Last week I published an episode about Black Pop Singers who emigrated to Europe in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of these gentlemen settled in the German-speaking countries, where there was a ready market for the “otherness” and exoticism that they embodied. The one outlier on that episode was Henry Wright, born in 1933, who in the late 1950s toured Italy with Lionel Hampton's band and elected to remain there. With a voice as suave and seductive as any of the great crooners of the 1950s and 1960s, Henry Wright first came to international prominence as the voice on the record to which Sophia Loren performed her legendary striptease in the 1962 film Ieri, oggi, domani [Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow]. He went on to make a great impact on Italian pop music throughout the 1960s. A couple years ago I began collecting the ultra-rare (and costly) records of Henry Wright, which formed the basis of two separate Countermelody episodes. Here is the second of those episodes, first published as a bonus episode nearly three years ago now, which is devoted to Henry Wright's recordings of pop standards, most of them from the so-called Great American Songbook, but a few of them English-language adaptations of favorite songs originally in Italian. The program begins with one of Henry Wright's first Italian recordings, which features standards by Duke Ellington and Harold Arlen. The majority of the music on the program, however, is from Henry Wright's 1967 LP, Prisoner of Amore, in which he is joined by the doodling pianism of Romano Mussolini (youngest son of the late dictator), and the somewhat overwrought arrangements of Giulio Libano. In spite of the excesses of his colleagues, Henry Wright still manages to make a positive showing in this, (as far as I know!) his final recording. In the course of the episode, I go down a number of rabbit holes that go off in a number of interesting directions: the songs of Harry Warren, the early pop stylings of Gérard Souzay in the first flush of youth as a pop crooner on the French airwaves, and the fascinating life and times of the pre-hippie Eden Ahbez, best known as the composer of “Nature Boy,” whose further compositions were performed by (among others) the sophisticated and cosmopolitan Eartha Kitt and Ahbez himself. Countermelody is the podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. This is the full show for February 19, 2026. 0:30 The United States Department of Justice has joined a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Unified School District over a policy that categorizes schools by race and ties funding, smaller class sizes, and enhanced programs to race. We break down what this “PHBAO” classification means, why attaching benefits based on race raises serious Equal Protection concerns, and how the 14th Amendment applies when government actors sort students by skin color. Is this equity… or is it government-sponsored discrimination under a new acronym? 9:30 Plus, we cover the Top 3 Things You Need to Know. The Department of Transportation is ordering 550 truck driving schools across the country to close. It looks like the Chicago Bears are leaving Illinois for Indiana. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Prince Andrew is being investigated for suspicion of misconduct in office. 12:30 Get Prodovite Plus from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. We unpack what that would actually mean, the political strategy behind it, and the bigger question: what does “law and order” mean in today’s America? 16:00 We got a question in for our American Mamas Teri Netterville and Kimberly Burelson. If you could rub a magic lamp and get just one wish for America — what would it be? From the days of three-network news to today’s explosion of social media platforms like X, the Mamas reflect on how information — and misinformation — shapes division in our country. They talk about the pandemic years, shadow bans, competing narratives, and the challenge of figuring out what’s actually true in a world where everyone has a microphone. But the conversation goes deeper than media. It’s about friendships strained over politics, assumptions made about neighbors, and how quickly labels replace relationships. When did who you vote for become more important than who you are? And how do we get back to a place where disagreement doesn’t mean disdain? It’s an honest, heartfelt discussion about truth, unity, and loving people even when you don’t share their politics — a reminder that restoring America might start with a little more light… and a lot more grace. If you'd like to ask our American Mamas a question, go to our website, AmericanGroundRadio.com/mamas and click on the Ask the Mamas button. 