Which is now I guess.* We talked about the “budding winter,” which started strong in November, but has kept banging away to be one of the best ski seasons in recent New England history.* We discuss since-resolved drama at Black Mountain around a withheld liquor license for the mid-mountain champagne shack.* Sutner didn't get this wrong – he was prescient, however, in saying Pacific Group Resorts would do something “big” after selling Ragged – the company purchased Silver Star, British Columbia shortly after we spoke:Then there were these:* I didn't really understand the point of Hermon Mountain, but between recording and releasing this episode, I was able to visit it. Stand by for that write-up, which helped me understand it as a teen holding pen for Bangor Maine.* I said that Pacific Group Resorts “may have” purchased Powderhorn after its Flat Top Flyer high-speed quad installation – that is the case; the lift arrived in 2015, and PGR bought the ski area in 2018.* Sure enough, Burke joined the Berkshire Summit Pass - a season pass for sister resorts Berkshire East and Catamount, as well as Bousquet. Nacido en una familia de clase alta, pasó su infancia en un castillo de Baviera que pertenecía a un médico de ascendencia judía que era amante de su madre. Eso terminó moldeando su carácter y le dio una visión del mundo a medio camino entre el romanticismo pangermánico del siglo XIX y el ferviente nacionalismo de posguerra. En la primera guerra Mundial se convirtió en uno de los primeros héroes de la aviación, pero la paz le dejó sin empleo ya que en Versalles los aliados impusieron a la Alemania disponer de fuerza aérea. Eso alimentó un profundo resentimiento hacia la República de Weimar, lo que lo llevaría a unirse al partido nazi tan pronto como en 1922. Para Hitler alguien como Göring era extremadamente útil. Era, aparte de un héroe de guerra, alguien de clase alta bien educado que tenía acceso a los salones de la alta burguesía y la aristocracia. Organizó las SA y participó en el fallido Putsch de 1923, del que consiguió salir con vida pero con dos heridas que le convirtieron en un adicto a la morfina de por vida. Con la llegada de los nazis al poder en 1933, fue acumulando cargos y dignidades, entre ellos el de presidente de Prusia, ministro del aire, ministro de economía y mariscal del Reich. Fue él quien creo la Gestapo y abrió los primeros campos de concentración. En el ámbito económico dirigió el plan cuatrienal para preparar a Alemania para la guerra. Como jefe de la Luftwaffe, cosechó algunos éxitos muy sonados en Polonia y Francia, pero fracasó estrepitosamente en la Batalla de Inglaterra y en el socorro a Stalingrado. Esto último terminó por dinamitar su prestigio. En paralelo llevaba una vida de máximo lujo en el palacete que se hizo construir a las afueras de Berlín, el Carinhall, donde reunió una ingente colección de arte, en su mayor parte fruto del expolio a las familias judías y a los países ocupados durante la guerra. Pese a que se esforzó en proyectar de cara al exterior una imagen de distinción y cierta moderación, fue él quien autorizó "Solución Final". En 1945, tras intentar suceder a Hitler cuando éste se encontraba en el búnker, fue arrestado por los aliados y juzgado en Núremberg. Allí, pese a demostrar una inteligencia excepcional y desafiar abiertamente al tribunal, fue condenado a muerte por crímenes contra la humanidad. La absorción de una joven startup de inteligencia artificial por parte de una consolidada empresa aeroespacial busca crear un gigante tecnológico capaz de dominar tanto el hardware como el software del futuro, con la idea de replicar el modelo de control total que Apple ejerce sobre el iPhone. A pesar de que xAI apenas tiene dos años de vida, su chatbot Grok ya compite con gigantes como ChatGPT de OpenAI y Gemini de Google. Pero el sector de la inteligencia artificial exige inversiones astronómicas en semiconductores, centros de datos y personal muy cualificado para el desarrollo. Al fusionarla con SpaceX, Musk aprovecha la infraestructura y la solidez financiera de su empresa de cohetes, que, por lo demás, ya era cliente de xAI para optimizar el servicio de atención al cliente de Starlink. Hispanoamérica se encuentra en