Dr. Martin Picard, PhD, is a professor of behavioral medicine at Columbia University and an expert on how our behaviors and psychology shape cellular energy production and rates of aging. He explains that your mitochondria don't just “make energy”; they translate what you do—your mindset and your relationships—into the energy you experience as vitality or lack thereof. He explains how exercise, nutrition, sleep, meditation, and even certain thought patterns and our sense of purpose can charge our cells like batteries. He also shares findings that hair greying is the result of cellular stress and is reversible. This episode links physical and mental ‘energy' with cellular energy and provides science-supported tools to improve your physical and mental health. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. Watch the FULL podcast here: https://youtu.be/7kfykswH6IoWhy is zone two training so important for mitochondrial health? It's linked with improvements in fat oxidation and lactate clearance, which are used as surrogates of mitochondrial function in sports science. This clip explores how different exercise intensities drive distinct metabolic responses, why athletes are useful models for understanding cellular energy, and how laboratory testing with metabolic carts and lactate measurements led to practical training zones from easy efforts to sprints. I'm exploring with my guest how zone two work consistently improved fat oxidation and lactate clearance in testing, while higher intensities remain essential for performance and VO2, since competitions are decided at the top end. Here, I'm discussing the balance between building a metabolically efficient engine at the mitochondrial level with zone two, and training the “turbo” at zones four and five plus sprint work for race demands, all in clear, everyday language you can apply. As a nutritionist and health communicator, my aim is to translate these lab insights into practical training decisions that respect both mitochondrial function and cardiorespiratory adaptations.***This episode is sponsored by: NOWATCH: Health tracking reimaginedKnow your body, trust yourself.15% off with code LWBW15 at nowatch.com***Sign up to Sarah's Compassionate Cure newsletter: Science Simplified, Health Humanised. In this episode of Creating Your Ageless Future, Regan Archibald delivers a powerful deep dive into the science of body composition, metabolic aging, and the peptides reshaping modern regenerative medicine. He breaks down the “Ageless Axis”—the brain, muscle, and heart—and explains how blood sugar, inflammation, mitochondrial function, and visceral fat determine how quickly we age. Regan shares emerging breakthroughs in GLP-1s, Tesamorelin, CJC-1295, AOD9604, and the “Wolverine stack” (BPC-157 + TB500), and reveals how peptides act as metabolic reset systems rather than dependency-forming drugs. Along the way, he celebrates real client transformations, exposes misconceptions about weight loss drugs, explains why muscle is the antidote to gravity, and updates listeners on new Ageless Future pharmacy innovations. If you're over 40 and have been told your ovarian reserve is low, you've likely heard things like your only option is IVF with donor eggs or your time has run out. But those statements rarely tell the full story. In today's episode, Improve Ovarian Reserve to Get Pregnant After 40, we explore what ovarian reserve actually measures, why it does not define your fertility potential, and how a functional fertility approach can support egg quality, hormone communication, and your chances of pregnancy, whether naturally or with IVF. Even after 40, your body can respond when you understand the underlying imbalances that influence ovarian function. You'll learn • What AMH, FSH, and AFC truly indicate and why they don't measure egg quality • How mitochondrial energy, nutrient levels, and antioxidants influence egg development after 40 • The role of thyroid health and why optimal TSH should be below 2.0 when trying to conceive • How gut infections, immune dysregulation, and vaginal microbiome imbalances affect ovarian reserve • Which functional tests help uncover hidden imbalances that impact egg potential, including GI MAP, DUTCH, GrowBaby, and HTMA This episode is especially for you if: • You are 40 or older and have been told your AMH is low or your FSH is high • You have experienced failed IVF cycles, early loss, or poor egg quality and want to know what else you can do • You want a functional fertility framework that looks at hormone communication, egg energy, and whole body imbalances rather than just chasing lab numbers Next Steps in Your Fertility Journey Subscribe