fire on the day. Derby greats of yesteryear from both teams would be shaking their head in disappointment, bewildered about what the Derbies have become.Is it a sign of the times, where the “It isn't a good look” folk have too much influence? Are the finger wagging purists in charge, frowning upon anyone who colours outside the line? Are the players prioritising earning capacity over the love of the jumper?Or is it simply the West Coast Eagles are so dreadfully uncompetitive, they've sucked all the derby fun out of existence? While the smart money is on the latter, it was still played in far too good a spirit. I simply can't recall ever having these thoughts regarding a derby ever and I have seen every single one. From our purple perspective it was pleasing to see Jye Amiss get on the end of a handful of goals. A day out indeed, but he probably left a couple more out there. Is he back on track? His recent games have shown promise, but we reserve full judgment as you can't assess accurately against that non-existent pressure.Murphy Reid is going the right way to get himself a hard tag each week going forward. If Murph was playing for Freo in the early modern period in the 16th century and delivered the same sorcery he is today, he'd have been burned at the stake! Josh Treacy and Andy Brayshaw both took the opportunity to let the foot off the pedal as their usual hundred miles an hour input just simply wasn't necessary.Jordan Clark was awarded the Rosco Allan medal but… really? We're not talking about or taking any notice of accolades for anything against that abysmal Eagles outfit. To be fair, the West Coast fans should have all gotten medals for sitting through and watching that tripe their team served up!All in all, it was a difficult watch in terms of enthusiasm. However, the overriding positive is we're 5 and 1 after 6 rounds and sitting second behind the Swans on percentage. That's something to get excited about.  Not much more we can say about western derby 62, but whatever can be said, we'll save it and say it on the pod. The last thing a team with the word wood in its name wants to see, is a carpenter in the opposition working on defence! Time to Restump Podcast Lukey Ryan's woodworking masterclass and the hard-fought win over the Woodsmen.It was always only a matter of time, but Lukey Ryan is back to his brilliant best. He's moving fluently, his timing precise, he mopped up everything and got us out of strife on more times than we can recall. His stabilising influence and confidence he provides others add to an already well functioning defence. Quite simply, the apprentice chippie was too good for the woodies! Now that was a win! Don't know about anyone else but we're a bit bemused by the negative commentary surrounding the game from a spectacle standpoint. Despite the constant efforts of commentators to suggest we were struggling; the game was never, not even for a second, not in the balance. Every moment mattered, you were fully engaged and locked in and you couldn't take your eyes of it. Admittedly the conditions and consequent errors didn't help, but there were so many majestic moments amid the madness. Have we become spoilt by dry weather footy? Are we unrealistically captured by the desire for perfection?Yes, he may have won the game for the Pies had he taken his chances… but how many times did we crunch Lachie Schultz? What about the moments of Murphy Reid mesmerism? Luke Jackson's 4 huge grabs in a 5-minute period, Dudley applying chase down pressure, the Johnson goal, the Amiss goal, the Brayshaw lunging tackle and of course the Josh Treacy game saving clunk!I'll be back in 20 minutes, I gotta go watch them all again! Alex Pearce once again showed why the captain's cap fits and it's his for as long as he wants. You'd go as far as to suggest he'd be your first picked player if you were selecting the team. He and Josh Treacy have the ability to meaningfully impact the game without necessarily having ball in hand. Izzy Dudley's rise has been meteoric! He's gone from the sub to the sublime in the blink of an eye. Do we win that game without his contribution? He takes his chances and creates opportunities for others.Given where they have come from, their journeys to get here and that they've had to fight for everything, it is incredible to realise that the tough, combative and courageous Wagner and Worner workhorses are integral parts of the war plans.Gary Lyon and co going after Murphy Reid, chipping him for the occasional mistake, while somehow simultaneously suggesting he is miraculous, was a strange take. He's a kid who performs on-field sorcery, something he can't do if he doesn't attempt it. What is that quote about missing 100% of the shots you don't take?We can't end this parochial Docker diatribe without stopping, folding the arms and nodding in acknowledgement of and appreciation for Luke Jackson. He got the JL message loud and clear at half time and went on a rampage! In the five to six minute period between the end of the 3rd quarter and the beginning of 4th, he managed four big clunking grabs. Add those to his absurd output and you realise he's actually going up levels before our very eyes!We have to get Paddy back up and about. The AFL suits have destroyed his spirit as he now plays well within himself, without the freeing exuberance. He's regressed inward and that is not helping him, the team or us fans. Could the Derby timing be any better? What better way to get your mojo back than unleashing the Pony mayhem in a Western Derby! Anyway, it was too big a win and there is too much more to say and not enough ink to say it all here! Nearly a four large fine for Paddy because Harley wasn't watching where he was going! What a travesty! Is this where the revenue raising AFL corporation world has gotten to? Time to Restump Podcast the formality that was Saturday afternoon. Paddy Voss should be hailed, heralded and and held up as a beacon of compassion and restraint. He had the chance to put Harley Reid in the morgue. But he fought every fibre of his being and showed wonderful discipline to not follow through. Pre-game we're all for it, but we take no enjoyment sticking the banter boots into West Coast post-game after a win. Hey, we don't make the rules, we just abide by them. The entire day was a formality. It was simply a matter of just going through the motions and overseeing the safe transport of the 4 valuable points into our win account. It was a precisely calculated and managed, bigger fish to fry performance. At three quarter time JL gave them a spray telling them to be mindful of their excursion and to reel in the effort and intensity! He said, “This is July and they're blue and gold traffic cones, so leave plenty out there and I don't want to see anyone come off that ground with an empty tank!”  