Today, we investigate the intersection of the energy transition, critical minerals and defense. As with commodities, warfare is also going through rapid and profound change, with the electrification of defense over the last 20 year. Batteries proliferate the battlefield and the energy transition is impacting national security. We are seeing the shift from capital assets to small, cheap weapons such as drones that can have profound impacts. This poses a particular problem for the US, where energy dominance has been based in hydrocarbons along with their warfare fighting capabilities. Now in an electrified battlefront, supply chains that support them sit in China, threatening the West's defence capabilities. Our guest is Joe Bryan, principal at Muswell Orange, a boutique consulting firm, focused on energy and particularly its intersection with national security. Before his return to the private sector, Joe was a senior advisor to the Secretary of Defense and was the Department sector, of Defense Chief Sustainability Officer. He previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Navy for Energy, where he was responsible for policies relating to the Department's installation and operational energy programs. Earlier in his career, Joe led investigations for the Senate Armed Services Committee and served on both Senate's Select Committee on Intelligence and the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. He has consulted on energy policy around the world and began his Investigations. He has consulted on energy policy around the world and began his career working on electricity restructuring and state level policies to encourage growth of clean energy markets.

He also talks about the three projects that are currently underway at the center which include an EV case study, development of a new type of motor and 3D printing of EV parts. He also shares his views on autonomous trucks including why he thinks there will always need to be a human in the cab.
“Fleet isn't just turning wrenches anymore—it's strategic asset management, customer service, data science, and culture building. And it deserves that respect.” – Clinton Bench, UCLA Episode SummaryIn this episode of The Fleet Success Show, host Marc Canton sits down with Clinton Bench, Director of Fleet and Transit at UCLA, for a thought-provoking discussion on the evolving role of fleet managers in higher education.Clinton opens up about the operational and cultural transformations happening within UCLA's fleet operation—including their journey to electrification, the role of microgrids and dynamic wireless charging, and the importance of centralization in a historically decentralized university system. This episode is a masterclass in leading change from within, using data, partnerships, and perseverance to shift paradigms in the public sector. From overcoming EV charging infrastructure challenges to creating intentional development paths for team members, this conversation delivers a rare behind-the-scenes view into a cutting-edge government fleet that's building for the future. Key TakeawaysCentralization is key in large, decentralized institutions. Fleet operations thrive when given control over acquisition, maintenance, and remarketing.Fleet professionals are service providers, and success depends on building internal trust and aligning fleet goals with stakeholder needs.UCLA is a national leader in EV transition, with 40% of the fleet now electric, and an innovative microgrid project tied to a hydrogen fuel cell.Data is essential: Smart use of FMIS and telematics enables predictive maintenance, utilization tracking, and customer service improvements.Culture matters: Staff development, continuous learning, and embracing change are just as critical as technical skills. It's January 20th, 2025. Donald Trump's second term as president. He signs a slew of executive orders, including one called “Unleashing American Energy.”This order rolled back about a dozen climate change initiatives enacted by Joe Biden's administration in 2021. Clean energy funding and programs set by 2022's Inflation Reduction Act…were now halted. Also hanging in the balance is the Department of Energy's projects. That includes the one we visited in Menifee during a previous episode, and two other programs we'll explore in this episode. How do they work? Why is their role in the energy transition so important? This week the Unnamed Automotive Podcast tackles a pair of vehicles that haven't been discussed in over two years! First Sami reviews the 2025 Ford Explorer ST, which packs plenty of power with its three row setup. While Sami claims that's a good trick to help the Ford overcome its rivals, Benjamin argues that addition is not relevant enough or useful to shoppers. After that hot debate, Benjamin shares his thoughts on the 2025 Genesis electrified G80, a much loved executive sport sedan that made the transition to electron operated propulsion. That change comes with a few compromises as Benjamin notes, but do they tarnish the overall experience? Then the guys return to the Fiat 500e, where one of our listeners describe their use case scenario for the small EV and how it works in a completely different market.

Born in Guatemala but active in Mexico City's bustling music scene, cellist, electronic music producer, and singer Mabe Fratti has been making music for several years that could lean toward the experimental and the avant-garde on the one hand, and what seems to be a flair for pop melodies on the other. She writes songs that encompass chamber music, electronic music, soundscapes, and hard rock, -perhaps with jazz overtones- without ever settling into any one of them. Fratti and her collaborators have such talent for risk-taking, for playfulness with sound and its manipulation, and for endless riffs - whether cello (amplified and with pedals) or vocal processors, and artfully using feedback, field recordings, and loops. Her latest album is called Sentir que no Sabes, or Feel like you don't know. Mabe Fratti and her trio play some of these songs in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Quieras o No 2. Kravitz 3. Oidos