to Get Pregnant Naturally for evidence-based guidance on functional fertility, and share this episode with anyone on their fertility journey. Is your body running on broken engines? We often obsess over what we eat, but we rarely think about how our cells process that fuel. If your mitochondria (the engines of your cells) are dysfunctional, it doesn't matter how perfect your diet is—you will feel tired, you will recover slowly, and you will age faster. In this episode, we sit down with Brad Currier, a PhD in muscle physiology and scientist at Timeline, to discuss Urolithin A—the breakthrough molecule that acts as a "recycling program" for your cells. Brad reveals why natural food sources are virtually impossible to rely on (you'd need to drink 1.5 liters of juice daily), how this molecule compares to fasting for longevity, and the shocking data coming out of studies with Olympic athletes. In this episode, you will learn:The "Junkyard" Theory: Why mitochondrial dysfunction is the root cause of low energy and poor recovery.Mitophagy Explained: How to trigger the selective breakdown of "zombie" mitochondria to build fresh, healthy ones. The Pomegranate Reality Check: Why you can't eat your way to therapeutic levels of Urolithin A (and the sugar cost of trying).Fasting vs. MitoPure: The difference between "global" starvation (fasting) and "surgical" cellular repair.Olympic Secrets: How elite runners are using this specific protocol to lower perceived exertion and muscle damage. The Future of Longevity: How this impacts not just muscle, but skin, immune health, and cognitive function.Timeline Mitopure Gummies: GET 20% Off Now!

In Episode 175 of the Fit Mother Project Podcast, Dr. A talks with neuroscientist and MitoQ Chief Science Officer Dr. Siobhan Mitchell about one of the most powerful — and overlooked — drivers of women's health after 40: mitochondrial function. She shares how her grandmother's Alzheimer's diagnosis inspired her career and why the latest science points to mitochondria, oxidative stress, and “inflammaging” as core players in memory, energy, and healthy aging. You'll learn how exercise, smart intervals, fasting, MCT oils, CoQ10, vitamin C, and mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants like MitoQ can help your cells produce cleaner energy, recover faster, and better protect your brain, heart, and muscles. Dr. Mitchell also breaks down what human studies actually show about MitoQ and other mitochondrial supports like PQQ, NAC, and NAD boosters. If you're a busy mom or midlife woman who wants steady energy, clearer thinking, and stronger training results without burning out your system, this conversation will give you a science-backed roadmap.Key TakeawaysMitochondria = powerhouses and “CEOs” of the cellOxidative stress & “inflammaging” drive faster agingBalance matters: not too much, not too little mitochondrial activityExercise (especially intervals) trains mitochondrial resilienceFasting & ketones trigger autophagy and longevity pathwaysMCTs (especially C8/C10) support ketones and brain functionCoQ10 is essential but poorly delivered into mitochondria via standard supplementsMitoQ = mitochondria-targeted CoQ10 derivative with human dataStudies: better power output, recovery, and less exercise-induced DNA damageVitamin C, magnesium, B12 often need supplement support with ageNAC, PQQ, NAD boosters, and urolithin A: promising but mixed dataNo magic bullets: stack smart supplements on top of fundamentalsMore About MitoQ and Dr. Siobhan MitchellWebsite: https://www.mitoq.com/Use code FITFAMILY at checkout for 10% off your purchaseFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MitoQ/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mitoq/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/MitoQHealthX: https://twitter.com/Mito_QTik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mitoqPodcast: Cell Me About It https://open.spotify.com/show/2Bbc0Oi5ypbui2voVpnCxf?si=40f849b961d041ffDr. Siobhan Mitchell's Email: smitchell@mitoq.comBiographical Information on Dr. Siobhan MitchellDr. Siobhan Mitchell, PhD is the chief scientific officer of MitoQ with over 25 years of research experience in how nutrition impacts brain aging, metabolic health, and longevity. A Parenting Resource for Children’s Behavior and Mental Health
