Is group fitness helping or hurting your body composition goals? In this Fitness Friday episode on the Habits and Hustle podcast, Liron and I dive into the controversial world of group fitness classes like Orange Theory, Barry's Bootcamp, and F45. We discuss why these high-intensity classes can spike your appetite, burn out your adrenals, and leave you injured—plus what's actually working in the group fitness space. We also explore the rise of Hyrox as a better alternative to CrossFit, why Pilates shouldn't be your only workout, and the social benefits that keep people coming back despite the drawbacks. Liron Kayvan founded BFLA in 2019. He's a NASM Certified Group Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, and Transformative Life Coach. Liron has competed in Amateur MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Rugby and has been a Fitness Coach for over 10 years. What we discuss: The rise and reality of group fitness popularity Why Barry's Bootcamp can spike cortisol and appetite The "aimless running around" problem in most classes Hyrox vs. CrossFit: A safer group fitness alternative Why Pilates alone won't change your body composition The social benefits that make group fitness worthwhile When group fitness works vs. when it backfires The importance of having specific fitness goals Why "something is better than nothing" still applies How to choose group fitness that actually serves your goals Thank you to our sponsor: Therasage: Head over to therasage.com and use code Be Bold for 15% off TruNiagen: Head over to truniagen.com and use code HUSTLE20 to get $20 off any purchase over $100. In this powerful and raw episode, Brad sits down with special guest Paul Casey, whose story of redemption will leave you inspired and fired up to take full ownership of your life. Paul spent 10 consecutive years in some of the toughest prisons in the California Department of Corrections. But instead of letting that time break him, Paul used it as fuel for transformation. Toward the tail end of his sentence, he got sober, dove into fitness and nutrition, and began helping others with their macros and training—all from behind bars. Upon release, Paul wasted no time jumping headfirst into the fitness industry—training clients at Orangetheory and leading group fitness classes. Today, he's the proud owner of The Better You, a thriving personal training business in the Bay Area offering private and group coaching. We talk about: What prison really taught him about discipline and character How fitness and sobriety became his anchor The mindset it takes to turn rock bottom into a launching pad His transition from incarceration to entrepreneurship Why daily habits and structure are non-negotiable in building a better life Paul's story is proof that your past does not define you—and that with purpose, discipline, and a vision, you can rewrite yours. In this episode, we're joined by Deb Strougo, longtime industry veteran in the HALO sector. Deb shares her insights both as a seasoned consumer and advisor, exploring the current and future landscape of fitness. Pete and Deb dive deep into the experience and inner workings of high-end clubs like Bay Club, weighing their offerings and discussing the evolving needs of today's customer. As Deb articulates the growing importance of holistic wellness and the cultural shifts in exercise preferences, she provides a unique perspective on how fitness businesses can thrive. Listen now to learn how to navigate the ever-changing dynamics of the industry and the collaborative potential between new entrants and established players. Whether you're a fitness entrepreneur, industry insider, or just passionate about health, this conversation has a ton of valuable takeaways. With regards to empowering fitness choices and the need to provide more diverse options Deb states, "In the Pilates space for example, you're seeing a lot of women that are interested in getting more fit, but in a low impact sort of way. They're not into the whole HIIT thing. Some may have had fertility related issues, and so they are looking in other directions." Key themes discussed HALO Academy promotion & consumer insights Boutique studio vs. big class experience Bay Club's competitive edge Orange Theory franchises in big gyms Enhancing group exercise programs Innovative membership solutions in fitness Brand differentiation & daily performance Thriving versus struggling businesses insight Consulting Deborah for industry insights A few key takeaways: 1. Holistic Approach to Fitness: Deborah emphasizes the growing trend toward the holistic human being, which involves not just physical fitness but also aspects of nutrition, sleep, and overall well-being. Fitness centers are increasingly integrating these components to cater to the complete lifestyle needs of their clients. 2. Boutique vs. Big Box Gyms: Deborah discusses the advantages and challenges of boutique fitness studios compared to larger gyms. While big box gyms like Bay Clubs have extensive amenities and services, boutiques offer a personalized, intimate experience that many consumers also value. 