Guest: RJ Scaringe, CEO and Founder of Rivian“I'm very comfortable with things not being in their end state,” says Rivian CEO and founder RJ Scaringe. The company's challenging mission — to help make 100% of the world's cars electric — will take a long time, and a lot of willingness to build the metaphorical plane in midair. As Rivian has grown from one person to seven to 17,000, though, RJ admits that there's a lot more pressure to not screw up. “There's all these conflicting emotions I had ... is this the right product?” he recalls. “Is it the right strategy? Am I capable of doing this? But at the end of the day, I try really hard not to let that be overly distracting.”Chapters:(01:58) - Starting from scratch (05:35) - Auto tech innovation (08:03) - The supply chain (09:52) - Rivian's deal with Volkswagen (14:28) - Outsourcing (16:10) - Capable EVs (19:06) - Brand and customer satisfaction (21:05) - That nagging feeling (27:26) - Raising capital (31:31) - RJ's father (32:35) - The dark side of cars (34:43) - Tesla's influence (37:13) - Financial challenges (42:38) - Entrepreneurial mindset (44:59) - Hard decisions (46:46) - Don't screw this up (49:56) - 25,000 decisions a day (52:16) - Daily routines (54:57) - Who Rivian is hiring (55:34) - What “grit” means to RJ Mentioned in this episode: Porsche, Alex Honnold, Amazon AWS, Mercedes, Elon Musk, Lotus, U.S. News and World Report, MotorTrend, J.D. Volvos XC90 might be getting long in the tooth, with its current generation debuting almost a decade ago, but its plug-in hybrid Recharge variant leans into the current electrified discussion. This potent PHEV takes the reserved styling of the family-hauling XC90 and stuffs the Volvo plug-in hybrid powertrain under the skin. This system blends a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 with electric motors to send a combined 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque to the wheels. On the newer end of the spectrum, the smaller Genesis GV60 eschews the gasoline engine and relies solely on electric motors for motivation. This battery-electric crossover packs a 77.4 kWh battery to feed two motors in the Performance AWD trim. This all-wheel-drive performance trim sends 429 hp, or 483 hp in boost mode, to all four wheels. The downside to this power is that this BEV can only travel 235 miles per charge, per Genesis. On this episode of Talking Cars with the Boss, Wesley Wren, and Natalie Neff talk about these modern people movers. Natalie Neff talks about her time with this battery-electric Genesis and this plug-in hybrid Volvo. The pair talk about the benefits and drawbacks of each powertrain. The pair also discuss which one of these machines they'd throw onto their driveway.
The all-new 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV and the recently renewed 2024 Genesis Electrified GV70 represent two different approaches to solving the electric vehicle puzzle. The Equinox EV is built on the General Motors Ultium dedicated battery-electric vehicle platform, while the Electrified GV70 leverages the conventionally powered GV70 body, chassis, and interior. Each approach has its pluses and minuses, and executives in those two companies to tell you. What our two test vehicles suggest is that the two paths lead to the same destination. Though they are similar in size, the Equinox EV and Electrified GV70 are not head-to-head competitors. As one of the battery-electric touchstones of GM's lowest-priced brand, the Equinox EV has been touted as a vehicle that will bring affordable electric vehicles to the masses. Co-Host Chris Teague, who road-tested the Equinox EV, and Host Jack Nerad will discuss how well the new Chevy accomplishes that task. The Genesis GV70 has a different mission — to bring electric propulsion to the increasingly popular and increasingly competitive small luxury crossover class. Those woods are currently filling up with EVs, many of them struggling to find willing buyers. Do the GV70's handsome looks and 3.8-second 0-60 acceleration give it the push it needs to break through in the marketplace. Nerad, who road-tested the GV70, and Teague will bat that issue around in this episode. While we are on the subject of luxury vehicles, our special guest this week is Lexus's Cynthia Tenhouse, who serves as vice president of the Lexus Guest Experience. Toyota's luxury marque has proceeded very slowly in introducing battery-electric vehicles to its lineup even as virtually all of its luxury-brand competitors have charged ahead. We'll discuss the brand's wait-and-see strategy and many other topics with her in a wide-ranging discussion about the current state of the luxury vehicle market. You'll want to hear what she has to say. In the news, two prominent American electric carmakers are in the midst of a dust-up in court. We'll tell you who Tesla's Elon Musk is suing and what's likely to happen next. Beyond that court battle, Musk also angling to become a strong competitor to Waymo in the robotaxi wars that are set to develop in several cities around the country in the coming months. And Waymo is taking a special jab at Tesla as just one skirmish in what promises to be an epic battle. A new survey reveals that enthusiasm for driving and collector cars isn't dying, as some would have you believe. Instead, the Hagerty-sponsored survey reveals that Americans' love for automobiles remains strong across several generations. There is also tragedy in Chicago, as an iconic vehicle is involved in a major crash. We'll have the details on that and so much more in this episode of America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

In October 2023, the European Union launched an investigation into whether Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers were receiving unfair subsidies which give them an advantage in the market. In June 2024, the European Commission announced the preliminary conclusion that it would levy additional tariffs of between 17.4ؘ–38% on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). This would be placed on top of an existing 10% import duty. These duties are set to provisionally come into effect in early July, with a proposal for permanent measures expected in November, subject to a decisive vote. In this episode of The Sound of Economics, Yuyun Zhan sits down with Alicia García-Herrero and George Magnus to discuss the EV investigation, the impact of China's industrial policy on its mass-production growth model, why this approach is now facing resistance, and the broader implications of China's overcapacity for the EU and the global market.
