The Compendium Podcast: An Assembly of Fascinating and Intriguing Things
In this episode of The Compendium, I tell Adam the horrifying yet intriguing case of the Pizza Bomber Heist. On August 28, 2003, Brian Wells, a pizza delivery driver in Erie, Pennsylvania, was coerced into robbing a PNC Bank with a bomb locked around his neck as part of a horifying life or death scavenger hunt. This shocking event led investigators into a labyrinth of conspiracies involving Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong and Bill Rothstein. The case, often likened to a real-life "Saw" movie, remains one of the most intricate in FBI history. MM's telling a story that is full of way too many twists and turns to be contained in one episode: the 2003 murder of Brian Wells, which included a collar bomb, a bank heist, and lots of evil masterminding from Marjorie Diehl Armstrong. Also included, a BTS/Ginger Demon update. MM texting Katy about booby traps prompts no context questions or follow-ups. Authorities go on the worst scavenger hunt ever. All important and sex-related contact info should go in a Lisa Frank address book. Werewolves are not Katy's brand. Keep your ears... peeled(?)... for cameos from both PA Moxie and PA Oliver Queen. Happy New Year, peeps and creeps! We are back this week with part 1 of the Collar Bomb Heist. On August 28, 2003 in Erie, PA, Brian Wells robbed a PNC bank for somewhere around $9,000, much less than the $250k he was trying to get. He was arrested nearby shortly after the robbery, and police discovered he had a bomb locked around his neck.Brian told police that a group of black men had grabbed him while he’d been out on a pizza delivery, chained the bomb around his neck at gunpoint, and forced him to rob the bank. The bomb went off, killing Brian Wells, before the bomb squad could even arrive. After his death, police found notes in his car, detailing a scavenger hunt he was to go on after he’d gotten the money that would lead him to all the keys and codes necessary to unlock the collar, and the police were left with so many questions. Who was the mastermind behind the twisted plot to rob the PNC bank, what was the point of the scavenger hunt, and just how innocent was Brian Wells? Brian Wells, a local pizza delivery man, held up a PNC Bank with a bomb collar around his neck and a cane gun. He had two pages of elaborate handwritten instructions - a detailed scavenger hunt - leading him from place to place, both to steal $250, 000 and pick up new instructions, with the promise of freedom if he completes the tasks in time. Having left the bank he was stopped by police in a parking lot. Having cuffed him and sat him on the ground some 25 minutes later, the bomb starts to beep. The beeping escalated until the moment it exploded, killing Brian Wells. The bomb squad arrived too late. Was he part of this elaborate plan to rob the bank or a victim exploited and manipulated by others?
