Binge Watching Shows Might Be Good For YouThis sums me up. according to new research from the University of Georgia. It suggests there may be some mental health benefits to binge-watching shows and movies you love. The new study finds that watching episode after episode or having movie marathons or binge-reading books can make it harder for a story to get out of your head. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. It makes us more likely to remember stories, keep engaging them through daydreams and fantasies, and helps us get a bigger picture of the story. Dr. Joshua Baldwin, lead study author and media psychology researcher, says binge-watching helps us build “mental worlds” where stories continue long after the credits roll, which can help us cope in stressful times.Aging With PowerDr. Vonda Wright is hoping to change that. The orthopedic surgeon and longevity specialist wants to level the playing field and bring women into the focus because men and women aren't aging the same way. She wants women to “age with power” and encourages them to build strength and work on disease prevention during their early midlife years, from 35 to 45 years old, which she calls the “critical decade.” To do that, she recommends:Reframe dietary changes that support longevity - Instead of trying to lose weight, focus on maximizing lean muscle and minimizing body fat. The goal isn't to be skinny, but to be lean. Eat one gram of protein per ideal pound a day to support the muscle you're trying to build and cutting back on sugar, which leads to inflammation and can contribute to multiple diseases. When it comes to exercise, she uses the acronym “FACE” your future:F for Flexibility - And joint range of motion. Yoga, pilates, tai chi, and dynamic stretching are great options.A for Aerobic - Getting your heart rate up is good for the ticker, but Wright advises doing lower heart rate exercise, like walking, 80% of the time, and higher intensity workouts 20% of the time.C for Carry a load - Strength and power are the goal, so lifting heavy is the way to go. That means fewer reps with heavier weights.E is for Equilibrium - Being strong and flexible is important as you age, but so is balance so you don't fall and break something. Wright warns that if you trip and end up with what's known as a “fatal fall,” 50% of the time, it lands you in a nursing home.Bad Money Habits To BreakAutopilot Expenses: Automatic renewals sound convenient, but they're also a sneaky way to lose track of your money. That streaming service you haven't watched in months? Still billing you. Using The Same Passwords: Reusing the same password across sites makes it way too easy for scammers to break in and wreak havoc on your finances. A password manager (and a little thing called multifactor authentication) can be your new best friend to keep your money safe.Paying Way Too Much Attention To Your Investments: Not only is it stressful, but it can also lead you to make impulsive, money-losing decisions like selling low when the market dips. A better approach is to zoom out, stay calm, and trust the long-term plan rather than panicking at short-term bumps. Not Looking At Your Investments Is Also Not Great: Markets change, and your mix of stocks and bonds can drift in ways that no longer match your comfort level with risk. A quarterly check-in (or using a financial adviser or app) can make sure your money is working in line with your goals without letting it simmer unattended for years.Chasing Credit Card Promotions: You might end up overspending just to hit the minimum requirement, or dinging your credit score with too many hard inquiries. Unless you're a pro at managing multiple cards, chasing these deals can do more harm than good.Super Penny Pinching: If you're skipping necessary home repairs or living off ramen just to see your savings account grow, you're missing the point. A healthy money mindset means balancing saving with spending on things that truly matter to you.Second Date UpdateCarlos called us about Heather. They met on Hinge and grabbed dinner in Mountain View. Carlos thought it was fun. They had a lot in common. She had a great sense of humor. He can't stand boring. He swore Heather seemed like she was enjoying herself. But after that, she cut him off.

They also hear from binchies who have done away with streaming entirely, and talk about hopeful alternatives for finding and interacting with art you love. Digressions include: Matt Rife's new haunting business venture, Katy Perry's stay at the Khia Asylum, and unfortunately, hitting the Sydney Sweeney button.

Can a TV show actually mess with your mental health? And if so… should streaming platforms step in to stop us from binging? In this thought-provoking and emotionally charged episode of The Ben and Skin Show, the crew dives deep into the psychological toll of binge-watching heavy, emotionally intense shows. It all starts when Krystina “Little Baby Cornbread” Ray shares how watching The Handmaid's Tale non-stop left her feeling drained, anxious, and emotionally wrecked—until she skipped a night and suddenly felt like herself again. This sparks a fascinating conversation between Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina about the darker side of streaming culture. Should shows like The Handmaid's Tale come with a binge warning? Should platforms limit how many episodes you can watch in a row? #1559: Expanding Social Dramaturgy of Theater with Video Games in 7-Hour “asses.masses” Binge-Watching Marathon

