She's got a Ph.D. and a strong voice online and in person, as she writes, preaches and shares the messages God has given her with people across the country. I knew I wanted to ask Sharon to endorse my book right away and was so thankful that she said "yes." Here's what she has to say about "Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church & the Church Needs Women:" "In our current culture, the Church is not known for its virtues. When stories of corruption and scandal seem to emerge every week, it's no wonder people are staying away. Thankfully, these stories of church failure are not the full picture. In pockets of faithfulness all over the world, God's people are showing up to be Jesus' hands and feet, and Ericka is telling this story. While the Church is not perfect, it is still a place of healing and calling, which is why I am so grateful to Ericka for beckoning women home." In this conversation, I talk to Paige about what it was like ascending to semi-fame on TV, her struggle with addictions, infertility and converting to Catholicism. Bonus fun: Krystal attended Harvard Business School and scaled the corporate ladder of a Fortune 200 publicly traded oil and gas company, where she became the youngest executive among a handful of women officers. When I first heard about Katy Faust's organization, Them Before Us, I was intrigued. Childrens' rights? Aren't those built in? You would think so, but it's not truly the case in modern society. Them Before Us is a global movement defending children's right to their mother and father. What does this mean though? It means that in all things -- from divorce to abortion to surrogacy to remarriage and more -- children deserve to be put first. As Katy deftly educates in her book, children who grow up in a family with married, biological parents fare the very best in all life circumstances. There are always outliers, but statistical majorities show this is true. In this episode we talk about: How no-fault divorce led to horrible outcomes for children How surrogacy & egg/sperm donation leave children with a primal trauma wound from birth How children are harmed when there is either no father or no mother in the home How the most dangerous person for a child is an unrelated family member living in the home (ie. mom's boyfriend) What it would mean to truly put children FIRST instead of leading with adult sympathy and desires above all. This is an important and fascinating conversation. I loved talking with Katy and share her heart for childrens' rights. My friend Leah grew up in what she calls a "cult," a super-fundamentalist church setting where women were routinely put down, disrespected and where she never heard that God loved her. To her, this is just what Christianity was. As she says, "When you're in a cult, they don't tell you you're in a cult." It wasn't until years later, in young adulthood, that Leah attended a "normal" Christian church and began to recognize what had happened to her growing up. Thankfully, she encountered a healthy church community walked alongside her, even helping pay for years of therapy to overcome her past. It's been a long journey, but Leah has been able to emerge from this painful church history and thrive inside a healthy church body for several years now. Rather than running away from God, she got curious and began exploring what it looked like to be a. Christian in a place that was not abusive and that did value her as a woman. I share Leah's story in my upcoming book, "Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church and the Church Needs Women." This is the first peek inside a few podcast episodes that will be dedicated to telling powerful stories of the church in the lives of women. We talk about her amazing ministry, Joni and Friends, which provides wheelchairs & ministry to people who are disabled across the world. She reveals how she stays joyful in chronic pain and what heaven really means to her. It was truly an honor to chat with this amazing woman of God. I learned so much about how to handle suffering, even the little bit I have in my own life. I encourage to take the 25 minutes of this episode and listen closely. Hannah Keeley is known as America's #1 Mom Coach (don't we all need one of those?!) She has created Mom Mastery University with all kinds of classes and resources for moms and she trains Christian life coaches around the world. Oh -- did I mention she's a mom of 7 children? Yup -- she's got ALL the experience. That experience is hard-won, however. After getting overwhelmed in early motherhood, she knew something had to change. She prayed and asked God to help her dig out of the pit. With "bull-headed determination," she began to create a better life and a better motherhood. Dr. Christina Francis is the Chairman of the Board of the American Association of Pro-Life OB-GYNs. I spoke with her for a story, but her answers were so incredible that I just had to deliver this interview as a podcast episode as well. In this episode, Dr. Francis answers questions about her reaction to Roe v. Wade possibly being overturned, and speaks to some of the myths that have been circulating since the news came out. We speak about: ' Could ectopic pregnancies and miscarriage somehow be criminalized? How is medical treatment different than abortion? The dangers of the abortion pill and self-managed abortions at home (complications are 4x higher and she speaks to this.) The abortion pill reversal program (they've seen over 3,000 babies delivered to women who changed their minds after taking their first abortion pill) The truth behind 2nd & 3rd trimester abortions How often do fetal anomalies make it "necessary" to have an abortion? How does abortion harm women in ways beyond the actual procedure? This is not easy subject matter, but I hope it's clear from this conversation that those of us who are pro-life are genuine and compassionate about our care for both women and children. Dr. Francis does an incredible job clarifying some information that I think gets clouded in media circles. I hope you'll consider what she has to say! Her message is one of truth, good doctrine and deep understanding of God's beloved, His Church -- in the form of the local church and the universal Church around the world. Whether you are new to church or grew up going, you'll learn something from Erin in this episode. As someone who did grow up in church, I'm shocked by how much I never knew until recently! I first heard of Tsh years ago when she was working on her book about traveling around the world with her young family. I was fascinated and intrigued by her story and was so excited to have the opportunity to chat with Tsh about her new book, "Bitter and Sweet: A Journey Into Easter." Lent starts very soon (depending on when you listen to this!) so grab this book now. Also, even if you are listening off-season, grab it for the next Lent -- happens every year ;) She also has a great book on Advent if you are looking for other resources. I love what Tsh writes on her website: "I believe we become more human — more who we're made to be — when we live sacramentally. Which is to say, when we see things how they really are, thanks to the good wisdom and creativity of our Maker." This episode is super short because I had a ton audio mishaps and then lost a big part of the interview. But, short and sweet never hurt anyone and wanted to make sure you heard about Tsh's important message for this book. If you are considering adding Lent to your annual ritual, I highly recommend it -- and a book companion with application resources to go along with it will make it all the more meaningful. Sheila Gregoire talks about sex and it's earned her some exclusion in the Christian world, but for all the wrong reasons. She's been writing and speaking on sex within Christian marriage for years, but her latest book, "The Great Sex Rescue" taps new ground -- and it's fascinating. She's done intensive, comprehensive surveys of men and women -- and her discoveries fuel what she covers in this book. Namely, Christians (and culture generally) have often put women in the terrible position of "obligation sex" or doing things they aren't comfortable with because they think they "owe" it to their husbands. That's just one of the things we cover, but an important one. That is NOT a healthy view of sex and no woman should feel this way. >>> More episodes here Sheila is bold and unafraid to tackle popular Christian marriage books and authors. In fact, she often excerpts some of the worst lines and exposes just how toxic, abusive and insane some of them are. She's authentic, fun and standing up for healthy relationships in a way that's refreshing and essential If you can't tell, I absolutely loved speaking with her and highly recommend her work! If you are struggling with sex in your marriage, I also want to mention the work of Janna Denton-Howes, a woman I have worked with and found to be an incredible, empowering resource. Elisha and Angela are friends who grew up together in a very conservative fundamentalist church environment. Hell and damnation were the regular vibe and spiritual abuse ran rampant. The guilt and misguided ways in which their pastors and spiritual leaders taught them made Christianity confusing -- and not at all the true way of Jesus. As they got older, both of then eventually found their way to new avenues of the Christian faith. Over time, they each saw how screwed up their fundamentalist backgrounds really were. Today, they've been able to make peace with God but the religious trauma from the past is still there, beneath the surface. In this conversation, I speak with them both about what they went through, how they reconciled it and where they are today with their faith. As we begin to talk more openly about spiritual abuse and deep church hurt in society, I think some will resonate with their experience.
