Justin interviews Fonzo Martinez, boys basketball head coach at McKinney Christian Academy in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, about his path from high school and college basketball—derailed by severe knee injuries—to working as a train engineer and in corporate sales before feeling called to coach. He details getting his start at Coram Deo Academy, rebuilding a losing program into a playoff and state tournament team, then moving to McKinney Christian, where he became head coach four years ago and has led a dominant run including TAPPS state titles in 2022 and 2026 (39–1 this year; 77–3 over two years). Martinez explains Texas scheduling and associations (UIL, TAPPS, SPC), emphasizes adjusting style to personnel, and shares culture-building practices like weekly leadership days, player speeches, peer feedback sessions, bench standards, and boundaries that prioritize family and healthy time commitments.00:00 Meet Coach Fonzo00:44 Playing Days and Knee Injury01:56 Railroad to Coaching Leap05:58 First Head Job at Coram Deo06:52 COVID and Move to McKinney09:04 State Title Run and Scheduling11:29 Texas Leagues Explained13:25 What New Coaches Miss17:32 Adapting Style to Personnel26:11 Offseason Rules and Multi Sport34:10 Culture Staples and Leadership Day35:44 Culture Over Winning36:33 Inside Leadership Day38:36 Weekly Player Speeches39:51 Practice Time Breakdown41:41 Attitude And 95 Percent Rule45:25 Role Clarity Exercises46:38 Peer Feedback Meeting49:21 Bench Energy Standards51:03 Stealing From Other Sports52:17 Player Led Timeouts58:47 Pregame Warmup Upgrades01:02:08 Changing Mind On Time01:05:55 Closing Thoughts

What happens when you're ready to quit the sport you once loved? And what if the answer isn't more training, but more community? Juan Pablo, known as "the People's Principal" in Plainfield, New Jersey, brings raw honesty to this conversation. He talks about the letter his family sent confronting him about buying bikes with rent money. He shares how cycling became his medicine after serving in the Navy and dealing with PTSD. And he explains the difference between a superhero and a villain in a way that will stop you in your tracks. This episode covers the cost of triathlon, the balance between sport and family, why most endurance athletes are processing trauma, and what it means to train so others don't have to suffer the way you did. Juan Pablo completed sprint triathlons, XTERRA races, and two half Ironmans before injuries and financial realities brought him back to cycling full time. Now he races criteriums, hosts a Memorial Day weekend race around his school, and works with Coach David Lipscomb's CIS Collective to rebuild his foundation from the ground up. Whether you're a beginner wondering if you can afford this sport or a veteran athlete struggling to find balance, this conversation will meet you where you are. Miami doesn't have a running culture by accident. Frankie Ruiz built it.From 17 Florida high school cross country state championships (9 in a row); to a junior who just finished 4th at Nike Cross Nationals; to a marathon that generates $300 million a year for Miami-Dade County; and a government appointment to make an entire city healthier—he does all of this simultaneously. And he's been doing it for over two decades.Frankie is the co-founder of the Life Time Miami Marathon and serves as Chief Running Officer at Life Time, overseeing one of the largest endurance event platforms in the country. He's the City of Miami's Chief Wellness Officer, where he'sreframing parks and public trails not as amenities, but as preventative healthcare infrastructure. And every week, he runs with hundreds of people at the Baptist Health Brickell Run Club, which he founded in 2009 and which has grown into one of the largest free weekly run clubs in the world. On the coaching side, his Belen Jesuit cross country program just broke its own Florida record with a 17th state title. The conversation turns to how Martin prepares for meets, how he helps teammates and even rival jumpers during meets, his inner confidence and strong self-belief, how he started high jumping in the first place and, ultimately, how high he might fly during this upcoming outdoor season. What are his goals? How much higher can he raise the bar? Prior to that discussion, FNP sports report Alexander Dacy joins Greg to discuss the high school basketball regional finals and what's ahead for Frederick County teams in the state quarterfinals, as well as Hood College's impressive run to hosting at least one game in the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament this weekend and a banner night for Frederick County ice hockey.