Parenting a child who goes from calm to chaos in seconds can feel exhausting. You try everything—deep breaths, gentle words, even walking away—and still, the meltdowns come. You're not alone. When kids struggle with big emotions, there's often a hidden root cause inside the body—and minerals play a much bigger role than most parents realize. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Aaron Hartman to unpack the powerful connection between minerals, mitochondria, and meltdowns—and how nutrition, lifestyle, and nervous system regulation can help your child regain balance and calm. Why does my child melt down when they're “just tired or hungry”?When your child seems to unravel at the smallest thing, it's not bad behavior—it's biology. Mineral imbalances directly affect how their nervous system fires.Low magnesium or zinc deficiency can make the brain more reactive to stress. When blood sugar drops from skipping meals or eating too many processed foods, the body burns through nutrients fast—leading to irritability, anxiety, or panic attacks.A deficient diet full of additives and low in whole foods affects serotonin, dopamine, and other key neurotransmitters. When we calm the brain first and nourish the body, meltdowns start to fade.Takeaway: A balanced diet rich in real food, protein, and calming minerals helps stabilize your child's emotions and energy.Need quick relief while you work on those root causes? Try Quick Calm—my proven method to calm the brain fast so you and your child can reset and start fresh.Could my child's mood swings be linked to mineral deficiencies?Absolutely. Research continues to show how essential minerals affect mental well-being and brain function. Here's what parents need to know:Zinc deficiency is linked with attention deficit disorder (ADD/ADHD), depression, and poor immune function.Magnesium supports relaxation and sleep by calming overactive neurons.B vitamins and vitamin D play a critical role in serotonin production—affecting mood and focus.Too much copper or exposure to heavy metals can worsen anxiety, aggression, and brain fog.HTMA testing (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) can reveal these hidden imbalances, helping you target the root cause instead of chasing symptoms.
This week I explore the revolutionary Rice Diet study conducted by Walter Kempner in 1958, which documented the reversal of diabetes and diabetic blindness using a simple diet of white rice, fruit, and sugar. It challenges conventional medical beliefs and highlights the significance of Kempner's findings in the context of diabetes treatment.Kempner W, Peschel RL, Schlayer C. The Sympathetic Spiral of Doom drains your mitochondria. Here's how to rebuild energy from within.
Every so often, I have a conversation that stays with me long after the recording ends — not because it's dramatic, but because it quietly shifts how I understand the body and the brain. This episode is one of those conversations.Today on the Kick Sugar Coach Podcast, I'm talking with Dallin Hardy, a biochemist from Hardy Nutritionals, about something most of us were never taught: how deeply the brain and our mitochondria depend on micronutrients to function well, and what happens when those nutrients get depleted. (And best of all, how 60 peer-reviewed studies show we CAN replenish them. This interview will tell you how.)Dallin has a gift for translating complex biochemistry into everyday language. He shares the story behind their well-known formula, Daily Essential Nutrients, why researchers keep studying it, and what he sees every day working with people who are rebuilding their mental health from the inside out.Episode HighlightsWhat happens to energy (ATP) production when micronutrients are lowHow to dramatically improve mitochondrial function Why sugar depletes the body of needed nutrients and how to replenish themHow micronutrients can improve ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder, stress, and sleepThe unexpected findings in pregnancy and infant developmentIf you've ever felt like your energy, focus, or emotional resilience wasn't matching the effort you're putting into your health… this episode offers a different way to look at it. Sometimes the body isn't malfunctioning. It's just missing what it needs. I think one graphic in particular, where Dallin details all the micronutrients needed to produce clean, efficient energy in our cells, will take your breath away. It did mine.