I'm in love with the idea of singing businessmen—guys like the Williston grocer, F. J. Davis, who, when he managed to stay on the right side of the law, sang the virtues of his fresh fruit and seafood across the counter; or the Great Falls haberdasher Mike Mullin, owner of the Mikehasit men's clothing store, who wrote a great ballad advising his customers, while “Waiting for a Chinook,” to stock up on warm winter wear from his store.
Interview of Mike Mullin of Kutak Rock, mediator and past Omaha Bar Association President. The interview was recorded in June 2022. Interview conducted by OBA Executive Director Dave Sommers.

This week, I sit down with my friend Mike Mullin. Mike is a graduate from Rutgers University with a degree in engineering. He is now in charge of running tests and diagnostics on NY's power grid, so don't mess with him! Mike how a great outlook on life and likes to take a go-with-the-flow mindset with things like picking a major, finding a career, and just living life in general. He's never been one to put too much pressure on himself to choose the correct area of study or field for work because he believes life has plans for each of us that no one can foresee. Ever since his fencing days in high school up to this point in his life, he bases his decisions on what he believes will make him happiest and he plans on doing that for the rest of his life. In addition to engineering, Mike loves all things computers. He loves picking out parts and putting them all together to make a well oiled PC. He's also been getting into options trading in the past year while also trying a few other hobbies when he feels compelled to do so. Mike is one rad dude with an interesting story that will only get better from here. We hope you enjoy this week's episode! If you did, let me know and be sure to share it with your friends and family. I'd really appreciate it! Episode 14: Revisions in Writing, Engineering, and Life with Craig DeAmbrose and Mike Mullin On this episode, Gillian and Kristin explore the similarities between creative and technical processes with bicycle engineer Craig DeAmbrose and author Mike Mullin. Mullin’s newest book Surface Tension tells the story of a teen cyclist who suffers a traumatic brain injury after witnessing a terrorist attack. No one believes his memories of the events except the terrorists who are trying to silence him for good. This fast-paced story was the perfect backdrop for us to explore how people construct everything from stories to simple machines to their own careers. STEM Read was so excited about Surface Tension that we worked with Tanglewood Press to create the free Educator’s Activity Guide . Northern Illinois University’s STEM Read is part of the NIU STEAM family of programs that explore science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. Author Darby Karchut and I discuss her new middle grade novel, Del Toro Moon, as well as her advice for writers and thoughts and writing and publishing in general. We also chat a bit about our mutual love for author Mike Mullin. Late in the show, there are some slight technical issues with the video, but the audio is continuous and this was an amazing conversation I really enjoyed. Darby Karchut is a multi-award winning author, dreamer, and compulsive dawn greeter. A proud native of New Mexico, she now lives in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, where she runs in blizzards and bikes in lightning storms. When not dodging death by Colorado, Darby is busy at her writing desk. Her books include the best selling middle grade series: THE ADVENTURES OF FINN MacCULLEN. Best thing ever: her YA debut novel, GRIFFIN RISING, has been optioned for film. Her latest book is DEL TORO MOON from Owl Hollow Press. Visit the author at www.darbykarchut.com