After claiming the Class 3A boys indoor track and field team championship with just eight athletes, two of them, senior Ricky Johnson and junior Jake Brown, and the coach of the Lancers, Bill Eckard, are this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. The trio chats with host Greg Swatek about how the Linganore boys were able to pull off such an improbable championship with such a small team. The Lancers didn't win a single event and scored only 31 points, and yet it was still good enough for a one-point win over second-place Oakdale and their first state team indoor championship since 2019. What did the team expect going into the state indoor meet? When did the athletes start thinking that winning the team championship possible? Why is it such a close-knit team? And how does this result propel the Lancers into the outdoor season this spring? All of these questions are answered over the course of the discussion, which also revealed some questionable dietary choices after practices and meets. Prior to this discussion, FNP sports reporter Alexander Dacy joins Greg to share thoughts on the epic men's hockey final at the Olympics and preview the upcoming high school basketball playoffs. They also touch on Mount St. Mary's opening its first season of girls flag football this weekend and Hood College's run to the NCAA Division III Tournament in men's basketball.
Andrew Gray's triathlon journey is proof that progress does not have to take decades. In just four years, he went from finishing 18th in his first sprint triathlon, navigating rough transitions and limited gear, to becoming a New Jersey state champion in both sprint and Olympic distance racing. A 2025 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Andrew now balances elite-level training with a demanding career on Wall Street. His days begin at 4 a.m. with focused workouts, continue through a 10-hour workday, and end with another intentional training session. Instead of chasing endless volume, he trains with precision, showing what is possible when discipline meets belief. In this episode of Tri Beginner's Luck, Andrew shares why he is choosing to dominate as an elite age grouper rather than pursue a pro card, how the Roka Standard Racing team pushes him to grow, and what a tough race at Ironman 70.3 Florida taught him about resilience. He also reflects on access, representation in triathlon, and the financial realities that shape who gets to stay in endurance sports long term. Whether you are training for your first sprint triathlon or eyeing USA Triathlon Age Group Nationals, this conversation is a reminder that you do not need perfect circumstances to improve. You need clarity, commitment, and the courage to believe you belong at the front of your own race. Let's tri this ! Remember to leave a review, share it with your friends, and follow Tri Beginner's luck on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. In 2025, Hermiston High's Leroy Lozano Mejia quietly became someone the Washington distance scene could no longer ignore. The sophomore entered the fall as a sleeper and left it with authority. Built on patience and aerobic strength, he doesn't chase attention. He shows up, does the work, and lets races speak for him. After running 15:36 and finishing 11th at the 3A state meet as a freshman, Leroy took a clear step forward in his sophomore cross-country season. He won the Battle of the 509 Invitational in Spokane against a strong field. He followed that with a fourth-place finish at Nike Hole in the Wall, running 14:55 on one of the most honest courses in the country. By November, the progression was undeniable. At the Washington 3A State Championships, he finished runner-up in 15:10. From 11th to second in one year. Built slowly. Earned daily. But the story isn't just about results. On the track, the contrast is still there. A 9:15 3200 shows real strength. A 4:23 mile leaves space to grow. And instead of running from that tension, Leroy leans into it.In this episode of The Sunday Shakeout, we talk about discipline as a daily choice, not a personality trait. About backing words with actions. And about the strange truth runners don't always admit — that pain, when chosen, can become addictive.Tap into the Leroy Lozano Mejia Special. https://teachhoops.com/ On the Championship-Defining Moment When asked if there was a single moment during the tournament run where he knew his team had what it took to win it all, Coach Ryan Bleiker points to a specific timeout late in the state championship game. "We were in a dogfight, and the other team had just hit a big three to cut our lead. The atmosphere in the Kohl Center was electric. I called a timeout, and as I walked over to the huddle, I was ready to deliver a fiery speech. But before I could say a word, I saw our senior point guard already talking to the other four guys, completely calm, telling them exactly what needed to be done on the next defensive possession. There was no panic, no fear—just pure focus and trust. In that instant, I knew. They didn't need me; they had each other. That's when you know your team is truly special."

https://teachhoops.com/ On the Secret to a Championship Season When asked what the single biggest factor was in his team's run to a state title, Coach Matthew Klein dismisses the idea of a secret formula. "Honestly, it came down to a concept we preached from day one: competitive trust. It's easy to trust each other when things are going well, but we built a culture where our players trusted each other most in the toughest moments. It meant our best shooter trusted the 10th man on the scout team to push him in practice every single day. It meant the point guard trusted that if he made the extra pass, his teammate would be ready to knock down the shot. We didn't win because we had the most raw talent; we won because we were the most connected team, and that trust was our armor during the tournament."
