FROM GOLF PASS:Golfers love a good challenge. Whether a good player or just a weekend hack, we all want to feel like we've accomplished something when we walk off the golf course, whether that's beating our handicap, crushing our buddies for a few bucks or having the round of a lifetime. Not all of us play serious competitive golf, but we all can play serious tournament venues to gauge the state of our game. We've spent extensive hours researching our latest Top 100 list: America's top 100 tournament golf courses you can play. We wanted to identify the best of the best out of the thousands of U.S. courses that host state and local tournaments and hundreds of college courses that hold competitions, too. We examined the tournament histories of America's best public and resort courses to determine our rankings. We analyzed courses that have hosted professional golf tournaments from the PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR Champions, Korn Ferry Tour, LPGA Tour and Epson Tour to United States Golf Association and PGA of America championships. Even Division I college tournaments - nationals, regionals and conference tournaments, plus long-time events - and state PGA professional and elite junior tournaments factored into our equation. In ranking each course, we tried to balance its tournament pedigree against the course's difficulty and critical acclaim. Much of the list is a who's-who of playing where the pros play, although we made sure to sprinkle in high-profile venues for big amateur championships as well.CLICK HERE FOR THE LIST: GOLF PASS

We talk to Fred Perpall about his journey from growing up in Nassau, Bahamas, to becoming the 67th President of the USGA. Fred, who is the CEO of the Beck Group, an international architecture and construction firm, came to the game a bit later in the life, but having been bitten by the bug, he brings great passion and leadership to the game. We talk about a number of recent USGA developments, including anchor sites, the new Adaptive Open, the enhancements that have been made to the US Women's Open, the USGA's collaboration with the Los Angeles Country Club and the SCGA regarding the development of the Maggie Hathaway golf facility in conjunction with this year's US Open at LACC, and the recently proposed model local rule regarding the reduced distance golf ball.
There is a golf ball that sits in a glass cabinet in the museum of the United States Golf Association at Liberty Corner in New Jersey, donated by Jeremy Bittner. This ball could be seen as an emblem of a remarkable year for Bittner in 2022, the amputee golfer used it to record the first hole-in-one in the inaugural US Adaptive Open, made at Pinehurst Number 6. This was just one shot in a blaze of fine shots. The man from Pittsburgh climbed from 170th place in the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability to number 11, and qualified to play on the G4D Tour this January. Jeremy lost his lower left leg in a lawnmower accident when he was four years old. Despite this difficult start in life, encouraged by his father and always included by his young friends, he emerged as a sporty and energetic youngster. Dad got him into golf: in his early teens he joined the high school golf team and he has never looked back. Enjoy listening to Jeremy's unique story today.

Teddy and Higgy are absolutely ecstatic to be able to share the conversation they had with Brendan Walsh, Director of Golf & Head PGA Professional for The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts! The Country Club will be hosting the fast approaching 2022 US Open! TCC is the oldest country club in the United States and one of the five founding golf clubs that started the United States Golf Association. The history of The Country Club is awe inspiring. When you walk onto the grounds, you can literally feel the history & almost see the legends of the game as you walk along the fairways, knowing that this hallowed ground & country club was instrumental in the development of golf as we know it in the U.S. and all throughout the entire world. It's truly a magical feeling. In fact, some of the most important moments for the game of golf in the U.S. have happened at TCC. They hosted the historical 1913 U.S. Open, which was won by a local 20 year old amateur player named Francis Ouimet, who lived across the street & worked as a caddy at TCC! He beat golfing legends Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in an 18 hole playoff to win the 1913 US Open! His remarkable win sparked the golfing boom in the U.S. & changed the game forever. Each of the three U.S. Opens hosted at The Country Club have resulted in a tie at the end of regulation play & required an 18 hole playoff to determine the winner. Legions of golf fans are excited to see if this tradition holds true for the 2022 US Open. Despite being deep in preparations for the upcoming 2022 US Open, Brendan was able to find some time to share with us the history of TCC, his background in the game of golf, and why he's so passionate about mentorship in both the game of golf & in the business of golf. This was a truly one-of-a-kind conversation for an amazing and historical golf course. If you're as interested in the history of the game as Teddy and