Guelph City Council is now on summer break, a long break and then just a few more meetings before the municipal election campaign can really get underway. Perhaps you can't handle anymore council talk, maybe you just want to be free to think about getting an ice cream at the Boathouse, or plan to visit all your favourite vendors at Ribfest, but after this you will be free... The recap of May, June and July's council meetings! A lot of big stuff came down in the last few months. Remember the debate over the McQuillan's Bridge and whether the City should get a newer, cheaper bridge? Of course that wasn't the only debate involving trails, which was a recurring theme with a lot of planning discussions. And speaking of planning, there was also a big debate about eight hectates of the Niska lands, a debate that did not turn out the way people hoped. And on the topic of hopes, how is the City of Guelph doing with achieving the goals of the strategic plan? Let's find out as we recap the spring and summer events at council on this edition of the Guelph Politicast! There are two more council meetings before the election, and they're both in September. First the planning meeting will take place on Wednesday September 9 and that agenda will drop on the City of Guelph website on Thursday August 27. Stay on top of council coverage every week by following @adamadonaldson on Blue Sky and by subscribing to the Guelph Politico Tip Sheet newsletter. The Thursday edition is the recap of that week's council meeting. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Find more episodes of the Politicast here, or download them on your favourite podcast app at Apple, TuneIn and Spotify . Also, when you subscribe to the Guelph Politicast channel and you will also get an episode of Open Sources Guelph every Monday, and an episode of End Credits every Friday.

Join the free masterclass and learn the full 5-stage framework: https://www.amenkaur.com/masterclassEver feel like you're moving through molasses, giving maximum effort for minimal output? This episode unpacks the 8% Battery Rule, a simple way to understand why high-achievers hit sudden walls of exhaustion, and the exact signals your nervous system sends before, during, and after a shutdown. In this episode: Why cortisol isn't the villain it's made out to be, and what its natural daily rhythm should look like. How a "flat" stress curve is actually a sign of chronic overload, not calm. Why your recovery speed after a hard day is a better resilience signal than how you feel in the moment. The hidden cost of suppressing grief, anger, and shame while you're "too busy" to feel them. A simple weekly practice for identifying what's quietly draining your energy.Who this is for: high-achievers, entrepreneurs, and high-functioning professionals who keep pushing through exhaustion and want the biological reason their body keeps shutting down, plus a practical way to reverse it.Frequently asked questions: What is the 8% Battery Rule? It describes the tipping point where the nervous system shifts from functioning under pressure into a protective shutdown, often mistaken for laziness or burnout. Why do high-achievers experience sudden shutdowns? They tend to override early stress signals to keep performing, which pushes the body into functional freeze instead of allowing normal recovery. How do I know if my nervous system is recovering? Faster bounce-back time after a hard day is one of the clearest signs your range and resilience are returning. The science behind this episodeThis episode is science-led. Here are the studies behind each claim, in the order they come up.On the cortisol curve flattening under chronic stress: Adam, E. K., Quinn, M. E., Tavernier, R., McQuillan, M. T., Dahlke, K. A., & Gilbert, K. E. (2017). Diurnal cortisol slopes and mental and physical health outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Psychoneuroendocrinology, 83, 25–41. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.psyneuen.2017.05.018On stress shifting the brain from its slower regulating systems to faster threat-driven ones: Arnsten, A. F. T. (2009). Stress signalling pathways that impair prefrontal cortex structure and function. Nature Reviews Neuroscience, 10(6), 410–422. https://doi.org/10.1038/nrn2648On why the stress response keeps running as long as you keep thinking about the stressor (the "open tabs"): Brosschot, J. F., Gerin, W., & Thayer, J. F. (2006). The perseverative cognition hypothesis: A review of worry, prolonged stress-related physiological activation, and health. Journal of Psychosomatic Research, 60(2), 113–124. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jpsychores.2005.06.074On allostatic load — the cumulative cost carried across the body's systems: McEwen, B. S. (1998). Protective and damaging effects of stress mediators. New England Journal of Medicine, 338(3), 171–179. https://doi.org/10.1056/NEJM199801153380307A note on the science: These findings describe patterns across large groups of people, not a diagnosis of any individual. The associations are real and consistent, but they're modest in size — which is exactly why nothing in this episode can tell you what's happening in your own body. If you're worried about your symptoms, please see your doctor. Keywords: functional freeze, nervous system shutdown, high functioning anxiety, burnout recovery, why am i so tired, chronic stress, nervous system regulation, cortisol, emotional exhaustion, high achieving women, cant start things, task paralysis, freeze response, allostatic load, HRV, rest and recovery, overwhelm, stress and the body

