In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we continue our countdown to Fantastic Four: First Steps by diving into the 2005 Fantastic Four movie! As part of our ongoing Fantastic Four movie retrospective, we follow up our review of the 1994 unreleased cult classic by tackling this mid-2000s Marvel blockbuster featuring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis. We break down the major scenes and plot points, examine the character dynamics between Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm, and talk about how the film handled Doctor Doom. From the cheesy one-liners to the special effects of the time, we take a fun, lighthearted, and sometimes brutally honest look at what worked—and what didn't—in this early attempt to bring Marvel's First Family to life on the big screen. With our signature humor and in-depth comic book knowledge, this episode is perfect for fans of superhero movies, Marvel lore, and pop culture throwbacks.
“Marcus is now full-on Homer Simpson!” - Eric, on Marcus being lured by candy On this week's episode, we conclude our month of talking about movies from last year with a chat around the latest in the seemingly never-ending buddy cop franchise, Bad Boys: Ride or Die! How hilarious is this Joey Pants Scream 3 video? Wasn't it the smart move to bring some more comedy back into these movies? We're looking at you, part three! And how rad is all this Ambulance-esque drone cinematography? PLUS: A decent amount of time is devoted to, you guessed it, discussing hot dogs! What happens when you get Ridley Scott, the year 2001 and every single white male actor on the planet? Well, that's very specific so I guess you get Black Hawk Down. The guys discuss the confusion about all the similar faces and Ridley's noble attempt to make it easier for the viewers, they debate if there are any political opinions in the film and if they are drowned out by all the machismo and explosions, they discuss CGI usage in this movie versus now and much more.

In 1995, Michael Bay made Bad Boys and introduced us to the characters of Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey, played respectively by Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. Now 29 years later, they're back in the fourth Bad Boys movie, Bad Boys: Ride Or Die. Again it brings you some more intense action than you'd expect in a comedy but also of course the slap you in the face laughs you'd expect. Since it's all these years after the first movie, Marcus and Mike have much more complicated off-duty lives. However, that doesn't stop them from having to deal with some serious baddies. This time the baddies are trying to frame their dearly departed Captain Howard, played by Joe Pantoliano, and Marcus and Mike aren't having it. Plus, Captain Howard is trying to help them find the baddies involved from beyond the grave sort of speak. You get the gun fights, the car chases, the mid-air death-defying action sequences, the hard-edged comedy and some returning characters. Does it all add up to some riveting bad boy action or is the movie just plain bad? Check out this episode to find out that very thing. Bad Boys: Ride Or Die also stars Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Nunez, Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, Jacob Scipio, Melanie Liburd, Tasha Smith, Rhea Seehorn, Tiffany Haddish, DJ Khaled, John Salley, Bianca Bethune, Dennis Greene and Quinn Hemphill. Hey everyone, the fourth Bad Boys film - Bad Boys: Ride or Die - has hit theaters globally. I only got into this franchise a couple of years ago and admittedly, I am not really a super fan of the Bad Boys films like I am for some of my favorite action franchises like Mission: Impossible. That being said, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's chemistry always keeps these films alive and entertaining no matter what. I've also become a pretty big fan of the directing duo Adil & Bilall, who directed the previous Bad Boys film (BY FAR the best of the franchise up to that point), the best episodes of Ms. Marvel and the, unfortunately, canceled Batgirl film. So, does Bad Boys: Ride or Die serve as another solid entry in the franchise or is it staring to show signs of running out of gas? Find out in this review! Bad Boys: Ride or Die: Directed by: Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah Written by: Chris Bremner & Will Beall Based on Characters Created by: George Gallo Produced by: Jerry Bruckheimer, Will Smith, Chad Oman, Doug Belgrad Executive Producers: Barry Waldman, Mike Stenson, James Lassiter, Jon Mone, Chris Bremner, Martin Lawrence Music by: Lorne Balfe Cinematography by: Robrecht Heyvaert Editing by: Asaf Eisenberg, Dan Lebental Casting by: Lindsay Graham, Mary Vernieu Production Design by: Jon Billington Cast: Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Nuñez, Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, Jacob Scipio, Melanie Liburd, Tasha Smith, Rhea Seehorn, with Tiffany Haddish and Joe Pantoliano Synopsis: After their late former Captain is framed, Lowrey and Burnett try to clear his name, only to end up on the run themselves.