Higgy are, you won't want to miss out on the details shared about this amazing golf course, from an absolute gentleman & great steward of the game of golf, Mr. Brendan Walsh! Show Notes: [01:20] Teddy and Higgy are super excited to be chatting with Brendan Walsh, Director of Golf at The Country Club. [14:05] They've hosted a record six national Amateurs. [17:04] It's amazing that the membership at The Country Club is so open with their course. [18:11] How does the course change for championships? [22:12] Learn more about how they incorporate holes in different championships. [25:07] Do they have member events that play the same tees? [37:25] Does he have a favorite golf course outside of his home club? [38:53] One story that he'll never forget during his time at The Country Club. [41:36] Brendan's advice for someone who's never played the course. [44:49] Some behind the scenes information about preparing for the 2022 US Open. The Masters Golf Tournament is held in the first full week of April in Augusta, Ga. “My brother, Randall Troy Goeth, enjoyed golf. Golf Shop interview with Senior Manager of Women's Championship Communications for the United States Golf Association, Julia Pine. Originally aired: 07/27/2019
In Larry Gilhuly’s opinion, the three biggest issues facing the game of golf are pace of play, player enjoyment and economic sustainability. Larry believes he has the solution for all three: “The answer for all of these, in my opinion, are properly placed forward tees.” This week our host Colin Weston speaks with Larry Gilhuly, who is an Agronomist with The United States Golf Association and a passionate advocate of the TEE IT FORWARD program. window.dojoRequire(["mojo/signup-forms/Loader"], function(L) { L.start({"baseUrl":"mc.us19.list-manage.com","uuid":"fb1db86bf86e67d377747be70","lid":"2e2f634e4c","uniqueMethods":true}) }) https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/64h8W0Kb.jpg https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/PN7kM1qB.jpg TEE IT FORWARD is a joint initiative between the USGA and The PGA of America that encourages players to play from a set of tees best suited to their driving distance. In addition to providing more enjoyment for golfers, teeing it forward also can be one of the most important steps that golfers take in improving pace of play. A recent survey of TEE IT FORWARD participants found that: 56% played faster 56% are likely to play golf more often 83% hit more-lofted clubs into greens 85% had more fun 93% will TEE IT FORWARD again New forward tees allow more golfers to play from a yardage that is appropriate for their swing speed and ability. They also help new players take up the game. For much of his 35-year career with the United States Golf Association, Gilhuly was all about agronomy. His formal title with the USGA is Agronomist, West Region. In other words, Gilhuly is an expert on growing grass. But in recent years, Gilhuly has become passionate - very passionate - about teeing it forward. And by forward, he means way forward. “This topic that I am talking about has got me fired up,” Gilhuly told us. It was hard not to buy his argument. Gilhuly came armed with data to back up his claim that courses are too hard, even from the current forward tees, for average female golfers and senior players. As we age, our swing speeds decline and so does the distance we hit the ball. The average female player, Gilhuly said, has a swing speed of about 60 miles per hour. She averages about 140 yards with her driver, 120 yards with her 3-wood and about 60 yards with her wedge. That makes it impossible for that player to hit greens in regulation on the vast majority of holes from the current forward tees at most courses. “There are a lot of golfers, males, who can reach the green in regulation with a lot of different clubs, but not the women,” Gilhuly said. This isn’t a new problem. Gilhuly described an article headlined, “Women Handicapped By Men’s Courses.” It was written in 1917 by Alexa Stirling, a past U.S. Women’s Amateur Champion. “This has been a problem for a lot longer than I think we all realize,” he said. U.S. Women’s Amateur Champion Alexa Stirling, Circa 1919 https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/G_ZJ7gjV.jpg Over 100 Years Ago Stirling concluded that golf courses were set up for men to the detriment of female golfers. Thankfully, golf course operators are slowly starting to get it. Gilhuly and other 'Tee it Forward' proponents have been able to convince them that in order to set up a course so it presents an equal challenge to that faced by more accomplished players playing from the regular or back tees, the forward tees need to be moved forward, on average, about 1,000 yards. “Properly placed forward tees give all players a good experience,” Gilhuly said. “Think about it, if you started a business from scratch and wanted to be successful, would you say 'let’s make sure in our model here that half of the population tries it once and quits.' I don’t think that is what you do. You try and encompass everybody. This is not just for female players. It is for everybody.” From most current forward tees, which average in the neighbourhood of 5,200 yards, players with slower swing speeds have no chance of hitting