Send us a textIt was a pleasure to welcome Leonard Ambrose to the JustPod to discuss his representation of the notorious defendant Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong. Ambrose obtained an acquittal of Armstrong after she shot her boyfriend six times as he lay on a couch in 1984. But Armstrong is possibly more well known for her eventual murder conviction in the bizarre Pizza Bomber case in Erie, Pennsylvania—the subject of the Netflix series “Evil Genius.” That case arose from the August 28, 2003 robbery of a bank in Erie Township by Brian Wells, a pizza delivery man. What made the robbery so unusual, and so macabre, was the locked collar around Mr. Wells' neck when he entered the bank. The collar contained a ticking time bomb that, after a standoff with Pennsylvania law enforcement, exploded, resulting in Mr. Wells' death. Armstrong was sentenced to life imprisonment, plus 30 years, and died in prison in 2017 of natural causes—unlike her victims.
This week Professor Adam is bringing out a true crime hall of fame story. The death of Brian Wells/the Pizza Bomber/the Collar Bomber, is one of the most puzzling crimes ever committed. It has everything a true crime story could ever want. A serial killer, a bank robbery, a scavenger hunt, a creepy love story, a conspiracy, and a healthy dose of mental illness. Brian Wells delivered a pizza to a TV tower building on Peach Street in Erie, PA. The next time Brian was seen he was wearing a bulky collar entering the local PNC Bank. He would rob that bank and try to evade police as he followed a scavenger hunt given to him. The hunt was suppose to give him all of the pieces to safely take the explosive collar off of his neck. What he didn't know was the freaks who placed the collar on him never intended on him completing his task. Wells was intercepted by police and ultimately expired under their watch. The hunt for the conspirators would take longer than anyone expected. The cast of creatures who concocted this evil plan would end up turning on each other, but not without a few surprises for the police. On August 28, 2003, Brian Wells, a pizza delivery driver in Erie, Pennsylvania, was coerced into robbing a PNC Bank with a bomb locked around his neck as part of a horifying life or death scavenger hunt. Pizza Bomber - The Untold Story of America's Most Shocking Bank RobberyJul 27, 2023The bizarre, true story of a robbery gone wrong and the explosive murder that shocked the nation—as seen on Netflix's docuseries Evil Genius. For the first time, two of the people who followed the story from the beginning—Jerry Clark, the lead FBI Special Agent who cracked what became known as the Pizza Bomber case, and investigative reporter Ed Palattella—tell the complete story of what happened on August 28, 2003.In the suburbs of Erie, Pennsylvania, a pizza delivery man named Brian Wells was accosted by several men who locked a time bomb around his neck. They then ordered him to rob a bank. After delivering the money, he would receive clues to help him disarm the bomb. It was one of the most ingenious bank robbery schemes in history, known as Collarbomb by the FBI. It did not go according to plan.Wells, picked up by police shortly after the robbery, never found the clues he needed. Investigating the crime after his grisly death, the FBI soon discovered that Wells was not, in fact, an innocent victim. He was merely the first co-conspirator to fall in a bizarre trail of death following the crime...Book : Pizza Bomber: The Untold Story of America's Most Shocking Bank RobberyBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

28 agosto 2003, Pennsylvania. Siamo a Eerie, in Pennsylvania. On August 28th, 2003, the quiet town of Erie, Pennsylvania garnered local and national attention following a bizarre bank heist. With a cane gun in his hands and a collar-bomb attached to his neck, 46-year-old Brian Wells had unsuccessfully attempted to steal $250,000 from a local PNC Bank earlier that afternoon. Police quickly arrested him and cleared the area, but it would soon be too late. The bomb detonated at 3:18 PM that day, turning what should've been a routine pizza delivery fatal for Brian Wells. Retired FBI Special Agent Jerry Clark was the lead investigator on Major Case #203 - The Collar-Bomb. He shares how he was first introduced to the case and describes the many twists and turns behind this infamous investigation. Jerry Clark's career in law enforcement spanned over the course of 27 years at both local and federal levels. Prior to his career with the FBI, he served as an agent at both the NCIS and the DEA. Jerry Clark currently serves as an Associate Professor and Chair of the Criminal Justice Department at Gannon University. In his book co-authored with Ed Palattella entitled, Pizza Bomber: The Untold Story of America's Most Shocking Bank Robbery, Jerry details the true and bizarre story behind one of the country's most shocking heists. Within mere hours of dialing 911, Bill Rothstein found himself in police custody. His claim of enduring weeks of emotional agony was corroborated by the evidence investigators unearthed at his residence: a collection of power tools and supplies of professional grade, akin to the materials used in crafting the notorious collar bomb. In the labyrinth of Bill's personal effects, authorities discovered a handwritten suicide note.
