Join us as Ocean House owner and award-winning author Deborah Goodrich Royce moderates a conversation with our featured author, Lisa Genova, a N.Y. Times bestselling author. About the Author: Lisa Genova graduated valedictorian, summa cum laude from Bates College with a degree in Biopsychology and has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Harvard University. Acclaimed as the Oliver Sacks of fiction and the Michael Crichton of brain science, Lisa has captured a special place in contemporary fiction, writing stories that are equally inspired by neurological conditions and our shared human condition. She is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels STILL ALICE, LEFT NEGLECTED, LOVE ANTHONY, and INSIDE THE O'BRIENS.  Her first work of nonfiction, REMEMBER: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting, was an instant New York Times bestseller. Her newest novel, MORE OR LESS MADDY, was released in January 2025 and became an instant #1 bestseller in Canada. About The Book: A “riveting page-turner” (Jean Kwok, New York Times bestselling author of Searching for Sylvie Lee) about a young woman diagnosed with bipolar disorder who rejects the stability and approval found in a traditionally “normal” life for a career in stand-up comedy. Maddy Banks is just like any other stressed-out freshman at NYU. Between schoolwork, exams, navigating life in the city, and a recent breakup, it's normal to feel overwhelmed. It doesn't help that she's always felt like the odd one out in her picture-perfect Connecticut family. But Maddy's latest low is devastatingly low, convincing her to go on an antidepressant. She begins to feel good, dazzling good in fact, and she soon spirals high into a wild and terrifying mania that culminates in a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. As she struggles to find her way in this new reality, navigating the complex effects bipolar has on her identity, her relationships, and her life dream, Maddy will have to figure out how to manage being both too much and not enough. With her signature “deep empathy and insight” (Booklist), Harvard-trained neuroscientist and New York Times bestselling author Lisa Genova has crafted an “affecting, harrowing, beautiful, and enlightening” (Shelf Awareness) novel that makes complicated mental health issues accessible and human. More or Less Maddy is destined to become another classic like Still Alice.   Please find out more about Lisa Genova and her books at lisagenova.com. Jack Horner inspired a character in Jurassic Park after the dino discovery of a lifetime.Jack has been fascinated by fossils for as long as he can remember. He spent his childhood digging around in the fossil-rich earth of Montana, as his father was involved in the gravel-extraction business. By the age of eight he was rewarded with his first big treasure – a real piece of dinosaur bone. As Jack's fossil collection grew, so did his passion for palaeontology. But he struggled at school, where severe undiagnosed dyslexia led his teachers and parents to write him off as lazy and spoiled. He pushed on regardless and in 1978 made a life-changing find: the world's first baby-dinosaur skeletons, and evidence that dinosaur parents cared for and raised their young like many modern birds. The discovery made front-page headlines around the world, and led to awards and accolades Jack had never thought possible. It also brought him to the attention of author Michael Crichton, who based a lead character in his hit book, Jurassic Park, on Jack. And when the call came from Stephen Spielberg to come and advise on the movie version, his fame as a dinosaur expert hit a whole new level. Jack was then himself inspired by the movie, and supervised one of his students in extracting DNA from a T. rex. It didn't work – but it led to his current 'Dino Chicken' project, where he is discovering how to bring ancient dinosaur features back to life in modern birds so he can finally have a pet dinosaur of his own.Presenter: Asya Fouks Producer: Anna Lacey and Lucy DaviesLives Less Ordinary is a podcast from the BBC World Service that brings you the most incredible true stories from around the world. Each episode a guest shares their most dramatic, moving, personal story. In the creative economy, it is more profitable to be a dead creator than a living working writer. Or that is the lesson learned from the lawsuit the Michael Crichton estate filed against The Pitt. Crichton, who earned a quarter of a billion dollars for his contribution to the NBC show ER -- his contribution being a film script that was later adapted by someone else into a network pilot -- while the actual writers, actors, and crew made considerably less. Rabbit Troop Sucks

The mustachioed mythos of Jack Ramsay (Tom Selleck) is revealed and is in full force (full stalk) within this futuristic dream. Ram-Man does NOT like rogue robots. They really twiddle his stache. He also doesn't like heights, and sometimes he becomes a real grump about it. Luckily, he's partnered up with Karen Thompson (Cynthia Rhodes) to temper the crank. And, if Ramsay can't grab a dinner with Jackie (Kirstie Alley), maybe it will work out with Thompson. Getting dinner seems like an integral plot point to this film. That and Dr. Luther (Gene Simmons) brandishing weapons and staring into your eyes like a madman. Well cast! Whatever! Machines are angry or something! Microchip! RTS fights off drones and tries future sushi. Jeremy dodges an array of heat-seeking smart bullets. La-Mar casually knocks around a horde of spider robots. Collin rides the corn-cutter bot to freedom. This future is bonks! And, in many ways, Michael Crichton, you predicted it well. Now, let's talk dino DNA.