greens in regulation on most holes. In fact, on many courses the only greens that can be reached in regulation for those players are the par 3s. “For (average) females a par 3 should not be longer than 140 (yards), the length of a par 4 should not be over 260 and a par 5 should not be over 380,” Gilhuly said. “There is this magic number that I find at almost every course and it’s usually between 4,000 and 4,300 yards,” he said. Click (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZURvu3T8WVg) to watch the TEE IT FORWARD YouTube explanatory video https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/-gtTx183.jpg “That’s it. It always seems to fall in that category. People look at me and blink. They thought the course was short enough at 5,000. No, not even close. And then you can do combinations with these new tees and the (former) forward tees. That’s the whole idea of this. It is happening. Golf courses are starting to do this.” Players who never stood a chance of making pars and birdies now have that opportunity. And Gilhuly said the game becomes fun for them again. New forward tees also prompt the stubborn older guys to move up to the former front tees. And they will make it easier for kids to begin the game. “Forward tees are good for the game,” Gilhuly said. “They are. They give everybody an option. Pace of play has improved when forward tees are added. All my friends who have lost their swing speed over the last 10 years are now playing what were the old forward tees.” Gilhuly had another message for us: “Red is dead,” he said, referring to red tees. “I hate red colours,” he said. “If we could just do this one thing, get rid of the red tees. It is amazing what happens. Gilhuly said some courses have dropped colour-coded tees all together and started simply numbering their tees. “Start with 1 being the forward tee and work your way back,” he said. “Seniors will move forward. I guarantee it. I will buy you a beer if they don’t. “Pace of play, player enjoyment and economic sustainability all improve with forward tees,” Gilhuly said in closing. “In my opinion this century-old mistake holds the key to our game. That’s a bold comment but it is so simple. If we just add these forward tees we will get more women into the game. There’s no question in my mind.” Special Guest: Larry Gilhuly - USGA Agronomist and TEE IT FORWARD program advocate..

This week on “Marketing Today,” Alan talks with Alex Withers, chief sales and marketing officer for InMotionNow, a creative workflow software platform that powers creative and marketing collaboration in the cloud. Withers is a seasoned digital technology marketing executive with previous experience working at Pepsi, ESPN, United States Golf Association, Financial Times, Sageworks, and LexisNexis. In his conversation with Alan, Withers discusses the value InMotionNow can bring to marketers, particularly its ability to minimize the amount of time creatives spend on administrative tasks, the importance of data, and his belief that marketers should not lose sight of the power of creativity. InMotionNow recently released the 2018 In-house Creative Management Report, which highlights key trends and challenges internal teams are experiencing. Withers addresses the trend we’re seeing of companies bringing creative work in-house and the reasoning behind it: “I think that CMOs are enjoying having creative teams in-house that understand the brand, live the brand day in and day out,” says Withers. “Therefore, they can ramp faster, turn projects quicker. With an outside agency, often they have to bounce between accounts and value props, whereas your in-house team lives and breathes the value prop every day.” Let Your Voice Be Heard “Marketing Today” has a new Q&A feature! Ever wish you could ask a question on the show? Well, now you can. Just click this link and ask your question — it’s that easy. And if we can, we’ll answer it on the next podcast. We’re looking forward to your questions! Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: Withers describes the InMotionNow offering and talks about his dual role with the company. (2:03) Withers on companies bringing creative work in-house: “It’s undeniable…It’s now a trend; it’s not a single data point.” (4:56) “You need data in to create a data argument out.” (9:27) Withers talks about the year of the analytical creative: “What we’re seeing is a shift toward creative leadership, at least, being more data-driven.” (11:01) “A perfect storm to create more.” Withers details the growing demand for creative content. (13:55) No wobbly wheels: Withers on the importance of the creative project intake. (17:20) Withers’ advice for CMOs tackling creative challenges: “Pay attention to the creative organization…If we don’t pay attention to the creative, we’re really losing the roots that got us into marketing in the first place” (24:44) “The best thing that ever happened to marketing was the internet. And the worst thing that ever happened to marketing was the internet.” (30:28) Resources mentioned in Episode: 2018 In-house Creative Management Report by InMotionNow and InSource: https://bit.ly/2MQkAn9 Cora CGI, the CGI and AR technology to scale retail creative needs: https://cora.creativedrive.com/ Support the show.

