Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week's conversation comes in two parts. Like it's geographical spread, northern hemisphere to southern hemisphere, think of this two part discussion as a way of engaging both hemispheres of your brain--the creative and the analytic. My guest is fellow Stanford alum and founder of The Jazz & Democracy Project® (J&D) (https://www.jazzdemocracy.com), Wesley “Dr. Wes” J. Watkins. After several years working in the education sector, Dr. Wes launched the program in November 2009 at Rosa Parks Elementary School, located in San Francisco's historic Fillmore District. J&D is a music integrated curriculum that utilizes jazz as a metaphor to bring democracy to life, enrich the study and teaching of history, government, civics and culture, and inspire youth to become active, positive contributors to their communities. He first proposed the curriculum as part of his undergraduate honors program at Stanford's School of Education and later conducted research for his undergraduate honors thesis at Oxford University where he engaged and learned from music educators at both local elementary schools and world renowned secondary institutions. Now based in Sydney, Australia, J&D has traveled to countries all over the world and, in these times of global social transition, Dr. Wes anticipates continued opportunities to feature and further innovate using tools that will leave lasting impact on the ways that youth and educators approach building and living in their communities and beyond. This interview was recorded in person with the great Chris Botti. On a whim I checked out Chris' website and saw he was going to be performing in my neck of the woods, which at the time (September 2023) was in Virginia Beach, VA.I had interviewed Chris before, so it didn't take long for he and I to reacquaint and put an interview on the books.I solicited questions to ask Chris from one of the popular Facebook groups dedicated to trumpeters, so all in all it was a nice time, and probably a bit of a break for Chris from the usual "pop star" interviews he endures constantly!Episode highlights:00:08 A Memorable Encounter01:48 Diving into the Interview02:50 Chris' Musical Journey04:22 The Evolution of the Music Industry06:08 Challenges and Changes in the Music Scene10:50 The Impact of Streaming and Social Media16:50 Reflections on Jazz and Inspirations26:43 The Audience's Listening Preferences27:04 The Impact of Al Schmidt on Diana Krall's Career28:28 Live vs. Studio Recording Techniques28:42 Favorite Equipment for Live Performances29:25 The Role of Compression in Music31:05 Microphones and Their Historical Significance32:01 Recording and Releasing Albums33:05 Deborah's Theme and Jeremy Lubbock's Influence34:27 Daily Routine and Maintaining Skills35:33 The Unique Sound of Vintage Trumpets39:34 The Trumpet Dynamics Podcast43:30 Chris' Fearless Performances45:34 The Changing Music Industry50:53 Final Thoughts and ReflectionsGuest contact:WebsiteInstagram @chrisbottimusicFacebook

In a world where aging is often feared, award-nominated author, poet and psychotherapist Jane Seskin, who is 80 years of age, takes readers on an emotional road trip where they can celebrate the joys and challenges of aging. In Older, Wiser, Shorter: The Truth and Humor of Life After 65 (Tallfellow Press, 2024), Jane reflects on how resilience and self-discovery helped her combat life's trials and tribulations, especially as she grew older. Through a collection of 89 poems, Jane redefines the narrative of aging and offers readers a positive take on what is often perceived as a negative. Older, Wiser, Shorter is an insightful collection of poetry; authentic, funny, quirky and heartfelt, acknowledging the physical vulnerabilities, emotional losses, and surprises people encounter in their senior years. Jane also pays tribute to the sense of power, resilience and new-found joys people discover as they acknowledge and accept their aging. Jane's talent for finding the universal connecting tissue of even our most intimate moments will resonate with readers seeking to discover new ways to honor the past, celebrate the present and welcome the future. Jane says that growing old is a gift. Believe in it. Respect it. Embrace it. From varicose veins to doctors' appointments to forgetting why you walked into the kitchen, Older Wiser Shorter illuminates the ups and downs of growing older, one poem at a time. Not to be feared but welcomed, aging is natural, exciting, and it's better than the alternative! Said Mary Pipher, author of Women Rowing North and My Life in Light, “I sat down to read one poem last night