For this week's main podcast review, Giovanni Lago and I are reviewing the fourth entry in the "Bad Boys" franchise with "Bad Boys: Ride Or Die," starring Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Núñez, Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, Rhea Seehorn, Jacob Scipio, Melanie Liburd, Tasha Smith, Tiffany Haddish & Joe Pantoliano. With Adil & Bilall returning to direct following the success of "Bad Boys For Life," the film is the second major release for Smith since the Oscars slap and is arriving at a time when the summer movie box office needs a boost. What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss the story, Smith and Lawrence's chemistry, the action, the comedy, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is exactly what you think it would be- large beasties in a slugfest with other large beasties with a humungous death toll to civilians in the city as buildings crumble from collateral damage. Gary Hawes has directed multiple episodes of the most-watched television drama series on the planet (ABC's hit drama, The Good Doctor). He's also the director of some critically acclaimed indie projects, including the comedy Leap 4 Your Life, a feature-length mockumentary about a community dance competition starring some of our local industry's finest, and The Charlie Da Clown Show, a trippy short about the behind the scenes shenanigans of a talk show hosted by a washed up clown named Charlie. Gary has also directed short films featuring big, bold actors like Alan Cumming and Ioan Gruffudd, worked as a 2nd AD on some big, bold films like Sucker Punch, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Interstellar, and worked as a first AD on big, bold, beloved projects like Once Upon A Time and Cedar Cove. In this fascinating and at times funny episode, director Gary Hawes discusses the The Good Doctor, special memories from the making of X2: X-Men United (Sir Ian McKellen makes great pancakes!), directing for TV vs. directing films, directing “undirectable” actors, and the project that changed it all for him: Gretzky Saves Christmas, the school play he wrote, directed, and starred in at the age of 10. Ridley Scott's terrific depiction of the events of the Battle of Mogadishu kicks off Operations week as we watch 2001's BLACK HAWK DOWN. I thought I was being so clever picking this, with the disastrous events of Operation Gothic Serpent in which US troops extracted General Mohamed Farrah Aidid from the Somali capital at a terrible human cost providing the backdrop to a memorable scene of impromptu battlefield femoral artery surgery. If I'd patted myself on the back any harder at the idea of picking a movie that featured a memorable operation within a memorable operation I'd have broken my own spine so naturally when a listener offers up an example of an operation within an operation within an operation for us to discuss in this week's main episode it crushed my fragile ego to oblivion. Bravo listener! Also bravo to Ridley Scott, who delivers up a still spectacular looking by today's standards action masterpiece with an incredible cast of, well, too many to mention really but Tom Sizemore, Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor, Orlando Bloom, William Fichtner, Jason Isaacs, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Jeremy Piven, Ioan Gruffudd, Sam Shepard, Ewen Bremner, Ashton Kutcher and Tom Hardy debuting here as 'Thomas'. You can see the influence this had on video game franchises, with everything from its saturated colour palette to its pro-military but anti-war themes copied comprehensively in first person shooters. Another strong recommend from the Dads. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Fantastic! Four? How could this be bad, it's got fantastic in the title 4 times! One is stretchy, and one is invisible, and then this other guy is all fire-y, and then there is also the rock guy who is all rocky and such. Oscar and Carl watch this 2005 classic (not batman) to figure out who would watch this.
