In this episode of JJ Meets World, JJ and Tucker break down the massive news shaking the entertainment industry: Netflix has announced a planned $72 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. — bringing HBO, DC, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and decades of iconic film and television history under one company. The conversation takes listeners on a nostalgic but deeply analytical journey through the evolution of streaming, starting with Netflix's early days as a DVD-by-mail service, through the death of video stores, the rise of binge-watching, and the explosion of subscription media. JJ and Tucker unpack how Netflix used viewer data and analytics to rewrite Hollywood business models, the dangers of corporate consolidation, and what happens when creators, audiences, and entire libraries become disposable for tax write-offs. They dive deep into: The cancellation and tax write-off of films like Batgirl and Coyote vs. Acme What this merger means for HBO Max, DC films, and Warner franchises Why Netflix owning the Warner Bros studio lot itself is a huge power shift How subscription pricing, data ownership, and media monopolies affect consumers Whether Netflix will enter theme parks, merch, and in-platform commerce next Why Disney, Apple, and Netflix may be on an eventual collision course This episode isn't just about the merger — it's about the future of entertainment, the death of ownership, and the new digital empires replacing Hollywood studios as we once knew them. 00:00 – Netflix Buys Warner Bros: The $72 Billion Shockwave 01:10 – Netflix's DVD-by-Mail Origins & the Death of Video Stores 05:45 – The Birth of Streaming & the Rise of Binge-Watching 09:20 – Netflix's Data Empire & Original Content Strategy 13:30 – The Subscription Economy & Media as a Service 17:00 – HBO, Paramount+, and the Streaming Land Grab 19:00 – Netflix Enters Full-Scale Content Production 22:00 – Theatrical Releases vs Streaming Wars 26:30 – Warner Bros Tax Write-Off Controversies (Batgirl & Coyote vs. Acme) 30:10 – The True Power of Netflix's Subscriber Base 32:30 – Disney, Fox & the MCU Power Expansion 33:00 – Netflix's Official Statement on the Warner Bros Deal 35:00 – Why the Warner Bros Studio Lot Is a Huge Power Move 37:30 – What Happens to HBO Max & Warner Streaming? 39:20 – Netflix Inheriting HBO Television Networks 42:10 – Theme Parks, Licensing & Netflix's Next Frontier 45:15 – In-Platform Shopping, Ads & Media Monetization 46:45 – Could Netflix Merge With Disney or Apple Next? 48:00 – Final Thoughts & The Pillsbury Cinematic Universe For more episodes of JJ Meets World, or to find out how you can support this podcast, visit http://www.jjmeetsworld.com/ Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/jjmeetsworld Merch Shop - https://shop.spreadshirt.com/jj-meets-world Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jj-meets-world/id1367045742 Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/0L9IGvJuUjFK0UOR9AIF5u YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh1WZrpC-XE57mRzi1bzPow Google Play - https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Iwnpufw6f5qromxbbw6pq32rsya Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/jjmeetsworldpodcast/

Ed Lawrence joins James Smith for a brutally honest conversation about the problem with making money online, the illusion of quick success and the hidden grind behind overnight wins. From starting 12 years ago with terrible videos to generating $300,000 from a single YouTube upload, Ed reveals how the "make money online" promise is sold as easy… but requires years of eating shit instead. They discuss the reality of building a business, the trap of chasing views over revenue, the burnout of ad-dependent income and why most people give up right before the breakthrough. Ed opens up about parasites nearly killing his business, the obsession required to succeed and learning to build a sustainable income through content, tracking and understanding what actually converts rather than what goes viral. He explains: ◼️ Why making money online takes 10x longer than you think ◼️ How to escape the 9-5 without going broke ◼️ The trap of building followers who never buy ◼️ Why 800 views can make $33,000 (and millions of views can make nothing) ◼️ How YouTube teaches you every business skill you need Timestamps: 00:00 – The Problem With Making Money Online 02:14 – Why Side Hustles Fail vs Full-Time Focus 05:08 – The Trap of "Free" Gym Memberships 06:33 – The Truth About Business Ownership 08:48 – Don't Start a Business Just for Money 11:05 – Building Followers vs Making Money 13:17 – The Stress of Ad Revenue Dependency 16:38 – YouTube is Not a Search Platform 19:15 – Binge-Watching by Design 24:13 – YouTube Makes You Better at Everything 29:35 – Fail as Fast as You Can 32:56 – Packaging Boring Content 37:13 – Everything Has Been Done Before 41:55 – Copy Your Own Outliers 44:41 – Views Don't Equal Money 49:13 – The 10-Year Overnight Success 53:05 – Getting Stuck in Your Comfort Zone 56:12 – The Parasite Wake-Up Call 59:11 – Is AI the Biggest Opportunity Ever? 1:02:00 – Bitcoin vs Gold vs Traditional Money 1:04:09 – Stop Researching Investments, Build Your Business 1:05:13 – Closing Remarks Welcome to "The Problem With" where each week we look into a problem to get a better understanding of it. Hollywood Swing and Miss. Binge Watching is Good! FOX 11's Matthew Seedorff joins the show to talk: Alleged crime ring uses secret LA County tunnels to hide stolen cars, whistleblower says.