and I ended up reading half the book. I feel as though I know you. You have definitely captured the experience of aging.” Jane is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the author of 13 books, most recently the poetry collection Older, Wiser, Shorter: The Truth and Humor of Life After 65. Sometimes laughably simple, other times simply profound, Jane's collection is a non-saccharine and delightful account of what getting older is really like. And she actually lost two inches of her height by her 8th decade! In this episode, Jane talks about: stereotypically negative view of aging into a humorous and intimate poetry collection How writing has allowed her to explore self-discovery and resulted in resilience  The process of writing poetry versus her other works Her mindset that aging is natural, can be exciting, and something to look forward to How creating each poem is an experience in navigating aging Jane also has written nonfiction articles and poetry online and for national magazines and journals. Twenty of her poems were published in Cosmopolitan Magazine, five poems in Woman's Day. Eighteen of her posts have been published in the Metropolitan Diary column in the New York Times. Jane has been a writer-in-residence at the Vermont Studio Center and Noepe Center for Literary Arts in Martha's Vineyard. She has also been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Jane is a practicing psychotherapist, who counseled survivors in individual and group treatment at the Crime Victims Treatment Center in New York for 20 years. In her free time, she enjoys the theater, walking by the Hudson River, visiting with friends, reading poetry and mysteries (Louise Penny, David Baldacci, Donna Leon) and listening to jazz (Keith Jarrett, Houston Person, Chris Botti). Jane wrote therapeutic soundbites on Twitter under the title: “Emotional Band-Aid. Small Steps for Change.” Find out more at: https://www.olderwisershorter.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/maria-leonard-olsen/support

Send us a Text Message. This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Michael Lazaroff, Executive Director and Owner, Jazz Cruises, the world's leader in full-ship charter jazz music cruises, having produced over 90 full-ship charters featuring more than 2000 musicians including several legendary performers and dozens of Grammy winners. Jazz Cruisesis comprised principally of a portfolio of three theme cruises: The Jazz Cruise, launched in 2001, the first and only full-ship cruise charter dedicated to “straight-ahead” jazz; The Smooth Jazz Cruise, the company's flagship cruise it holds twice each spring. The Smooth Jazz Cruise sold out its first sailing in 2004 and has held 34 consecutive sold out cruises since; and, Botti at Sea, designed in the spirit and style of Grammy-winning world renowned trumpeter Chris Botti. I wrote about Michael and Jazz Cruises in my new release, The Joy of Cruising Again http://amzn.to/3lAfyON. I got to meet Michael when I checked off a bucket list item by sailing The Smooth Jazz Cruise in 2023 which included performances by just about ‘everyone who is anyone in smooth jazz,' such as Marcus Miller, Boney James, Gerald Albright, Candy Dulfer, Bryan Culbertson, Take 6, and one of my favorite comedians, Alonzo Bodden. I got to take photos with Michael McDonald, and with Peter White. I even met rising saxophone star Vince Ingala who agreed to come on The Joy of Cruising Podcast when I was first starting out and for that I am forever appreciative. (Vincent Ingala: Performing On Theme Cruises https://www.buzzsprout.com/2113608/12246466) Many of you know about my love for music, and smooth jazz is my favorite genre. I have wanted to profile Michael and his importance to live jazz on the ocean since my first cruising book, The Joy of Cruising. I remember my reaction when Michael agreed to talk about Jazz Cruises, LLC in The Joy of Cruising Again, and I am similarly ecstatic to get to chat with him again for the global cruise community to hear.Support the Show.Support thejoyofcruisingpodcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/2113608/supporters/newSupport Me https://www.buymeacoffee.com/drpaulthContact Me https://www.thejoyofcruising.net/contact-me.htmlBook Cruises https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingPodcast-BookACruiseUS Orders (coupon code joyofcruisingpodcast)The Joy of Cruising https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingCruising Interrupted https://bit.ly/CruisingInterruptedThe Joy of Cruising Again https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingAgainIntl Orders via Amazon

