COVID-19 has been primarily characterised by respiratory symptoms. But, for some, the infection may also be accompanied by a cytokine storm. This causes the migration and activation of white blood cells and inflammatory proteins known as cytokines and can result in the destruction of lung tissue and surrounding blood vessels. Excessive and impaired blood clotting, known as coagulopathy, is another common complication and is related to poorer outcomes and mortality. What causes one person to be at risk of these outcomes and others not is still uncertain, but some interesting studies warrant our consideration to minimise these risks. One such study from July 2021 assessed the proposal that high homocysteine, associated with an MTHFR gene mutation might be a predictive biomarker for the severity of COVID-19 infection. We've heard a lot about MTHFR in recent years. We know that relatively common variations in the gene are associated with a range of health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, migraines, and autoimmune diseases. We're not so familiar with the potential impacts MTHFR gene variations might have on someone with a COVID-19 infection. To help us better understand this study and the role MTHFR and homocysteine may be playing relative to the COVID-19 pandemic, we invited Dr Denise Furness to the podcast.Dr Furness is a functional geneticist and nutritionist. She is a pioneer in the field of nutrigenomics and personalised health with over 15 years of experience in the area. She began her career as a research scientist focusing on folate metabolism, methylation and DNA damage in relation to pregnancy health. Over the years her research expanded covering vitamin D, immune markers, and oxidative stress.Additional Info:In this episode, I make reference to two papers. The first is the focus of our discussion:Ponti, G., Pastorino, L., Manfredini, M., Ozben, T., Oliva, G., Kaleci, S., Iannella, R. and Tomasi, A. Tonight on Dr. Dean’s weekly radio show she will be joined by Dr. Thomas Levy. Dr. Levy is a board certified cardiologist and bar certified attorney and also a member of the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service [OMNS], a wire-service style news feed that informs the media and citizenry about the advances in the life-saving practices of vitamin therapy. As member of the editorial board for the OMNS, Dr. Carolyn Dean is privy to the inside track and discussion of emerging trends, research and practices surrounding vitamin therapy and recently, most particularly focused on Vitamin C and its relationship to treatment and infection. Tonight, Dr. Levy will join Dr. Dean for a thoughtful, leading-edge conversation about the developments emerging as a result of medical experience gained as vitamin C is used in the fight against COVID-19. Please tune in to our LIVE call-in radio talk show to learn more. Dr. Levy is a board-certified cardiologist and a bar-certified attorney. After practicing adult cardiology for 15 years, he began to research the enormous toxicity associated with much dental work, as well as the pronounced ability of properly-administered vitamin C to neutralize this toxicity. He has now written eleven books, with several addressing the wide-ranging properties of vitamin C in neutralizing all toxins and resolving most infections, as well as its vital role in the effective treatment of heart disease and cancer. Others address the important roles of dental toxicity and nutrition in disease and health. His ongoing research involves documenting that all diseases are different forms and degrees of focal scurvy, arising from increased oxidative stress, especially intracellularly, and that they all benefit from protocols that optimize the antioxidant levels in the body. He regularly gives lectures on this information at medical conferences around the world and is the author of at least 12 books on health and wellness. In addition to Dr. Levy, Dr. Dean was joined by Dr. Michael J. Gonzalez and Dr. Mignone Mary~ Dr. Michael Gonzalez is Professor at the Nutrition Program, School of Public Health in the Medical Sciences Campus, University of Puerto Rico. Dr. Mignonne Mary continues to spread the reach of the Mary family’s approach to wellness, disease prevention and recovery. Her passion for the benefits of infusion therapy began with her father and have since developed through years of her own practice and continued education. The Mary family’s innovative approach to wellness and recovery has changed thousands of people’s lives and continues to grow each year.
