In this episode, I am speaking with Chris Masterjohn, PhD, a top expert in nutritional biochemistry about the conclusions he has reached over years of studying the subject of optimal nutrition. As an expert in his field, this podcast is for anyone who cares about their mitochondria, their health and their body composition.
What does it mean to grow old? Put another way, what are the hallmarks of aging? They are questions that have long since intrigued biologists and longevity researchers, with a wide range of theories about what drives the aging process. We understand the impact of weaker muscles, frailty, cognitive challenges and greying hair, but it is the underlying factors - molecular and cellular mechanisms - that researchers are striving to understand. Dr. Davide D'Amico, Research and Development Group Leader with the Swiss cellular nutrition brand, Timeline Nutrition, is studying how compounds derived from plants can be used to reverse muscle decline and boost mitochondrial health. In this conversation we cover:- The 'hallmarks of aging,' which refers to the key features of human aging, such as genomic instability and mitochondrial dysfunction.- How the understanding of aging is not simply a chronological process, but also includes the concept of biological aging and the potential for reversing or slowing down this process.- The potential benefits of supplementing with Urolithin A, a compound found in certain foods that can improve mitochondrial health and reduce inflammation.- The importance of muscle strength and physical health in promoting longevity and preventing age-related diseases.- How the ability to convert the precursor molecules found in plants into beneficial compounds like Urolithin A can vary among individuals and is influenced by the diversity and composition of their gut microbiome.- The potential benefits of Urolithin A for the immune system, cartilage health, and overall mobility and quality of life in older adults.- The importance of personalized approaches to health and longevity, with a focus on maintaining quality of life rather than simply extending lifespan.- The overall goal of preventing age-related diseases, supporting optimal health, and promoting a compressed morbidity, where the period of decline in health near the end of life is relatively short.- The need for education and awareness about lifestyle interventions for healthy aging, involving doctors, researchers, politicians, and educators.-DISCOUNTMitopure (a highly pure form of Urolithin A) boosts the health of our mitochondria – the battery packs of our cells – and improves muscle strength. Review us at: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/itunes http://justinhealth.com/itunes Description: In this enlightening discussion, Dr. Justin Marchegiani and Dr. Bernd Friedlander delve deep into the pivotal role of mitochondria and sunlight in maintaining optimal health. Dr. Friedlander underscores the significance of the mitochondria, our cell's powerhouse, attributing improved sleep, reduced disease, and enhanced overall health to its proper function. He highlights the critical influence of sunlight in life's evolution on Earth and its symbiotic relationship with mitochondria. However, the contemporary world isn't without its health pitfalls. Dr. Friedlander cautions against the adverse health implications of prevalent technologies, such as computers, cell phones, and Wi-Fi. Their frequencies, vastly differing from the human body's natural Schumann Hertz at 7.83 Hertz, pose potential risks to our cognitive and physical well-being. Emphasizing the rejuvenating power of natural light, both physicians recommend basking in morning and afternoon sunlight to realign our body's circadian rhythm, boost healing, and potentially thwart specific ailments. The conversation also touches upon collagen's indispensable role in our health, from skin sustenance to muscular and skeletal support. They underscore the merits of collagen supplementation, particularly from superior sources, and its integral role in athletic prowess and recuperation. Dr. Friedlander champions a holistic health approach: prioritizing outdoor activities, indulging in a nutrient-rich diet emphasizing proteins and fats, and minimizing contact with detrimental technologies. The overarching theme? Nature and our interaction with it often house the remedy. In this journal club episode, my guest is Stanford and Johns Hopkins-trained physician, Dr. Peter Attia, M.D., who is also the host of The Drive podcast and the author of the bestselling book "Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity." We each present a scientific paper and discuss the findings' strengths, weaknesses and actionable takeaways. First, we discuss an article that addresses whether taking the drug metformin can enhance longevity. Then, we discuss an article on belief effects (similar to placebo effects), showing how the effects of a drug on the brain and cognition depend on one's belief about the dose of the drug taken, not the actual dose. Our conversation also highlights how to read, interpret and critique scientific studies. This episode ought to be of interest to those curious about health and longevity, medicine and psychology and for anyone seeking to better understand how to read and digest scientific findings. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Catharine Arnston. Catharine Arnston is the Founder and CEO of ENERGYbits® and an expert on the health benefits of algae. Catharine's passion for algae is contagious. She has been a speaker at hundreds of conferences, podcasts, broadcasts, and national television. Her scientific fluency allows her to explain algae with such simplicity and clarity that it quickly becomes apparent why algae are urgently needed. Algae is the most nutritionally dense food globally, yet it is virtually unknown outside Asia. Catharine's mission is to change that. In this episode, Catharine opens the show by speaking about the importance of superoxide dismutase (S.O.D.) for clearing free radicals. The highest concentration of S.O.D. is actually in spirulina. Catharine explains how spirulina could be the missing piece to improving the health of your mitochondria. Plus, Catharine speaks about all the other health benefits of algae. Tune in as we chat about using algae as a biohack before red light therapy and how algae can replace your mineral supplements. Text me the words "Podcast" +1 (786) 364-5002 to be added to my contacts list. [01:30] The Importance of Superoxide Dismutase (S.O.D.) For Clearing Free Radicals Spirulina is an effortless way to get the nutrients you need to give you energy. The true energy that you get from spirulina is really at the cellular level. When your cells have energy, you're getting better digestion, reduced inflammation, more free radicals, and you can think clearer. Inside the mitochondria is a second membrane where ATP production occurs. Virtually no antioxidants can make their way into that inner membrane. There's nothing that can make its way into the inner membrane to get rid of those free radicals except something called S.O.D. The highest concentration of S.O.D. is in spirulina. [13:00] Spirulina Could Be The Missing Piece To Getting The Mitochondria To Function Better Spirulina is called cyanobacterial; they are your mitochondria. Mitochondria in our cells came from the cyanobacteria, effectively spirulina. When you have spirulina, it's like introducing your body to itself. If you look at the shape of spirulina and you look at the mitochondria, they are identical. When you take something identical to your DNA, your body knows what to do. [17:50] How Chlorophyll Can Heal Cellular Damage Inside The Body When you have free radicals, they cause what's called oxidative stress. Oxidative stress will cause cellular damage. With cellular damage, nutrients cannot flow into the cells, and toxins cannot flow out of the cells. So, you will end up with more free radicals inside the cell, causing severe damage. Eventually, this can cause rogue cells, leading to cancer. Chlorella and spirulina are excellent at correcting that because they have the highest chlorophyll concentration in the world. Healthy fats will heal your cell walls. Chlorophyll is a fat-based pigment. [23:25] The Reasons You Should Take Algae Instead of Fish Oil Spirulina is higher in GLA and omegas than fish oil. Fish get their omegas from algae. So cut out the middle man by going straight to the algae. Algae is cleaner, and it doesn't go any farther down the food chain. Plus, it is already rancid by the time you get fish oil from the store. With Catharine's algae, you'll get anti-inflammatory benefits. Also, it never goes rancid, and it never goes bad. [32:30] Does Algae Increase Your Glucose Levels? Algae do not decrease your ketones, and it does not increase your glucose. Catharine has tested it herself with people who have CGM monitors. Algae has been used for decades for people who have diabetes. Catharine's products are taken by people looking to reverse their diabetes. Unfortunately, we know more about our cell phones than we do our bodies. When something goes wrong, people run to conventional medical sources. Instead, we need to learn how our body functions and what it requires to function at an optimal level. [37:50] You Can't Have An Iron Overload When Taking Spirulina or Chlorella The nice thing about algae is that it's what's called an adaptogen. It won't be absorbed in your body if you do not need that nutrient. However, this is not the case with iron supplements. Catharine urges people not to take iron supplements because you can easily get overloaded with iron. The iron in the spirulina or chlorella comes from an organic source. So, your body can recognize it and know what to do with it. [39:20] Taking Algae Can Replace Your Mineral Supplements Spirulina and chlorella are loaded with minerals like magnesium and potassium. When your body makes S.O.D, it needs manganese, zinc, and copper. All of these minerals are in spirulina. Many people will use chlorella because it helps recover your health and helps remove toxins. Take chlorella for detox instead of activated charcoal. Activated charcoal will pull out all minerals, not just the bad stuff. [41:20] Algae Is A Great Biohack Before Red Light Therapy Red light therapy stimulates mitochondrial growth; it also reduces inflammation. Bacteria have chloroplasts in them, and they generate energy from light. When you take spirulina or chlorella before red light therapy, you stimulate the mitochondria even more. Today, I am