That is gained from mastering the skills and learning to follow. Ralph Rolle is a prime example of learning to follow becoming born to lead.Ralph followed his older brother in learning the drums, but that he led him to becoming a premier musician, who has created music with everyone from super producer Nile Rodgers and his iconic disco/R&B group Chic, pop legends Sting and Bono, the 1st woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Aretha Franklin, hip-hop giants Biggie Smalls and Queen Latifah, jazz superstar Chris Botti, the queen of Neo-Soul Erykah Badu, Vanessa Williams, soul crooner D'Angelo, songstylist India Arie, Lady Gaga, Dolly Pardon, Bono, Roger Daltry, John Legend, Joss Stone, Elvis Costello and playing in the resident band for N.B.C. ‘It's Showtime at The Apollo' for over 15 seasons. Ralph has also served as the musical director for syndicated “The Caroline Rhea Show” and he served in the same role for Japanese R&B/soul superstar Toshi Kubota.Ralph took the time, any time he had the time, to stop and cook and enjoy life. It helped him to come down from the tension and time on the road that was always in motion. Cooking, another gift he received from his mother, gave him the peace of mind he needed to slow down and breathe. And in learning his way around the kitchen, he started to bake. hat stayed with him and when he was hanging out with his musician friends, he would have his signature cookies. At first they laughed, but quickly the request became “please bring those cookies with you!”Over time, his cookies found their way into the hands of clients such as Westside Market, Franks Market, and many more. Good Morning America host chose Soul Snacks for her holiday gifting in 2011. In 2015, Bette Midler and Ralph met when Nile Rodgers and Chic were the guest artists and Ms. Midler's annual Hulaween Charity event. Ralph had his “cookie calling card” with him. Ms. Midler loved Soul Snacks so much that she placed orders for her family and friends. Soon, he was selling his cookies at Melba's, a legendary soul food restaurant in Harlem. The orders poured in and soon, he was featured in CNN, BET, ABC and FOX networks, in New York Times newspaper and in The Source and Vibe magazines. This episode of "The Other Side of The Bell" is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. Please enjoy this conversation with John and world-renowned trumpeter, Chris Botti. Chris was featured back in  Episode #24, and now again in Episode #113 with the release of his first album in over 10 years.  A video version of this episode is also available on YouTube. About Chris Botti Trumpeter Chris Botti s renowned for his versatility in both jazz and pop music. His mother, a pianist and teacher, was his first musical influence. Botti began playing trumpet at nine and fully committed to it at 12 after hearing Miles Davis. His early achievements include performing at Carnegie Hall with the McDonald's All American High School Jazz band. During his formative years, Botti was significantly influenced by his time at Indiana University, where he studied under renowned jazz educators David Baker and William Adam. This period was crucial in shaping his musical style and approach. Botti's career took off with short touring stints with Frank Sinatra and Buddy Rich, and his relationship with Paul Simon in the 1990s further expanded his musical collaborations. Additionally, Botti's association with Sting, particularly touring as a featured soloist in Sting's "Brand New Day" tour, played a pivotal role in his career. This collaboration not only broadened his musical exposure but also significantly influenced the trajectory of his career, marking a key phase in his development as a musician. His solo debut album, "First Wish," was released in 1995, marking the start of a successful solo career. Botti's work often bridges jazz and pop, demonstrated in albums like "A Thousand Kisses Deep" and "When I Fall in Love." His album "Impressions" won a Grammy in 2013 for Best Pop Instrumental Album, a category for which he had received several nominations. Chris Botti's current projects showcase his enduring creativity and versatility as a musician, including his Blue Note Records debut, "Vol. 1," released on October 20th. This album marks a fresh start for Botti, emphasizing a return to the jazz essence of his artistry. "Vol. 1" features beautiful new ballad renditions of standards, including “Old Folks,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Someday My Prince Will Come,” and “Blue In Green.” This project signifies Botti crossing back to acoustic jazz and classic standards after