Hey Meanwhile Listeners it's another edition of our watch along commentary tracks, and for this one. We chose the original big screen Fantastic Four film. You know the one where Captain America plays the Human Torch, Dark Angel plays Sue Storm and the Commish/Vic Mackie plays the Thing. Oh and Ioan Gruffudd is Reed Richards. As always we crack some jokes, but this time Ryan showed up with some interesting facts about the movie, you aren't going to want to miss these. So head over to D+ and let's have a fantastic time together

Rhys Thomas, who directed multiple episodes of Marvel's Hawkeye series (including the first two), has clarified when, exactly, the Disney+ show fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Despite fan speculation that Hawkeye takes place in 2025 (two years after the present-day in Avengers: Endgame), Thomas has confirmed the show unfolds in the MCU's version of 2024. "For a period of time, we were going to set it two years out - which would make it 2025 - hence me messing with your minds about the timeline. But it's [one] year out [from Endgame]," tweeted Thomas. Hawkeye set photos leaked well ahead of the series' debut showed Clint Barton, Kate Bishop, and Lucky/Pizza Dog in New York City's Chinatown district outside a store with a sign in its window reading "Happy New Year 2025," as well as text referring to it as a Snake Year on the Chinese Zodiac. (The next Snake Year is, indeed, 2025.) However, it wasn't until Hawkeye's marketing campaign confirmed the show takes place right before Christmas that fans had all the pieces they needed to conclude the show picks up in December 2024 and not the early part of 2025. While the series' main storyline plays out in the post-Blip MCU, Hawkeye's first episode opened with a flashback to a key moment from The Avengers (2012) -- which, in terms of the MCU's timeline, takes place over a decade before the show's present-day. "We wanted to figure out a pivotal moment that made sense for Kate to enter the MCU, especially through her eyes," said producer Trinh Tran when asked why the series' creatives decided to link Kate's backstory with Earth's Mightiest Heroes (Clint included) this way. Between Clint trying to retire as Hawkeye and Kate aspiring to fight crime herself, the first two episodes of Hawkeye suggest the show may well serve as the swan song for Jeremy Renner's run playing the former in the MCU. Renner, who has jokingly referred to himself as being a "grandpa" of the franchise, is understandably keeping his cards close to the chest for the time being and simply claiming he has "no idea" what the future holds for Clint in the MCU beyond the series' final episode. Cobie Smulders To Reprise Maria Hill Role in Marvel Series ‘Secret Invasion' https://deadline.com/2021/12/cobie-smulders-maria-hill-marvel-series-secret-invasion-1234883068/ EXCLUSIVE: Cobie Smulders is set to reunite with Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury on Marvel's Secret Invasion, reprising her her MCU role of Maria Hill. The Disney+ crossover comic event showcases a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years. A rep for Marvel declined comment. Secret Invasion also stars Ben Mendelsohn — reprising his role as Skrull Talos — Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Christopher McDonald and Killian Scott. Smulders has reprised the role in several Marvel pics including Spider-Man: Far From Home, Captain America: Civil War and every Avengers film. She recently received strong reviews for her portrayal of Ann Coulter in American Crime Story: Impeachment. Kathryn Hahn discovered the name of her WandaVision spinoff series, Agatha: House of Harkness, when it was announced to the public. In an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Hahn discussed her excitement for reprising her role as Agatha Harkness in the upcoming series and the secrecy involved in working on a Marvel project. "I mean I didn't even know the title of the show until it was released to the public, they keep it so tight," she explained. Hahn also touched on why the role of Agatha appeals to her and why she wants to continue the character's story arc. "There is something that does feel so badass to be playing like, you know, we think of a witch, and you think of, immediately, you think of a woman who is loud, who is mysterious, who is dangerous because she's complicated and she's misunderstood," she said. "And all that stuff is a real turn-on to me as a performer in terms of digging into this person a little bit more. [I'm] very excited." Hahn played coy when asked about the potential for the series to introduce Mephisto, who was heavily rumored to be pulling the strings in WandaVision. "I have no idea," she said. "That was like a big thing during WandaVision, but I have no– who knows. I mean, I think right now, like anything, like Marvel, I mean who knows?" Agatha appeared in WandaVision as a powerful witch who used dark magic in an attempt to steal Wanda Maximoff's abilities. She initially hid behind the persona of Agnes, the nosy neighbor of Westview who always found a way to inject herself into Wanda and Vision's family life. After she was defeated, the series concluded with Agatha being trapped as her character in Westview. Hahn's performance was praised by critics and fans, with the actor being nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series. "Agatha All Along", the song from WandaVision that revealed Agatha as the antagonist, won an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics and recently received a Grammy nod. Plot details about Agatha: House of Harkness are currently unknown, with the title