Binge Watching Shows Might Be Good For YouThis sums me up. according to new research from the University of Georgia. It suggests there may be some mental health benefits to binge-watching shows and movies you love. The new study finds that watching episode after episode or having movie marathons or binge-reading books can make it harder for a story to get out of your head. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. It makes us more likely to remember stories, keep engaging them through daydreams and fantasies, and helps us get a bigger picture of the story. Dr. Joshua Baldwin, lead study author and media psychology researcher, says binge-watching helps us build “mental worlds” where stories continue long after the credits roll, which can help us cope in stressful times.Aging With PowerDr. Vonda Wright is hoping to change that. The orthopedic surgeon and longevity specialist wants to level the playing field and bring women into the focus because men and women aren't aging the same way. She wants women to “age with power” and encourages them to build strength and work on disease prevention during their early midlife years, from 35 to 45 years old, which she calls the “critical decade.” To do that, she recommends:Reframe dietary changes that support longevity - Instead of trying to lose weight, focus on maximizing lean muscle and minimizing body fat. The goal isn't to be skinny, but to be lean. Eat one gram of protein per ideal pound a day to support the muscle you're trying to build and cutting back on sugar, which leads to inflammation and can contribute to multiple diseases. When it comes to exercise, she uses the acronym “FACE” your future:F for Flexibility - And joint range of motion. Yoga, pilates, tai chi, and dynamic stretching are great options.A for Aerobic - Getting your heart rate up is good for the ticker, but Wright advises doing lower heart rate exercise, like walking, 80% of the time, and higher intensity workouts 20% of the time.C for Carry a load - Strength and power are the goal, so lifting heavy is the way to go. That means fewer reps with heavier weights.E is for Equilibrium - Being strong and flexible is important as you age, but so is balance so you don't fall and break something. Wright warns that if you trip and end up with what's known as a “fatal fall,” 50% of the time, it lands you in a nursing home.Bad Money Habits To BreakAutopilot Expenses: Automatic renewals sound convenient, but they're also a sneaky way to lose track of your money. That streaming service you haven't watched in months? Still billing you. Using The Same Passwords: Reusing the same password across sites makes it way too easy for scammers to break in and wreak havoc on your finances. A password manager (and a little thing called multifactor authentication) can be your new best friend to keep your money safe.Paying Way Too Much Attention To Your Investments: Not only is it stressful, but it can also lead you to make impulsive, money-losing decisions like selling low when the market dips. A better approach is to zoom out, stay calm, and trust the long-term plan rather than panicking at short-term bumps. Not Looking At Your Investments Is Also Not Great: Markets change, and your mix of stocks and bonds can drift in ways that no longer match your comfort level with risk. A quarterly check-in (or using a financial adviser or app) can make sure your money is working in line with your goals without letting it simmer unattended for years.Chasing Credit Card Promotions: You might end up overspending just to hit the minimum requirement, or dinging your credit score with too many hard inquiries. Unless you're a pro at managing multiple cards, chasing these deals can do more harm than good.Super Penny Pinching: If you're skipping necessary home repairs or living off ramen just to see your savings account grow, you're missing the point. A healthy money mindset means balancing saving with spending on things that truly matter to you.Second Date UpdateCarlos called us about Heather. They met on Hinge and grabbed dinner in Mountain View. Carlos thought it was fun. They had a lot in common. She had a great sense of humor. He can't stand boring. He swore Heather seemed like she was enjoying herself. But after that, she cut him off.
This week, the girlies log on to discuss the strange and somewhat evil journey of content streaming. They track the rise from radio to Napster to Netflix, expose how labels teamed up with platforms to rob artists blind, and unpack how mood playlists and background noise culture encourage you to passively consume your music, not listen to it. They also hear from binchies who have done away with streaming entirely, and talk about hopeful alternatives for finding and interacting with art you love. Digressions include: Matt Rife's new haunting business venture, Katy Perry's stay at the Khia Asylum, and unfortunately, hitting the Sydney Sweeney button.
