When a man convicted of murdering his wife and his lover's two children begins writing ghost stories from his prison cell, you'd think the world might respond with silence. But Chad Daybell , the Idaho gravedigger, self-styled prophet, and now, Death Row inmate, has found a new platform. Through a website managed by his daughter, he's publishing “Letters from Chad,” little episodes designed to sound like spiritual memoirs, part haunting, part homily, part book plug. Drawing on the LDC's data showing Latinos as one of America's fastest-growing economic engines, Ana also released a statement emphasizing that the Court's decision carries consequences far beyond immigration enforcement: "This is not law enforcement; it is racial profiling. That is not how the Fourth Amendment is supposed to work. The Constitution requires specific facts, not a checklist of skin color, language, and job site. It also ignores economic reality. Latinos are not on the margins of this country; we are a major growth driver. Our GDP reached $4 trillion in 2023, making us the fifth-largest economy in the world if measured independently. Latino incomes and purchasing power are growing about twice as fast as the rest of the country, and Latino consumer spending topped $2.5 trillion last year. Targeting people who look or sound Latino undercuts the workforce and the businesses that keep the U.S. economy strong for everyone. Profiling this workforce is economic self-harm. And it ignores the community reality. Most Latinos are fully part of the American fabric. Ninety-four percent of Latinos under 18 are U.S.-born, and nine out of ten Latinos overall are citizens or lawful residents. Treating Spanish speakers or brown people as presumptive suspects means punishing citizens on their way to work and parents on school runs, not just the undocumented. Enforcement of immigration law cannot come at the cost of civil liberties and human dignity. America's economic future depends on treating Latinos as full and equal participants in our society, not targets of suspicion." A new report, co-authored by Lorne Foster and Lesley Jacobs, examines consumer racial profiling of Indigenous people in Canada. The report says it is likely that racial profiling in retail environments is the most frequent form of racism experienced by Indigenous communities. The Heiltsuk Nation released the report as part of its filings for a BC Human Rights Tribunal complaint that will be heard in October. We speak with Lesley Jacobs.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the fastest-growing etiology of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This work identifies novel gene and lipid associations in human MASLD-driven HCC that may be exploited for therapeutic benefit. Methods: Human HCC tumor (n=8) and adjacent non-tumor samples (n=8) were obtained from the Biospecimen Procurement and Translational Pathology Shared Resource Facility at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center. All patients met cardiometabolic MASLD criteria and were negative for viral hepatitis. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining was used for pathological determination of tumor and adjacent nontumor tissue. Lipids were extracted using a methyl-tert-butyl ether extraction method and subjected to lipidomics by the West Coast Metabolomics Center. RNA was isolated and used for bulk sequencing. Data were analyzed using paired nonparametric analyses via a Wilcoxon or Mann-Whitney test, as appropriate. Results: Histological analysis by H&E showed significant lipid vacuole accumulation in HCC tumors relative to nontumor tissue. Lipidomic analysis revealed significant increases in long-chain nonesterified monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs; C16:1, C18:1, C20:1) and MUFA-enriched phospholipids (PC30:1, PC32:1, PE32:1, and PC36:1) in tumors relative to nontumor tissue. No significant differences were observed in nonesterified polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs; C18:2, C20:4, and C22:6), PUFA-enriched phospholipids (C36:4, C38:4, C38:6, C40:6), or in fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs; C38:2, C38:4, C38:6). However, both MUFA- (C14:1, C18:1) and PUFA-enriched acylcarnitines (C18:2, C18:3) were collectively reduced in human tumors. Differential analysis of RNA sequencing revealed fatty acid oxidation genes (CPT1A, CPT2, ACADL, ACADM, ACADS, HADHA) were significantly reduced in tumor versus nontumor tissue. Further, genes involved in de novo lipogenesis were largely dysregulated (e.g. no differences in SREBF1 or FASN; increases in ACLY, ACACA, and SCD1; decreases in ACSL1) in tumor versus nontumor tissue. Conclusions: These results suggest human HCC tumors exhibit a reduced capacity to undergo mitochondrial β-oxidation resulting in accumulation of free and esterified MUFAs with concomitant reductions in MUFA-carnitines. Current studies are underway to determine the mechanisms by which impairment of hepatic MUFA catabolism via FAO promotes the development of HCC in mice.

Convicted murderer William Noguera was once the youngest man on California's death row. In 1983, the then-18-year-old and his 16-year-old girlfriend conspired to murder her mother, Jovita Navarro. While in prison, he started to work toward rehabilitation. He became interested in exposing some of his fellow residents of death row. After a string of losses in lower courts by the Trump administration, in an unsigned order on Monday, the Supreme Court lifted a restriction on ICE from conducting indiscriminate stops and raids in Los Angeles that have been decried as racial profiling. On Today's Show:Lindsay Nash, professor of law at Cardozo Law, co-director of the Kathryn O.