and the return of Hahn being the only pieces of information about the series. A WandaVision spinoff show centered on Agatha was announced back in October, with the official title reveal coming as a part of Disney+ Day the following month. Disney+ Cuts Two Pre-MCU Marvel Films From Its Lineup https://www.cbr.com/disney-plus-pre-mcu-marvel-fantastic-four-cut/ Two classic Fox Marvel films are no longer available to stream on Disney+, and the reason why isn't totally clear. Disney+ subscribers looking to watch either 2005's Fantastic Four or 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer will have to look elsewhere, as the two films have seemingly been removed from the platform. At this time, it's not totally clear why the two movie left Disney+ on Dec. 1. Josh Trank's maligned Fantastic Four reboot is still available on the platform, alongside the two animated series based on Marvel's First Family. However, rights issues for streaming can be complicated, so it's possible Fantastic Four and Rise of the Silver Surfer will eventually end up back on Disney+. Both removed films are also still available to stream on Peacock. Directed by Tim Story, 2005's Fantastic Four was the first live-action film based on the titular superheroes to receive an official release. The movie starred Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Jessica Alba as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Michael Chiklis as Ben Grimm/Thing and Julian McMahon as Victor Von Doom. Fantastic Four proved a moderate success at the box office, earning $333.5 million against a budget of between $87.5 and $100 million. However, the movie did not fare well with critics, and its score on Rotten Tomatoes currently sits at 27 percent. Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer were both distributed by 20th Century Fox and come from an era when Disney and Marvel Studios did not own the rights to the characters. However, in 2019, Disney bought 21st Century Fox, thus giving Marvel Studios the rights to the Fantastic Four. Soon after, Marvel Studios announced work on a Marvel Cinematic Universe Fantastic Four film, which Spider-Man trilogy director Jon Watts will helm. There is no casting information for that film at this time. Created by comics legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four first appeared in a 1961 self-titled series. Over the years, the team has had a number of different members. The core Fantastic Four, though, has generally consisted of Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and Thing. At the start of their adventures, the four get their powers after being exposed to cosmic rays during a mission into outer space. OUTRO [44:47] We would love to hear back from you! Field and Butler also figure out if telling this film as historical fiction hurt or helped King Arthur's chances at the box office. Fuqua's King Arthur is producer Evan's Dead Silence......'nough said. He also continuously forgets to mention that Ioan Gruffudd is Lancelot in this movie. Is Evan trying to say something about Gruffudd’s performance?? Mmm. No. He just forgot. "I know it's a bad movie, but I love it so much." *Aside: The boys get yet another much anticipated and much appreciated appearance from long-time listener and fan of the show...Jesse Ventura. So, stay tuned for that. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Horatio Hornblower himself, Ioan Gruffudd and Jamie Bamber, the faithful Archie, join us with naval historian Kate Jamieson for a fun, lengthy look back at the series that set their careers fully in motion. We talk fireships, mullets, Robert Lindsay and David Warner, runaway pigs and prostitutes, learn why bicorn hats are rubbish, talk about a possible return of the series and decide who really did push Captain Sawyer; as the chaps diligently work their way through your questions. Be ready to utilise #WhatWouldHoratioDo and #RebootHornblower!
We are back on our quest to review every Fantastic Four movie, this week it's the 2005 blockbuster. With the all star cast of Chris Evans as Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch, Jessica Alba as The Invisible Woman, Michael Chiklis as The Thing, Ioan Gruffudd as Mr Fantastic and Australia's own Julian McMahon as Doctor Doom. NO PANTS! This week we rewatch the 2005 "classic" Fantastic Four. This pre MCU Marvel film stars Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Ioan Gruffudd, and Michael Chiklis. Ashley is confused on why she thought this movie came out when she was in high school and Ryan struggles with pronouncing Ioan Gruffudd. (Okay we both did.) We wonder who thought it was a good idea to make Jessica Alba wear blue contacts the whole movie and question how Johnny made into NASA. As always we discuss our best and worst and decide if this film holds up to our adult standards. Hey are you really reading this? If so, Hi! Thanks for reading. Hey, folks! It's time for a brand-new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema, and for this show, we've drawn swords and are prepared to do battle on any field, be it grassy or icy. That's going to come in handy, because we're talking about a very unique take on one of the most memorable English-language myths of the last handful of centuries: Antoine Fuqua's 2004 action film King Arthur, starring Clive Owen, Keira Knightley, Ioan Gruffudd, Ray Winston, Mads Mikkelsen, and more. Scott and Josh are joined by Bright Wall/Dark Room editor-at-large and friend of the show Fran Hoepfner to talk about this turgid, joyless film, why it failed back in the summer of 2004, the creepiness of the key romance, misogynistic marketing, and more!