23:00 New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani built his campaign on a simple, viral promise: only the “uber wealthy” would pay more. Not you. Not your neighbor. Just the fat cats, the yacht crowd, the so-called one percent. But now? The Mamdani is floating a nearly 10% property tax hike — and that doesn’t just land on penthouse owners. It hits homeowners, retirees on fixed incomes, small landlords, and yes, renters, because higher property taxes don’t stay put. They trickle down into higher rents and higher costs for everyone. So what happened to “only the wealthy will pay”? We dig into how big spending promises — free programs, expanded benefits, sweeping commitments — eventually collide with math. When the tax base shrinks and high earners relocate, who makes up the difference? 26:00 Colorado just lost its largest corporation. Palantir Technologies — the $300+ billion AI firm that moved from Silicon Valley to Denver in 2020 citing cultural differences with Big Tech — has now packed up again, relocating its headquarters to Miami. The move follows months of protests outside its Denver offices over its contracts with the Israeli military and federal agencies like ICE, along with growing regulatory pressure from Colorado’s new AI law. So why leave? And why Florida? We break down whether this is about taxes, regulation, activist pressure, or a broader shift as companies seek business-friendly, right-to-work states. As America’s economy evolves, Palantir’s exit raises a bigger question: which vision of governance will win the future of growth? 32:00 Get TrimROX from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. Go to vni.life/agr and use the promo code AGR20. 32:30 A tragic shooting at a Rhode Island ice rink is raising disturbing questions. Authorities say the gunman, Robert Dorgan, allegedly targeted his ex-wife, their son, and members of her family during a high school hockey game — and that this was not random, but deliberate. Reports indicate there had been long-standing family conflict, including disputes over his transgender identity and a divorce that followed. As more details emerge, the story becomes even more heartbreaking: a fractured family, mental health concerns, and a violent act that devastated multiple lives in a single moment. We examine what’s known about the case, the role family estrangement may have played, and the broader cultural tensions surrounding gender identity, media coverage, and mental health. Most importantly, we ask the difficult question: how do we recognize warning signs and prevent tragedies like this before they happen? 35:30 Sometimes the left tries so hard to make a point… that they end up making the conservative argument for us. Case in point: columnist Jill Filipovic recently argued that if gender-affirming surgeries for minors are banned, then all cosmetic surgeries for minors — nose jobs, breast augmentations, and the like — should be banned too (with exceptions for true medical necessity). Well… yes. We unpack how that statement actually reinforces a broader concern many conservatives have been raising: maybe we shouldn’t be encouraging cosmetic alterations for children at all. Maybe we shouldn’t be over-sexualizing teenagers. Maybe we shouldn’t be permanently altering bodies that haven’t fully developed. We also look at the cultural pressure to “fix” perfectly healthy bodies — from Hollywood cautionary tales like Jennifer Grey to today’s social media-driven beauty standards — and ask whether our society is sending young people the wrong message about identity and self-worth. At the heart of it all is a bigger question: instead of telling kids there’s something wrong with their bodies, should we be teaching them they were created with purpose and value just as they are? 39:30 Kansas lawmakers have drawn a clear line. After the legislature passed a bill defining sex in state law as biological sex at birth, Democratic Governor Laura Kelly vetoed it. Lawmakers responded by overriding her veto — and now the measure is officially the law in Kansas. To wrap up today's show we unpack the political showdown, the cultural debate behind it, and the broader question of identity in today’s America. We also reflect on a simple but powerful idea echoed by voices like Sophia Loren and Oscar Wilde: real confidence comes from being comfortable in your own skin. At the end of the day, the conversation turns to purpose, design, and the belief that we are not accidents — that we are created intentionally and with value. May your pursuit of happiness bring you joy. On zmienił świat mody i wyznaczył nowe standardy piękna” – mówiła Rostkowska-Niemczyk. Zamiast prowokacji szukał zmysłowości, klasy i naturalnego piękna. Zawsze potrafił sprostać wymaganiom kobiet”.W rozmowie wielokrotnie powracał motyw dziedzictwa i niepowtarzalności stylu mistrza.„To ikona. I Valentino Garavani ten styl miał”.

