MM and Katy are bicoastal besties bonding over their love of wine and mysteries. Each week, we'll talk about episodes of true crime and paranormal TV, mysteries in our own lives, and the wine we drink along the way.
Happy new year, lizards! We're back and what a winding road of recording this episode twice, having the audio bork differently two times, and then going with the original recording because it was slightly less bad this has been. All worth it for the story of Candy Jones, a.k.a. Arlene Grant, model possible MK Ultra victim. Buckle up for hypnosis, secret missions, possible Winter Soldiering, and fry bits. Also, a lengthy ode to Alias, a recommendation for Only Murders in the Building, and ~tales of pregnancy~. The truth is out there and it is festive, y'all. It's Katy's turn and she has brought you some UFOs near Stonehenge that appear on Christmas morning, 1964 (and then a bunch of other times) - the story of the Warminster Thing! Is it just military drills from their nearby training area? Or is that what they WANT you to think? We check in with our PAs. MM is not ready to reenter society. How is it December?! Lizards, we recorded this one in a post-Thanksgiving haze, so in addition to the tale of Kaz II, the ghost yacht, get ready for opinions about gravy. Oh, right, we said ghost yacht. Further proof that you don't fuck with the ocean, back in 2007, the crew of the Kaz II disappeared with no explanation, in a way compared to the disappearance of the Mary Celeste's crew back in the late 1800s. A two parter? From MM? It's more likely than you think. MM's story this week is about a cult, the Order of the Solar Temple. In part one, she goes over the outcome of the story, where several events of mass death occur in 1994 and bring the Order into the public consciousness. The investigations into these deaths are MADDENING. But first, there's a ginger devil update. Once again, we establish that we are susceptible to good branding. Katy gets very literal this week and brings us a wine-based mystery by covering the story of Rudy Kurniawan, the first person to be charged with wine fraud in the U.S, from the 2016 documentary, "Sour Grapes." Content warning: you're really going to hate rich douchebags during this episode, but since you probably already DO... let's get into it. It's MM's birthday (observed)! We return to France quite a bit with the documentary's hero, Laurent Ponsot, who is officially offered a hosting gig here with us (call us, Laurent). MM cannot believe no one in the wine scene verifies ANYTHING. We do not recommend taking a drink everytime she sighs in incredulity or says "oh, fuck off." This may cause BODILY HARM. MM unrolls the mile-long scroll of content warnings for the conclusion of her coverage of the Netflix documentary "Evil Genius." Find out what happened after authorities made the connection of the murder of Brian Wells to all of the shenanigans of Marjorie Diehl Armstrong and Bill Rothstein. Who the hell came up with over the hill parties? Katy has traumatic scavenger hunt memories. How do you even get into sword swallowing? Backstory alert: learn how Katy and MM both know someone who is on the lam for (alleged) embezzlement. Learn some fun facts about how to competitively eat strawberries. MM's telling a story that is full of way too many twists and turns to be contained in one episode: the 2003 murder of Brian Wells, which included a collar bomb, a bank heist, and lots of evil masterminding from Marjorie Diehl Armstrong. Also included, a BTS/Ginger Demon update. MM texting Katy about booby traps prompts no context questions or follow-ups. Authorities go on the worst scavenger hunt ever. All important and sex-related contact info should go in a Lisa Frank address book. Werewolves are not Katy's brand. Keep your ears... peeled(?)... for cameos from both PA Moxie and PA Oliver Queen. We're back with Katy reporting in from the surface of the sun (...or Seattle in a historic heat cone) with some strange medical mysteries. If you are a hypochondriac... be warned, these maladies are wild and only provide more evidence that the brain is a terrifying place. Spoiler alert, neither of us are doctors, so please don't take any of this as medically perfect. Katy just researched online, okay? Everything sounds like an episode of House. It's MM's turn for a story this week and we're headed back to Texas for the mystery of Pecos Jane Doe. Salina, Kansas teenager Jolaine Hemmy went missing in 1966 with only some suspicious postcards sent to her family as a trace of her. Hello, listeners... We're taking a break from Beyond Belief for a few weeks (but staying in the 90s) to cover a true crime case that is local to MM's neck of the woods and we have a coincidental connection to: the Chen Family murders in Great Falls, Virginia in August 1995. Ed Chen murdered his mother, father, and brother in their home and went undiscovered until 2002. What exactly do you call a gathering of Chads? Do you still find out new things about old friends that are surprising, like military school or bachelor party destinations? Can we all agree a one year statute of limitations on disposing a body is RIDICULOUS? Tune in next week to hear from our favorite neighborhood papaya hater. Season 2, Episode 13 of Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction goes out with a whimper and its leftover stories, but that doesn't mean we don't have a blast covering them and coming full circle with our nostalgia and love of mysteries. (And full circle with something inexplicably going wonky with Katy's audio.) Pro tip: If you're holding a baby, try to hold it like a human. You're not getting out of this episode without an Animal Crossing Corner. Frakes knows how to hold a cat. Is MM's autobiography going to be titled "Creeps and Caskets" or is that our new podcast? In this episode we break our record for how long it takes us to intro the podcast, but don't let that scare you. Welcome to Season 2, Episode 12 of Beyond Belief, Fact or Fiction where the theme(?) is a ~touch of evil.~ We're headed to Florida (honestly, they could set a whole season of this show and it would all be fact, amirite), a demon-infested suburban home, a murderous used car lot, a convenience store from HELL with 90s toughs, AND a trip back to ye olden timey skewl days. Please address MM by her full name only, Madam Vice President MM. Would you go on a standalone carousel randomly chillin' in the Everglades? (NO.) If no one sees the flash of your demon eyes, does it even count? HOT TAKE: Billy Madison is the best Adam Sandler movie. BY FAR. Also, we get super meta: THIS EPISODE WAS CURSED. This episode is purposefully in a shambles, listeners, since Season 2, Episode 11 of Beyond Belief focuses on DISASTERS. Can rings melt together to save you from a fateful voyage? Can someone sense a volcano eruption on the other side of the world in their dreams? Can a director stop these actors from mouthbreathing? Do angels pick a few people to save on a flight instead of the flight itself? Do you trust a random parrot? Let's take a wine shopping journey with MM, shall we? Gotta start that day with a win. Katy did not start a recent weekend with a win, but instead some trash panda voyeurism, and you better believe she's going to share her trauma. We are obSESSED with the late 90s references and styles on Beyond Belief, listeners, but not the casual late 90s racism. Katy's guessing again for Season 2, Episode 10 this week, where the stories are animal-related and exasperated-sigh-inducing. America is obSESSED with motorcycles, but not Danny's Hog Heaven or random Jay Leno name drops. We keep expanding the Beyond Belief Cinematic Universe. Bonjour, les auditeurs! We're back with another assault on the French language, errr, episode covering Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction. This week it's Season 2, Episode 7, and MM is sorting through the "ambiguity of truth" (okay, show, calm down). Will MM improve her guessing record? One of our tales is full of French accents as performed if they'd only had French described to them loosely from a barely remembered fever dream. HON HON HON!
