Vanity Project's new treatise is as follows: if you are thinking about giving a standing ovation, vomit. If you are a little too drunk, vomit. Do you believe in bulimia? Vomit. Are you an exhibitionist looking for a new act? Get vomited on. That's what's known in these parts as a Roman Shower! We've done piss, we've done smell, and this time we're espousing an abject-driven cultural study with a new subject: barf. Sure, our compulsion to talk could be likened to word vomit, like a cultural hangover you get from gluttonous over-indulging. The girls sit over the toilet-bowl-cum-microphone and tickle the tonsils in the hope of bringing up something worthwhile. Such sites include pregnancy-induced vomit scenes in Wild at Heart (1990), erotic vomiting scenes in Sex In Public (1998), Lady Gaga and Millie Brown at SXSW (2014), Dodie Bellamy clogging Eileen Myles' toilet (2015), Laura in Spewcastle, and American Horror Story: Delicate (2023). Emetophobics need not apply...this may well be our messiest episode yet... Vanity Project is moving to fortnightly paywalled content. Ms. Millie Brown started her organization, Tear's of a Mother's Cry, in 2009 to serve the women of Baltimore who have lost their children to gun violence. She has now served over 1000 mothers, providing much needed support to the bereaved. In 2019 alone, Baltimore had 348 killings—90 percent by gunfire. The murder rate (58 per 100,000 people) now exceeds that of previous global homicide capitals of El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. Each halved its homicide rates in the past five years; Baltimore’s climbed 65 percent. This terrible rate of gun violence has continued even in the time of the novel coronovirus. Today, Ms. Millie joins host JJ to talk about the stories of two of these mothers, and their sons taken by homicide--Ms. Tracy Coleman, and Ms. Burnett McFadden. Ms. Tracy lost two sons, Cornelius and Cordell Bruce, in January of 2020. Ms. B lost three sons, Reginald, Randolph and Linton, in the space of several months in 2005.
This one was a bit difficult for me: when I'm talking to people about gear or circuits or code, I have no problem. But when it comes to talking about how our bodies work? I'm generally at a loss. Luckily, El Larson was very helpful as I stumbled through the words to talk about what she does. So when you hear me struggling, there it is. In any case, it is really cool to hear about El's work with the Tibetan Bowls and a modular synth. She's thoughtful about the way that she integrates the instruments into her practice, and is also willing to talk about it. So finding out how she works, how she prepares for a session and how she deals with the variety of personalities she encounters - it's all in the open. Additionally, though, it's great to hear about a completely different musical practice, and to find out how sound can be used to physically help people. I've not participated in a session (although now I'm pretty intrigued), but I've heard incredible things from friends, and am very curious. In addition to the sound practice, El is also an active artist/performer - with a recent high-profile project with Millie Brown being a prime example. Balancing the practice with the artistic urge is at the heart of El's life, and it was really interesting to learn more about it. You can learn more about El's work at her website. Enjoy!
