Tras once años de proceso condenaron a 28 años de cárcel a dos empresarios madereros por el asesinato en 2014 de cuatro líderes indígenas ambientalistas, que habían sido amenazados por defender el bosque. RFI habló con el abogado de los familiares de las víctimas. La justicia ha confirmado la condena de 28 años de prisión y una reparación civil de 100.000 soles (unos 28.000 dólares) contra los responsables del asesinato de cuatro líderes indígenas en la comunidad de Saweto. Felipe Tapia, abogado de las viudas de las víctimas, celebró la decisión, destacando la importancia de esta confirmación judicial para la defensa de los derechos territoriales de los pueblos amazónicos. Si bien la defensa había solicitado penas más elevadas, llegando a un máximo de 35 años y una reparación civil de 250.000 soles, Tapia enfatizó a RFI que lo esencial y más importante ha sido la ratificación de la condena. "Estamos satisfechos porque lo que buscábamos era que la justicia alcanzara a las viudas de los líderes indígenas asesinados", afirmó Tapia, señalando que, a pesar de no lograr las penas máximas debido a criterios legales, la sentencia es "contundente" por su alta cuantía. La confirmación de esta sentencia de segunda instancia no solo hace justicia en el caso Saweto, también marca un precedente en un país donde los pueblos indígenas siguen siendo amenazados por actividades ilegales en sus territorios. El caso Saweto es paradigmático: se trata de uno de los primeros casos en que líderes indígenas son asesinados por defender sus tierras. Felipe Tapia subrayó la gravedad de la situación actual en Perú, donde los territorios indígenas son sistemáticamente invadidos por la tala y minería ilegal, e incluso por el narcotráfico. "Uno de los objetivos de obtener justicia a través de una sentencia condenatoria era establecer un precedente", explicó el abogado. “Esto genera un precedente en el sentido de que cualquier actividad ilegal que se realice atropellando, vulnerando los derechos indígenas, especialmente el territorio, tiene una sanción que debe ser claramente establecida. En este caso, sobre todo la violencia, la amenaza que se ha ejercido contra los líderes indígenas y que se viene ejerciendo todavía tiene que ser sancionada y tiene que ser reprimida con mucha severidad”, puntualizó.   Caso Saweto Edwin Chota Valera, Leoncio Quintísima Meléndez, Jorge Ríos Pérez y Francisco Pinedo Ramírez fueron asesinados el 1 septiembre de 2014, en medio de amenazas por oponerse a la tala de árboles ilegal en la región de Ucayali, en el este peruano, donde se encuentra la comunidad nativa Alto Tamaya-Saweto, a la que pertenecían. Los victimarios son cinco madereros ilegales: los hermanos Josimar y Segundo Atachi, José Estrada, Hugo Soria y Euricio Mapes. Ninguno de ellos acudió a la lectura del fallo y Mapes fue declarado reo contumaz por no asistir a las audiencias.

Nicolás Tapia is the chef and owner of the restaurant Yum Cha in Santiago, Chile. Nicolás talks about how he became interested in tea during a trip to China and during a family style meal where everyone was drinking tea he was reminded of the Chilean concept of once, the evening tea and meal. That's when the idea was planted in his head to create a restaurant where food and tea could be paired together, combining his cooking experience, Chilean ingredients and the influences from China and elsewhere in Asia where he continues to explore regularly.I mention this in the conversation, but when I first heard about Yum Cha I questioned whether it was going to work. A tasting menu with Asian techniques, Chilean ingredients and a tea pairing? It's a risk. Even though there is a ton of tea consumed in Chile, more than anywhere else in Latin America per capita and even more than in China and Japan. Then I went and I was like, alright, he knows what he's doing. It comes through in the interview. I think it's a good example of someone following their curiosities to another part of the world with an open mind and doing something interesting with it what they learned, and continuing to learn, engage and create something new. I highly recommend a meal there if you are in Santiago. Or stop by the tea house he is about to open. Nicolás did the interview from a hotel room in La Paz, Bolivia, where he was doing an event later that week with the restaurant Phayawi, which I haven't been to but I've heard great things. I got hip to Cristobal's work thanks to my recent TV addiction.  I inhaled all 3 seasons of the white lotus and I think I was only able to get so greedy because of the EXCELLENT music.  I usually get repelled by TV scores tnh. I feel like I know the tricks and the tones and the emotional devices and I end up paying attention to them in a bad way. My agitation stops me from getting swept up and carried away. Not so with this man's work.  I just felt like it was so deeply connected to the lands and the mystery and power of our animalistic shadows that ride in the narrative. I was taken aback and taken away.  It's been a long time since I found myself loving a soundtrack. I had to know more and thankfully Cristobal (I butcher his name in the pod btw to my shame!) has been fantastic to chat with. I reached out, we set a date to chat and it just flowed. I love that.  Hope you enjoy the fascinating insights he shares. He's so humble about his ways but he clearly is no pushover, knowing what he believes in and fighting for that.  I loved this hang.