Debbie Gilbert discovers you CAN Get Help With the Menopause with Dr Shilpa McQuillan, founder and clinical lead of the Berkshire Menopause Clinic. In our latest episode, this leading specialist discusses all things menopause. In addition she explains how she set up her own business whilst juggling the demands of a family, and the impact of winning two awards at the 2025 Best Business Women Awards, including the highly contested Best Customer Service category. Shilpa's story is a remarkable one. A dual trained gynaecologist and GP, she built her own clinic from scratch with no business background whatsoever. She even built her own website, while waking at 4:30am with a one year old. Three and a half years in, she is fully booked and has over 125 five star reviews. There are fascinating discussions about what genuinely good menopause care looks like, why so many women are still not getting the support they need, and how to navigate an increasingly noisy space full of conflicting advice. Shilpa also shares why she built her business around trust rather than paid advertising, and why following your values is the single best business decision you can make. Honest, warm and genuinely useful whether you are navigating menopause or building a business from scratch. Maureen McQuillan creates process-focused, system-based paintings from multiple layers of ink and acrylic polymers that convey a deep but elusive sense of space. Vibrantly hued, she uses rippling, wave-like linear elements and undulating rounded forms to suggest shapes in nature as well as the human body. Her systematic approach to color results in a luminous and complex optical mix reflecting her interest in how our perceptions of color have changed as technology has advanced. Born and raised in New York City, Maureen McQuillan is a graduate of Columbia University and the New York Studio School. Since the early 1990s she has been exhibiting her work in solo and group shows in galleries and museums throughout the United States as well as in France, the UK, Costa Rica, and Hong Kong. The TV sitcom The Golden Girls went off the air 32 years ago, but thanks to reruns, Dorothy Zbornak and her gal pals live on in the hearts of many, especially queer folks who delight in the comedic hijinks of four senior women living together in Miami.Although he was a toddler when the Golden Girls was first broadcast, voice over and musical theater actor Luke McQuillan's viral covers in the voice of Bea Arthur is helping to keep the show's legacy alive and it got him cast on Cartoon Network and Netflix shows. Is Luke so good at challenging Bea Arthur that he runs the risk of being overshadowed by the Broadway legend? Today Luke McQuilan joins us to celebrate the life and career of our favorite WWII Marine sergeant Bea Arthur, from her gigs in gay bars here in Chicago, to singing about drugs with Rock Hudson on her CBS TV special, from her quirky TV appearances like the Star Wars Holiday Special to her unforgettable portrayals as Maude and Dororthy on The Golden Girls.FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM:★ instagram.com/luke.mcquillan★ instagram.com/faustofernos★ instagram.com/marcfelion

“I never thought that the teachers would gossip more than the teenage students” Meet Mike McQuillan: Mike McQuillan moved from New York, USA to Lima, Peru to teach English as a foreign language. Mike describes the last institute where he taught as a golden palace built on top of a toxic swamp. The systems worked, and the people were great, but the undercurrent of academic elitism and water cooler gossip undermined the teaching experience. He resigned in protest and now works full-time as a freelance public speaking coach. We discuss: When Mike noticed that gossip is such an issue in the education sector Why is the educator sector the worst in terms of gossip? Do you think there are enough expectations to guide teacher's behaviour? What can schools do about it? Has Mike ever worked in an environment that has been gossip-free? What should leaders do if they have people constantly coming to gossip about their teammates to the leader? The difference between ratting someone out and reporting misconduct. It's a high-stakes football game as the Wilton Beavers take on the Durant Wildcats. The Beavers start strong with a jet sweep to Colby Goss, who nearly breaks a tackle before a fumble is ruled dead. Despite being backed up, the Beavers' defense, led by Parker Carpenter, stands tall and forces Durant to punt. As the game progresses, the Beavers showcase their offensive prowess. Owen Hassel makes a series of impressive runs, including a 30-yard gain and a near-touchdown. Eventually, Hassel finds the end zone, putting the Beavers up 6-0. The lights flicker, and the crowd goes wild as the Beavers' lead increases to 13-0. Durant fights back with a touchdown by Tate McKinley, narrowing the gap to 13-7. However, the Beavers respond with a series of electrifying plays, including a touchdown pass from Drew Keith to Serrata and another to Hayden Hill, extending their lead to 26-7 by halftime. Despite Durant's efforts, including a late interception by McQuillan that is called back due to pass interference, the Beavers maintain their momentum. As the first half concludes, Wilton leads 26-7 and will receive the ball to start the second half. Join us for an exciting second half as the Beavers aim to solidify their lead and the Wildcats fight to make a comeback!
To fully understand this current reading “crisis” (which really isn't a crisis at all), it must be seen in the context of similar “crises” occurring in the past (which weren't really crises either). This current “crisis” is not the first reading crisis to come along (Aydarova, 2024; Berliner & Biddle, 1995; McQuillan, 1998; Thomas, 2024), and it certainly won't be the last. And when this crisis runs its course, there will be a lull followed by another crisis, and then another, and then another. That's because there will always be those willing to create the illusion of crises for political and economic gain (Altwerger, 2008; Aydarove, 2023). And sadly, it's an effective tactic … for a time anyway.
