Most notably, he was one of the extraordinary writers that worked with George Lucas to create several episodes of Young Indiana Jones. During this casual and compelling conversation, he discusses the importance of brainstorming during the early stages of screenwriting, his incredible collaboration with Terry Jones to create comedic espionage in Barcelona, and how he got inspired to create an iconic moment of incandescent rage during Indy's outrageous adventure to install a telephone. Opening music excerpt was composed by Laurence Rosenthal and is unofficially titled "Barber Shop"

We had the absolute pleasure of talking to Gavin Scott from Chart Beats recently. While many of you may know him as the co-host of "A Journey Through Stock Aitken Waterman" and "A Journey Through Aussie Pop," for us, he's the former editor of Smash Hits Magazine here in Australia.Gavin initially worked for TV Hits in 2000 before transitioning to Smash Hits in 2001. As a massive Steps fan himself, he always made an effort to feature them in the magazines, even facing internal resistance at times. We actively read and consumed his work during this period, so it was incredible to discuss this moment in time and gain an understanding of what it was like working for these ICONIC magazines. In this chat with Gavin, we delve into the Steps Aussie journey during the 'Buzz' and 'Gold' era (which you might have heard snippets of in our previous episode). We explore what he did to ensure Steps received coverage, sharing incredible stories from the times he interviewed Steps and providing insights into the pop music landscape in Australia in the early 2000s.As always, we have a quick news recap from the last few weeks, including the recent re-release of 'Never or Now' and THAT article in The Sun after H & Claire's recent attendance at the Attitude Awards.Follow ‘Glitter & Gold: The Original Steps Podcast':Instagram, TikTok & X: @glitterstepspodEmail: glitterstepspod@gmail.com Logo & Brand Design: BvrlyCreative Hosted on Acast. We are very excited to FINALLY be bringing you the next instalment in our Australian deep dive, talking all things ‘BUZZ' and ‘GOLD' down under. To tell this story we knew we needed to enlist the help of Gavin Scott from @chartbeatsau (host of A Journey Through Stock Aitken Waterman and A Journey Through Aussie Pop) who during this time was working for TV Hits and Smash Hits magazine (where he became editor until 2005). Without his passion and love for the group, we would not have received half the coverage we did in these iconic magazines during this period. While in the UK they were riding high with sell out tours, another #1 single and multi-platinum album, this era was undoubtedly the most frustrating time to be a Steps fan in Australia. We were dealt with a 14 month gap between releases, low charting singles and minimal support from TV & Radio. As always we have another HUGE news round up as we celebrate the recent chart success of 'Euphoria' and upcoming re-release of 'Never or Now'.Keep an eye out for the FULL interview with Gavin coming in a fortnights time, where we chat about what it was like being the editor at Smash Hits magazine, memories of interviewing Steps throughout the years, the state of the Australian pop scene in the 00's and so much more.Purchase your tickets to see Faye in The Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan, Lee in Snow White and H in Elves OverboardFollow ‘Glitter & Gold: The Original Steps Podcast':Instagram, TikTok & X: @glitterstepspodEmail: glitterstepspod@gmail.com Logo & Brand Design: BvrlyCreative Hosted on Acast. Hearts & Daggers
Ep. 29: Marriage (The Bromance Book Club + The Echo Wife)

Hearts & Daggers

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2023 50:14

Summary: Happy Valentine's Day, friends! While neither Holly nor Devin are superfans of this holiday, they wanted to take some time to highlight marriage with two books this week. Oddly enough, Holly's thriller wheelhouse is chockablock full of married couples on the rocks, but Devin's romance genre almost never centers on a couple that have already found their happily ever after. All told, though, they find the relationship dynamics of a marriage as great drivers of plot and character across genres.    Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:09): Devin discussed The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams, a novel that turns most romance novels on its head by centering on a man working to save his marriage via an unusual book club. Gavin Scott is Nashville Legends second baseman who thinks he has it all - a loving wife, twin daughters, and a career he loves. When Thea admits that their intimate relationship has never satisfied her, he's left desperate and on the path to divorce. To save it, he ends up in a circle of men who read romance novels to give them advice on how to navigate their relationships with their wives. Devin's key takeaways were:  This is the first novel focused on men reading romance stories that Devin has been able to find, and the new perspective on the genre was refreshing and invigorating. She'd rather men not have to read romance novels to act as “manuals” for their own love lives, but hey, she'll take it. Gavin's wife Thea carries trauma that adds feasibility to the storyline. Her sister, however, was so anti-Gavin and pro-divorce that at times it was off-putting and unnatural.  Adams had a feminist focus throughout the book and clearly strove to drive messages home about intimacy, vulnerability, and relationships. It was preachy at times but ultimately the execution on the rest of the novel was a success.  The Dagger (17:44): Holly discussed The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey, a sci-fi novel following Evelyn Caldwell, a scientist who has discovered how to clone human adults. Her recent awards and professional success is marred when she discovers that her soon-to-be ex-husband has been cheating on her… with a clone of herself named Martine. As Evelyn works to process these recent life changes and come to terms with everything, she gets a call one day from a panicked Martine; it turns out Nathan is dead and the two women must come together to clean up the mess and hide the crime. Holly's key takeaways were:  With a fairly unusual premise, this novel dives deeply into key themes and commentary of our society, principally gender norms for women and women in marriage. Gailey explores what it means to be a woman through Evelyn and her clone, a woman re-programmed to be more docile and subservient than Evelyn is naturally.  Through the science of cloning, the reader also confronts ideas and challenges around identity - what makes you, you? What role does biology vs. experience play in making us who we are, and how much of a choice do we have?  Be mindful if you are sensitive to gore, and make sure you listen through the very end of our episode for a spoiler-filled tidbit from Holly that blew Devin's mind!  Hot On the Shelf (35:52): Devin: Lunar Love by Lauren Kung Jessen Holly: Elsewhere by Alexis Schaitkin What's Making Our Hearts Race (38:05): Devin: Glass Onion on Netflix Holly: Fleischman is in Trouble on Hulu    Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