Voices of VR Podcast – Designing for Virtual Reality

asses.masses is a unique, 7-hour, live performance that uses video game logic to expand the narrative possibilities and social dramaturgy of experimental theater. With a single video game controller at the front of a movie theater with lights up so everyone can see each other, the audience must negotiate amongst themselves who will step up to play the next section of a narrative game that spans a wide range of different genres from 8-bit pixel art RPG representing the hyperreal to high-res, 3D open world walking simulators representing a fantasy idealized realm. The audience also has to negotiate how to make hundreds of collective decisions that come up in the game from dialogue tree options to which direction to to go to deciding which set of metaphoric political platform issues that should be prioritized for the ensemble cast of socialist Marxist donkeys. They lean upon the binge-watching culture to split the 7 to 8-hour run time into 10 total episodes split into 2-episode chunks that are broken up by 4 different intermissions where snacks and dinner are provided. Here's a description of the story that's told in this long-form format: The unemployed donkeys have one demand: the humans must surrender their machines and give all donkeys their jobs back. But revolution is never easy! asses.masses is a custom-made video game about labour, technophobia, and sharing the load of revolution, designed to be played from beginning to end in a live theatre. This is gaming as performance, an immersive, cheeky, and highly original work. Brave spectators take turns at the controller to lead the herd through a post-Industrial society, where asses are valued more for their hides than their potential. Confronting automation-driven job loss, nostalgia as a barrier to progress, and the role of technology in adaptation, we are encouraged to find space between the work that defines us and the play that frees us. asses.masses is Animal Farm meets Pokémon meets Final Fantasy, as exciting in form as it is in content. No previous gaming (or donkey) experience required. asses.masses is one of the more unique immersive experiences that I've had a chance to have, especially when it comes to mashing up social behaviors that stem from video game culture, but set within a live theatrical context. I saw asses.masses at PAM CUT (Portland Art Museum's Center for an Untold Tomorrow) here in Portland, OR on March 29th, and I had a chance to remotely catch up with the co-creators Patrick Blenkarn and Milton Lim to unpack their journey of blending video games into how stories are told in a live theatrical performance. We also explore how they're exploring new modes of social dramaturgy that leverage insights from couch co-op, live Twitch streams, and video game logic where part of the performance is automated through the video game itself, but it's augmented by the emergent social dynamics of the audience that end up reflecting main narrative themes of managing flows of power, community-building, collective decision-making, and in the case of our screening some actual revolt against an theater nerd/gamer audience member turned heel. Overall, the experience allowed the audience to exercise some muscles of social imagination beyond the Capitalist Realism baseline as elaborated by Mark Fisher's work, and there was a turn-taking between the more cathartic mode of Aristotelian drama and breaking the fourth wall of Brecht's distancing effect / alienation effect. The narrative was initially developed to serve a wide range of game-play mechanics in a live theater context, but the spaciousness of the extended run-time allowed them to explore many deeper philosophical, political, and economic topics that most stories do not have the time to get into. The ensemble cast of archetypal characters each have their own arc, and I found that the ending and epilogue really landed and stuck with me. If you have an opportunity to catch an upcoming scre...

Brenna Posey didn't expect a night of binge-watching White Lotus would turn into a lightbulb moment about her mental health. But somewhere between episodes, sleep deprivation, and the familiar pull of “just one more,” she realized she was caught in a pattern that looked a lot like her experience with OCD.Giving in felt good for a moment — but the next day, she was exhausted, frustrated, and asking herself the same question many people with OCD face: Why do I keep doing what I know makes me feel worse? In this episode, Brenna shares how that moment helped her reframe the OCD cycle, and how doing the opposite — resisting compulsions, sitting with discomfort, and letting the anxiety be there — is what finally gave her freedom. If you're struggling with OCD, our NOCD therapists might be able to help. In this episode, we're kicking things off with a little personal drama—stress literally threw my back out, leaving me flat on my back contemplating life (and the plot of my next movie). Then, we dive into the curious case of Gene Hackman's passing, unpacking some mysterious details surrounding the legendary actor's natural yet puzzling death. Could it be the start of a real-life Hollywood thriller? For movie fans, we explore the world of Beowulf adaptations, dissecting everything from the gritty Beowulf & Grendel to the bizarre animated take by Robert Zemeckis. Which one truly captures the epic poem, and which one left us scratching our heads? Plus, a hilarious breakdown of our signature movie rating system: Binge Now, Binge Later, or Binge Never. As always, there's a detour into nostalgia—this time, it's all about 80s Care Bears bubblegum (don't ask, just watch). So, whether you're here for some juicy Hollywood mystery, epic movie battles, or just a good laugh, this episode has it all!

We're introducing another weekly episode into your feed -- it's a less scripted, more casual conversation we're calling Yoga-ish. Just like it sounds, it will be about yoga, but not only about yoga. Because, as we always say, yoga isn't just about poses; it's a lens through which we view life. This week! We share Mike Tyson's unexpected wisdom, the quirky joys of our bedtime routine, what made (sort of) Jason cry last week, and how we're currently attempting to respond to the craziness of our social media feeds post-election.