Jack Berry, renowned sports writer talks about fellow Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member Glenn Johnson who passed away recently and was an important mentor and friend of Emily’s, as he was to many. Mahalo for listening to the talk story or reading the story and nice tribute to Glenn that Jack wrote and I have included below. GLENN By Jack Berry The PGA Tour had Doug Sanders. The European Tour has Ian Poulter. The LPGA has Paula Creamer. But for all out color and pizzazz, we had Glenn Johnson of Grosse Ile. Johnson arrived in Charlevoix for the Michigan Amateur in a Cadillac top down convertible packed with clothing changes for three double round days of match play. That was confidence and that was Glenn Johnson. “I had fun with the clothes. I hated to play (after a morning round) without cleaning up,” Johnson said. “One time a guy asked me why I was always changing colors, why I didn’t wear black or white. I went out that afternoon in red, white, blue, black, everything. He was 2 down after the first two holes. “I liked match play. I enjoyed the psychology, watching the opponent. I had more fun without saying anything,” Johnson said. “I’d look at their grip and they’d be thinking ‘Is something wrong with my grip?’” There was no one like him in Michigan golf and he passed away to the green course in the sky on Dec. 11 at the age of 92. The later years were difficult but there were so many good times, so many matches won and memories like the Michigan sectional qualifying held at Birmingham Country Club for the 1972 United States Open at Pebble Beach. Chuck Thorpe, the confident young brother of the PGA Tour’s Jim Thorpe, and Johnson were tied after regulation. Thorpe, a brash smasher, figured to win on the first hole. A par five. Thorpe didn’t use a tee. He’d stomp his heel into the ground and place the ball on top of the upturned turf. But he only made par and so did Johnson. The second hole was a short par four with the green short of the river, unlike today’s position. It was driveable but Thorpe didn’t drive it, made bogey and Johnson won with a par and was off to Pebble Beach. Johnson played the Monday and Tuesday practice rounds before “immense crowds.” He’d called Arnold Palmer and asked to play with him. Johnson knew Palmer since he played in the prestigious Grosse Ile Invitational in Arnie’s amateur days. After the two Palmer rounds Johnson hooked up with defending Open champion Lee Trevino on Wednesday, his third round with two of golf’s superstars on one of the most famous courses in the world. That was Glenn. Johnson didn’t play golf until after service in World War II as a pilot, teaching men how to fly the B-24 Liberator bomber, and then college at Michigan State. He won nine letters in sports at Grosse Ile High School, had three years in at Michigan State before the military service and returned to play quarterback his senior year. He played against Miami in the Orange Bowl stadium, played against Santa Clara on the West Coast and said that rules permitted only one substitute per quarter so “If you were first string, you played about 50 minutes every game.” Johnson’s father was a captain in Ford’s lake freighter fleet and the family settled on Grosse Ile in 1927. Glenn naturally took to the water and sailed the Port Huron to Mackinac race and was first mate on a winner. He was a lifelong fisherman with a boat docked by his house. He finally connected with golf “because the practice tee was 200 yards from my house” and said he worked hard at it. His short game was especially sharp. “I didn’t hit it that far but I knew where to hit it” and match play was his game. Johnson won five Michigan Amateur championships, second only to six by Chuck Kocsis. When the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame was established, Kocsis was in the first threesome with World Golf Hall of Famer Walter Hagen and Oakland Hills professional Al Watrous. Johnson was in the second threesome with two-time Masters champion Horton Smith and PGA champion Walter Burkemo. Four legendary professionals and two superb amateurs formed the first six members of the Hall of Fame. When Johnson came to golf, he came full force. He played in 43 Michigan Amateurs, at one point won 23 straight matches, qualified to play in 17 United States Golf Association championships, was low amateur in the 1981 Open at Oakland Hills, and won 15 Grosse Ile club championships. As a senior he helped form the Society of Seniors, an organization of the best senior amateurs in the country. He won the Eastern Seniors five times and a North and South Senior. He looked out for young players at Grosse Ile, and Emily Gail, a top junior, said “Glenn was a huge factor in my being encouraged to be a good female athlete. He was a great mentor and friend. I called him a couple weeks ago as I would do a couple times a year to tell him how much I appreciated his encouragement. He helped me learn how to love hitting balls and practice which I still do.” And because Johnson also was a skier, two of Michigan’s best holiday golf tournaments were established. “I