Content Warning: This conversation contains themes of disordered eating and child abuseJameela Jamil is among the most beautiful public figures who hold some of the strongest anti-beauty sentiments. She was scouted for television while walking down the street and later hired to host a series on Channel 4. As she shares in the episode, this role reinforced many of the harmful patriarchal standards about women's beauty and bodies that she learned as a child. Jameela shares that she didn't feel beautiful growing up, and despite her early beauty icons being voluptuous women of color, she held herself to an unnatural standard of thinness and battled anorexia to achieve it. Her ascent into the public eye only exacerbated her struggles with her weight. By her late twenties, she began to question why she was being held to such rigid expectations by fashion media execs who couldn't meet them; ultimately, she decided to fight back.Since then, Jameela has made a name for herself as an actress, public figure, and outspoken advocate for women's rights. During our conversation, we discussed personal growth and why women must meet their own high standards, whether men like it or not, including her partner. Jameela doesn't hold back when it comes to ageism in fashion and politics, and the detrimental impact of AI on our ability to distinguish reality from virtual reality. We talk about her time on The Good Place and how Ted Danson helped make her debut performance so strong. Jameela lays out why she believes public figures have a role in advocating for transparency in costs and recovery of major cosmetic procedures. She also makes it clear that she is comfortable learning and growing publicly, so long as she leads with care and facts. When famed tenor and songwriter Pasquale Esposito was growing up in Naples, Italy, the music of Enrico Caruso would play throughout his house, inspiring him to sing at the local church in town. His dream was to come to America, to study and eventually perform. And that's exactly what he did. Fast forward twenty-five years, and Pasquale is now performing internationally to critical acclaim, and on Dec. 10, he'll perform along side world-renowned conductor Maestro Carlo Ponti on the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, California, presenting a magical Holiday concert of American and Italian traditions through spirited carols and emotional Neapolitan melodies. And I'm honored to speak with both gentlemen today on my show. I've known Carlo for some time now, and not only am I a huge fan of his work, but I admire his incredible talent and creative style. I'm also honored to call him a friend. Most people know he's the eldest son of the beautiful and talented Ms. Sophia Loren and filmmaker Carlo Ponti, and one can only imagine life growing up among such talent. But not only did Carlo inherit his parents gift of performance, he's lived his life in service of the arts, having founded the Los Angeles Virtuosi Orchestra, which raises awareness and funds for music education in the Los Angeles area. He shares his gift of philanthropy with Pasquale, who founded Notable Music and Arts, a non-profit focused on promoting cultural exchange through music, dance, theater, film, visual arts, and literature. We'll talk with both of them about this, in addition to their work, life, and upcoming performance at the Broad on 12/10. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to playwright, author and educator Luke Yankee, son of Oscar-winning actress Eileen Heckart. Luke spoke to us about his biography about his mother, Just Outside the Spotlight, his then upcoming play about his mother and the many, many tales he witnessed growing up the son of his actor/mother who was anything but a wilting flower. Eileen was a pistol and o're to be the subject of one of her pointed barbs! We also talk about host Josh Mills' mother Edie Adams who Luke had a first person connection to as well as some of Luke's mother's best known films, The Bad Seed, Barefoot in the Park, Butterflies Are Free and more. Along with that comes great tales about Goldie Hawn, George Segal, Soupy Sales, Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe and many more. While all of these amazing stories are told with a fun and mirth, there was one moment that genuinely choked us up in it's beautiful humanity that we just loved hearing. It was a pure and honest moment that gave us a truly well rounded picture of the complex woman that was Eileen Heckert. Broadway, the big screen and even a pivotal role on the small screen on The Mary Tyler Moore Show are all part of this episode with Luke Yankee. Everyone has a story.

Icons represent ideas that are bigger than themselves.Myths are stories that represent ideas that are bigger than themselves.Archetypes are symbols of recognizable patterns of behavior.Letters of the alphabet are symbols (graphemes) that represents sounds (phonemes,) just as notes on a sheet of music are symbols that represent sounds.A role model is a personal icon, an archetype that you have chosen to emulate. The human brain loves symbols and patterns. This is why we embrace icons, myths, and archetypes. When we recognize a pattern that has been stored in our subconscious, we call it intuition. When we hear a pattern that has been repeated too many times, we call it a predictable cliché.Icons, myths, and archetypes evolve with each new generation.I was born in the 12th year of the 18-year Baby Boom generation that began exactly 9 months and 10 minutes after the end of World War II.Marilyn Monroe was the iconic sex symbol. The Statue of Liberty, Yankee Stadium, Yellowstone, and Woodstock were America's iconic places. Rolls Royce, Cadillac, Corvette, Camaro and Mustang were iconic cars. Tetris, Pong, and Pac-Man were iconic video games. The mythic stories of Baby Boomers were mostly about combat. Sometimes we fought the Indians of the Old West. Sometimes we fought the Germans, or the Japanese. We fought the Establishment. We fought for justice. Or we fought just to stay alive. And we always won.Our definitive male archetype in these mythic stories was rugged, brave, independent, and honorable. John Wayne, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery.Baby Boomer female archetypes were smart, pretty, and strong; Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews, Sophia Loren.Lots of movies ended with a wedding. These societal forces shaped the birth cohort known as the Baby Boomers.Gen-X was shaped by an entirely different set of icons, myths, and archetypes.Millennials had icons, myths, and archetypes that were all their own, as well. The Gen-Z cohort believes it is their responsibility to straighten out everything that the Boomers and X-ers screwed up.Gen-Alpha is determined to make their own decisions and decide for themselves what they want to do. They will be the vanguard of the next “Me” generation.Fortunately, there are elemental beliefs that bind us all together. It is upon those beliefs that successful customer-bonding ad campaigns are built. Openly name these beliefs and they lose their magic. If you claim to possess them, no one will believe you.EXAMPLES: Never claim to be honest. Just say something that only an honest person would say. Never claim to be a perfectionist. Just do something that only a perfectionist would do. Don't tell people that you are an author or a podcaster. Just give them a copy of your book. Invite them to be on your podcast. If you would win the hearts and minds of tomorrow's customers, this is what you must do:Imagine that you are standing face-to-face with three perfect customers and they are each looking into your eyes. The first one says, “Talk is cheap. Don't tell me what you believe. Show me.”The second customer says, “Tell me a true story that lets me know who you really are, including the price that you pay for being you.”Customer three says, “If you betray me after I have given you my trust, I will burn you down so hot that grass won't grow for 100 years.”Now you understand cancel culture. Frustration created it, and social media fuels it.People are looking for someone who really is...