estos momentos inmersa en un cambio de ciclo político marcado por un desplazamiento del electorado hacia la derecha. Este fenómeno, todo un "pendulazo" conservador, tuvo su punto de partida simbólico con la llegada de Javier Milei a la presidencia de Argentina a finales de 2023. Desde entonces, esta región ha encadenado una serie de victorias de candidatos de derechas que prometen orden, seguridad y más libertad económica. Sus nombres se han ido acumulando en los últimos dos años: Daniel Noboa en Ecuador, Rodrigo Paz en Bolivia tras dos décadas de dominio del MAS, José Antonio Kast en Chile, Nasry Asfura en Honduras y, hace solo unos días, Laura Fernández en Costa Rica. Este vuelco político responde a un cansancio generalizado hacia la clase política y a problemas estructurales que los gobiernos de izquierda que han sido saliendo no lograron resolver. Los ciudadanos han utilizado las urnas para castigar el deterioro de la seguridad, impulsado por el narcotráfico y la violencia de las pandillas, así como el estancamiento económico y una inflación que en algunos países no da tregua. Además, el colapso de la Venezuela chavista, que fue el referente durante veinte años, ha erosionado el atractivo de las ideas de izquierda. En este escenario la propuesta de "mano dura" contra el crimen y la reducción del aparato estatal ha encontrado un terreno fértil. Un factor determinante en este nuevo mapa político es la influencia de Donald Trump desde la Casa Blanca. El gobierno estadounidense está ejerciendo una notable presión diplomática y financiera, premia a los Gobiernos alineados con sus intereses y presiona a aquellos que mantienen relaciones estrechas con China. Presidentes como Bukele, Milei y Noboa han capitalizado su sintonía con el trumpismo. Además, la reciente caída de Maduro en Venezuela ha reforzado la percepción de que Estados Unidos está dispuesto a intervenir de forma directa o indirecta para recuperar su influencia histórica en el continente. Pero esta alineación ideológica tiene un límite infranqueable: la dependencia económica de China. A diferencia de lo que ocurría en el siglo XX, Estados Unidos ya no es el socio comercial dominante para gran parte de Sudamérica. Países como Brasil y Chile exportan mucho más a China que a EEUU, algo que ni los presidentes más alineados con el trumpismo pueden ignorar sin arriesgarse a un suicidio económico. Incluso figuras como Milei, a pesar de que se prodiga en buenos gestos hacia Trump, sabe que necesita estar a buenas con los chinos si quiere que sus políticas de apertura económica den los frutos esperados. De este modo, aunque Hispanoamérica parece decidida a adoptar modelos de derecha en otros ámbitos, en el de la economía seguirá vinculada a China. El éxito de esta nueva ola conservadora dependerá de su capacidad para ofrecer resultados tangibles en seguridad y empleo. Si estos gobiernos lo consiguen el ciclo podría durar muchos años; de lo contrario, la región seguirá atrapada en el vaivén político que la ha caracterizado durante el último siglo. El pasado viernes el departamento de Justicia liberó el segundo y definitivo lote de documentos relacionados con el caso de Jeffrey Epstein. El primero de ellos vio la luz en diciembre y este era muy esperado. En total se han liberado más de tres millones de páginas en las que también hay miles de vídeos y fotografías. Esto ofrece una perspectiva mucho más detallada de la vida de Epstein y de las privilegiadas relaciones que cultivó en vida. Eso sí, como sucedió hace algo más de un mes, esta nueva documentación también está plagada de tachaduras que el Gobierno justifica para proteger el anonimato de las víctimas. El fiscal general adjunto, Todd Blanche, ha defendido la integridad de todo el proceso. En una rueda de prensa que concedió nada más hacerse públicos los documentos aseguró que se había cumplido estrictamente con la ley y que no se estaba protegiendo a nadie, tampoco al presidente. Pero, como era de esperar, las críticas no han tardado en arreciar. Unos creen que las ediciones sobre los textos y las imágenes son demasiado agresivas y ocultan importante material que debería ser público. Otros denuncian que se ha revelado indebidamente la identidad de al menos 43 