After a significant disclaimer this week, we launch — somewhat trepidatiously — into our next Spike Lee joint: BAMBOOZLED (2000). We talk about how this film didn't get the critical love it deserved, the camera shots that make it, and the sad deficiencies of contemporary African-American on-screen representation. Next Week We conclude our Spike Lee month with his most recent film, 2015's CHI-RAQ This Week's Media FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER (2007): Tim Story, Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba BLACK PANTHER (2018): Ryan Coogler, Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. This book is a good introduction to the history of blackface in American popular culture, and this has interesting things to say about race, class, and minstrelsy. Here are a couple of interesting reviews of the film. This is similar to the infamous picture at which Pierre Delacroix looks, and which Sam mentions. This is the former NAACP leader to whom Rob refers. And finally, here's a really enjoyable review of the film with which Rob started (and we finished).

Kate Winslet is one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation: fact. With that in mind, how will The Brothers Wilson screw up / trivialize their analysis of one of the most famous people to come out of Berkshire, England? The film choices certainly stack up: starting with Winslet's Oscar win for the post-World War II drama The Reader, proceeding on to her breakthrough role as Marianne Dashwood in Emma Thompson's 1995 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, and then as the female lead in a little film known as Titanic. The always razor-sharp analysis involves Alan Rickman impressions, a timely reference to Divine Brown, and a failure on both hosts to say the word "admirable". This episode also marks the debut appearances of Ralph Fiennes, Ioan Gruffudd, and Billy "Slam Evil" Zane, whilst the actor Greg Wise is mocked for being a minor celebrity. And if you think this episode is ending on a Celine Dion song, you're only partly correct.

Alister Grierson's Sanctum could have been a downright disaster, if the co-producer James Cameron hadn't come in to save the day with his 3D photography techniques. Indeed, the film's breath-taking imagery is the one and only appeal that could possibly lure moviegoers to bear this ninety-minute exercise in tedium. A group of explorers are trapped by a fierce storm while they're exploring an underground cave system. Water flooding into the cave causes a portion of it to collapse and blocks their exit. The only way out is to venture down into the unexplored part of the cave, and follow a river that supposedly leads to the sea. But unfortunately not all of them are strong enough to survive the suffocating pressure, and the unforeseen dangers that lurk ahead. The Creator of Titanic and Avatar James Cameron's 3D presentation of the underwater cave system is the most spectacular element. At some points, the effect appears so real that engrossed viewers would literally reach out for an oxygen mask. Even so, there are still noticeable imperfections: all of the underwater sequences reportedly take place in a large water tank at a studio. So whenever the water becomes crystal clear, you'll know something is amiss as long as you are not so lost in the overwhelming scenery. Despite the claim that the film is based on a true story, there isn't much originality to the storyline. In fact it is such a stereotype that you could almost tell how many scenes are left by counting the characters alive. For the most part, when there aren't any 3D scenes to appreciate, viewers just sit there and watch the director kill off the characters one by one, as any viewers of survival movie would expect. Bad writing also creates a difficult situation for the actors. Notably, the story for Sanctum is said to come from Andrew Wright, a real life cave-diver who was once trapped in the same situation. But luckily for Andrew, because his team of 15 was sensible enough to cooperate with each other for survival, and survive they all did. So, naturally, a comparison of the real story to Sanctum undercuts the credibility of all mediocre survival movies, like this one, where actors are bound by the script to act like living embodiment of irrationality, if not insanity. For example, Ioan Gruffudd, whose performance is at least presentable elsewhere, plays his part as a ridiculous nuisance to a point beyond all awkwardness. Then what can be done to redeem a movie ruined by a flat and stereotypical story and bad characterization? You bring out the big shots! So here comes James Cameron with his 3D heavy artillery to save the day. So, Sanctum deserves a FIVE, simply for the spectacular visuals.
