Today's Headlines: Israel stirred up another front yesterday by striking Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar—right as they were meeting to discuss Trump's ceasefire plan. Qatar, not thrilled about the timing, has suspended its mediator role. The White House is insisting the bombing was Israel's call, not ours—though the optics are messy, given Qatar's status as a U.S. ally. Meanwhile, Chief Justice John Roberts temporarily let Trump freeze $4 million in foreign aid while the Court takes up the case, and the justices agreed to fast-track Trump's appeal to reinstate tariffs that lower courts already ruled illegal. In other Trump court news, a federal appeals court upheld the $83.3 million defamation payout he owes E. Jean Carroll, calling the damages “fair and reasonable.” On the economy, Labor Department revisions show 911,000 fewer jobs created in the past year than first reported—the biggest downward adjustment since 2002. The Census Bureau also found that inflation wiped out income gains for most Americans in 2024, except high earners, while the gender pay gap actually widened. And finally, South Carolina Republicans are moving toward one of the harshest abortion bans with no exceptions for rape, incest, or fatal fetal anomalies, women potentially facing murder charges and even the death penalty for terminating a pregnancy. The bill will serve as a model for other states. Join Jim and Greg for the Wednesday 3 Martini Lunch as they tackle a pivotal Senate race twist, Israel striking Hamas leaders in Qatar, Russia violating NATO airspace, and the brutal downward revision of U.S. job growth.First, after noting that the Democrats may end up with a fierce U.S. primary in Maine, Jim and Greg break down the Israeli bombing of Hamas targets in Doha, Qatar. Several of the highest ranking figures survived but it sends a clear message to Hamas. Of course, the usual domestic and international voices are condemning Israel's actions.Next, they react to at least 19 Russian drones entering Polish airspace. Three of them were shot down, possibly more. This is another example of Putin crossing boundaries to see what the response will be. Jim offers some advice to the U.S. government on a message that he wants to be very loud and very clear. Finally, they shudder as the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) revised job growth from April 2024-March 2025 downward by more than 900,000 jobs. The BLS revised the numbers down by more than 800,000 the year before that. Greg wonders whether the monthly jobs reports still provide much value if they are regularly way off base. Jim offers some practical and comical reasons for why the monthly reports need to stay. Please visit our great sponsors:Support your health with Dose Daily. Todd Rabold, Investment Management Partner, Callan Family Office, discusses another day of record high closes for the benchmark indexes; whether the sizeable downward job growth revisions should be concerning; the continuing positive trajectory of AI spend; and why US, international and small cap stocks are good bets for investors in the current market environment. Andrew Walworth, Tom Bevan and Carl Cannon discuss todays' revisions to employment data by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the reaction to the release of videotape of a horrific attack of a woman riding a bus in Charlotte, N.C. by an assailant who had been arrested 14 times and was released pending trial on cashless bail. They also talk about the release by House Democrats of the birthday card for Jeffrey Epstein allegedly written and signed by Donald Trump, as well as other subpoenaed documents from the Epstein estate. And they discuss the feud between Vice President JD Vance and Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) over the U.S. missile attack on a Venezuelan boat that killed 11 alleged drug smugglers. Plus, they discuss “Operation Midway Blitz,” the Administration's immigration enforcement initiative launched in Chicago, and the reaction of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. Then finally, RCP Contributor Maggie Miller talks with RealClear Investigations writer John Murawski about the state of civics education in America's high schools and the Jack Miller Center, which is training teachers to teach civics using original documents.
Kevin Green is back on Morning Movers with investors awaiting an update on the latest labor market numbers. The BLS will release revisions to the latest non-farm payrolls print, which he says could be a catalyst for moving equities higher should the print come in better-than-expected. KG says investors are pricing in a September FOMC rate cut which could help explain the risk-on tone remaining instead of "climbing a wall of worry." Later, he previews Apple's (AAPL) "Awe Dropping" event and the significance of the company's latest iPhone model being released.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. On today's podcast: 1) President Trump started his immigration crackdown in Chicago, with federal agents stepping up enforcement in an escalating campaign against Democratic-run cities. The Department of Homeland Security said Operation Midway Blitz targets “criminal illegal aliens” and blamed Illinois Governor JB Pritzker for sanctuary policies that it said help shield lawbreakers.2) House Democrats released an alleged birthday note that they said Donald Trump sent to Jeffrey Epstein, raising pressure on the president over questions about his past interactions with the late disgraced financier. The release stems from a trove of documents received by the House Oversight Committee, including a birthday book compiled for Epstein’s 50th birthday and his last will and testament.3) Investors in the Treasuries market face a test of bullish sentiment this week from inflation reports and a benchmark revisions for jobs data. The market's ability to extend this month's rally will depend on the tone of producer and consumer inflation due Wednesday and Thursday.