víctimas. El abogado de estas últimas, Brad Edwards, ha señalado que el departamento de Justicia conocía estos nombres de antemano, lo que podría acarrear consecuencias negativas para quienes deseaban mantener su anonimato. Entre los nombres que han vuelto al primer plano destaca el de Donald Trump. Los archivos contienen miles de menciones al actual presidente, algo que tampoco es extraño ya que es del conocimiento público que Epstein y Trump fueron amigos en los años 90. Aunque Trump insiste en que cortó toda la relación con Epstein antes de su primer arresto, la publicación de correos de Melania Trump elogiando a Ghislaine Maxwell y registros de vuelos antiguos mantienen la mirada fija sobre el inquilino de la Casa Blanca. Hasta el momento no hay pruebas de que el presidente participase en delitos sexuales. De hecho, él mismo se ha apresurado a recordar que estos documentos le absuelven de cualquier sospecha. El mundo empresarial también se ha visto salpicado. Los documentos revelan correos electrónicos con Elon Musk en los que ambos coordinaban posibles visitas a la isla de Epstein entre 2012 y 2014. Musk ha negado rotundamente haber asistido a ninguna de sus fiestas. Por su parte, Bill Gates aparece mencionado en correos donde Epstein aludía a sus problemas matrimoniales. Richard Branson, fundador de Virgin, y Serguéi Brin, fundador de Google, también aparecen en la documentación, en ambos casos por relaciones personales o de trabajo en el pasado. Brin, por ejemplo, recibió asesoría fiscal de Epstein hace casi 20 años. Por último, el caso del ex príncipe Andrés de Inglaterra continúa empeorando. En el nuevo lote de documentos aparecen fotografías suyas con una joven tendida en el suelo y la prueba de que invitó a Epstein al Palacio de Buckingham en 2010. A medida que se analizan estos millones de páginas, queda claro que, aunque la presencia en los archivos no implica necesariamente la comisión de un delito, la sombra de Epstein sigue generando una profunda incomodidad en las esferas más influyentes del poder político y económico mundial. La cancelación de las jornadas “1936: la guerra que todos perdimos” en Sevilla ha reabierto un debate que los españoles parecemos incapaces de cerrar. Lo que debía haber sido un encuentro intelectual coordinado por Arturo Pérez-Reverte, ha terminado en polémica tras la renuncia del escritor David Uclés. Decidió darse de baja del evento por la presencia en el mismo de José María Aznar e Iván Espinosa de los Monteros. Uclés considera que no es cierto que la guerra la perdiésemos todos, de hecho el se tiene entre los perdedores. El hecho es que hay un realidad biológica ineludible: la Guerra Civil es ya pasado absoluto. No hay un solo español vivo que combatiese en la guerra. Los soldados más jóvenes, los de la llamada, “quinta del biberón”, hoy tendrían más de 105 años y sólo quedan unas 500 personas en España que superen esa edad, casi todas mujeres que no combatieron. Ya no queda apenas memoria viva, por lo que las causas, el desarrollo y las consecuencias de la guerra son ya trabajo de los historiadores. Pero la política y el activismo que la sirve insiste en resucitar dos bandos enfrentados en un país que, por lo demás, es muy distinto al de los años 30. La España de 1936 era un país menos poblado, mucho más joven, pobre y rural. Uno cada tres ciudadanos era analfabeto y la esperanza de vida rozaba los 50 años. La España de aquella época nos es muy extraña y difícilmente la reconoceríamos. Intentar traérsela al presente es un anacronismo que sólo sirve a quienes viven de la discordia y el enfrentamiento para obtener réditos políticos y, en demasiadas ocasiones, también económicos. Pero eso no puede cambiar lo esencial: los españoles de hoy no somos responsables de lo que hicieron nuestros antepasados. Ni ganamos ni perdimos en 1936, del mismo modo que ni conquistamos América ni luchamos en Lepanto. Heredamos los genes y parte de la cultura de nuestros ancestros, pero no la culpa de lo que hicieron. Revivir la guerra en términos de victoria o derrota solo sirve a quienes buscan hacerse con el poder (o retenerlo) agitando heridas que los propios protagonistas, en un ejercicio de generosidad, decidieron cerrar hace ya muchos años.
