It would appear there is a contradiction in the Bible since in one passage it says to be still and God will fight for us, but then there is another passage where we are told to put on the “Armor of God.” So, which is true? Are we to be silent and still and let God do the work? Or are we to put on our armor and go to war? Is this truly a contradiction? Today, we find Jesus standing before the Jewish leaders in what appears to be a trial as He defends Himself against their claims of breaking the Sabbath and committing blasphemy. As with their traditions concerning the Law, and as we can see is recorded in Deuteronomy, a legal case must have at least two to three witnesses present during a trial. Jesus supplies five. Was Jesus incorrect when He was sharing the Parable of the Mustard Seed that is recorded in Matthew 13:31-32? He claims that the mustard seed is the smallest of all the seeds and that it will grow into a tree that is larger than all the plants. But though the seed is indeed quite small, it will only grow to a tree about eight feet tall. Is this an error in the Bible? Or is there a reasonable explanation as to why Jesus said this? After making a couple of period pieces, Jane Campion took a massive left turn, and went to make the riskiest film of her career, a modern, psychological, sexual thriller about a English teacher that gets involved in a personal entanglement with a shady police detective who is solving the grisly murders of young women. The film was a departure for not only the director, but the film's star, and a signature "America's sweetheart" Meg Ryan, and given its mixed reception and under performance at the box office, was deemed a flop. But time also shines brightest on the bold, as In the Cut has become a cut classic, as well as a vital look at the city of New York post September 11th; it's visually also unlike anything Campions ever done with two maximalist, brilliant performances from Meg Ryan and Mark Ruffalo. Ryan, Jay, and Cody break down their thoughts on the film, Meg Ryan's persona as an actress, the differences in the two cuts of the film, how wild this movie was for the time, how sex is weaponized throughout the plot, and why this works now but didn't in 2003. It's the strangest films in Campion's filmography, as it has the hallmarks of her previous three films, and plenty of style and flare that she's become known for after breaking out with The Piano. But unlike adapting Janet Frame's work for An Angel at My Table, the guys felt there isn't much personal connection with this material, and therefore, Campion's film is rather distant and uninspired, with a central performance from its lead actress that leaves a lot to be desired. Ryan and Jay break down their thoughts on the film, what makes a good period piece adaptation, the films and novels they thought about while watching The Portrait of a Lady, why Kidman is not right for this role, how great Barbara Hershey and John Malkovich in their villainous roles, how Mary-Louise Parker gives maybe one of the worst performances ever put to screen, and just how stupid Tom Brady is. Jesus was not just a wise teacher or a prophet, He was, and is, the Son of God. In today's passage we see Jesus defending this claim. His equality with God is equal in person, works, and even power to raise people from the dead. He can do all things that the Father can do and cannot do what the Father cannot do – sin. God, and therefore Jesus, cannot do anything that would go against their character of being pure and holy. The past few lessons our studies have focused on the story of Jesus healing the lame man on the Sabbath, breaking the man-made laws of the Mishnah. In today's passage, Jesus declares that God is always working and He Himself is God. God never ceases to work – He is constantly sustaining all of Creation. Located in Jerusalem, the Temple Mount resides on what used to be known as Mount Moriah and over the years it has been a place of many historical events. Throughout history it has changed hands many times and today is a place of great importance to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Due to all the history that is stored there, laws were put in place that banned any excavating from taking place at the site. But in 1999, an illegal excavation began which involved the careless removal of piles of dirt from under the Temple Mount. To preserve the relics that were found there, The Temple Mount Sifting Project began. Since then, 85 percent of the debris has been sifted through, though much of it remains to be studied. In an attempt to make his own spy film, Nolan creates an uncompromising, complex, loose thriller about an unnamed secret agent working to take down a rich, Russian billionaire who has discovered objects from the future and brought them to the past to end the world as we know it. Along the way, our Protagonist enlists the help of our villain's wife and a fellow spy (unknowing it's his best bud) and with just the titular word as his guild, doors open to a puzzle he finds himself at the center of. Complicated, confusing, and downright brilliant, Nolan stops explaining everything in this film, instead, opting for the audience to "just feel it" and make a film off good vibes and technical wonder; and doing so, made one of his best films. In the last episode, we studied the findings from a variety of tests that were done on the Shroud of Turin to determine its authenticity. Now today, we challenge it against the most important source, the Word of God. If it does not line up with the Bible, then we know it can not be accurate. And it would appear upon first look of the accounts of the burial of Jesus that there is indeed an error between the four Gospels. But let's see what the original language has to say. On episode 161 of the Director Watch Podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Trace Sauveur to discuss the next film in their Christopher Nolan series, Dunkirk (2017). In doing this, he created an undeniable masterpiece that took away some of his bad habits and makes a lean film that feels like an action set piece all the way through. Ryan, Jay, and Trace break down their thoughts on the film, Hoyte van Hoytema first collaboration with Nolan, each section of the war, how awesome Tom Hardy is in the plane we see in the film, the acting of Harry Styles, the sound work, and Jay's continued quest to remind us all that WWII is still underrated when we talk about important events in the world.