Real Life Devon Gone again, off doing what families do. Probably eating responsibly and not playing Magic with middle schoolers. We'll get a full download when he returns from the wilds of familial bonding. Steven Steven melted in Palm Springs last weekend. Like, cartoon puddle of clothes and glasses melted. It hit 112°F, and not in the fun "desert dry heat" way—it was more like a hairdryer set to regret. But he survived the heat and a surprise 65th birthday party for his mother-in-law. (Note: surprise party for a 65-year-old in 112-degree weather? Bold.) To escape the heat and socializing, Steven brought along Timeline by Michael Crichton, tore through the whole thing, and now he won't stop recommending it. According to him, it's “a pleasant, rollicking adventure of death and destruction in the Middle Ages.” Classic beach read, if your beach has trebuchets. Ben Ben relived his childhood glory this week by annihilating two 12-year-olds at Magic: The Gathering. Old deck, newer rules, zero mercy. He's still basking in the smug warmth of that victory and considering building a commemorative statue of himself out of old booster packs. In nerdier news, Ben continues to experiment with Bazzite OS, a Linux distro that somehow convinced Forza Horizon 5 to run smoothly. He also tried out Wheel World, a cell-shaded, bike-themed Zelda-like that nobody asked for, but he's glad it exists. Streaming from PC to handheld? He recommends: Install Sunshine on your PC Install Moonlight on your handheld device Plug in with Ethernet if you can Pray to the latency gods It's working so far. Maybe this is the future. Maybe this is now. Future or Now Ben brought in a fascinating bit of anti-AI-fakery this week. Researchers at Cornell have developed a way to embed invisible “codes” into light, which act as hidden watermarks in videos. Basically: lighting at press conferences, buildings, or even Zoom calls could carry encrypted signals that make it easy to verify video authenticity later. It's subtle, elegant, and extremely cyberpunk. The best part? You won't notice the difference. But your editing software will. Check it out:

Dan O'Bannon, the co-screenwriter of ALIEN (1979), once stated (paraphrasing) that nothing is original but writers borrow from others. Well, the new science fiction horror film, ASH (2025), certainly does that. It has a bit of ALIEN, among other science fiction films, as well as the novels and works of Michael Crichton. From IMDB: “A woman wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. Her investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events.”Ash is the directorial feature length debut of the artist known as Flying Lotus based on a screenplay by Jonni Remmler. The film stars Eiza Gonzalez and Aaron Paul. The film includes science fiction, horror, and techno-thriller elements within it. Getting 71% good reviews by critics while only 54% by audiences, your co-hosts take a look at this highly debated film and give their thoughts.

Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech TrainingMatt Fanslow dives into an unexpected but fascinating comparison between Jurassic Park and the auto repair industry, exploring themes of chaos theory, unintended consequences, and the importance of foundational knowledge. Drawing parallels from the iconic film (and Michael Crichton's novels), Matt discusses how small decisions—like cutting corners or skipping fundamentals—can lead to big, unpredictable outcomes in business, careers, and life.Key Topics Discussed:"Your Scientists Were So Preoccupied With Whether They Could, They Didn't Stop to Think If They Should"How the pursuit of innovation without foresight mirrors challenges in the automotive industry. The dangers of prioritizing profit or speed over sustainability and safety.Chaos Theory & The Butterfly EffectSmall, seemingly insignificant actions can have massive consequences (e.g., a poorly coded security system in Jurassic Park → dinosaur chaos).Applying this to business: How initial conditions (hiring, training, ethics) shape long-term success or failure. The Perils of Skipping FundamentalsIan Malcolm's critique in Jurassic Park: "You stood on the shoulders of giants but never learned the underlying theory."Why technicians can't jump straight to advanced diagnostics (e.g., lab scopes) without mastering electrical fundamentals."Fundamental ≠ easy. It's the foundation everything else relies on."Unintended Consequences in Auto RepairNedry's sabotage: How underpaying for critical services (e.g., software, training) backfires.Diet analogy: One unhealthy choice can undermine progress—just like one overlooked repair detail can lead to comebacks.Awareness & the "Little Things"The importance of paying attention to details in workflows, customer service, and team dynamics. Why hindsight often reveals blind spots—and how to cultivate proactive awareness.Notable Quotes:"Chaos theory isn't about randomness—it's about how tiny, early decisions create unpredictable outcomes.""You can't win the lottery without buying a ticket, but you also can't master diagnostics without understanding electricity.""Respect the journey. As though starring in a new Jurassic World movie isn't a big enough deal, Luna Blaise also boasts an especially exciting franchise achievement. She's right smack in the middle of one of the most iconic set pieces from Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park novel, a set piece that was famously cut from Steven Spielberg's original film.In Jurassic World Rebirth, Blaise plays Teresa Delgado. Just before starting her first year at college, Teresa takes a boat trip with her father (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), her little sister (Audrina Miranda), and her boyfriend (David Iacono). Little do they know, they're sailing through Mosasaurs territory. Fortunately, Scarlett Johansson's Zora Bennett and her team swoop in to save them, but the Mosasaurs sets its sights on their boat instead and the entire group winds up stranded on Ile Saint-Hubert, an island that InGen once used to run a secret R&D facility. While trying to make their way to a rumored village on the island, Teresa and her family are left with no choice but to steal an inflatable raft right out from under a sleeping T-Rex's nose and ride it down river to get them closer to this supposed safe haven. With Jurassic World Rebirth now playing in theaters nationwide, Blaise joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to revisit her journey to the franchise, a journey that included two hit TV shows - Fresh Off the Boat and Manifest. She also recapped her Jurassic World audition, revealed her character's backstory, explained why she thinks of Garcia-Rulfo and Iacono as family, and, of course, walked me through exactly what it was like to film that river raft scene.