achieving crossover success in both jazz and pop arenas. In addition to his new album, Botti is embarking on an innovative venture, "Botti at Sea." This luxury cruise, personally curated by Botti, promises an exceptional experience of ensemble entertainment and showmanship. Scheduled to sail from February 8 to 15, 2024, the cruise departs from Miami with stops in Aruba and Curaçao. "Botti at Sea" is set to offer a unique blend of music and luxury, further highlighting Botti's flair for combining artistic pursuits with novel experiences. Episode Highlights:20:34 - There's a history of mastery before you, and you're trying to serve that. Make your own case, follow your own pathway, but always with reverence for what came before you. So, that's how I look at it. I will never be as great as those people, as Dave Sanborn, Mike Brecker, and John Coltrane. My contribution is minute compared to theirs. That's how I see it.39:50 - We're all compelled to do it. We're compelled to go towards the sea and make music, and write our songs. But to some extent and not exclusively, but in majority, all I do when I hear music that I've made is pick apart the little things that I think are wrong, the little things that I miss. So, in a way, the answer is never, but obviously, it has to be released. It has to come out. So, all you can kind of do is go with your gut.54:01 - Some people are going to be more natural at kind of the overt entertainment. Some people are going to be more comfortable as players. But in the context of them playing, they are entertaining. You feel their commitment. And it's a really important idea to know who you are and to be the best version of that, but not try to be what you're not.ContactFresh Coast Jazz FestivalAndy SnitzerLinkedInWebsiteSpotify

Acclaimed trumpeter Chris Botti has collaborated with some of the biggest superstars on the planet, including Sting, Paul Simon, Barbra Streisand, Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, and more. He successfully crossed over from jazz renown to pop stardom — but his first album in more than a decade finds him crossing back. “Vol.1,” releasing in October from Blue Note Records, is in many ways a fresh start for the trumpeter. It is a small group project focused on acoustic jazz and classic standards. “I turned 60 in 2022, at a time that seemed like a restart for so many things in the world,” Botti said. “I wanted to strip away all the orchestral arrangements and special guests and focus more on my playing, the playing of my band, and these jazz classics that we always love playing on stage.” He joins Dr. Alan Campbell this week on Watching America to talk about his career and his latest project. https://chrisbotti.com

Singer, pianist and songwriter Laila Biali recently released Your Requests, built around a collection of songs from the Great American Songbook that were requested by her fans. After a string of projects of her original songs and more contemporary covers, the album was a departure for her. After spending years living in New York, Laila moved back to her native Canada to raise her son, along with her husband, drummer and producer Ben Wittman, who she met when the two were working with the singer-songwriter Paula Cole. Laila had established herself in New York as a reliable and sought after collaborator - she worked with Sting, Chris Botti and Suzanne Vega. After moving to Toronto she began focusing more on her solo career. It paid off. In 2018 she won a Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. And she hosts the popular radio show Saturday Night Jazz on CBC 2. This week we go on a speaker evaluation journey with Ara and his daughter. But not before we read your emails and the week's news. News: Android TV rolls out user profiles, but there's a caveat Sling TV launches new features for sports fans, including picture-in-picture mode and an iOS widget 8K Association Launches Content Awareness Campaign YouTube TV hikes price to $72.99 per month due to rising ‘content costs' Other: Speakers Designed For REAL Rooms - Larsen 4.2 Review Tame Bright Speakers JBL Speaker Makeover but I didn't have a tweeter. Bought Dayton Audio DC25T-8 1" Titanium Dome Tweeter for $17 a piece. These tweeters are very efficient, 93db vs 88db for the entire 2500. This mismatch was very off putting. The tweeter was overpowering the woofer and it was fatiguing to listen to. So I researched how to reduce the high frequencies otherwise known as Tweeter attenuation Tweeter attenuation is the reduction of voltage & power to a tweeter to decrease its volume output. This is usually done with a resistor network with values chosen to match the expected load of a stereo, amplifier, or speaker crossover. Essentially what I did was cut the positive (red) lead and insert a resistor. There is a formula that is used to determine how much attenuation a specific resistor value achieves So I bought a few resistors and went through the process of removing the tweeter and clipping in a resistor and listening. I used alligator clips during the testing phase and I soldered the final result and shrink wrapped the connection.  