3. Pilates Popularity: Strougo highlights the increasing demand for Pilates as people seek lower-impact, effective workout options. This trend is driven by the modality's adaptability to different fitness needs, from mobility to strengthening, making it a staple in many fitness routines. 4. Franchising Challenges: Deb and Pete also shed light on the complexities of franchising within the HALO space. Successful franchises need to balance innovation and operational consistency, and both franchisors and franchisees must work together to optimize business models and cater to local markets effectively. 5. Industry Insights and Networking: Deborah stresses the importance of leveraging industry knowledge and networking with experienced professionals when entering the fitness space. Understanding historical successes and failures can guide a new entrant or existing business in evolving effectively and avoiding common pitfalls. Click here to download transcript. In this podcast episode, Casie Ludemann discusses her experiences as a busy mom while balancing priorities such as fitness, family, and her podcast. She emphasizes the importance of making health and fitness a consistent priority, even if it means adjusting the focus from time to time. She addresses common misconceptions about workouts, particularly those related to trendy classes like Orange Theory and F45, arguing that while these can be enjoyable, they might not produce the long-term results people seek.Casie explains that building muscle and achieving a toned physique requires progressive overload through consistent strength training, rather than constantly changing workouts. She encourages listeners to consider their fitness goals seriously and to prioritize strength training, viewing classes as supplementary rather than central to their fitness routine.Throughout the episode, she highlights the pivotal role of nutrition in achieving fitness goals, asserting that exercise alone is insufficient without proper dietary habits. Casie concludes with a call for listeners to seek education and professional guidance in their health journey, while maintaining a supportive community around them for motivation.Let's keep it real, tackle the chaos of life, and make those resolutions stick—one rant at a time!

An interview with Devin Lebrun, SVP Innovation & Strategic Partnerships, and MV Shook, Healthcare & Innovation Manager, at Orangetheory FitnessThere was no lack of care across the people that we talked to and an interest in helping their patients. What we found was there was a lack of tools and support for them to do that, a lack of understanding of how to do it, and the goal would be to help support them there and create quite a frictionless process for them to just integrate it, because there's no lack of a desire to do it, which is really, really helpful to bring this movement to life.Devin LebrunWith your work and with the resources you've helped us create, we're able to then help educate those providers who are already in our studios of hey, like, if you love this and you're helping treat someone and you think this might be a good solution for them, too, or you have other healthcare provider friends that are looking for that movement solution that they love, like we would love to be something that they consider for that.MV ShookOrangetheory Fitness Innovation Team roleScience-backed and coach-led workoutInteresting and innovative initiativesReaching a broader demographic with Healthcare AdvantageHealthcare Advantage program connecting the clinic and communityRaising awareness among healthcare providersSubsidized exercise program impactConnecting the health & fitness industry to healthcareReducing healthcare costsSupporting progress reports back to the healthcare providerBringing the exercise as medicine movement to lifeBeing part of the healthcare continuumhttps://www.movetolivemore.com/https://www.movetolivemore.com/bookhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/move-to-live-more@MovetoLiveMore

Even if you're not trying to jacked or huge, you still want to optimize your valuable time spent training. The three main factors you have under your control are: 1: Training Frequency - How often you hit each muscle group. 2: Training Volume - How many sets and reps you do each week 3: Training Intensity - How hard you push, and how close to failure each set is Because of these three factors, group classes like CrossFit, Orange Theory, F45, HIIT, and Bootcamps often miss the mark with their more random nature. In this episode we'll explain frequency, volume, and intensity, along with what the research says. On today's episode I talk about an event that has been a long time coming, an Ironman 70.3 event in Waco, TX. Commonly called "The Middle Distance" a 70.3 is the total distance among a 1.2mi swim, 56mi bike, and a 13.1mi run. I completed the event in 5:33:39 and was 25th in my age group. There is now no turning back from just seeing how far I can go in an arena I never thought I'd ever be in. Which is why I'm doubling down. In the episode I talk about my training, where anything not on the bike or in a pool would go down right at OrangeTheory.