Understandably, apart from Liam Ryan standing on Karl Worner's head, the game never reached any great heights. While similar in age and relative experience, there were two vastly different classes of teams out there and there was a boat load of daylight between them. However, it was pretty enjoyable watching the surely now unbackable 2025 rising star winner, Murphy Reid, go about his business yet again like a seasoned veteran. His craft, his ability to execute and his intelligence… he has no purple peer!Well maybe that's not quite true because that guy Hayden Young is thereabouts. What a welcome inclusion he is. We've missed him all year and his return to the side couldn't have been better timed. 23 disposals, 6 inside 50s, 7 clearances and an absurd 3 goals. And if you thought that was mental, he ridiculously did it with just 57% of time on ground.Can we stop and appreciate the work of Jaegar O'Meara? The endless variety of roles and tasks he has been asked to do since he arrived at the club, not many players could perform them to such a level he has. Albeit acknowledging the disparity in age and experience and condition between the two, his work on Harley Reid on the weekend was superb.  It was a convincing win but it wasn't the percentage booster we were all hoping for. We did put on 3% though and surprisingly we're now ahead of Brisbane on the metric. However, we're rarely been big on percentage. We've been a big percentage boosting team at times in the past, but unfortunately it has usually been for an opponent! So, lets just focus on the winning. A place in the top 8, possibly top 4, is ours to lose. This game probably perfectly falls into the never as good or as bad as it seems category. We weren't at our best but we won comfortably. We generated a lot of shots on goal but our inaccuracy hurt us. Not really sure what else we learn from the game, but given it was against West Coast there'd no doubt be some substance to take out of it! Oh, c'mon it's West Coast… it's cheap shots and lame lines in more ways than one, all round! Anyway, lets engage the detection dogs and get them to run their noses over the game on the pod. Isn't one of the perks of being an AFL footballer that it saves you from digging ditches for a living? $2 million a year and he still has to get on the end of spoony type shovel at that club! Time to Restump Podcast Saturday's stroll towards September. Yes, we know, you're screaming “footy Gods” “you'll jinx us” and “don't tempt fate.” Too late! We've gone all in, chips in the middle of the table. I mean in 1789 Benjamin Franklin wrote “Nothing is certain except death, taxes and Fremantle beating West Coast on the 26th July 2025.” The guy was obviously a prophet.Sure, we all remember and we're all still dealing with the scars of round 6 last year when West Coast found a way to beat us. But we're not that team anymore and we haven't been that team since round eight this year against the Saints. Like West Coast Eagles at a community holiday program for kids, we were absent that day. We're a mentally tough outfit now, we've eradicated the periods of lethargy and inattentiveness, we now turn up at the first bounce week in week out and we're playing with an authority and confidence.  There are no omens here, there's no voodoo, no juju that'll stop us winning Saturday. I mean the Coasters went all in to try and give their fans something against Richmond last week, a club that is further back in it's rebuild, and they got embarrassed. Look at their list they're rolling out! They should be called the West Coast Owls, because every time you hear one of their players mentioned, you say, who?The only possible disappointing outcome on Saturday will be if we don't retrieve enough percentage from the opportunity. Time to Restump Podcast the brushing aside of the Eagles.We celebrate the win and welcome the four points but we left a lot score out there and the questionable skills remained on display. You get the feeling that while it was enjoyable, after the dust settled, it was more of a relief than it was a thumping return to form.The return to form of Caleb Serong was a sight to behold, but to be honest, there was no reason why he shouldn't have against such opposition. And right there lies the mixed feelings when reviewing and assessing Sunday. You want be thrilled and elated by a win, but after the first two weeks Sunday's performance had to be about method and process rather than score. Had we lost that game, the season was over but despite our form in rounds one and two, what West Coast were able to serve up and where they're at as a club, the result was pretty much a formality. But you can only take out of it what was served up. Yes, we saw the Caleb Serong and Andy Brayshaw we have come to know and love so well. Luke Jackson put in a staggeringly good performance, Jai Amiss found some footy and space between the big sticks, the Captain ensured Oscar remained in his trash can, we got to enjoy Izzy Dudley's polished debut and, amongst some extremely ordinary ball use, we got to see some super smarts and some silk in the form of Murphy Reid. So, we take the positives and a measured approach to the value and the meaningfulness of the victory. Maybe not as pronounced and maybe there has been some improvement, but the reality is you couldn't watch that game and not understand how poor west coast eagles are and you surely can't think the issues from round one and two have evaporated. We've obviously got plenty of work to do but the four points on Sunday gave a shot of life to our season. The Bulldogs next week will be a formidable opponent and it will tell us where we are and what to make of yesterday.Jojo took umbrage at the AFL's pathetic post-game AI generated image so we'll see what his beef is about. And the Chief is disappointed at the lack of support for Caleb Serong and the lackluster retaliatory effort after Harley's Reid's cheap shot.We love and cherish a derby victory and we hope it has delivered some much-needed confidence for the team.