For decades, a compelling falsehood held sway in serious discussions about popular music: rock bands, with their “real” instruments and gritty vocals, were authentic artists, while pop stars, whose synthesiser arrangements and choreographed music videos belied their artificial nature, were not. It's an argument former magazine writer Matthew Denby never bought into. And as the success of his recent podcast shows, he's far from alone. Titled ‘A Journey Through Stock Aitken Waterman', Matt's podcast offers an oral history of pop music's biggest hit factory, made up of the trio affectionately known as SAW. For nearly 10 years, SAW dominated the charts, producing hits for Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Bananarama and virtually every other quintessentially '80s outfit in between. Their music was among the first to bring elements of the gay club scene into the popular domain. But while SAW found millions of listeners across the globe, they were largely ignored (if not flat-out derided) by music's cultural gatekeepers. In this episode of StoryCraft, Matthew explains why he and his co-host Gavin Scott wanted to rewrite this particular chapter of music history, and wrestle with the question of who gets to write the first draft of history in the first place.Looking for more on the art, craft and science of storytelling? In the spring of 2021, UnTextbooked producer Gavin Scott read a headline that made his heart sink. The remains of 215 indigenous children were discovered buried in a mass grave near the Kamloops Indian Residential School in Kamloops, British Columbia. Over the next few months, more mass graves were found outside of other Canadian residential schools. Before they died, these children had been part of a program of forced assimilation. For more than a century, thousands of indigenous children in Canada were required to attend residential schools. The purpose of these schools was to teach them English and encourage them to behave more like white settlers. Survivors of the residential school system say the environment was often harsh. Lots of kids ran away, and some didn't survive their time at school.Producer Gavin Scott is Native American, and even though he didn't have a personal connection to the Canadian residential schools, he knew that the United States had also operated boarding schools with similar intentions. But Gavin didn't really learn much about this history when he was in school. He wanted to know how these schools operated and how they affected the lives of students that attended them.In this episode of UnTextbooked, Gavin interviews Dr. Brenda Child. Dr. Child is a scholar of American Indian studies, and she wrote the book Boarding School Seasons: American Indian Families 1900-1940 after reading hundreds of letters written by students, families, and administrators at the Flandreau Indian School and the Haskell Institute. Gavin also interviews his Great Aunt, Babe, about her experiences attending Haskell and the Concho Indian School as a child.Book: Boarding School Seasons: American Indian Families 1900-1940Guest: Dr. Brenda Child, Professor of American Studies and American Indian Studies at the University of MinnesotaProducer: Gavin ScottMusic: Silas Bohen and Coleman HamiltonEditors: Bethany Denton and Jeff Emtman

As a kid, UnTextbooked producer Gavin Scott loved listening to his grandfather tell stories about their people. He used to like to imagine what his home was like back before white settlers came. As much as Gavin enjoyed learning about his culture, he sometimes felt out of place as the only gay person he knew of in his small hometown. So when he had the opportunity to work on this podcast, he decided to research LGBT Native Americans to learn more about people who were like him.He learned about “Two Spirit”, a term that was adopted in 1990 at a gathering of gay and lesbian Native Americans. “Two Spirit” is an umbrella term that encompasses many understandings of queer and gender variant identities for Native Americans. The term alludes to traditional third and fourth gender people; as in, people who were both/neither male and/or female. Many Native American cultures accepted and celebrated these people before white settlers forced assimilation.Gavin’s research eventually brought him to an unlikely source: Sabine Lang, a German anthropologist who has studied Native American cultures for decades. In her book Men as Women, Women as Men, Sabine Lang writes about the traditional roles of “men-women” and “women-men”, as she calls them. She uses those terms in order to avoid using “Two Spirit”, a contemporary term, when discussing historical identities.Guest: Sabine LangBook: Men as Women, Women as Men: Changing Gender in Native American CulturesProducer: Gavin ScottMusic: Silas Bohen and Coleman HamiltonEditors: Bethany Denton and Jeff Emtman

Starring Estella Warren (Planet of the Apes), Beauty and the Beast is not the traditional Disney fairy tale. In this gritty celebration of Valentine’s Day, a young Beauty (Warren) with a gift for healing helps a deformed Prince (Rhett Gilles, Wraiths of Roanoke) regain his throne and defeat the ruthless nobleman who wants to be king -- and then together they try to destroy a power-hungry witch. Beauty and the Beast was directed by David Lister and written by Gavin Scott. Warren's movies include Driven (2001) alongside Sylvester Stallone and Burt Reynolds, Planet of the Apes (2001) directed by Tim Burton with Mark Wahlberg, Kangaroo Jack (2003) with Jerry O’Connell – all three films reaching #1 in their opening weekend at the Box Office. She also appeared in the critically acclaimed The Cooler (2003) with Alec Baldwin and William H Macy. Warren has appeared in That '70s Show as well as in Law & Order and its spin-off Law & Order: Special Victims Unit . She also appeared in Ghost Whisperer, in an episode entitled "On the Wings of a Dove", where she portrayed Alexis ("Lexi") Fogerty. In 2009 Warren has completed filming episodes of Mental for FOX Television Network and All Stars for ABC Network, the feature film Blue Seduction opposite Billy Zane, the feature film Transparency opposite Lou Diamond Phillips and is slated to start filming Devil’s Pride opposite Peter Fonda and Rosanna Arquette in 2010.