skied at Boyne Mountain and became friends with (owner) Everett Kircher. He had a golf course and Labor Day weekend was deadsville. I told him he had all those empty beds and he should start a two man tournament.” Kircher took the advice, made Johnson co-chairman and the Kircher Cup is nearly four decades old with a full field every year. Then Johnson, assisted by the late Bucky Brower, real estate salesman and something of the unofficial mayor of Boyne Country, talked Kircher into starting a tournament in another “deadsville” period, Memorial Day weekend. Now it’s the Nike State Pro-Am. Besides his golf, skiing, boating, and interest in the Red Wings – he had seats right behind the goal in the Olympia Stadium days, Johnson was an accomplished artist. One of his favorite subjects was clowns and one of his paintings is in the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame collections of members’ memorabilia. Grosse Ile members and friends of Johnson celebrated his 90th birthday at the club and unveiled an exhibition of his many trophies, medals and awards received over the years. There’s a full length painting of Johnson with trousers as colorful as a tropical garden. “I’ve had a fantastic run,” Johnson said when he was a guest of honor at the 100th Michigan Amateur in 2011 at the Heather course, his favorite, at Boyne Highlands. Fittingly, he was wearing a sweater of many colors.
During Mike's Course - Mike and Billy discuss Billy's trip to Virginia CC and Billy's new workout regiment while on the golf course. Since focusing her skills as a landscape painter to recreate some of the world's most beautiful golf holes, Linda Hartough has become recognized as one of golf's leading artists. So extraordinary and realistic is her attention to detail that her oil paintings seem to come alive with a clarity that surpasses the camera. Her work has gained international fame. She is the only artist ever commissioned by the United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews to do the annual, official paintings and prints for the U.S. Open and British Open Championships. She has painted prestigious golf courses from the U.S. to Scotland to Hong Kong. Her paintings are so admired that they have earned a place on two ABC Television Golf Specials on famous golf holes hosted by Jack Nicklaus. Her paintings are in the collections of such famous clubs as Augusta National, Pine Valley and Laurel Valley. Hartough originals are also included in the private collections of Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones and Rees Jones. Linda Hartough calls into the show - a confirmed artist since the age of six, Linda was raised in the picturesque country sides of Wilmington, Delaware and Louisville, Kentucky. Much of her early career was spent in Chicago where, after receiving her Fine Arts degree from the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1970, she made a living by selling her paintings locally. In 1980, Linda moved to South Carolina near Hilton Head where, she painted landscapes, portraits and horses. In 1984, Augusta National Golf Club commissioned her to paint the famed 13th hole, thus beginning her golf landscape career. After an enormous response to her work at the 1988 PGA Show in Orlando, Linda focused her career entirely on golf landscapes. Since that time, Linda's work has enjoyed unparalleled status in the golf world, while receiving international acclaim including Golf Digest's "Lifetime Achievement Award." Linda is privileged to be a Founding Trustee of the Academy of Golf Art, a professional society of golf artists established in 2004 to create an awareness and appreciation of golf art as a valuable segment of fine art. Linda's approach to capturing a great golf hole is by spending a week or more at each course, taking photographs at different times of the day to capture all possible lights. She then figures out what is important or memorable in each view of a hole and makes sure this is included in the painting. Her memory serves as a less objective image of the hole. The combination of the two provides the unique view found in each of her paintings. "I really enjoy painting golf landscape. It is some of the most beautiful and varied landscape in the world combined with a deep, historical sense of tradition that transcends time. The painting is a success when both elements emerge."Visit www.tourstrikershop.com and use the promo code "GTR" for FREE shipping on the Tour Striker! Last month at the NewTeeVee Live conference, Betsy Flanagan from Startup Studio spent a few minutes with two industry leaders. The first is Alex Withers who is the Managing Director of Digital Media for the United States Golf Association who shared how the financial crisis is impacting their business and how he systematically decides what content should be streamed live vs. repurposed vs. perfectly produced. The second guest is Jeff Gomez the CEO of Starlight Runner Entertainment who explained what transmedia is, how big companies and small independent content creators can use it and a few success metrics and stories.