Join Dan and Tom as they decode the 1965 spy movie, OPERATION CROSSBOW. Find out if this spy movie, based on a real World War II operation, is worth watching. This movie, which stars George Peppard, Sophia Loren, Trevor Howard, and more tells us the story of the real-life Operation Crossbow operation from World War II.  This operation was created to try to stall or eliminate Germany's efforts to create the V-1 and V-2 missiles. So, this movie is part a war movie and part a spy movie.  Does that work?  Some of the things we cover in our look at OPERATION CROSSBOW include: ·         The cast – does it work? ·         A couple of nice cameo appearances ·         What is the marketing gimmick that was used to promote this movie? ·         What title did it get in the U.S.A and why? ·         Is the cinematography picture perfect? ·         And is the soundtrack music to your ears? ·         Does Richard Johnson's portral of Winston Churchill work? ·         Also, what are some of the corellations between what we see in OPERATION CROSSBOW and what is happening in the world today? ·         Did you know about the test pilots for the pilotless rockets? ·         How was the balance of “spy movie” vs. “war movie”? ·         Do Dan and Tom think this spy movie is worth watching? ·         And of course, there are more. So take a listen to hear what works and what doesn't work in this movie. Tell us what you think about our decoding of OPERATION CROSSBOW? The Pierre Hotel Affair: How Eight Gentleman Thieves Orchestrated the Largest Jewel Heist in HistoryNew York City, 1972: Bobby Comfort and Sammy "the Arab" Nalo were highly skilled jewel thieves who specialized in robbing luxury Manhattan hotels. (They once robbed Sophia Loren's suite, relieving the Italian actress of over $1 million in gems.) With the blessing of the Lucchese crime family, their next plot targeted the posh Pierre Hotel - host to kings and queens, presidents and aldermen, and the wealthiest of the wealthy. Attired in tuxedos and driven in a limousine, this band of thieves arrived at the Pierre and with perfect timing, they seized the security guards and, in systematically choreographed moves, they swiftly took the night staff - and several unfortunate guests who happened to be roaming around the lobby - as hostages. The deposit boxes inside the vault chamber were plundered and, after the intruders held the Pierre under siege for almost two hours, the gentlemanly thieves departed in their limousine with a haul of $28 million. But then matters began to deteriorate. Comfort, Nalo, and their partners began to double and triple cross one another - two absconding to Europe with the bulk of the booty while three were murdered by their former associates.https://amzn.to/3JiXTGWBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

In this episode of Wisdom from the Wardrobe, the team kicks things off with a stylish stroll through the latest fashion headlines. First up: Anna Wintour announced her stepping down as Editor-in-Chief of Vogue on a random Thursday, that news had the fashion world buzzing. Then there's was that not-so-subtle spectacle that was the Bezos wedding in Venice. While the event itself was dripping in star power and staggering expense, it was the bride's dress that really stole the spotlight—and not necessarily in a good way. Aiming for Sophia Loren glam but landing somewhere between Dynasty cosplay and 1980s prom queen, it left the internet divided and our fashion senses tingling. But once the veil lifts, it's time to bare legs and bold opinions in our main topic: shorts in the workplace. Are they a sign of modern dress code evolution or a professional misstep? Can you channel Tom Browne tailoring without looking like you wandered in from a school drop-off? From inseams to office norms, the team debates the do's and beware of workplace shorts, how to style them with intention, and how to decode your company culture before letting your knees do the talking. As always, expect laughs, side-eye-worthy examples, and practical tips on how to stay stylish (and employed) when the temperatures rise. Spoiler: It's not just about shorts; it's about the strategy. Whether you are team trouser or pro-pedal pusher, this episode is a must-listen for anyone trying to beat the heat without breaking the unspoken office style rules. Happy Listening!

