In 2023, Megan – a sassy robot, designed to be your daughter's best friend – danced and dismembered her way to internet infamy. The title character of director Gerard Johnstone and writer Akela Cooper's Blumhouse horror-comedy was an evil doll in the tradition of Chucky from Child's Play, but at the same time, distinct in her modernity. As I asked in my review for Empire Magazine at the time: “Has Chucky ever interrupted a stabbing spree to sing Sia's pop smash ‘Titanium'? Has Billy the Puppet ever broken into a TikTok-style dance before another Saw franchise victim met their violent demise?” The answer was no, and a moment in meme culture was born. There were SNL skits about Megan, starring Aubrey Plaza. The film took $181m at the box office against a paltry $12m budget. It seemed inevitable a sequel would follow – and two years later, that sequel is here.Written by Gerard, my guest today, from a story he conceived with Cooper, the film is bigger in every possible regard. It lays on the explosions and spectacle thicker and faster than before, throwing car chases and robot-on-robot fist fights into the mix this time around. It's higher in stakes: the fate of the world is on the line here, as a new rogue A.I threat, Amelia, emerges. And it's also more expansive in the conversation this Frankensteinian fable wants to have about parenthood, as well as the genie-out-of-the-bottle effect of artificial intelligence. But did you know in the first draft of this sequel, Joe Rogan and Snoop Dogg had brief parts written for them? Or that at one point in the script, Cady – played by Violet McGraw – has to fend off her sweet, old grandad in a fight scene in a diner, because he's being controlled by a neuro-chip? In episode four of our Visionary Remakes season, we cross-examine two versions of Cape Fear, the original starring a creepy and enigmatic Robert Mitchum, and the 1991 remake from Martin Scorsese starring a crazed and manic Robert De Niro.Special Guest: Amanda Jane Stern - writer, producer and star of the award-winning psychosexual thriller Perfectly Good Moment. Streaming now on Tubi! Co-host of the podcast Don't Be Crazy.Both versions of Cape Fear are anchored by dazzling performances of the antagonist, Max Cady. Robert Mitchum reduces the overtly violent nature of Cady in order to play up his cleverness, obsessiveness , and wiliness. De Niro goes over the top in his version of Cady, playing him as zany, an almost comical but brutal cartoon villain. This difference underlines the drastically opposed tones, vibes, and outcomes of each version of Cape Fear. The 1962 original focused on the limits of justice. It clearly asks and attempts to answer where the line between enforced law and moral justice lives, albeit wrapped in a juicy and sensational B-movie plot. Scorsese's 1991 remake does not ask those questions, but it does drench us in pulpy genre stimuli: graphic violence, improprietous sexuality, and domestic disputes. The debate we have in this episode is whether either film is successful in its intended mission. Is the original too flat for a genre flick and perhaps too lofty to escape pretension? Do Marty and De Niro swing away and strike out, can a trashy thriller be too much even if it attempts to do nothing more than shock?

Fresh Hope for Menendez Brothers as DA Reviews Case The Los Angeles County District Attorney, Nathan Hochman, met with relatives of Erik and Lyle Menendez as part of an ongoing review of their high-profile case. While no decision has been made, the family and advocates for the brothers are hopeful for progress toward their release. “When I came into office, I committed to reviewing all the facts of this case,” Hochman said. He explained that the review includes thousands of pages of prison records, trial transcripts, and other legal documents. Additionally, Hochman is consulting prosecutors and defense attorneys from the case's original trials. Over 20 relatives of the Menendez brothers attended the meeting with Hochman, which he described as “very productive” and “an informal, off-the-record discussion.” According to Hochman, the family shared their perspectives and hopes for the brothers' release. Cousin Anamaria Baralt spoke briefly to reporters after the meeting, expressing gratitude for Hochman's time. “This 35-year process has been incredibly traumatizing for us, as I'm sure you can all imagine,” she said. Baralt reiterated the family's call for immediate release, stating that going before a parole board would “only serve to re-traumatize us.” The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home in 1989. While their defense argued the brothers acted in self-defense after years of sexual abuse by their father, prosecutors contended they were motivated by financial gain. Lyle and Erik, aged 21 and 18 at the time of the crime, were sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole. In October, former District Attorney George Gascón recommended the brothers' sentences be adjusted from life without parole to 50 years to life, which could allow for parole eligibility. Gascón cited their rehabilitation efforts and the role of trauma in the crime. However, Hochman, who succeeded Gascón, is still reviewing the case and has not endorsed his predecessor's recommendation. Beyond resentencing, the Menendez brothers have filed a habeas corpus petition to introduce new evidence and requested clemency from California Governor Gavin Newsom. Fresh Hope for Menendez Brothers as DA Reviews Case The Los Angeles County District Attorney, Nathan Hochman, met with relatives of Erik and Lyle Menendez as part of an ongoing review of their high-profile case. While no decision has been made, the family and advocates for the brothers are hopeful for progress toward their release. “When I came into office, I committed to reviewing all the facts of this case,” Hochman said. He explained that the review includes thousands of pages of prison records, trial transcripts, and other legal documents. Additionally, Hochman is consulting prosecutors and defense attorneys from the case's original trials. Over 20 relatives of the Menendez brothers attended the meeting with Hochman, which he described as “very productive” and “an informal, off-the-record discussion.” According to Hochman, the family shared their perspectives and hopes for the brothers' release. Cousin Anamaria Baralt spoke briefly to reporters after the meeting, expressing gratitude for Hochman's time. “This 35-year process has been incredibly traumatizing for us, as I'm sure you can all imagine,” she said. Baralt reiterated the family's call for immediate release, stating that going before a parole board would “only serve to re-traumatize us.” The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home in 1989. While their defense argued the brothers acted in self-defense after years of sexual abuse by their father, prosecutors contended they were motivated by financial gain.