In my case I ended up with a 5 ohm resistor which resulted in a 9 db attenuation. So now the speaker is no longer excessively bright and the Dayton Audio tweeters are much better than the JBL titanium tweeters. There was much more detail and just the right amount of “brightness”. You can do this if you have speakers that are bright as well. But you probably won't need to go as high a value as I did since the mismatch was so large. Speakers are designed to work together so if the speakers are bright they were designed that way. But even still if you love you speakers but want to tame them a bit you can easily do this. I created a video that I uploaded to YouTube. It's not a how to but it visually shows you what i am talking about. I even try to record the before and after using a good microphone. But it's impossible to hear the difference. In person the difference is dramatic. Just make sure you use audio grade resistors. Part Express has plenty and they are a couple of dollars each.  Once I had everything dialed in I wanted to do a blind listening test. For that I asked my daughter to be the guinea pig. She accepted and got a huge lesson in auditioning speakers. The speakers being auditioned: JBL 2500 (Ara Redo all JBL components) JBL 2500 (Ara Redo wit DA Tweeter and 5 ohm resistor) JBL LX22 (Ara Redo) CSS Audio Criton 2D Kit Ascend Acoustics Sierra 1 (Ara Redo all Ascend Acoustics components) We listened to the identical parts of each song on all speakers. First Test I asked her to pick a song that she liked. I don't remember the name but it was by a band called Camino.  I played it on all five different speakers and asked her if she had a favorite. To me it sounded terrible on all speakers. The mix was a jumble of sounds that was just bad. She actually agreed but selected the Ascend Acoustics as the best worst sounding example of crappy music. That was me editorializing. Second Test The first minute of “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyed. Wow! What a difference. I could see on my daughter's face that she was blown away by the imaging. The song starts out with an old timey AM radio feel in the right channel. Then when the effect disappears and the guitar comes up smack dab in the middle of your listening position. You just smile. I then start over and switch speakers. The other thing that I found interesting is that for most speakers she couldn't tell which pair was on. By the end of the test, she started recognizing the characteristics of some of the speakers and was able to tell which ones were on. Test two goes to JBL 2500 with the DA tweeter. We listened to seven total tracks with the results below: Fifth of May by Zach Bryan - JBL 2500 with DA Tweeter Dawns by Zach Bryan - JBL 2500 with DA Tweeter Tin Pan Alley by SRV - CSS Audio (so much bass!) Everything She Ain't by Haily Whitters - JBL 2500 wit h DA Tweeter I have Got You Under My Skin Live in Boston by Chris Botti featuring Katharine McPhee - Ascend Acoustics In the end the JBL 2500 with the Dayton Audio tweeter was the speaker my daughter picked most. But all these speakers sounded really good. It really comes down to what kind of music you like listening to determine what speakers you will like. In reality all these speakers performed well. If you like bass heavy music then the CSS Audio speakers would be your go to. If you like clear detail then the Ascend Acoustics might be what you would go with. By the way, the CSS audio has great highs and the Ascend Acoustics has great lows. Just not as good as the other.  But what really surprised me is how well the modified JBL 2500 did against speakers costing $600 to $800 more. If you have any sort of wood working skills, you can build yourself some amazing speakers for a fraction of what you would pay for commercial products.  Our final recommendation is to consider the type of music you listen to and do research. Once you narrow it down, audition the speakers if possible. Take advantage of in home trials. Try to have them in the house at the same time and keep the ones that sound best. It's a lot of work but speakers practically last forever so choose wisely!