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The three major averages on Wall St rose to record territory on Tuesday as investors looked past current concerns over the US economic stability and bought into market opportunities. The Dow Jones rose added 0.43%, the S&P500 climbed 0.27% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq ended the day up 0.37%. Revisions to payrolls data of late has been the key catalyst spooking investors with the latest revision by the labour department coming in at a reduction of 911,000 for the 12-months to March this year signalling weakness in the US labour stability. In Europe overnight, markets closed mostly higher with the STOXX600 rising 0.09%, while Germany's DAX fell 0.37%, the French CAC added 0.23% and, in the UK, the FTSE100 ended the day up 0.23%.Across the Asia region on Tuesday, markets closed mixed with Japan's Nikkei falling 0.42% while South Korea's Kospi index gained 1.26%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.19% and China's CSI index fell 0.7%.The local market sell-off to start September has extended into the new trading week with the key index ending Tuesday's session down 0.52% as investor sentiment has been hit lately by further tariff, US economic and rate outlook uncertainty.Westpac consumer confidence data for September and NAB business confidence data for August were also both released yesterday with declines in both readings more than economists were expecting amid uncertainty on an economic level.Energy stocks continued their slide this week following OPEC+'s weekend decision to increase production of oil starting in October.Telix Pharmaceuticals (ASX:TLX) gained over 2% after reaching a deal with the US Food and Drug Administration to file a revised application for its brain cancer imaging agent, incorporating further clinical data. What to watch today:On the commodities front this morning oil is trading 0.71% higher at US$62.71/barrel, gold is up 0.12% at US$3640/ounce and iron ore is up 0.42% at US$104.93/tonne.The Aussie dollar has weakened against the greenback to buy 65.84 US cents, 97.06 Japanese Yen, 48.62 British Pence and 1 New Zealand dollar and 11 cents.Ahead of the midweek trading session the SPI futures are anticipating the ASX will open the day down 0.05%. Trading Ideas:Bell Potter has increased the 12-month price target on Lynas Rare Earths (ASX:LYC) from $7.65 to $9.35 and maintain a sell rating on the leading rare earths producer following the company highlighting its ‘Towards 2030 strategy'. The analyst sees LYC is priced for perfection, with little room for error, highlighting FY25 had higher depreciation which drove a miss on results, however, does recognise that the current themes pushing LYC higher are likely to persist as tailwinds over the short term. And Trading Central has identified a bearish signal on Breville Group (ASX:BRG) following the formation of a pattern over a period of 33-days which is roughly the same amount of time the share price may fall from the close of $30.89 to the range of $25 - $26.25 according to standard principles of technical analysis.

It's Casual Friday on the Majority Report On today's show: Revisions to the June and July job numbers show they were actually 21,000 less jobs added than initially reported. However, the ever optimist Howard Lutnick tells us to wait until a year from now when the job numbers will be amazing. Contributing writer to salon.com and proprietor of the Hullaballoo blog, Heather 'Digby' Parton joins us to wrap up the week's news. Could the US be working towards a regime change in Venezuela? Donald Trump is exacerbating the alienation of the US internationally. Trump posts an endless rant on the "Democrat Epstein Hoax" to Truth Social. Meanwhile, James O'Keefe posts hidden video footage of DOJ Deputy Chief Joseph Schnitt claiming that the DOJ will redact all GOP names in the Epstein files and only include Democrats. Will Democrats grow a spine and vote to shut down the government or cave in again like they did in March. In the Fun Half Joe Rogan falls for an AI video of Tim Walz dancing and then covers it tracks by saying "it seems like something he would do". We look into to Joe Rogan's love of an easily debunked moon landing theory, and it shows how much of an unreliable narrator he is. Pete Hegseth claims that the Trump administration had complete authority to "smoke a drug boat" All that and more. Have a good weekend, folks. The Congress switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. In the second part of my conversation with Lisa See, author of Lady Tan's Circle of Women, The Island of Sea Women, and more, we talked about the interior side of writing–things like dealing with your inner critic and dealing with the parts of writing and of life you would really rather not do, including:- The fascinating tidbit of information her research taught her about Los Angeles- How the Chinese public discourse about the smallpox epidemic that occurred 500 years ago is eerily similar to the controversy over Covid vaccines- The predictable emotional rollercoaster she rides each time during the revision process- Why writers should start celebrating good sentences the way Olympians celebrate an important point- The ninja trick of agreeing with your inner critic- A potential peril of becoming an internationally bestselling author- How the inevitable losses we experience with age can deepen your writing- The things she says no to now that she's the age that she is- Some of the beliefs and attitudes passed down through the Chinese side of her family she really had to work to cast off (and how her mother, who is not Chinese, helped)- Why reading fiction is her go-to personal development toolThis week's episodes are a replay. Hope you enjoy the last couple weeks of official summer and come back September 1 when I have a new guest–another author who specializes in historical fiction and telling women's stories that have been hidden or overlooked.Connect with Lisa on Instagram @lisasee_writer.For full show notes with links to everything we discuss, plus bonus photos!, visit katehanley.substack.com.Thank you for listening! And thanks to this week's sponsor, Air Doctor Pro. In this episode, labor market economist Guy Berger breaks down how jobs data is collected, why revisions happen, and how to interpret them in context. He explains the roles of NFP, claims, and JOLTS data, the impact of immigration shifts on labor supply, and how business surveys can signal future hiring trends. Berger also digs into why the current conditions show stability with potential for both cooling and tightening ahead. Economist Christian Briggs weighs in on the growing controversy over America's monthly jobs report after significant downward revisions shook confidence in the data. Drawing parallels to corporate reporting standards, Briggs argues that economic indicators must meet the same accuracy expectations as public companies, especially when Federal Reserve policy hangs in the balance. He discusses the case for moving to a bi-monthly release cycle, upgrading outdated government data systems, and applying modern analytics to better capture the fluid reality of employment trends. The takeaway: without trustworthy numbers, policymakers, businesses, and investors are flying blind.