blessed to have here with me the Founder of The Energy Blueprint, Ari Whitten. He is an energy and fatigue specialist who focuses on taking an evidence-based approach to energy enhancement, a nutrition, exercise, and natural health expert, and a #1 best-selling author. He has been studying nutrition and holistic health for over two decades. He has a Bachelor of Science from San Diego State University in Kinesiology (specializing in fitness, nutrition, and health). He also has a background in exercise physiology and fitness and holds two advanced certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist. In addition, he recently completed the three years of coursework for his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, an education which rounds out all aspects – nutrition, fitness, and psychology – of his approach to optimal health. Ari is a tireless researcher who has obsessively devoted the last 20 years of his life to the pursuit of being on the cutting edge of the science of health and energy enhancement. For the last six years, he's been working with many of the top scientists and physicians on the planet to develop the most comprehensive program in the world on the science of overcoming fatigue and increasing energy — The Energy Blueprint. In this episode, Ari first speaks about his Epstein Barr Virus diagnosis and how that took him down a rabbit hole of energy optimization. One way to improve chronic fatigue is by growing more mitochondria; Ari explains how this is possible. Then, Ari dives into melatonin and tips for fixing a circadian rhythm disruption. Tune in as we chat about the importance of hormetic stressors, Eat For Energy, and Ari's products from The Energy Blueprint. [00:45] Ari Speaks About Epstein Barr Virus and His Obsession With Energy Optimization Ari has been studying health science his whole life. Unfortunately, Ari got very sick with Epstein Barr Virus and mononucleosis in his mid-twenties. He lost about thirty-five pounds in the span of a month; he couldn't eat because the back of his throat was so swollen. Ari was left with chronic fatigue; it shifted his entire life. So, Ari started to focus on the world of energy optimization; he became obsessed with energy science. Conventional medical doctors had no information to offer Ari. After doing research, Ari found that science actually does not support the idea that adrenal fatigue is a significant cause of chronic fatigue. Well, Ari realized that no one truly understands what is causing fatigue. [08:45] The Key To Overcoming Fatigue Is Growing More Mitochondria Finding ways to grow more mitochondria and strengthen your mitochondria is a massive key to the puzzle of overcoming fatigue. The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell. We are taught to think of mitochondria as these mindless energy generators. Something you may not know is the mitochondria have a dual role beyond energy production, which is just as important as their role in energy production. The mitochondria also help with energy regulation. Your energy levels are a function of the degree to which your mitochondria decide if you're safe or if you're under attack. [17:50] Hormetic Stressors Will Make Your Mitochondria Bigger and Stronger Hormetic stress is how a transient metabolic stressor works to stimulate beneficial adaptations that ultimately increase resilience and resistance in the face of a broad range of other stressors. Basically, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. By exposing yourself to moderate stressors within your body's capacity, you make your body more robust and more resistant. Hormetic stressors are vital for challenging our mitochondria and stimulating them in a way that makes them bigger and stronger. [27:30] Is Your Body Under Attack? Your Brain Will Create Sickness Behavior When cells are under attack, they shift all their resources to defense mode. Cells will go into defense mode to protect themselves. They also go into defense mode as an evolutionary adaptive mechanism to help the body's energy and resources be redirected towards defending against the threat. When we have lots of immune activation and elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines, the brain responds by also creating sickness behavior, which includes fatigue. When your brain creates sickness behavior, it protects you from over-expending energy and depleting resources. [42:40] The Importance of Melatonin: What You Need To Know You get 50 to 70 percent suppression of melatonin secretion by the brain in the evenings due to simply being in a typical home under standard indoor home lighting. Melatonin is a vital hormone for protecting your mitochondria and protecting your brain's neurons. If you're chronically suppressing melatonin at the cellular level, you will have chronic melatonin deficiency. Sadly, melatonin doesn't get the respect that it deserves. [1:05:15] Ari Is Hypersensitive To Melatonin Supplements - Are You? Ari is hypersensitive to melatonin if he takes it in supplement form. After polling his audience, about 25% of people are sensitive to melatonin. People who take melatonin for a significant time will sleep poorly after coming off of it. It will take people a few days for sleep to normalize without taking melatonin. AND MUCH MORE!