*Click here to watch the slideshttps://youtu.be/5547H6I4WYQ?si=ojtSyd4JHBOcx6dDEnjoyed this episode? I receive a lot of health questions about how to remedy various debilitating conditions. One of the more concerning questions I receive frequently is regarding kidney failure. Why is there an epidemic of people with failing kidney function? It comes down to mitochondria dysfunction. Instead of focusing in one one study like most health educators do, my goal with these short shows is to paint broad strokes and cover the entire subject from a birds eye view all the way down to the mitochondrial level. Most importantly, as I cover various health conditions in future episodes, I will focus very heavily on the solutions, citing research and mechanisms to back up each of the proposed supplements or protocols. In the case of the kidneys, it comes down to one protein: mitochondrial transcription factor A, or TFAM. When that critical protein inside mitochondria in your kidneys becomes deficient, energy production falls and tissue function decreases, hence, kidney failure. It always comes back to mitochondria. CRISPR-based gene editing has revolutionized modern biology, but these tools are unable to access the DNA that resides inside mitochondria. Researchers are eager to access and edit this DNA to understand more about the energy production and the mutations that can cause incurable mitochondrial diseases.Because CRISPR can't help with these problems, researchers have been looking for other ways to precisely edit the mitochrondrial genome. And the past few years have brought some success — if researchers can make editing safe and accurate enough, it could eventually be used to treat, and even cure, these genetic conditions. This is an audio version of our Feature: Faulty mitochondria cause deadly diseases — fixing them is about to get a lot easier Hosted on Acast. Send us a textIntegration of brain metabolism with neural signaling, highlighting how core metabolites regulate energy use and protect neurons.Topics Discussed:Brain energy efficiency: Brains are much more energy-efficient than computers for similar processing, relying on adaptive metabolic strategies evolved under energy scarcity.Metabolism vs. information processing: Core metabolites like glutamate bridge basic cellular energy production and neural signaling.Lactate as a signal: Produced during exercise, lactate diffuses from muscles to brain, modulating neuronal excitability and providing neuroprotection.BHB in ketosis: During fasting or ketogenic diets, beta-hydroxybutyrate displaces glucose as fuel, enhances antioxidant defenses, and activates protective potassium channels in neurons.Adenosine and sleep: Accumulates from ATP breakdown during wakefulness, triggering sleep and locally inhibiting overactive neural networks for energy conservation.Glial cells' role: Astrocytes and oligodendrocytes handle sophisticated metabolism, release signaling molecules like lactate, and modulate synapses, and influence diseases like Alzheimer's.Practical Takeaways:Regular exercise elevates lactate, which signals the brain to adapt metabolism and may enhance neuroprotection against stress.Intermittent fasting or ketogenic diets can induce ketosis with BHB, potentially boosting brain antioxidant defenses and preconditioning against metabolic stress.Prioritizing sleep helps clear adenosine buildup, restoring energy balance and supporting long-term neural health.About the guest: Dr. Luis Felipe Barros, MD, PhD is a Chilean neurobiologist and professor at the Universidad de Valparaíso, where he leads a lab studying brain metabolism from glucose transport to mitochondrial function.Related Episode:M&M 255 | Unlocking Energy: How Nutrition & Drugs Impact Your Mitochondria | Chris Masterjohn*Not medical advice.Support the showAffiliates: Lumen device to optimize your metabolism for weight loss or athletic performance. Good morning, everyone! In this powerful and eye-opening episode, David DeHaas from Living Waters Wellness Center—where miracles begin by healing from within—dives deep into one of the most vital yet misunderstood parts of the human body: the mitochondria. These tiny powerhouses inside every cell are what keep your heart pumping, brain thinking, and body thriving. But when your mitochondria become damaged or sluggish due to toxins, constipation, and inflammation, your energy plummets, and disease begins to take hold.Today's show is all about understanding how your mitochondria and inflammation are connected—and how you can take control of your body's natural healing power starting from the inside out. Most people focus on symptoms, but David reveals that true healing begins at the mitochondrial level—inside the tiny power plants of your cells. When your colon and small intestine are congested, nutrients can't reach your cells, toxins can't escape, and your mitochondria lose the energy to keep you healthy. This leads to oxidative stress, free radical damage, and inflammation that impact your brain, heart, and immune system.Through colon hydrotherapy, you can clear out toxins, restore nutrient flow, and recharge your mitochondria—igniting natural healing from within.David also explains:How glucose becomes ATP, your body's energy