The war in Ukraine is 14 months old and 250,000 people have been killed. It's time for peace, so I pray to that end. I also work through why the Whitehouse wants to shut down natural gas. Then, as an act of humility, I confess three errors of prediction I made two years ago; you gotta own when you are wrong! Across the last half of the show I discuss the recent Asbury revival and frame it in light of America's history of revivals. Our national imagination has been deeply shaped by huge revivals! Then I both affirm and critique revivals.
Not the End of the Filibuster - but it feels like that sometimes by Gavin Viano
As Republican lawmakers adapt to their ‘super-minority’ in the House, they’re grappling with a big question: is it better to negotiate when they can, or dig in on delays?
Today - Colorado Sun political reporters Elliott Wenzler and Jesse Paul discussed the long — and very tense — weekend of work in the Colorado House where Democrats invoked a little-used rule to stop a Republican filibuster of three gun control bills. The GOP was outraged by the move, setting up more partisan clashes in the second half of the 120-day lawmaking term.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's Tuesday, and we're digging into all the local stories that matter this week. First up, the beloved Japanese restaurant Domo is reopening! But will TikTok ruin it again? Then, host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi check in on the state legislature, where debates are heating up around Governor Jared Polis's big housing proposal and guns in the wake of the East High School shootings. And finally, can anyone trust the developers promising big things for the Park Hill Golf Course? Their plan for parkland, housing, and commercial development is on our April 4 ballots, and we got tons of feedback from listeners who've worked with Westside Investment Partners. Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh ended her filibuster protesting a ban on medical treatments for transgender youth, while one dealing with transgender athletes will remain in committee.
On Monday, Missouri lawmakers return from their Spring Break. For Missouri's Republicans, the agenda they're returning to is squarely focused on restricting the rights of transgender people. Among the bills being debated are those that would prohibit trans girls from playing girls sports and ban gender-affirming health care for minors. Jason Rosenbaum, St. Louis Public Radio political correspondent analyzes the GOP focus on trans issues, and previews what could happen when lawmakers convene next week.
Republican-led states all over the country are passing bill restricting transgender rights, particularly the ability for minors to access health care procedures like puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and gender reassignment surgeries. But Missouri may actually pass a less restrictive version of that idea, thanks to the fact that the Missouri Senate has a tradition of a strong filibuster. St. Louis Public Radio's Jason Rosenbaum talks with Democratic Sen. Greg Razer of Kansas City about how the filibuster can reshape the debate over bills affecting transgender people.
Speaker John Arch said he won't avoid scheduling bills just because opponents are filibustering to stop them.

On today's show, we're looking at how Liberals in a House committee investigating alleged Chinese election interference used a filibuster tactic to avoid having Prime Minister Trudeau's chief of staff testify. Plus, we brought our billboard truck calling on Trudeau to fire the MP who apparently received backing from the Chinese Communist Party to a protest outside his constituency office. And finally, today is International Women's Day. We'll take a look at the new face of a tampon brand — a biological male.
Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast
This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode with special guest star Patton Oswalt! The City of Pawnee annually celebrates the great Pawnee tea dump of 1817, but due to how the old-timey script looks, "tea" looks like "ted", so each year the city dumps a man named "Ted" into Ramsett Lake. This year, the "Ted" thrown into the lake becomes very angry, and demands Leslie address the many, many outdated laws still active in Pawnee. To this end, at the next City Council Meeting, Leslie proposes the city purge many of its old and obscure laws. However, citizen Garth Blunden is overtly against changing the laws due to historical significance, and successfully filibusters the meeting to prevent further action. Leslie implores Garth to reconsider. Garth accuses Leslie of having no respect for tradition. Finally, they decide to settle things with a wager: whoever can survive the longest living primitively at the Pawnee Historical House gets to make the other back down from their agenda. Meanwhile, now that April has been promoted to Deputy Director of Animal Control, Chris requires her to complete the Chris Traeger Management Training Seminar, or "ka-tumps". April asks Ron to help get her out of the seminar, but when Chris learns Ron has ALSO never had any management training, it backfires, with Ron getting roped in as well. As one might expect, things do not go well: Chris is overtly cheery, Ron is stoic and grumpy, April is sarcastic and snarky. Ron and Chris completely disagree on the best motivational methods, so Chris challenges Ron to see whose method works best: encouragement/appreciation/smiles (Chris), or money/fear/hunger (Ron). Finally, Ann's custom holiday with Leslie, "Breakfast Day", is coming up, and she found a waffle maker from JJ's Diner on an online auction. Unfortunately, somebody is bidding against her ... and she discovers that someone is Ben, who is shopping for a present for HIS custom holiday with Leslie, "Waffle Day". The two of them battle it out, trying to win the waffle maker, but ultimately lose to the owner of the Pawnee Pawn Shop, who they then have to deal with. While all this is happening, both Ann and Ben come to the realization that they are EXHAUSTED trying to keep up with the thoughtful but never-ending custom holidays Leslie has come up with for both of them. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Who will win their competition, Leslie or Garth? Will Ron or Chris win the competition, and what side will April be on? Who will win the coveted JJ's waffle maker? Is Garth cheating, or is he just really good at old-timey gibberish? Can Ron and Chris find a suitable mindless worker drone for their test subject? Can Ann and Ben continue dealing with all these custom holidays? Can Leslie get all the chickens out from under her dress? Will April and Ron be able to keep their conductor hats from the seminar? Loyal podcast viewers, this is competition cranked up to 11, just like in Spinal Tap! Many thanks to our wonderful sponsor, "Ron's One Minute Seminars", or ROMS.