You might already be familiar with filling out the FAFSA form, or you might only know it by reputation. That reputation is somewhere between filing your annual income taxes and running an Ironman triathalon. Revisions, technology issues and widespread confusion over the availability of the form over the past two years might make it seem even more sinister.Let's back up. What is the FAFSA? If you have a child finishing high school this school year, the FAFSA plays a big part in determining how much financial aid you could receive—including grants, loans and scholarships—to help pay for college. In Indiana, most families are now required by law to fill out the FAFSA unless they seek a waiver. Despite recent tumult, all signs point to the FAFSA being ready to fill out this year by the traditional launch date of Oct. 1. Our guest this week is Bill Wozniak, vice president and chief marketing officer of INvestEd, a nonprofit based in Indianapolis and created by the Indiana Legislature to help families navigate the FAFSA process. He provides an overview for the uninitiated and shares some of the biggest misconceptions of FAFSA. For example, if you think you are sufficiently wealthy to put any financial assistance out of reach, you very well could be wrong. If you think you just need to get it done by the end of the year, you might want to think again. And, Wozniak says, the process isn't nearly as arduous today as its reputation might suggest.

July was a challenging month for travel and tourism in South East Asia. A military conflict between Thailand and Cambodia shook the region. New 'reciprocal' US tariff rates will challenge bottom lines and business travel budgets for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, mixed results continue for visitor arrivals, consumer spending and travel sentiment. This month's Top 10 Travel Talking Points round-up takes Gary and Hannah from Malaysia to Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines and, inevitably given the global geo-economic situation, Washington DC. En route we discuss the potential implications of the Thailand-Cambodia War, the new US tariff rates and the Asian Development Bank's gloomy GDP forecasts for the region. Plus, we assess the latest visitor arrivals statistics - and Malaysia's controversial new accounting method - look at Singapore's tourism partnership with OpenAI, Hotel 101's lacklustre IPO in New York, and further delays for Thailand's casino resort legislation and tourism tax And, we finish on a positive note with the newly inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Sites across South East Asia.
Join Jim and Greg for the Friday edition of the 3 Martini Lunch as they react to President Trump's firm opposition to a Palestinian state, a deeply disappointing July jobs report, and more glaring incompetence from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and former Vice President Kamala Harris.First, they applaud Trump for refusing to follow France, Great Britain, and Canada in announcing their support for a Palestinian state. Trump says would be rewarding Hamas for its atrocities against Israel and beyond. Jim and Greg also explain why calls for establishing a Palestinian state with Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian Authority is a horrible idea.Next, they shake their heads at the July jobs report, which shows just 73,000 jobs added, a number far below expectations. Making matters worse, numbers from May and June were revised down by more than 250,000. Jim suggests tariffs may be hurting job creation, and both he and Greg warn against using tariff revenues to send us all checks. Finally, they roll their eyes as Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass says the withdrawal of more National Guard personnel means they are in "retreat." Bass also cluelessly says he wants all military out of LA. Jim and Greg remind you that Bass was on Joe Biden's short list for vice president in 2020. Ultimately, that not went to Kamala Harris, who proved again on national television Thursday night, that she has no business being anywhere near the Oval Office. Please visit our great sponsors:No missed calls, no missed customers with OpenPhone. On Friday, job growth figures from earlier months were revised sharply downward: May's gain was cut from 125,000 to just 19,000, and June's total from 147,000 to only 14,000. Today, we're told there were 73,000 more jobs in July, but might that number also get revised down? Also on the show: are President Trump's new tariffs legal? Jess Bravin listened as a federal appeals court panel heard the arguments on Thursday, and he joins us to discuss. Plus, Minneapolis bans discrimination based on body size.

Joe Mazzola says the market response to jobs data really told the story of the week despite updates on tariff policy and big tech earnings. Looking at the 3-month average of jobs data, Joe underlines that the U.S. economy hasn't seen figures this low since 2020 during the pandemic. He combines this week's labor data with PCE inflation metrics to posit the question: Do we have a slowing consumer?======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
Joe Brusuelas joins Nicole Petallides at the NYSE with a dampened economic picture for U.S. growth following July's jobs report. He says the downward revisions in June and May sent a "big chill" across the labor market. He doesn't believe a recession will occur, but says stagflationary conditions could arise. Discussing manufacturing jobs, he asks: "Where are we going to get these workers?" Joe calls the lack of demand for these roles a part of "affluenza" in the U.S. For the Fed, he says "they didn't make a mistake" by not cutting this week because they didn't have the latest labor market data.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