fuelHow antioxidants like Vitamins C & E fight aging and oxidative stressWhy mitochondrial health drives brain clarity, heart function, and vitalityAnd how cleansing and nutrition restore your body's natural energyIt's not just about feeling better—it's about healing your mitochondria and eliminating inflammation so your body can thrive again. If you're tired, inflamed, or feeling drained, it's time to start healing at the cellular level. How does the diagnosis affect the disease? In this 2-part episode, Dr. Lara Varden interviews Dr. Jacob Liberman. Dr. Jacob Israel Liberman is a pioneer in the fields of light, vision and consciousness, and the author of Luminous Life: How The Science Of Light Unlocks The Art Of Living, Light: Medicine Of The Future, Take Off Your Glasses And See, and Wisdom From An Empty Mind. Originally trained as an optometrist and vision scientist, his life changed in 1976 after the miraculous healing of his own eyesight, leading him to a deeper understanding of light and the science of life. Having helped countless individuals recover their eyesight, he began to understand the words of Jonathan Swift, “Real vision is the ability to see the invisible.”Last week, Dr. Liberman explained how consciousness often affects our outlook and way of life whether or not we allow the diagnosis to define us or to allow us to figure out our next steps. He focused on telling stories of his experiences training optometrists about light and vision, and how it has transformed his life for the better. This week we learn of how light and different hues of color affect our health. This involves not just the presence of light but as well as complete darkness. Dr. Liberman and Dr. Lara also dive into how the perception of light even to those who don't have sight matters as it affects more than just vision such as our biological clock, how different parts of our body respond, and If you wish to learn more from Dr. Jacob Liberman, you may do so through the following channels:Website: https://www.jacobliberman.org______________________________________________________Keep yourself up to date on The DNA Talks Podcast! Send us a textMitochondrial fatty acid synthesis is a little-known but essential pathway that supports energy production and metabolic health.Summary: Dr. Sara Nowinski explains how mitochondria not only burn fuels to make ATP but also synthesize their own fatty acids inside the matrix; this conserved pathway produces lipoic acid (an essential enzyme cofactor) and longer-chain fats required for proper assembly of the electron transport chain, and disrupting it impairs respiration, glucose handling, and insulin sensitivity while enhancing it appears protective against obesity and heart injury.About the guest: Sara Nowinski, PhD is an assistant professor in the Department of Metabolism and Nutritional Programming at Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where since 2021 she has led a lab focused on mitochondrial biology and the mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis (mitoFAS) pathway.Topics Discussed:Basic mitochondrial energy production: food → pyruvate/fatty acids → acetyl-CoA → TCA cycle → electron transport chain → ATPMitochondrial fatty acid synthesis (mitoFAS): a bacterial-like pathway that builds fats on an acyl carrier protein inside the matrixLipoic acid: an 8-carbon fatty acid made only by mitoFAS, covalently attached to key enzymes (e.g., pyruvate dehydrogenase); cannot be rescued by supplements for cofactor useLonger mitoFAS products (14–16 carbons) stabilize electron transport chain assembly factors, explaining why pathway loss collapses respiration even when lipoic acid is intactKnocking out mitoFAS causes embryonic lethality, insulin resistance, poor glucose homeostasis, and a rare neurodegenerative disorder (MEPAN syndrome)Overexpressing the mitochondrial acyl carrier protein protects mice from diet-induced obesity, insulin resistance, and cardiac injuryMuscle cell differentiation fails without mitoFAS, hinting at a role in tissue development and repairPractical Takeaways:Supplemental lipoic acid can act as an antioxidant but cannot replace the lipoic acid your mitochondria must make themselves for enzyme function.Severe impairment of mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis is linked to insulin resistance and metabolic disruption, suggesting mitochondrial health (beyond just biogenesis) matters for glucose control.Lifestyle or future therapies that boost overall mitochondrial function (e.g., exercise via PGC-1α) may indirectly support tSupport the showAffiliates: Lumen device to optimize your metabolism for weight loss or athletic performance.