In recent years, a lot of people have been saying good riddance to an important political tool: the filibuster. But a new report from the Orrin G Hatch Foundation has found that the filibuster is critical if we want to maintain bipartisanship, compromise, and more. Martin Gold is a visiting scholar at the Foundation. He authored the report and joins Boyd to discuss why we should defend the filibuster. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There was a report on a corporate media news outlet today that disturbed me. They were saying that many Republicans are not too concerned about the Georgia runoff election for U.S. Senate since Democrats had already won control. What difference does one vote make, they asked. This was disinformation. They know the stakes are very high for this runoff and they want Republicans to be unconcerned about it in hopes that they could shave off some of the votes on behalf of Democrats. But just in case there really are some Republicans out there who are yawning over the race between Herschel Walker and Raphael Warnock, let me say one name and one other word: "Joe Manchin" and "Filibuster."The only reason Chuck Schumer and Joe Biden couldn't get some of their legislation passed the last two years is because Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia opposes removing the filibuster. Some may point out that Senator Kyrsten Sinema from Arizona is another roadblock for Democrats, but I would argue that solidarity with Manchin is the only reason she's able to stave off attacks. If she was the lone vote against changing Senate rules, I believe she would have caved. If Warnock wins, that would give Democrats a 51-49 advantage. At some point, likely over gun control or a version of the Green New Deal, Schumer will make a new push to eliminate the filibuster. Even if Manchin votes against it but Sinema votes for it, that would be a tie broken by Kamala Harris. The filibuster would fall. Some would argue that Congressman Kevin McCarthy being Speaker of the House would remove the risk of Democrat legislation passing. I could make the "never trust a RINO" argument, but I'd also point out that with the GOP's razor-thin majority in the House, all Democrats would have to do is convert a small handful of Republicans to their side in order to get gun control, Green New Deal, or other destructive pieces of legislation passed. On today's episode of The JD Rucker Show, I dove into why I believe this is the case. I also had on Guy Mitchell, author of Global Warming: The Great Deception, to discuss the climate change agenda and how a Walker victory in Georgia is absolutely essential. The "red tsunami" failed because of voter fraud. They're going to try to do it again in Georgia. It is imperative that Walker wins by a landslide in order to overcome the theft of his victory.

Former Tennessee Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker join Governors Bredesen and Haslam to discuss the filibuster for a special episode, recorded live at the Baker Center in Knoxville in September 2022. Use of the filibuster, a rule that prevents key nominations and legislation from advancing without the support of 60 senators, is a long-standing practice of the United States Senate and Senators Corker and Alexander discuss how the filibuster works in practice, what they would change, and why it matters.
Republican and Democratic officials differ on whether the GOP will have a "filibuster proof" legislative majority next year.