'tis but a scratch: fact and fiction about the Middle Ages

Send us a textIn this episode I interview Professor Nora Berend of the University of Cambridge about her new book El Cid; The Life and Afterlife of a Medieval Mercenary (Pegasus Books, 2025). We discuss how the historical Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, a ruthless and ambitious mercenary who served both Christian and Muslim rulers in the violent and chaotic political world of late eleventh-century Iberia was transformed into the national hero of Francoist Spain and the hero of the 1961 movie starring Charlton Heston. This episode includes the audio track from the theatrical trailer to the 1961 movie "El Cid", starring Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren, and directed by Anthony MannListen on Podurama https://podurama.com Intro and exit music are by Alexander NakaradaIf you have questions, feel free to contact me at richard.abels54@gmail.com

Welcome to the At The Flicks archive. This one is a real blast from the past!  Recently Graham was rummaging around in the At The Flicks vault and fell over some old recording cans that had been left on the floor.  Luckily Graham had been drinking that day, or he might have swerved passed them by and this show would still be sitting there! After swearing and moaning about his now sore leg, Graham checked the cans and realised it was an unreleased edition of our very popular Rediscovering the classic with Elijah series.  It is our discussion about the classic historical epic El Cid (1961). Apart from Jeff and Graham, the team for this episode comprised, of course Elijah, and a voice we miss on the show.  Neil. For those of you not familiar with the film, it stars Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren and is a bio pic about legendary Spanish hero Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (aka El Cid), a knight who lived in the 11th Century.  Normally it is Elijah who is discovering the film for the first time.  Not here, this time it's Jeff and Graham who are seeing it with fresh eyes for the first time (although both have seen it before – don't worry it's all explained in the show). Other things discussed in this podcast: - Why the main stars didn't like each other - What film director Anthony Mann got fired from just before this (and also Jeff initially getting his facts wrong) - Miklos Rozsa's score and the use of trumpets - Herbert Lom not being politically correct  - Correlation to Dune It's fascinating to hear the old team back together again.  Who knows, there may be more life in rediscovering the classics to come. Until then bye for now and see you At The Flicks.

8 Movies again, annnnnnnd here goes.
1. (Halls of Anger 1970) Calvin Lockhart, a young Jeff Bridges and Janet MacLachlan star in this serious look at racism and teaching. Ed Asner makes yet another appearance too.
2. (Skin Game 1971) Same director here as the first movie. Rockford Files and Iron Eagle star with Mom from Webster in yet another film having a heavy dialogue about racism. This one tries to Trojan horse it in with some comedy, does it work, let's see. Oh look, Ed Asner.
3. (Aaron loves Angela 1975) Where the heck is Ed Asner, sigh. Gordon Parks jr. directs this rad 70's film lookin at young love and race, using Romeo and Juliet as a basic template. Irene Cara is in the house.
4.(Hard Times 1975) Warriors director Walter Hill is here, making a film where James Coburn needs to not gamble so much, damn, There's Charles Bronson and boxing too. Bronson is glowing and so expressive, an amazing on screen presence, NOT. 5. (Special Day 1977) Oh my, Italian cinema can be tricky, at least the 70's Italian films that we have seen which are few, but whoa, tricky is a too nice way of saying there's disgusting treatment of women in these films. This film, though not perfect, is an exception, and with some unexpected queer content. Sophia Loren is here, as well as Marcello Mastroianni (who appears to be in every Italian film ever) oh also the dean from Animal House. Special Day is directed by Ettore Scola. Pretty epic stuff.
6.(Skateboard the movie 1978) Silly, dumb, quickly made cash grab about Skateboarding, that I really like and even own the soundtrack. If you like the subject, and fun B movies, this is a win for me, let us tell you all about it. You might have more fun listening with the commentary track on, which means you'd have to buy it, and if yer that interested, you probably already have it. Teen heart throb Leif Garret is here and is the only one who can't skate great. Here also is Kathleen Lloyd of The Car.
7. (The Outsider 1979) Heavy film here about the troubles. It sure got some great images on film in Northern Ireland. Brits out!
8. (Penitentiary 1979) This is final film of rad director Jamaa Fanaka that we get to review. Here Sweet Pea tries to survive prison. Please see also Emma Mae 1976.
ok enjoy the show, thanks for listening.
